Subject: Boost level Question: Hello wizzy! If I 'stamp' on the throttle in 1st gear I hit 14psi boost and I think my overboost sensor switches, not nice. Just totally cuts out. Yet I change to 2nd then 3rd etc and only manage around 11/12psi. Is this a tired actuator? Or is it another fault? Ta very muchly Answer: check your pipes for blockages and holes.... then get the actuator changed just incase. |

Subject: oil system Question: Hi, silly question maybe but do you know how much oil to put in the engine? Im starting to think I may have wrong dipstick with my engine is there more than one dipstick for them? I have been told that they hold just over 3 litres. My car sometimes throws out quite a lot of oil into the catch tank despite having the engine checked out at europarts then having it re ringed recut valve seats and new stem seals it drives perfect only throws it out on high boost 20+ psi. Answer: it says in haynes manual...i always thought it was 3.5litres.... |

Subject: central lockikng Question: have checked fuses, also have taken door locks out and removed solonids, left wiring connected to them and still no joy, found that if i put power direct to them they work, power seems to be getting to the connector though, do you have any ideas thanks Answer: sounds like the solenoids maybe fecked or need greasing. i cant remember if u can take them apart. grease the actually lock mechanism though as this could be stiff...causing the solenoid to need extra current to work properly.... |

Subject: in car boost Question: hi again wizard.i am wanting to buy a second hand in car boost controller.are they hard to fit is there any diagrams to look at any where.do i need to fit an under bonnet bleed valve aswell as a in car boost controller thanks gaz. Answer: you may not wanna fit an underbonnet bleed valve as well, as it could be too much hassle. it also helps that u have a modicum of self restraint, and dont keep turning the knob, and know when to stop. im pretty sure there are diagrams on this site.... this may help. http://www.rtoc.org/wizard/question.asp?id=4644 |

Subject: whats next Question: hi wiz i have alot 4 my gt turbo now im running 20psi and was wondering whats next to do to get say 25 or even 30psi i know id nead water mist system and fuel injection is that it and where would u need to go for fuel injection bb tuning aint got one at the mo Answer: more boost pressure doesnt neccesarily mean more power, sometimes the opposite in fact.i would stick to about 25psi max if you run std compression.try looking into making the air flow faster through the engine,ie different camshafts and flowed/ported heads. sometimes a good rr setup can find you more power than you would think, but make sure its a gtt specialist,as tuning the gtt carb is a fine art.

Subject: Wings Question: Renault have supplied me new wings with no cut-outs for the side repeaters. Bodyshop fitted them without questioning this. Will my car fail a MOT without them? Answer: ive heard two versions of this problem. one person said, that as you can see the r5 front indicators from the side, then technically you dont need the actual side repeaters.... the other person had to sellotape the lights to the side of the car, to get it pass, then removed them after the test.... |

Subject: airflow in an intercooler Question: hi wiz, have been thinking about changing to a non standard intercooler...maybe cossie does it make a difference which end of the cooler is connected to the turbo and carb top, does the air flow only one way through the cooler or can it be flowed in either direction? Answer: they can be flowed in either direction,if u didnt want to go cosworth, then forge and other companies also offer universal intercoolers that may fit. |

Subject: turning the turbo Question: you now the way the turbo nozzle points towards the passenger wing, would it be possible to modify the pipework(between manifold and turbo) so that the nozzle points towards the radiator. or maybe someone makes a turbo that would fit without mods? thanks andy Answer: maybe you should buy a 90° silicone hose, like most people ![]() ok, ok, why would you wanna do that...a 90° spacer on the manifold is possible, but u will need a new exhaust connection too! also wouldnt that mean the inlet of the turbo is facing the block....how would u get cold air into it? |

Subject: pinking Question: my car is pinking when i hit about 15 psi. i had it rolling roaded a bit ago and the bloke setting it up said he couldn't stop it pinking above 15 psi. since then i have fitted a uprated fuel pump, new fuel pressure regulator (from renault), new fuel filter, new fuel lines, removed head and de-coked pistons and head, measured head and it hasn't been over skimmed, checked all vacum pipes and they don't seem to be leeking, fitted new plugs, rotor arm, dizzy cap, flywheel position sensor and king lead. im running a 130 main jet and a 1.0 air corrector. im also running a T25 turbo. the only thing i can think of that is causing the pinking is that the aei is not retarding the ignition correctly on boost. do u think this could be the problem or is there something else i have forgotten to check. i run the car on super unleaded. any help would be much appretiated cheers tom Answer: if u have checked everything elseu mentioned, then yes it could well be the aei unit that is leaking.. |

