Subject: Oil and cooling it Question: hello I always used 5w40 fina 1st oil but is this oil good enough? some guy told me to put in the castrol RS 0w40 but I really think it's too thin, what's good oil to use? fina is a bit the same as elf so?the oil has to cope with a well setup engine, so I want it to be kept nice and cool, is the mocal oilcooler with thermostat a good choice? thanks! Answer: mocal oil cooler is a good choice, but i would run thicker than 5w40....i would run 10w40 minimum. |

Subject: radiator fan Question: my radiator fan has just packed in. it been quite noisy for a while now. i have checked the power and there is power getting to the fan switch (i have a manual switch fitted to this too, so its not the fan switch). Is it likely to be the motor that has stopped working, or are there any other possibilities (relays, etc) i can check before having to take the fan out? Answer: there is a relay infront of the alternator on a piece of plastic at the front of the car. (it protects the alt from debris). this has a tendency to break. test the fan with afeed from the +ve of the alternator to the +ve of the rad fan motor....it should start!- if it dont, then suspect that u need a new fan.... |

Subject: steering Question: When I steer to the right, even slightly at about 40 mph plus, theres a grinding noise/vibration. The faster the speed the more noise etc. I have had both track rod ends replaced recently and the driver side ball joint so its unlikely to be either of these things. What do you think? Answer: wheel bearing or cv joint is running dry. |

Subject: R5 GTT Steam engine cont Question: HI Wiz, Ok I ran the compression test, #1-140lbs, #2-140lbs, #3-136lbs, #4-144lbs,the symtoms of the car are, slight puffs of blue smoke on lift off, but when it gets warm every time the cooling fan kicks in i get steam out of the exhaust when the fan cuts out the steam goes, doesnt really run that much warmer, drives ok but a bit lumpy but only a bit, and i can still floor it from 30mph in 4th gear and it will pull up to 70mph without any real problem just not as quickly as it use to, roughly about a 20% loss of power and it doesnt seem happy above 4000rpm which is where the power loss is. Any ideas on how to isolate the problem ie bottom end, cylinder head or turbo problem. cheers from ross Answer: its the turbo. borrow someones or put your spare on.... this should cure the problem. |

Subject: missing Question: i'm having a problem with my car running. At first it ran OK then started missing with puffs of black smoke.i've tried leads ,plugs and carb.could it be my fuel pump becuse it happened after running low on fuel. Answer: look at your dizzy cap and rotor. then suspect the tdc lead. the puffs of black smoke are unburned fuel.... so suspect that the spark is not igniting the mixture properly! |

Subject: baffled? Question: Whats the crack wiz? I got a carisma centre exit back box, i think it's 12 by 6 or similar. I plan to fit it to my scorpion which is 2 odd"" thick. My question is this; do i have to include a baffle as the scorpion uses baffles in the back box and my carisma 1 doesn't? If i use no baffles will it be 'flat' through lack of back pressure, i'll also be running a large downpipe and turbo elbow. If i need a baffle, where can i get a stainless steel 1? Answer: dont bother with the baffle, it'll increase top end 'go'. |

Subject: Flat battery/dodgy speedo Question: Hi Wiz, I've got an 89 Phase 2 5GTT and when the car hasn't been moved for 2 days or more the battery doesn't have enough juice to get him started. Once jump/bump started and taken for a bit of a spin, he's fine and will probably start without assistance the following day. I've fitted a new alternator and its made no difference. In addition to the above, and possibly related?? the speedo is completely inaccurate, ie: when doing 60/70 it says 30, when doing 40/50 it says 20. Could it be a short circuit somewhere draining the battery and also causing the speedo to behave weirdly? or do you think it just needs a new battery and the speedo is a different problem? Help... Answer: sounds like a different problem. firstly chekc the out put of the alternator, then check the voltage at the battery. if there is too much loss then there is a power drain somewhere. |

