Subject: Boost Question: Would you happen to know that if a GT Turbo had a Gt Tuning carburettor conversion i.e different air fuel mixture and if it running up 24psi with in can boost control. Is it true that to save fuel on the motorway you could turn the boost down to lets say 15 psi and cruise would it still drink loads of fuel. Or would it still drink fuel whatever the boost was set at i.e the air/fuel would always be sucking in more air fuel even if the turbo was no being kicked in...cheers Answer: if you are cruising on the motorway and the turbo is on boost then yes you will drink fuel. if it is off boost then you will drink more than a standard car purely cos of the jets. |

Subject: perc fan Question: Hi wiz, I want 2 no weather the perc fan really makes much of a difference keeping the carb cool? Coz im thinking of taking it off, for more room. is it straight forward 2 take off, do i ave to block pipes that ive disconnected or join them 2 others?!!! sorry it dont make much sence Answer: take it off and see for yourself. personally i reckon it dont on a modified engine. just unbolt it from the two bolts under the drivers side arch. then block the pipe up that goes to the boost hose. |

Subject: no spark Question: hi wiz, gotta starting problem that has come over night. my car was running fine until the day before yesterday when i was about to go for an evening drive and found i had a flat battery. i charged the battery, turned the ignition but it wasnt even firing. thinking it was just the plugs fouled up i cleaned them. on one occasion it souded like it was tring to start but just couldnt start so it spluttered until i ran the battery down again. iv tested for a spark and it doesnt appear to be sparking. sometimes its just the sound of the starter motor turning and the occasional splutter. iv cleaned the plugs 3 times and charged it several times why wont it start?? could it be a faulty ecu? i no its a long question but im sure you'll have the answer. cheers Answer: check your timing sensor lead. or it could be a duff rev limiter. or a duff coil. |

Subject: speed Question: would it make a noticable difference in acceleration going from 205\40\17 to 195\45\15 wheels. Im thinking that you wouldnt really notice, but any info would be great. cheers. Answer: ive heard 17's are poo for acceleration, and i know going from 13's to 15's make the car feel slow, so i reckon it could make alot of difference. |

Subject: Dump Valve Question: Hi Wizard I just read the question underneath about dump valves, and wanted to ask a question too (might help both of us?) I seen a dump valve that has a sensor on it, so when you take your foot of the gas it doesnt just dump ALL the pressure, it senses how long your foots off the gas so if you need to put it back on quick youve still got a bit of pressure there to help you on your way, but if your foots been off for a split second longer then it dumps the pressure like normal? Any good? p.s i did see this on a race spec subaru so i dont know if this is a renault thing? Answer: ive never heard of one. and it sounds expensive. renault didn't actually put a dump valve on as standard now did they? so maybe you should stick to summat cheap and simple.... ![]() i wouldnt bother. |

Subject: starter Question: hiya wizard, i sometimes have problems with the 5 starter, u can hear the starter whirring but just wont fire up,im guessing the starters on its way out,ive heard laguna and volvo starter motors can be fitted to the 5 turbo,do you know which is the best to use,or am i better off sticking to a 5 motor cheers mate dale Answer: depends how much £££ you have. alot of places require the same type of starter motor for exchange when u buy one. so if u give them a r5 one and ask for a smaller laguna 1.8 8v one, then they may sting u for the full surcharge too! either use the laguna/clio 1.8 8v unit or the volvo 480 turbo pre91. |

Subject: Charge cooler Kits? Question: Are the charge cooler kits as good as BB keep telling me. The principle sounds good but how long till the coolant water heats up and warms the boost? And do iIneed the big cosworth filter and hard pipe with it, will the big filter make much difference to airflow? Answer: the big filter allows more air into the turbo inlet....but u have to find out the bhp rating of the air filter you have already.... even a fairly small airfilter will have quite a high bhp rating. this assumes that an engine requries a certain amount of air flow to produce a certain bhp. the chargecooler, has a seperate rad that cools the water down..... its a good piece of kit, but the alternative is water injection... as for the hardpipe, this is good, but i know you can get it on ebay...probably cheaper, and 'probably' find its from an rtoc club member

Subject: spark: 2 Question: hi iv checked the timing sensor lead there doesnt appear to be any damage. iv just checked for a spark again on a cleaner part of metal and there was a big spark. what is the firing order, or rather is there a possibility that i could have put the leads on the wrong plugs when i was cleaning them? i no they fire 1,3,4,2 which one goes where? cheers Answer: this is the usual set up. number the plugs from the waterpump to the gearbox. 1-4. then attach the leads to them. from plug 1, connnect it to the cap connection closest to the rocker cover. from plug 2, connect it to the cap connection pointing to the drivers side of the car. from plug 3, connect it to the cap connection pointing to the passenger side of the car. from plug 4, connect it to the cap connection pointing to the front of the car. |

Subject: Lowering Question: Hi How can you tell how much a R5 GT TURBO is lowered..... Is there a measurement from the floor to the bumper tell you how much its loweered? Answer: most people just look at and it and can tell. on the phase 2 the wheels should be clear of the top of the arch. with a 35mm drop, the front bumper just clears most kerb stones. you could always check in haynes to see if they mention it..... |

Subject: No Spark Question: Hi Wizard, Left my car outside for about 3 months with no bonnet on it, couldnt get it to start. After numerous attempts at drying out the dizy cap it started again. Went back to it a few days later and it wouldnt start again. This time there is no spark what so ever. I'm going to check if the coil / ecu pack is receiving 12v and am going to check the timing sensor. Any other ideas? Also where can i get a wiring diagram showing the ecu / coil connections so that I know what wires to check where. Also if i do need to replace the timing sensor, are these purchased from renault or are there other suppliers? Cheers Alex Answer: the timing sensor can be bought from gsf etc etc. check in the haynes manual to see which wire supplies the ignition unit with power. there is only one! you can even just put a wire straight from the battery to it, so it runs..... |

