Subject: Spider Valve + Cup Mod Question: Hullo, I have honestly tried real hard to locate info on how to do the combination of the two but am struggling to find answers! I get the impression that the spider valve must be connected to both ports on the actuator, so would I be right in saying that I should use a T-piece to join the two pipes to one that goes from the spider valve to the carb base?? Lastly, I see that actuator adjustment may be a little tricky but do you have a link or anything to a step by step on making the adjustment? Any pointers and pictures would be heavily appreciated! Many thanks again Answer: The 'spider' valve is basically two bleed valves, one on the front actuator port, and one on the rear. The rear port is there to reduce boost pressure under certain situations (exhaust back pressure being one). With the cup mod, you throw away the compensation circuit - so the rear port of the actuator is open to air. Hence you can't use both valves on the 'spider'. Just treat one half of the valve as a normal bleed valve in the pipe between carb and actuator front port. To adjust the actuator is fairly easy. With the engine cold, remove any heat shield you might have over the turbo, so you can get to the actuator arm. Where the actuator connects to the wastegate lever on the back of the turbo, you'll see a small C-clip. Use a small screwdriver or needle-nosed pliers to remove it. Then carefully lift the actuator arm off the lever. Don't move it sideways any more than you have to, as you could tear the actuator diaphragm. On the arm, you'll see it's got a threaded section, with a lock nut preventing the end bit from moving. Undo the locknut a few turns so it's not touching the end section. Clamp the threaded section near the actuator end with molegrips, so it can't turn. Use a spanner to unscrew the end section a few turns. If it's never been adjusted before, you might find one or two dimples on the end section clamping it to the thread which you might have to drill out. To increase the boost, you need to shorten the arm by screwing the end section nearer to the actuator. To lower it, lengthen the arm. Adjust it 2 whole turns, then refit and take for a test drive. Adjust by small amounts like this until you get the setting you want. Remember to put the C-clip back on the wastegate lever! Wiz. |

Subject: POWER Question: Hi what can i do to my engine which would give me more power? What level is safe to turn the boost up2?At the mow my cars spec is : Gt tuning group A carb KTR alloy carb top Gtt competion ignition leads Hybrid stage three turbo Braided oil feed pipe Modified head (unknown how much) Group n clutch Up rated cam Lightened and balanced flywheel Front mounted GT tuning cyber intercooler plumbed into another pace alloy intercooler under the bonnet 2 bailey piston dump valves Samco water hoses Samco boost hoses and some sfs hoses to the front intercooler Answer: basically your inlet charge temp will be nice and cool, but your turbo maybe a little small. you need to find out what size it is. t25? t28? t3? etc etc. you will also need a larger elbow and turbo cross pipe, as well as an unrestrictive exhaust.- maybe a side exit? you should be able to turn the boost up to 20psi without any worries. |

Subject: re-build Question: hi wizard i am in a bit of trouble just got an r5 gtt and the person who i got it off has put way to much oil in it and there is mayo on the oil cap could this be the cause Answer: no it wont be causing mayo. its ok to fill gtt's with a little over max, as this prevents oil starvation at the oil pump when cornering hard. condensation or a blown head gasket will cause mayo. take the car for a long hard drive, and see if its any better.

Subject: actuator Question: How do i adjust the actuator?is there a link?cheers Answer: remove the circlip, that holds it onto the wastegate lever. then hold the arm with some molegrips to stop it turning. undo the locknut, and then screw the actuator end, so that it makes the whole arm shorter. then do the lock nut up and put back together. |

Subject: blockes breathers Question: Wiz, if i'm driving sedately theres no smell but as soon as i give it some there is a smell of oil/fumes in the car. could the breathers be blocked? if so which pipes do i need to unblock? Answer: it maybe a leaking manifold gasket. lets petrol fumes into the car, or even a split breather hose. check all pipes off the breather pot, next to the waterpump.follow them back to the rocker cover and the manifold/turbo inlet pipe. |

