Subject: Fuel pump Question: Hi wizard. I have fitted a new fuel pump (2.5 bar). the fuel pressure gauge show me 11 psi on Idle.. what would be the reason fuel pressure regulator !! Answer: you need to learn how the fuel pressure regulator works in relation to the carburretor. the high pressure pump is needed to overcome larger boost demands. the regulator needs to supply at least 5psi over boost at any given moment. so when you are running 25psi, the fuel reg allows 30psi of fuel pressure to the carb float chamber , as 25psi of boost is pushing back on the fuel! basically, your car is ok. |

Subject: funny noise when going over bumps Question: hi, in my r5 there is a knocking noise coming from the drivers side rear, this noise only occurs when going over bumps in the road, do you know what could be causing this? cheers Answer: you should stop smuggling eastern european refugees into the country!!! i'd start knocking if it got uncomfortble in the back too! *lol* sounds suspiciously like a few things.... a) the reserve tank strap has come adrift and is making the small tank slap about. b) your rear shock has broken and is clunking. c) the fuel filter/ fuel pump assembly is loose. d) the main tank is loose on that side only. e) the rear axle bush has gone and need replacing (god help you!) check all these and get back to me.

Subject: spinnin Question: hi wiz u genius, all of your diagnosis have worked wonders so far so im feelin lucky with this 1. i brought a clio 16v starter from gsf bout 3 wks ago, fitted it ok as mr haynes told me too, keeping the sleeve that goes back in the top left nut, and hey presto it ran and ran well for bout 3 weeks, well now its given up on me and sounds like its just spinnin and not engaging with the flywheel, it had seemed to be louder than my old o/e starter but thought this was norm.please help as boards seemed not much help im afraid.the flywheel is standard and to change this does it mean the engine out? all the best jules Answer: sounds like the sleeve is in the wrong hole. imaging the starter has three bolt holes at the top (and one at the bottom), where the middle one is slightly lower than the rest.... the sleeve should go in that one. if the starter sounds like its just spinning, then you may have a solenoid problem. the solenoid, flicks the spinning starter gear out....which automatically engages with the flywheel, and starts the car. if the solenoid, for what ever reason dont 'flick' then the starter motor gear just whirrrs, without touching anything. so....what u may have to check is to see that the contacts to the solenoid arent touching anything, like the exhaust or havent burnt out on anything and isnt diverting power from the solenoid. worst case scenario is that the starter is fubar'd! in which case, you'd better go back to gsf ipswich, and say some fat greek bloke with manbreasts and bad hair in birmingham sent you.- should raise a laff, and maybe they'll take pity on ya! *lol* |

Subject: gordine/alpine head on gtt Question: Can you plaese tell me what I have to do for fitting an gordini head on gtt blok, whitch camschaft, waterpump ... Answer: i think this has been covered by the boards recently. you need the gordini cam, and an electric waterpump. speak to glen@dynatech also andrew cooke on the boards. then u gotta consider, making the manifolds, which turbo to use, and then what fuel and ignition system to use!!! its a big job, but is probably worth it for ultimate power! |

Subject: engine hardly starts Question: Hi wiz, My GTT has starting problems: When engine is cold: It starts nearly immediately but if I don't keep the engine idling over 3000 rpm, the engine stops. And when I start it again, everything is fine. When the engine is warm: It hardly starts. The starter is running for over 10 seconds, until the engine decides to start. I'm not an expert, but I think, the fuel pressure at starting is to low. Everything is working fine, also the anti perc fan. This is really an annoying problem. Answer: when did you last change your plugs/leads/cap/rotor? this may cause probs. you may also need to richen up your idle mixture. or even overhaul the carb gaskets.- i.e give the carb a damn good clean! |

Subject: Wastegate Question: Hi there, im having problems with boosting.ive just fitted a replacement turbo to the car,i plumbed it exactly how the old one was fitted.Im getting unlimited boost now?! could you tell what to expect from the actuator in regards to pressure. if i blow down the port closest to the arm it seems to be not pressurise? is that right? and on the port furthest from the arm i get pressure. is there a problem with the actuator? Answer: there could be an actuator problem.....borrow one off a mate, or just buy and uprated one. unlimited boost is very dodgy. to see for definate if its the actuator, pull off all the pipes connected to it, and run one pipe direct from one carb top port, to the port on the actuator that is furthest away from the arm. (i.e closest to the rad!!) then see what boost you get! if its still infinite, then the diaphragm in the wastegate actuator has broken, and you need a new actuator! |

