Subject: in car boost

Question:
hey wiz

i just bought a in car boost kit, and already have a bleed valve, wots best way to set it up? can i still have bleed valve as well and set max boost??
cheers

jay

Answer:
i feel i have answered this question a few times....the search wizard boards is a wonderful tool.

on the exhaust port from the underbonnet valve, connect it to the exhaust port of the incar bleed valve. when u set the max with the underbonnet and everything inbetween with the incar.
you may need to use some restrictors smile

Subject: Gearbox stuck in 3rd!

Question:
Hiya Mr Wiz, long time no see.

As it says in the title really, the box is stuck in third gear and I've tried to hammer the s**t out of the linkage but it's still stuck. I've now drained the fluid and tried to knock the selector through the drain hole, but am not sure that is the correct approach cos it definitely ain't working at the mo.

Any advice would be greattly appreciated, cheers Wav

Answer:
Wav, you should really stick with the RX7's
as discussed earlier on the phone, you will ave to change the box me ol mukka!

Subject: boost cutting out

Question:
Im was running 14psi with no problems for a long time.
I have just had the gearbox rebuilt so was running 10psi to start with, after a few days turned it back up to 14psi and when I get to about 4500 rpm (with full boost reached), it cuts out and jolts. Is this a fueling problem? The car has happily been redlined to 6000rpm in the past with no probs.

Answer:
disconnect the overboost sensor wires. make sure aint got any electrical shorts at the back of the starter motor, on the exhaust pipe, or at the front by the alternator.
then suspect fuelling, but i cant see how if u aint touched it.

Subject: oil pressure

Question:
hello mate, wots the lowest your oil pressure can go without doin damage.drivin and idle.your a good help

Answer:
the engine itself can take quite low pressure (depends on revs...*sigh*), its the turbo that needs alot of oil! im sure the max and min are mentioned in haynes....
i always assumed u needed more than 1bar at idle, and more than 4-5 up the rev range , when the oil is hot.

Subject: still gurgle

Question:
hi wiz ive put all pipes back to standard the jets are in the t piece and there is still a gurgle noise which sounds like it in the air filter (piper x ) any help thanks

Answer:
have you cleaned all the pipes out and does the one way valve still actually only work one way?
is the airfilter blocked? is the idle set too high?

Subject: acceration2

Question:
suggests to me u may be overfuelling perhaps (or even nor enuff fuel - do u have an uprated fuel pump- + what boost do u run?).... what set up is your carb?

The car is running 0.9 bar about 13 psi and has been like this for some years as i know the last two owners, it has also been rejeted but i dont know the size, its only a intermitant fault though but it does happen on a very regular basis and sometimes you can pump the accelerator a few time and all is well.

do you think it could be blocked jets and if so whats the best way to cure this do i have to strip the carb and then have to buy new gasets or will i get away with just spraying carb cleaner down there the boost hoes goes on to the carb

Sory for the essay

Rich

Answer:
strip it and clean it thoroughly, its the only way really. the carb gasket kit aint too expensive, and its worth it for peace of mind.

Subject: oil pressure

Question:
when i first start my car from cold the oil pressure sits around 4 but when it has warmed up it goes down to about 0.i am sure it shudnt b as low as it is.

Another problem i am having is wen you switched a few electrical things on in the car e.g wipers lights and heated rear window the oil light and oil pressure lights and heating lights come on but when u rev the car they go off.thanks for your help gaz

Answer:
best advice is get a proper oil pressure gauge and ditch the reno gauge. its probably fecked.
then get a proper reading.
as for the lekky problem, have you checked to see that the clocks are earthed correctly or that the electrical 'tracks' on the back arent damaged and touching at all? (im not much of an electrician sorry..)

Subject: Rocker cover

Question:
I have noticed on other peoples engine bays that they have a pipe that goes to the rocker cover and I woundered where it comes from. Mine has either come off or it didn't have one.

Will it still be safe to run?

Answer:
it connects to the black oil seperator pot that sits next to the water pump.
if u run it, there will be oil spattered over the carb and manifold region.