Subject: excess pressure in header? Question: Hi wiz my 5 runs 20+psi with no over-heating problems, stays between 1/4 & 1/2 on temp gauge no matter how hard it is driven but I keep getting a pressurized header tank. I have blead the system properly many times with(stat & without) new header & cap I get no bubbles of air in the header with engine running. I have also done a compression test 165 150 160 170 with a hot engine & open throttle. I have wire rung liners, small water leak from the rad I think. Can you point me in the right direction before I take the head off for no reason. cheers MAT. Answer: the header tank should be pressurised!!! you will either have a blue or a brown cap, which are rated to hold in different pressures!!! |

Subject: tyres Question: hi wiz, I have standard 13in rims on my 5 with uniroyal 195/55/13 tyres which everyone says are crap with no traction. Would Yoko A032R 185/60/13 be better even if the size is not original spec. I don't really care about wet weather performance just grip and traction on dry tarmac. Cheers. Answer: yoko 032r would be better, but they will not last long as they are more like race tyres... even though they are road legal. |

Subject: carbs Question: do you kno who i have to see about getting a twin webber carb for me 5 if theres one for the 5?? cheers. also ive had to turn me boost right down because wen u floor it at full boost and take ur foot off the gas it makes a loud bang from the exhaust and clouds of black smoke pisses out. any ideas?? cheers jay Answer: check your manifold, reference the loud bang, i bet you are missing several manifold studs or they are loose. i think tts has done a weber conversion, and i do believe that the VW beetle boys use a weber carb when they turbocharge their engine.... so u may have alot of phoning todo! |

Subject: water temp Question: my water temp is just above the minimum line when driving and will increase to half way whilst in traffic. is it right for it only to be just above minimum whilst driving as the fan heating is only luke warm Thanks Rich Answer: You will find that due to the colder weather outside, the engine running temperature will be reduced. The best thing you can do is get yourself a standard GT Turbo thermostat (83degree) and fit it for the winter. The engine running temperature will increase slightly (around the 1/4 mark on the gauge) and the heater should be a lot better.Make sure the cooling system is bled properly with no airlocks. |

Subject: Clutch- Am i being ripped off?!?! Question: what would be a reasonable price for a new clutch including labour? ive seen the ktec clutched for £80 which is what i have been quoted but then around £350! including labour! is this 4 real!? Thanks Answer: yes, it is for real, you are paying for quality workmanship, and a guarantee that it wont break within a certain mileage... but then again if u are strapped for cash, i know alot of people on the board will do it for less.... but obviously im impartial, so i cannot point u in anyones direction. ask the questions and the answers shall appear

Subject: R5 GTTurbo 2 Clio conversion Question: Hiya, i have recently put my raider engine in my clio. at the mo i am stuck with the wiring loom i have got it started. but it takes ages when doing the trail and error way. is there anyone who a can contact who has done the before and won't mind me bothering them? i am getting the wiring daigram off renualt tomorrow do you think this will help. cheers wiz Answer: u may need to speak to some of the peeople on the board who have done this before, or even use the 'search' function to find info! i cant really think why there should be many probs, especiallly since the gtt unit only really needs a live feed to the starter to get it to start, and a live feed to the ecu for that to work...unless u mean u get no petrol..... btw...u have remembered to fit the engine earth strap havent you ![]() |

Subject: Faster?? Question: I've had my Clio GT Turbo for a month now and after taking a few friends out in it, i've had a few unusual comments. Mainly that it isn't as quick as it should be. I'm Running 10psi with the following engine mods - Renault 5 gt turbo 1.4 engine conversion, dump valve, piper cross airfilter,Torsion Tuning uprated clutch, headgasket and bolts,K-Tec hybrid turbo with braided oil feed,K-tec grp A carb jets and strapped intercooler. I've also been told that the airfilter noise is excessive??!! I've noticed that I can only do 150 miles to a full tank of fuel, could the Airfilter etc be part of this problem?? Answer: sounds like you have a leak inbetween the turbo and the carb...check ALL THE PIPEWORK!!!! this would explain crap performance, and excessive noise! |

Subject: The Question: Oh Wiz of great knowledge, perhaps you could tell me something, why do women love b@5tards? I'm too much of a nice guy but have changed my name to mr. b@5tard so the transformation is underway. What else do i need to do to become a b@5tard that all the women adore? Cheers. Mr. B@5tard aka Briz Answer: dude, last time i saw u, had a real nice piece of ass on yer arm... now unless tings have changed, here is what you do..... shave your hair off (head hair, not ass hair...), get some stubble and look like a bastard....and then the ladies are pleasantly surprised when u aint. failing that, dont be such a walk over....or maybe u are just going for the wrong type of women. |

Subject: wiring help Question: right my poor minter is feeling sorry for herself, basically shes bin in storage for the winter and she will come out in summer again, ithe temp was just before fan kik in when i left her ruuning for abit then i notice the fan wasn't as loud as it usually is, ive notice that the perc fan is kicking in at exactly the same time as if the wires have been bridged but it all original wiring, also when the fan carrys on running with the engine off the dials start to jump abit!!! the only thing i can put to this is ive noticed a green wire hanging at the front of the alt, if you move it around in no specific direction everythink speeds up to normal, maybe it justy dampness messin thinks up and it will be fine again in summer. all the wiring is totally original renault so i cant understand even the death connector looks new! sorry for the long one but merry christmas anyway Answer: sound like you need to clean some terminals, and pay special attention to the earths!!!! moving the wire around suggests that some wiring near it is corroded or broken internally. you had better get the continuity tester on it, and have a really good look! |