When i change gear and take my foot off the throttle the revs dont drop down, they stay where they are until i dab the throttle again then they drop down. I oiled up the throttle cable but it didnt make any difference, then tried adjustin the cable, but now im out of adjustment. Im not sure its the cable because the butterfly on the carb goes back to the stop when i rev it with the foot throttle! could i be avin probs with the carb? cheers for ur help wiz Answer: if your throttle cable is definately free enough, have you tested for air leaks on the inlet manifold or carb base? |

Subject: race fuel Question: where can i obtain race fuel to drag my 5 at pod Answer: there a few places that sell it,and there are 2 main makes, one of them is 76 race fuels, and the other is klotz race fuels.both companies do a 118 octane fuel which i have tried a while ago,but tbo there isnt much advantage to using it,unless u build a high compression engine specifically for use with it. |

Subject: tuning my car Question: how would i get the idle and mixture screw right so it would run using less fuel?? Answer: aha, shane my parsimonious pal, my frugal friend, this unfortunately, will not help you to save fuel....well not much anyway, cos as soon as you start to use the throttle and get above about 1.5k on the revs, then the idle circuit isnt used. (im sure there are people shouting at me now, saying im wrong) this however will get you through the MOT emissions test. the only way to save fuel, is turn the boost down, put the standard exhaust and air filter back on, then try not to let it come on boost. |

Subject: no compression Question: hi wiz,ive just put a new head gasket on my 5,started it up and turns out to be i have no compression on 1 cylinder?the car also runs exackly the same with number 4 plug lead off?i.....cheers mate Answer: could be the valve isnt seating properly, or that the rings are fried on that piston. did u check for scoring down the bore when u took the head off? repeat after me ""no wizard i didn't, im really sorry, and it'll never happen again"" ther is also a faint chance that you fitted the headgasket incorrectly, but i doubt it. also - what do u mean by 'no compression'?- completely nil or about 50psi?? |

Subject: Cup mod Question: HI wizard. I'm new on this site and you seem to be the man in the know. What exactly does this cup mod do and do you connect the pipe from the bottom of the carb to the actuator port? Answer: the cup mod makes the turbo respond quicker,so gives the effect of less lag. remove all pipes going from the actuator-carburettor and carb top, plus the one that goes down to the turbo exhaust elbow.you run a pipe from your carburettors base port to the front port on your actuator, and then block the 2 plastic carb top outlets on that side, and also block the hole where the pipe goes into the exhaust elbow with an m12 bolt. you then have to adjust your boost pressure back up to what you were running by either shortening the actuator rod or using a bleed valve,as it will be slightly less now than before. |

Subject: Grp A carb Question: hi again another question to annoy you with. I'm trying to make my own grp a carb. I have venturi to 27mm swapped air corrector jet with other jet in that triangle thing on the side of the carb. where can i get a 135 mainjet? will this make a difference on a standard T2 turbo? Cheers wiz Answer: i would go for a 140 main jet with a 27mm venturi, otherwise it will probably underfuel. u dot need to buy carb jets,i personally drill them to whatever size is needed.u can get the drill bits from maplin electronics stores. alternatively,u could pay extortionate prices from some of the tuners for them, whereas the drill bits set are only about £10... |

Subject: methanol for water injection Question: would 99.5%methonol mixed 50/50with water be ok for aquamist water injection looking to get 25psi to 30 for the strip Answer: yes it should be fine. as for 25-30psi,more boost doesnt always mean more power, best bet is to get someone who sets up lots of the gtt's for what they think is optimum boost pressure. a good example is mike48's old car(fastest gtt in country)which only ran 24psi max boost to do a quarter mile of 12.18seconds.

Subject: boost pipe Question: i have just bought a ktr 230 hybrid and on the actuator there only seems to be an outlet for 1 boost pipe is this correct as i have 2 pipes coming off my spider valve that went to my old turbo?if so what do i do with spare pipe and which one do i not use Answer: you need to modify the boost pipework,u take 1 pipe from either carb top or base, run that to the side of your spider valve which has the extra pipe from the bottom of it,then stright out the other side of your sider valve to the actuator.the other 2 outlets of the spider valve are not used. to adjust your max/min allowed boost,u adjust the screw on the side of the spider valve u are using, wind it in for more,or out for less, but dont go too high with the boost.