Subject: boost gauge Question: having fitted the boost gauge running it off the dump valve vaccuum pipe its seems to be reading a lot higher than the dashboard one thats fiited as standard,i have heard that on the dashboard gauge that if it starts to touch the red it is 18psi,on the boost gauge i have fitted it is more like 24-25ps any reason why they conflict with each other, and which one would be most accurate cheers Answer: the old renault gauge is more than likely inaccurate, due to years of usage! the new gauge should be more accurate, assuming you aint buggered up the fitting of the pipe to the back of the unit, which if you over tighten it can bend the back, and make the internals touch the casing, and then give false readings... like i did, several times!!! |

Subject: lowering the rear Question: i recently took my 5 2 get it lowered at a motorsport place. when i went 2 pick it up, they said they couldnt lower the torsion bar cos it would not budge. This is the only place round here i know that does it. Soooo wot i was thinkin was if i took it 2 k-tec or sumwhere like that, do u think they would b albe 2 do it cos they work on them al the time. its a long way from here, an i ave got parts 2 fit on my car, b4 it gets resprayed. Buttt i dont wanna do anythin 2 it unless it can b lowered, looks like a 4x4 on 17s at the mo. cant b impossible can it?or is it get a different 5? should ave kept my old 1 Answer: the secret is to spray the innner and outer ends of the torsion bar with wd40 for several days before hand. this should penetrate the rust enuff to free it up. then take it to your local tuners- cos dont forget most french cars have torsion bar rear suspension, so alot of citroen and peugeot places will be able to help as well. |

Subject: R5 Gtt steam engine cont..... Question: Hi Wiz, You were right it is my turbo, finally blew on me, ive got a secondhand but relativly new turbo off a friend but its a stage 2 hybrid with a single port actuator, how do i pipe that up. If you could tell me in the simplest way ie this pipe goes to the thing on the side of carb etc id really appreciate it. cheers wiz from ross Answer: ok, just use the cup mod method. get the pipe from the actuator, connect to the carb top on the port closest to the front of the car. then block the one next to it, on the carb top, and the one further down the carb body. then block the hole left in the turbo elbow- use either a bolt or some exhaust paste. |

Subject: oil leak near oil filter Question: ive just recently found a leak on my r5 and it looks like it is coming from the oil filter region however the oil filter is on very tight already. do you have an ideas where this oil is coming from ? thanks Answer: could be the seal at the back of the sandwich plate, behind the oil filter, or from the two oil pipes that exit from the sandwich plate and goto the rad. more likely though, when you last filled the car up with oil, some spilt down th e fron tof the rocker and settled nr the oil filter. or the rocker cover could be leaking from the front, which is unusual. |

Subject: intercoolers Question: Hello mate, im looking into getting a front mounted intercooler, i wood like it to go under the front numberplate between the front fogs. Ive seen on ebay universal fmic without pipework, could u tell me wots the largest size i could fit in2 that space? And would i have to change my standard radiator to fit it? + Do u now anyone in the cambridge area who can make up the pipework if i were to get a universal fmic. cheers mate Answer: speak to the tuners, or take the bumper off and measure it yourself. i fitted a cossie 2wd one to mine and there is no gap between it and the bumper/crossmember now. you can asume that forge and pace etc etc, have made full use of the size available...so best bet is copy them. as for tubing look at the sfs or samco hose range...its not that hard. make metal joiners from B&Q breakfast chair legs (60mm steel tube 80cm long) |

Subject: Poor starting Question: Bonjour! After always being a perfect starter, recently my car just will not start. It just turns over n over but then all of a sudden you can hear the fuel pump running and it starts. Or it is a bit of a dodgy start, it kind of splutters and dies a few times before it runs. Do you think it's a brain problem or a fuel pump relay prob? Or something else? Thanks for your time, Matt. Answer: suspect the timing sensor, as when this is faulty, the ignition unit does produce a spark and the fuel put doesnt run. or a leak from the 12mm nut at the fron tof the carb next to the rocker cover....which would drain fuel from the float chamber and cause poor starting. |
