Subject: dizzi drive Question: hi wiz,ive just done a new hg on my 5,its my first one!when removing the dizzi drive i made a mark on the drive and block to slot it back in at,the engine wasnt turned whilst the head was of so i just slotted it back in when i was done,it went back in ok,but is it that simple as im having a problem starting it now, when i read the haynes diz drive section it all seemed a bit technical lol, does my method seem ok to you,as im just tring to rule things out now,and thx for the last one... Answer: get the cut out notch on the flywheel face, at the 0° mark on the gearbox observation cut out...ie. to the left of the timing sensor...the hole, 0° is between the two marks on the left. pistons 1 and 4 (the outer ones) should be at the top of the stroke...ie. next to the head. then push the dizzy drive into position...fat side to the right, push in at 8 and 2 positions on a clock. the thing then spins slightly, and should have a line more or less facing the rad. then put the dizzy in. the rotor arm should face away from the block. |

Subject: Electrical Question: Hi, Soryy to ask u sooooo many q's on me last question. I have managed to test the live wire going onto the starter motor and its live. I am about to test the solenoid wire onto the starter motor is this the correct way of testing? 1) - run a live wire from battery with a 12 volt tester then with the neg wire from tester touch it to the solenoid wire - should this then show voltage only when the key is turned to show current flowing? Also i have directly connected live to the solenoid conection on the starter which shows current 12v. Answer: get the solenoid wire, and connect to a voltmeter positive feed (live). the negative pressed on anything on the body as this is earthed (negative). then crank the starter and it should read positive. but like ive said at least 3 times before. change the starter motor, and stop trying to make excuses for not changing it. |

Question: Hi wiz, my speedos still not working, ive changed both parts of the cables and the clocks that were from a car that i saw them working on, is there anything else that can cause it not to work. It does go round just shows a slower speed. cheers from ross. P.S solved the weird stalling problem thanks for the help with that! Answer: depends what gearbox or wheels you have on. if the thing works then you will have to take the needle off and replace it in the correct position!!!- do you have different coloured dials than standard?- then someomne has fecked up the install!!! im assuming its not jumping all over the place? |

Subject: GReddy Turbo Timer Question: Hi, does the 5 have a speed sensor wire at all? My turbo timer requires I join a wire to the sensor wire so I can get the speedo element working along with the time attack functions. Would the grey cable that comes from the gear box to the dash speedo be of any use? Cheers Phill Answer: are you sure you dont mean the tacho feed wire that reads the pulses from the electronic ignition unit and powers the rev counter? if so, look at haynes, it tells you which one goes off the the tacho in the electronic ignition section. |

Subject: Starter Motor Question: Hi, Managed to get the Starter motor of WOW... Anyways ure prob not bothered about that... I noticed whna taking of the bolts to the gearbox/starter motor...it did not have a dowel in it and i didn't have any previous problems with it apart from hesitating to start - would this cause this??? What problems do you have if there aint no dowel in the top right hand bolt...where can this be bought from if needed?? cheers Sat Answer: the dowel is probably stuck in the gearbox, if it aint in the starter motor. you need this to locate it properly, else it will chew up your flywheel!!! get one from renault. some peoples are in the middle hole, not the right one. |

Subject: weak boost Question: I am running 15 psi, i have got a stage 1 turbo and a forge actuator. When you floor it, it spins up to 15 psi and holds it well but it just hasent got any kick to it, i have owned an escort rst and a fiesta rst running 15 psi and they felt much stronger, my mates R5gtt is standard with the boost turnt up to 15 psi and it feels really good, please help......, i have been told that the valves might not be opening enough is this true, thanks in advance wizard...chippy.... Answer: get the tappets reset first. you may have a leak in the boost circuit somewhere, or you need to tinker with the bleed valve circuit so you get a strong pull instead off a slow steady one....try different bore pipes to the actuator. |

Subject: JUst to let u know Question: My car was not starting due to a faulty starter. This has now been sorted as i have replaced the starter Thanx for Your advise much appreciated. ( got a brand new one for £55 latest one also much smaller and lighter) ![]() Just windering about the heat shield for the turbo...what do u reckon if i get a heat shield for this then won't it keep the heat in around the turbo and reduce the turbo's life??? as at the moment i do not have one in the car. Answer: good good ![]() ok, the heatshield is important cos it it stops the turbo heat escaping to the surrounding areas, especially the airfilter region- cos it will then start to suck in hot air. keeping the heat in the tubo will not be an issue. |