Subject: boost

Question:
when i put my foot down the boost gauge goes up it gets to about half way and then throws a massive judder at me can u tell me whats goin on thanks GAZ

Answer:
try disconnecting the overboost sensor, this may be faulty.
you could also have dodgy leads/cap/rotor, or underfuelling. - which maybe due to blocked filter, or blocked carb jets.
start at the cheapest option and see if it helps!

Subject: re gurgle

Question:
its the 2nd filter pipes are new where is the one way valve (im new to renault sorry )

Answer:
the one way valve is on the back of the manifold, there are two next to each other just under the carb. one feeds the vacuum to the brake servo, the other sucks gases from the breather system at idle or off boost conditions.
there is a ball bearing type arrangement (i think anyway) that allows air to pass one way only.
check to see the breather hoses are correctly attached else it will be gurgling!

Subject: bigger turbo

Question:
Hi,

I want to fit a bigger turbo (stage 2)
what else would i have to do to make this a reliable option?

Answer:
depends what boost you wanna run. a stage 2 is likely to be small, and you are liekly to wanna run between 15 and 18psi.
change the main jet to a 130. and strap the intercooler.

Subject: well hot!

Question:
Hello mate,
I was chasing my mate at the wkd in his clio 172 around some country bendy roads, in my r5 running std boost en turb. Of this one corner i was accelerating hard to my surprise catching his up a hill, then i missed my 2nd/3rd gear change causing my alt belt to jump off, causing my temp to shoot up!! I immeadiatley stopped and popped my bonnet to see my belt had jumped off and my turbo and exhaust manifolds were glowing Bright orange.... (i no it took a long time to get here) could this have knackered my head gasket, and damaged my turbo? i got the belt back on and the car running within 10mins and has been fine ever since! How long would it take for signs of damage eg water in oil/ Cheers mate sorry its an essay.

Answer:
you caught the problem in time....well done!
if u had blown it, u would certainly know by now.
the turbo and manifold always glows on boost btw....

Subject: head gasket/water pump

Question:
hi wizard, just brought a phase 1,the other night i got home after about a 20 min drive and their was steam comin from under the bonnet,on inspection i realised that the bottom hose on the water pump had split.i also took off the rocer cover oil cap and to no suprise it was milky as hell.can you shed some light on this?do you think my water pump is knackerd and thats whats cause my head gasket to go?it also sounds like its runnin on 3 cylinders.cheers wiz,

Answer:
maybe the thermostat stuck shut, causing the water pipe to split, which then caused the headgasket to go. i doubt it is the water pump, as when these fail, they leak out of a small hole behind the pulley, which points downwards....(drips, not squirts...)

Subject: carb + smoke

Question:
Hi there wiz,

On Start up the car smokes badly, it's a grey colour sometime black. When the choke is up fully the revs are really low?
Also i have noticed that under the carb there is allot of oil, maybe just residue? i have taken off hte main hose and there was a little bit of oil in there frown please help wiz!!
Thanks

Answer:
sounds like your valve stem seals have broken. which is a head off job to replace..frown (generally, it is, although u can pressurise the cylinder and change it that way....)
alittle oil in the boost hose may not mean anything if u have got the standard breather set up.

Subject: Poor Starting

Question:
Hi Wiz,

I am having problems starting my car. Some times it will start fine and then sometimes i it won't start at all. I think it could be the timing sensor that is causing the problem as i don't here the fuel pump working when i turn the ignition, then as soon as i here the fuel pump the car fires. Can you tell me were i can find the timing sensor so that i can replace it?

Many Thanks

Answer:
its over the top of the gearbox, where it joins the engine. it maybe hidden by a rectangular metal shield. its held in by two 11mm bolts-do not lose these.

Question:
my renault 5 hasnt got gt turbo arches. the inside of the back tires rub against the car. is this normal and would a set of wheel spacers sort it out. cheers

Answer:
you may have to space em out abit...but this may mean the tyres rub on the outer arch!
u may have to get thinner tyres so, that the side wall isnt bulging outwards. or even thinner wheels so they are further away from the inner and outer arches.

Question:
i need a new drivers side rear 1/4 panel and can only find one that dosent fit the gt turbo (according to renault) what is the diffrence between the standard and the turbo please help!!!

