Subject: Phase1 & Phase 2 Question: Hi, just tried posting this message on the boards but with no luck. i have just bought a set of spax psx adjustables but they are off a phase 2, can i just change the phase 1 top metal mounts on it to my phase 2's? Answer: yes, you can put ph2 top mounts on a ph 2 strut, as this corrects the weird angled wheel problem. even if it is on a ph1 car... |

Subject: gordini head Question: gordini head conversion on gtt is it worth it and wot do i need Answer: it is worth it, but u really have to think carefully about time and costs involved. off the top of my gordini head you need the cam and an electric waterpump. new inlet and exhaust manifolds. + new exhaust, and a computer/ engine management system to run it.in other words how much money have you got? |

Subject: oil pressure Question: Hi, I use 10w50 Aral fully synthetic Oil.. The oil Pressure when the engine is cold about 6.2 bar , when i'm driving its 6 bar, on idle its about 2.5-3 bar.. is the oil pump is ok !! i'm asked because the turbo is smoked on idle and its new unit of garrett.. i dont have any Oil inlet restrictor .. if u can tell me what should i use Oil inlet restrictor 1.5mm hole size is ok !! Answer: you should use an oil inlet restrictor.....not if it goes into the top of the turbo unit! do you use the one way valve that is at the bottom of the oil inlet pipe? - this can cause probs if u haven not got it! - oil can drain back from the turbo! |

Subject: what??? Question: what do you think i should do then wiz ive been thinking about giving it ian a EP he aint got a rollin road no more tho which is a shame or should i take it for a a few hour rollin road tune???? its doing my head in now i want it at least 200bhp and im sure its capable but why it aint producing????????? Answer: you have a few problems first. 1) what exhaust do you have? - it could be restrictive. 2) what turbo is it...mad230?- what is that? t25/t2? if it is that then you will be getting 200bhp with a struggle. best indicator is, what revs do you get full boost at? 3) what cam have you got? get back to me on this one. im sure ian can wait for your hard earned cash...for the moment

Subject: how to get a good launch in a 5GTT? Question: Hi wiz this might be a strange question.....but nevertheless i need to ask. HOW do u get a good launch with a 5gtt - my car is set at 15psi standard and even in the dry my wheels just spin when the turbo kicks in properly at 3000-3500rpm. Would u advise to sit with the revs high and just dump the clutch or sit with revs at idle and go from there? If i do the latter the revs increase but then dip again before the turbo kicks in...........and by that time the opponent lol has already gone!?!? cheers J Answer: its a tricky one mate, all depends on what turbo and power you have, as well as when your cam is operating within limits.... for your case, i would probably rev it to 4k-4.5k, and then bring the clutch up slowly. as the revs drop, the engine is starting to get load, so the boost comes on. as the revs drop press the accelerator in further, so the boost rises and revs stay stationary, or start to rise slowly. the clutch should be slipping slightly. as the power comes on, you should get grip, as the power isnt there instantaneously. do u see what i mean? |

Subject: group A carb part2 Question: Wizard: The overboost switch is disconnected. I use samco hoses without the connection for many years. The problems started after my local Renault engineer fitted a high flow turbo elbow(with a stainless steel gasket). The carb is 4 years old.(has not been overhauled, only cleaning fluids through petrol) When I change gears verry fast there is no problem, on low revs and higher gear when I put the pedal down there is a bang. I checked my sparkplugs and they are black at the top. I hope you have a bit more information. cheers, simon Answer: sounds suspiciously like the timing sensor has been disturbed, whilst the reno techician was messing around with the turbo elbow. id personally replace it , cos they always get cooked and can cause very odd car behaviour! |

Subject: gettin back Question: my exhaust is straight through to the back box but its fairly old now dont think its restricted. mad230 turbo is from mad4itturbo's and i think it may be a t25/t2 but he said its capable of 25psi and 220bhp. the cam is standard! i am thinking of fitting a new 1 v soon are they hard once the engines out????? i think i fully boost around 3500rpm (20psi) on the read out my peak bhp was @ 5133rpm 149.2bhp? peak torque was 156.5@4903rpm.. how the car is now its still rapid kills most cars like my mates 180bhp escort turbo, carrera4,subaru estate,is this right???? ps i have a lot of cash i need 200bhp!! Answer: the rolling road read out maybe under reading! you do need a decent cam, realistically. summat like a piper 285. get a new exhaust, a side exit. and an enlarged downpipe. this should be ok for 200bhp. |

Subject: perc fan Question: wizz, ive got a stndard gtt but im thinking of removing the perc fan. is it wise? would it cause any problems? and what is the function of the perc fan any way? cheers Answer: the perc fan blows cool air over the petrol line and at the base of the carb. it also blows out oily air from the boost pipes. if u have a grp 'a' carb you tend not to need the perc fan. infact you can get away with it on a standard car, but it may just take a little longer to start! |

Subject: idler valve Question: my 5 is running ok but will not idle i have checked the mixture etc but still cuts strait outon idle. when i start it it will run for about two seconds then die would this be caused by a faulty idle valve. the problem is similar to when i lost my mixture screw but i haven't lost it Answer: there is a big brass screw halfway up the carb body on the drivers side. this is the idle jet. unscrew it, clean it out with wd40, make sure no metal bits are stuck in there. then with the straw attachment, squirt wd40 inside the hole for about 20secs. the replace jet/screw and start the car...if this dont wok, then u gotta think about cleaning the carb out and replacing diaphrams and stuff with the carb rebuild kit. |