Subject: rusty, rusty :( Question: hi wiz, Ther is a major amount of rust around my windscreen at the bottom, just above the window wipers, its really became bad and i was poking at it because it was getting on my tits, and my finger went right through. Is ther any way to repair it, my frined says just cut the same panel from an other car and weld it in, or do u thnk i would be better off leaving it to the body shop, but that cost money and my student loan is almost dry . My car needs a respray any way, god dam this cost so much money, i thnk im going to turn and punt my a*** on the street to make a quick buck ![]() Answer: if its next to the windscreen then you will have to take that out for a proper repair, and hope it aint gone under the dashboard!. cutting a panel from a scrap car is a likely option, as is filling it with glassfibre, and selling the car..... |

Subject: whats the crack 2 Question: hello wizz you told me to get back to ya about the oi in my fiev going creamy hello mate seen your can in mag on rollers wicked anyway just bought a new five whe hey but there is a slight problem which has me beat the lad i bought it off changed the turbo afterwhich we changed the oil and it was creamy ( i thought it was just condensation) but the oil was still creamy could it be that it needs flushed out theres no smoke, it runs fine, no pressure in water system, stays cool its got me beat ! since then i changed the rad and flushed the oil out using engine flush and cheap oil. there still seems to be a little bit creamy but there is no sign of anything wrong ! my father reckons its a liner because there is no prssure at all in the water system, when the eingines warmed up and i have driven it for about 20mins he says that you should not be able to take the top of the water bottle until it has cooled down he says all cars have a little bit of prssure but my five has none you can take the cap off at anytime and theres absolutely no pressure Answer: this does sound likely. if the seal at the bottom of the liner has broken/perished, then it leaks water into the oil below. which would cause major cream!!! this would also account for lack of water pressure and no steam in the exhaust. unfortunately, as your dad is such a star performer, he can now help you fix it. head off, sump off, liner out, new seal etc etc... |

Subject: liners Question: Hi the Wizard, I fear I have a cracked liner, what is involved in inspecting the liners for cracks and replacement? I have only ever adjusted the in-out valve clearances thats as far I have got with the engine so abit wary about pulling the engine to pieces, please advise oh great one. Answer: well, take the bonnet off, and follow haynes manual, take the head off, but leave the turbo and manifolds on!!! much easier this way. when you get the gasket off, you will see the split liner!- they always go next to the flat (funnily enuff its the thinnest part) itll looks burned and be a different colour to the rest of the metal. if its just the headgasket say ""hurrah"" and replace. if its the liner, then u better get the sump off, and start undoing the big end bearing, so u can lift the piston and liner out the top of the block. |

Subject: Fitting Coilovers Question: Hi, I'm looking at getting a set of GAZ coilovers from rally design. Will I need to retain my original top strut mount, bearing and rubber donut etc... to fit these on my car? If so, do you know a definate place where i can get the driver's side top mount from? Cheers! Dan Answer: Yep, the only thing that doesn't get retained is the spring cup/plate that sits on top of the o.e spring. Everything else is transferred over to the coilovers. Renault no longer supply the driver's side mount, GSF don't stock the correct R5gtt mounts at all, so that leaves either breakers yards, people scrapping their R5's, or getting your one welded back up (if it's cracked/broken). |

Subject: EGT again Question: Hi wizard, The Egt sensor is before the Turbo unit, i have fit it on the Manifold . I think its the fuel pump the fuel pressure gauge shows all the time correct pressure.. but my question is do u think that Egt 860c is safely !! the gasket will not damage !! Thnks. Answer: Just looking back on your other question about EGT, an over-rich mixture can also cause high EGT's as well. This is due to the rich mixture burning so slowly that the peak pressure point in the cylinder is very late, thus the energy in the fuel is only partially extracted during the power stroke. This raises the EGT to very high levels because the mixture is still burning as such when the exhaust valve(s) opens. Try weakening off your on-boost/w.o.t fuelling a bit, and see if that helps drop the EGT. |