Answer:
the standard one, has a higher arch cut into it, and also has holes drilled in for the arch to be bolted onto.
armed with a jigsaw and a drill i reckon it'd take less than 2 minutes to sort out wink

Subject: tdc sensor

Question:
i havent got one of them. this is why my speedo is out at high speed say im doing 80 is shows 60. cheers wiz

Answer:
shane, do u have a penis?
strange question you may ask....but its similar to u telling me that you car dont have a tdc sensor....it will have one, its just you'll have to search hard to find it....
ok, so maybe u won't have to find it, cos its starin at u every time you open the bonnet. look ontop of the gearbox, where it joins the engine. probably covered in a metal shield. held in by two 11mm bolts.
btw, this aint really your problem. what u need to find out is what gearbox u have on it...look above the passenger side drive shaft, kinda under the turbo area, there should be a metal tag. turbo gearboxes are usually JB3032 or JB3014.
u may need a different set of clocks, or even that someone changed your dials to a coloured set, and has buggered up putting the needles back on....

Question:
G'day wiz, Pulled away in 1st booted it into 2nd then splutter, started to sound likes it running on 3 cylinders. It was completly serviced 2 months ago. I've checked plugs, leads, compression, cap, arm and all ok it seems to be sparking too. what do you think?

Cheers
Dude

Answer:
check your compression mate. £17 from halfords for the tester.
either that or your timing sensor is fubar'd, which can give u very odd symptoms... odd sparks and all sorts.

Question:
alreeeeet whizz as they say up here got a good one for ya !

seen my father the other day and he says for fook sake ! ""could not get to sleep last night"" why like father "" been thinking about how to put the engine in the back of the five turbo in the shed ( i have a few lol)

whats the score on a rear engined five i no scoff has done it but with how much hassle

Answer:
my old mukka, your best bet is to ask the scoffster himself. it looked to me as though alittle fabrication was needed, so the subframe could mount on the rear chassis rails. then u have to make the shock towers. and relocate or make a fuel tank. also need to get a clutch cable made up or use a hydraulic one.
dont forget to stop the steering rack turning!!!!
water system need adequate cooling too....

Subject: silly question

Question:
Hi turbo wiz,
I've got a question that i was too embarassed to ask on the boards so this seemed the right place to come.

I took my car off the road last august. For no good reason, but once i'd ripped the manifolds off i got extremely busy with house stuff and it has managed to stay in that condition.... until now (or very soon). I put a old curtain over the block, and what i should have done was gaffa tape over the inlet exhaust ports.... but i was dumb.

When i put everything back together will i have any problems... ie condensation in the engine causing it to blow up.....?

I'll be doing an oil and coolant change prior to starting it, and i was even gonna put a new head gasket on it and de-coke the head....

Whats your advice....HELP ME WIZZY!!!

Answer:
change the oil, and the coolant, refit the manifolds etc etc. then remove sparkplugs, and turn the car over. if any water is in the bores, it should shoot out. then refit plugs and start. run it in for about 1/2mile and then take it for an extended motorway journey, making sure the engine gets hot (also make sure the rad fan works...)
this will get rid of the condensation....

i really wish Mart had seen this one...*lol*

Answer:
did u make sure the idle jet on the side of the carb was perfectly clean? did u then spray wd40 (with straw)down the hole the jet left in the carb body ????

Subject: battery and immobiliser

Question:
Hi Wiz,

The car is only driven at weekends and the battery is always dead so i decided to replace it... all good you may think BUT when i connected it the doors locked and alarm sounded. I unlocked the car and switched the immobilser off and it went to start. Tried again and now i just get 1 click and nothing!!! all is connected properly and terminals are ok so do you reckon it is the immobiliser playing up and have you got any ideas other than contact the manufacturer or get an auto-electrician

Cheers Minty

Answer:
sounds like a sticking starter motor. you need to see if the solenoid wire is gettig power....its the white one that has the spade connector on it. it joins at the death connector.....

Subject: bigger turbo

Question:
we would like to fit a t25 high bread turbo what would i have to do

Answer:
well, to fit a high bread turbo, id stop off at tesco or asda, and look in one of the first isles, or sometimes down the back somewhere.

to fit a hybrid turbo, really depends at which one you are looking at buying, and whether the oil feed pipe off the standard car fits.
then just fit the thing.
u may wanna strap your intercooler and rejet your carb, if u are gonna run bigger boost....
