Subject: im going to burn it Question: whizz, if i could get it out the garage id get rid of it. (well, mabay) anyway im stuck. for the last to months i have been plagued with starting problems, i replaced the carb witha group a one bought from europarts and the turbo witha st2. and the car has not started since. ive been over the carb hoses about 50 times and studed every picture on this websight. im certain they are all correct. there is fuel getting to the engine, all the spark plugs are sparking and in the right possitions. so this only leaves the timing right? which also seems o be ok, the sensor wire is in perfect condition, and im not sure whatim looking for at the sensor, just a wee black nipple. any other ideas? and whats the story with the right hand side ofthe carb (facing the windsheild) that long bit coming out and then the small jet like thing pointing down wards is there anything ment to go onto that? sorry for going on but this is driving me loopy stephen Answer: nothing is meant togo on the pipe that goes no where on the carb, as this is a breather/ escape route for excess fuel (escaping thru a broken diaphragm). if the sensor wire is ok then that should be it. have you done a compression check to see if u have compression? low compression would rule out starting. then check the cam timing and rotor arm positions as mentioned in sir haynes manual! then get back to me. |

Subject: Still Smokin Question: Hi had the head gasket go on my 5 last week on 20psi boost lots of smoke (james bond eat your hart out) and temp went up fast. So put a new one on but now i have still got a bit of white smoke from out the back. And some oil smoke on boost. Not done a compression test yet but have a feelin it might be the liners. but what do you think ? or i could try puttin a nicoret patch on her to get her to quit! LOL Answer: compression check would tell if liners have gone, but could be turbo. also make sure you fit oil breather filter on breather return pipe to turbo, as this can cause smoke. water could still be in exhaust and could need a good run to get rid of it. |

Subject: Temp gauge Question: Alrite, could you tell me whats wrong with my temp gauge coz it don't work despite the fan still working. Cheers Wiz! Answer: temp gauge runs off sensor on the water pump. rad fan runs off sensor on rad. so the two have nothing to do with each other. favourite trick is for spade connector to snap. check this. one green wire, and one orange. always the connector! always the connector!!!!!! |

Subject: fan switch? Question: hi wiz, you've solved my probs in the past so i know you'l help me this time ;-) it all started when my temp rocketed when the car was idle. after having a look it was my fan that was'nt working. i did the thermostatic switch test [joining the 2 connectors together with a length of wire] and the fan came on. so i changed the thermostaic switch...no joy. i then realised that the top hose and radiator was cold when the rest of the engine was hot. so i changed the thermostat so the water could flow to the radiator, although it let the water in to the radiator, still no luck with the fan coming in. so i put the old thermostatic switch back on and it worked, that was yesterday. just went out now for a spin and the fan did'nt come in. could it be that the thermostatic switch i bought is the wrong one? i got it from gsf so i would'nt have thought so. i wiggled the connectors to see if it was a bad contact but the wires are in pretty good condition anyway ps. my spluttery engine was down to the carb i rebuilt it and its running sweet :-] Answer: ok, firstly clean the terminals to the relay which controls the rad fan, this is lurking infont of the alternator... if in doubt change the relay too. then look at the pipe that joins the waterpump right next to the water temp sensor. move the breather pot out of the way, and remove it....im putting money on it being split. then for gods sakes make sure you bleed the water system correctly, and check that the bottom hose feed to the rad aint kinked too badly!!! |

Subject: Acctuator Question: What does the acctuator do? Does it do the same function as bleed valve, or something else? Answer: the actuator controls the wastegate, which controls the level of boost the turbo produces. the bleed valve fools the actuator into making the turbo produce more boost. |

Subject: Cutting out driving up a hill. Question: Hi wizard, My car has been acting oddly recently and when driving up hill the engine and revs will die and it will cut out. It takes a while to start back up, could this be fuel pump or fuel pump relay? Something else? Carb has just been overhauled. It drives ok on the flat, but up hill and hill starts it starts to cut out and just dies!! please help! Answer: check your fuel pick up in the tank is ok. or even that you have enuff fuel in there- as the pick up is at the front of the tank. it could also be ignition related as the car is having to work harder up the hill, and the tdc lead maybe touching summat. worth while checking main power leads on bulkhead aint touching the exhaust either. |

Subject: thermostat in top hose Question: if i remove the stat from the water hose that comes off the top of the radiator to the water pump will it affect the performabce of the car apart from obviously taking longer to warm up. only reason i ask is that this hose sucks its self closed when revved. Answer: dont worry about the hose... make sure the water system is bled properly though and that you aint overheating. keep the thermostat in, cos its getting very cold!!! |