Subject: Carb on the way out Question: I had a road side tuner have a look at my 5. He said that my carb was in very poor condition. Not sure what is wrong with it though. Will a good clean and a carb kit from one of the tuners bring it back to life or should I be thinking of getting a replacement? Cheers. Answer: yes, the carb kit should work wonders. it really depends on what your road side tuner actually thought was wrong with it. generally they dont wear. and the parts that do can be replaced. |

Subject: ??? Question: i had a group A carb done by EP not too long ago and oil seems to be splatered up the carb elbow from the back of the carb after boosting why is this??? and i know 5's drink petrol like f*** but is 40mile on £10 of optimax good???? Answer: are you sure grease from the inner cv joint aint spun up from a cracked cv boot, and hit the back of the carb. if that aint it then you gotta check the 6 screws that hold the top of the carb on. accessible once you've removed the carb top. 40 to £10 is alittle bit worse than im used to..... |

Subject: T3 + Spider valve - want to lower boost Question: Hi Mr Wizard! I've been searching through the various q's and a's but can't find the specific answer I need.. I have bought a nicely setup R5GTT which has a T3 actuator, spider valve and incar adjustable boost. I've fitted a boost gauge and it's reading 13psi when incar closed, 16psi when open. I want to be able to reduce the boost down to around 6-7psi through the incar valve if poss. I can't work out how to do it?! Do I need to adjust the actuator so it lowers the boost then adjust the spider valve so when the incar is open it still won't go past 16psi?? Many thanks! Answer: yes, you are a mechanical genius! - thats exactly how to make the minimum boost setting less!

Subject: Torsion bar adjustment Question: Hi Wiz, Bin a while since my last post, cars goin well havin the bodywork done at the mo!When it comes back im sortin the suspension. My problem is the back is to low for me as its about a 70-80mm drop. Can you tell me how much one turn on the spline alters the ride height so I know how many turns it will take to get it back up to a respectable 50mm drop. cheers from ross Answer: this was answered on the boards the other day. i heard that one turn of the spline was about 30mm. this was the torsion bar nearest the wheel.... |

Subject: Boost Max Setting Question: I have and in car adjustable boost, single port actuator and a bleed valve, I would like to set this up so I can use the bleed valve as a max setting for boost how is this done? I currently use the Cup Mod. Answer: you just use one of the bleed valves to limit the air bled off by the other. you may have to play around with restrictors @ the carb top to do this properly, to limit the flow of air to them. |

Subject: turning the actuator arm without mole grips Question: Hi Wiz what happens if u take the actuator arm off and just turn it without using mole grips, so that the whole arm and nut turns? i know that it just turns....but is that all it does? will it actually come out or even do something to the turbo response? Answer: i wouldnt turn it at all like that,as it wont change the turbos operation or response at all, although it could damage your actuator internally. |

Subject: Too much Boost? Question: After fitting a new hybrid recently, my external boost guage said i was hitting best part of 24psi, which was quite scary considering i was trying to run it in, after lengthening the turbo arm repeatedly it still ran the same boost, which was also reflected in performance. The turbo came with a new actuator, so i don't think it's that, Any ideas as to why i can't shut the boost down? Answer: have u replaced the pipes that go to your actuator?if not, check them all over for splits or damage,as if any are, then that would most probably be your problem. if there are no problems with them, then i wouls suspect a dodgy actuator, even new its not unheard of. |

Subject: group A carb Question: My car has a group A carb( GT Tuning). The turbo boost is 16/17 psi. The problem is when I accellerate in 4th or 5th gear while driving at around 60-65 mph the car backfires(you can hear a bang, everytime you floor the pedal.) Is this because of overfuelling? Do I have to put a different main jet in the carb, knowing i'd like to run with a boost of max. 20 psi? All the ignition parts are new. Sparkplugs NGK B9EGV. I have a lot of modifications as you may see on my home page. Please help. Answer: dude, make sure your overboost switch is disconnected!- this will cause big backfires at anything over 15psi! get back to me on thi one! |