Subject: Boost has mind of its own Question: Hiya wiz My mates car has started to boost with a mind of its own, normaly with the bleed valve shut it runs 9-10psi but now its running 16-17psi when shut, and when u put ya foot down hard in second gear it will go 20ish psi and then when ya change gear fast and put ya foot down it goes like 5-6psi , so if u take ya foot off and let the bosst run down and go again it will run 16-17psi again any ideas what is causing this everything looks ok and we have checked the bleed valve and actuator (t3) and all seems fine :-S Answer: maybe you have kinked pipework....or even exhaust manifold leak, you just need to check all items that control boost.- which unfortunately is a long winded process of elimination. |

Subject: Locking Nuts Question: Hi Wiz Had my 11 for a few months now, and need to get the wheels off to change brake pads. Trouble is they're kept safe from theives by locking nuts, and the retard who I bought the car from lost the key. They are not the type with three holes in, but ones which have teeth around the edge. My mate said his garage he works at will beat them off for £20 a wheel! Surely there's an easier way? Ever heard of a 'Gator Grip'? Would that do or would it just mash it up? Cheers Matt Answer: just get a socket (must be star shaped inside, not just hexagonal) and knock it over the top of the locking nut.- its easy to do, just keep going down the sizes until u cannot fit it on by hand, then smack it on with a lump hammer. then undo... it is really that easy. |

Subject: R5 GTT Steam engine Question: Hi Wiz, I spoke to soon about it runnin well, what would you say if i told you that I had a lot of steam coming out of my exhaust all the time, looking as if i just poured a bottle of redex in my plug holes and started the car, also slight puffs of smoke. The car still runs and revs well but it is runnin slightly warmer than usual and there is roughly a 20% power loss. Is it a turbo water seal, head gasket, bottom end problem etc, gettin it compression tested this weekend and it is now off the road until its repaired. cheers wiz from ross P.S speedo works now though!!! Answer: get the compression tested although it does sound distinctly headgaskety!- but the compression check will tell for sure. |

Subject: Smoking Question: Hi, I'm getting loads of blue smoke at mid revs in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears. The head gasket failed a few days after the problem started so I assumed I was getting oil in the cylinders under high boost. I replaced the head gasket and had the head skimmed but it's still smoking. The car runs ok and performance is still good so I'm assuming it's the turbo that's leaking oil. The turbo is standard and was running 14psi prior to the problem, it's now running 9psi. Can you confirm it's a turbo problem? Cheers John Answer: do the turbo shaft wobble test, to see how much the inlet side of the turbo blades move. pull it in and out first then up/down/left right if it does any in and out, its boogered, if it does too much up and down, it poo-ed! |

Subject: boot lock Question: im going to smooth my boot and i wanted to take the lock out and do that bit as well but howe do i lock and unlock it without the lock? my fuel gauge always shouts to full?? cheers Answer: you may have to fit a solenoid release mechanism, and have a button on the dash. take the fuel gauge sender out og the tank, and give the unit a shake...the float sounds like its stuck. |

Subject: oil Question: hi wiz can u help me with something? in the maintanance bit it says use 15 50w or 10 60w oil ok but in the what oil should be used it tells u to buy mobile 1 0 40w the maintanance page says dont use anything with th 0w in it as it is too thin is that a bit stupid or what can u tell me the correct oil or dont u know either thanks for any info cheers wiz!!!!! ricky r5 Answer: well, like i always say, look at the book renault provided with the car, and stick to that. the owners manual states that you should use 15w40 or even 10w40. dont use shite multigrade cheapy oil. 0w 40 is like p*ss water, and belongs in the toilet, like the cars its designed to be used in....Fords i think

Subject: Accelerator Pump Question: Hi, How do i go about adjusting the accelerator pump lever on my group 'a' carb body? And how would i go about fiddling with the mixture screw to achieve optimum performance with a car running roughly 15-20 psi? Ta! Answer: Mart explained how to adjust the pump lever in the thread you started: www.rtoc.org/boards/thread.asp?ShowType=1&SortColumn=1&SortOrder=2&TimePeriod=2&BoardID=0&TopicID=31631 The mixture screw plays no part in boost fuelling; that's the job of the main jet, air corrector, enrichment circuit, etc. |