Subject: wont idle Question: hi wiz ive had this problem with my idle for a week now it jumps up and down also when i pump the brake it cuts out now i have put new pipework on new mix screw new oneway valves in the back of the inlet manarfold the engine was a full rebuild so ive run out of idears plz help as i dont want to sell it Answer: has the mixture screw got the black rubber seal on it? have the one way valves been oiled?- if they aint they may need to be, to maintain lubricity! you may have to spray some wd40 down the idle jet screw... to get some shite out of it. (remove screw and squirt wd40 inthere, with the straw for 20secs, then repeat, then make sure idle jet is clean, and clear of swarf.) |

Subject: Missfiring Question: HI Wiz, Im back again, got a missfire now on idling and through all revs, fitted a stage 2 hybrid from turbo technics to my car to solve my last problem, it was second hand from a friend but only 2 months old. Since then I fitted an in car boost kit set at 10psi min and 15psi max, while doing that i also put in a 130 main fuel jet for safety. I know that the mixture is a little out but not much, the dizzy cap, rotor arm, plugs and leads are two months old and uprated ones from bbpt. The timing is slightly out of sync but the tdc sensor etc im pretty sure is ok. The timing and mixture is getting set properly soon once ive set my valve clearences which are making a slight tapping noise. The only thing that has seemed a miss is my fuel pump which has been frequently been making a whirring noise that can be heard when the car is running. Could the mods ive put in place pushed it passed its limits and made it give up the ghost or is the problem elsewhere. cheers wiz from ross Answer: the tdc lead could cause a missfire across the rev range, although more likely itll be the plugs/leads/rotor.- you can get duff ones straight from the manufacturer.- check the plug gaps too...and also how air tight the plugs are in the holes...squirt soapy water or a bit of wd40 on them, and look for bubbles. check inside of cap and rotor for bits, that maybe causing arcing? |

Subject: crank shaft Question: where can i get a lightened and balanced crank from i want a new not the knackerd one i got done? Answer: there are no new (unless you really wanna pay a fortune)lightened and balanced cranks. they are all old ones that have been balanced and remachined. if yours is out of tolerence, bent or over machined then they will not be able to do yours. just goto the local engine builder or machine shop, they usually know somewhere.- or try yellow pages. |

Subject: Copper Or Standard Rad? Question: Having spoken to many different people, Tuners, mates wiv 5's and A local Radiator company...... I'm a bit confused as to which Rad to buy. I've been told by some peeps that the copper ones will split, but told by others that they offer the best cooling capabilitys? Some say that you can't beat a good old Valeo rad? I don't mind spending a bit more on the right one, but am a bit confused. Please help? Answer: ok.....the copper cored ones do offer better cooling characteristics, but some for sale at the moment, do break, especially where the top water hose connects to it. the valeo rad is ok, and also nice and shiny- but aint copper cored. my advice is, buy the copper cored one, but be careful if you ever have to remove the top water pump from it.....DO NOT PULL IT STRAIGHT OFF, OR WIGGLE IT AROUND!!!! this will split the brazing and cause a leak.- its common sense really. also the copper cored ones have a handy little secret snidy advantage over the valeo ones....... if the oil cooler thread gets cross threaded, or knackered, then all you do is saw off about 0.5-1cm of the brass thread that is showing, as the thread goes much further internally, so you can then screw the oil pipe back into the rad, without any probs..... |

Subject: oil Question: hi wiz when i boot my car hard and change gear sometimes oil spits on to my wind screen through my cool louves bonnet i think its coming from my baileys dump valve or my dip stick any ideas and what could be the problem cheers fella! Answer: probably the dipstick. make the seal thicker with electrical tape, and jam it in the hole... if the dump vale is leaking oil, then it could be fecked turbo, or intercooler full of oil.- so clean out intercooler with white spirit... also make sure you have an oil breather filter correctly fitted, and not the standard oil vapour back into the turbo inlet pipe affair. this can cause mucky 'dumps'

Subject: oil Question: hi wiz can u tell me which is the oil breather pipe u told me to put a filter on it so my dump valve doeswnt kick s*** out of it can u explain with great detail so i dont cut any wrong pipes cheers Answer: there is a pipe that connects into the 'telephone hose' of the turbo inlet pipe. it runs to the back of the rocker cover area and joins a T piece. block the hole in the telephone hose, and the put a breather filter on the open end, that goes to the t piece. you dont have to cut anything. |