Subject: 18 Question: how much work would i need 2 do to put 18's on do u think it would look alrite its droped 80mm cheers wiz Answer: would it even fit on a 5 dropped 80mm!!!! i think you'd better speak to some of the bodyshop experts that do r5's like dawsons etc etc. im almost certain that you would need serious mods to the arches/bumper/ strut 'cups', to fit it. |

Subject: Karb cooling Question: Hi wiz. A little stubid question.. Is it ok to remove the cooling hoses that goes in the karb. I'am only using the car in summer months. I have just ordered a new gt25R from atpturbo. Its watercooled like allmost any other turboes, but as mine is an phase 1 i dont have the cooling system too get it cooled with water. I know its pretty easy to do, but I dont like the water system to run hot'er than it's allready do. Is it harmful to drive with out it??? Answer: the water cooled turbos are designed to run with water cooling them down, so you will definately have to modify your cooling system to take that into account. later phase 1's had water cooled turbo, and it shouldn't run any hotter, it just means that the water will get hotter quicker. if it really bothers you that much fit a rad that cools the water after its left turbo. you can remove the carb water hoses, but they are there to help vapourise the fuel. so odd running can happen if u do remove them! |

Subject: missfire Question: Hi wiz would badly adjusted tappets cause the engine to hold back then clear the guy who sold me the car had just set them but it seems wrong , i've changed most things eg plugs leads ecu and even swaped the carb of my other 5 but still no joy. Answer: yeah, id set the tappets to what it says in the haynes manual. if they aint set correctly then it would cause very odd problems, rough running included! |

Subject: oil gauge Question: how can i test my oil pressure the red light on the gauge works but i got no pressure readings.any idea Answer: buy an after market gauge. u get two types, capillary and electric. the capillary has a thin metal tube that carries oil from where ever u 't' into, off to the gauge. the other type has a sender, and a wire which connects to the back of the gauage, very similar to the reno original. try swapping the wires round first, cos if you put them on the wrong way round, some of the lights on the dash, brighten at the car is revved. how odd! |

Subject: Brake BIAS Question: Hi just a quickie on pads... I have had greensftuff brake pads on the front for 3 years and they hardly appear worn even though i do around 6,000 miles a year that's 18,000 and the pads are like brand new????? However the rear have worn to low...in my previous Q yrs ago...lol ...i asked about the bias setting do you have an article or info on setting this as the rears are wearing more??? evn though the car is lowered slightly... Surely all of the braking cannot be set all to the back.....i aint joking when i say the fronts are like new??? pls help as always.... Answer: you have to start fiddling with the length of rod attached to the brake bias valve. work out whether you shorten or lengthen it, then take the car for a drive. if the back locks up before the front then you need to re-adjust! maybe the correct length is mentioned in haynes manual or on the dialogys programme that renault use.... btw....you do remember that the rears are actually alot thinner when they are new......how do u know they have worn...? |

Subject: Over boost? Question: hi, just fitted my K-tec 350 roller bearing turbo and am only taking it up to 18 psi , but what is the most i can get out of it before buying water injection? Answer: That depends on what your fuelling and charge temp's are like. Don't use water injection as a substitute for poor fuelling - That's not what it's for. |

Subject: timing chain and tensioner Question: i now have a EP race cam to throw in and my engines out not long 4 200bhp. i was wondering i bought a tensioner and chain from gsf and the tensioner isnt a self adjusting one like the one already on so just wondering how much i let it out with a alan key or do i just put it on as it is...??? Answer: the tensioner should be a self adjucting one!- especially if brought from gsf..... anyways...put it in and follow the instructions on the packet. or even better ask Ian at EP for advice, he much older and alot wiser than , and has probably seen quite a few non adjustable ones. infact im sure i remember reading about those ones in haynes.... personally id put it in and adjust so the chain dont have any slack in at all. |

Subject: dump valve Question: i have just bought an r5 its gr8.is there a nack that u need to have to make the dump valve dump coz sometimes it dumps and somtimes it doesnt thanks. Answer: check that u aint got a leak in any of the pipe work. also u may have too stronger spring in there, which means it dont dump until you are giving full boost. there could be another reason why it aint dumping.... are you taking your foot off the throttle when u change gear?- i.e you are full throttle gearchanging are you?

Subject: Anti Perc Fan wont stop! Question: Hi Wizard Just a quicky (hopefully) My anti perc fan is always on i have to disconnect it underneath to turn it off? *must be a first that something is working to much! *Could you shed any light on whats gone Kaput! (im not to hot on electrics so if theres any sensors or the like to replace could you tell me where they are connected to or near) Thanx alot wiz ![]() Jay Answer: its gonna be one of two sensors that have broken. one is under the carb on the passenger side (actually screwed into the manifold), the other is over the turbo. disconnect the wiring to one, then the other, to see which one is faulty. then just leave the good one connected and the faulty one disconnected, until you can afford a new one! |

Would these shocks be able to handle well or is this to low?
