Subject: Occasional puff of smoke.

Question:
Hi Wiz smile

When pulling away from a junction/traffic lights, I occasionally get a puff of smoke from the exhaust (more often when the cooling fan has been on).

I dont get any smoke at any other time while driving. Also, the Turbo WAS replaced a few months ago, for a new unit.

Can you please look into your crystal ball, and tell me what could be the problem? big grin

Many thanks in advance.

Answer:
could be yer valve stem seals/piston rings/breather system/turbo.
u can see the valve stem seals if u take the rocker cover off.
u can see if the rings are going, by doing a compression check.
u can check the breather systems by rinsing them all out, and checkin to see if all the restrictors are in- the doing the oil breather filter mod.
turbo still could be fecked, even after such a small time, especially if there is shite in the engine.

Question:
hii want to fit a boostgauge to my 5 but im not sure how to do it frown can some 1 plz explain ather do it my self than take it to a garage to be done smile thanks

Answer:
if u get a boost gauge with a vacuum readout too, then T into the small pipe that runs off the back of the dump valve, then run it into the car, and onto the boost gauge, which u then locate in a position thats easily viewable. what else do you need to know?

Subject: Smoky Turbo

Question:
My turbo is smoking. I have been told it is the oil seals that need replacing. It sounds simple enough, and some people say I can do it myself, while others say I shouldn't touch it and opt for a reconditioned or new one. Is it really that difficult to change the seals?

Answer:
unless you know exactly wot your doing with taking a turbo apart itle be best to get a recon unit

Subject: Fluttering

Question:
How do i get the car to flutter rather than dump. I have blocked off the dump valve but still having trouble to get it to flutter. Does it work off the actuator or some people have told me it actually works off the air filter. Cheers jon.

Answer:
put an aftermarket airfilter on it, i reckon it should flutter then.

Subject: Hesitation.

Question:
Hello Wiz,
Hope you are doing well?!?
Occasionally when I am driving at full attack there can be a hesistation when I get back on the throttle between gear changes, feels like the turbo is not spooling up, but then it kicks in and all is forgotten! Any suggestions?
Cheers mate,
Oli

Answer:
depends at what rpm you change gear and what turbo you have on, if the turbo comes on boost at 3.5k and when u change gear the revs drop to that level then it will take a fraction of second to get back in the power band.

Subject: blockin oil fumes line

Question:
hey wiz me AGAIN. would blocking that oil fumes line going to the back of the manifold have any ill effects on the car performance or anything bad? many thanks

Answer:
depends where you are going to feed the line that goes to the back of the manifold. you can block it, but you will have to readjust idle speed and mixture, and then feed pipe that u pulled off it into a catchtank or summat.

Subject: Starter Motor

Question:
Hi,
I am about to change the starter motor how much u reckon for this and which type (i.e amp, power shall i go for). As the previous one starts when the car has cooled down, how can i check the one i have in the car is faulty??

Also if i change the starter motor is it an idea to change the rubber timing belt... as i know in some cars if you don't change the cam belt after so many miles it can f**k your car up and the belt can get into the engine and damage pistons..

But am i right in knowing that its a chain belt in the renault....so what's the one on the starter motor called??

Cheers

Answer:
its faulty if it dont start the car....which yours dont, especially if ur havin to wait till the car is cool!
the r5 has no cam belt, and ive never seen the chain break...ever.
there is no belt on the start motor either.
just put a standard renault 5 one on it and leave it at that. im sure theyre about £55 ish

Subject: no clutch pedal

Question:
having fitted the clutch and putting it all back together there is no pressure on the clutch pedal ,it slowly rises but we cant select a gear,it is phase 3 so cant bleed it help please,we have checked to make sure pipe aint nipped up but still nothin.....

Answer:
Basically mate you got air in it.

The std gear has a brown retainer thingy over the actuation rod to the fork which clips on to the side of the slave. This stops the slave poking the piston out too far when you take it off. Unfortunately they break, far too easily and no-one ever realises how important they are. Your slave piston has come out too far when you took it off and let a whole lot of air in the system and you cant bleed it out .
Your choices.....
1)Get a new system from renault (££££££££)
2)get a decent 2nd hand system with the brown retainer intact (not a hope in hell)
3)Convert it to phase 1 bleedable hydraulics (pain in the ass and expensive)
4)Bleed the unbleedable

Sorry mate, but you made one of 'those' mistakes...

P.s...You did put the friction plate in the right way, right?

Subject: Smoke after rebuild

Question:
hey wiz. how's it hanging?

finished my first rebuild but seem to have a slight problem with smoke...

I'm getting a fair amount of smoke on overrun. It's blue/blueish white, disperses fairly quickly, and only makes itself known when the car is fully warmed up (for 1st 15-20mins there is no smoke at all).

It only appears when I'm decelerating, esp in 2nd & 1st. It has never smoked when I've started it. If I leave it idling for a while, still no smoke.

I've replaced the rings and one liner. The engine sounds really good - very quiet, not lumpy at all. I notice that the car is overfuelling at idle though, as the plugs are pretty sooted up already.

There is a slight bit of play in the turbo shaft, but nothing too major.

What say you?

Could this smoke be caused by the rings not being bedded in properly yet (done 250 miles @ 45mph/3000rpm tops with no boost, running 15/40 halfords mineral oil). More likely turbo seals? If you reckon it's the turbo can you recommend a good company who will re-con?

Ta muchly mr wiz.
Jonny Boy.

Answer:
it could be the rings, u really need to buy a compression tester and erm, test the compression!
shouldnt you be using semi synthetic oil at the very least? 15/40 is good though.
it might be the turbo as these do tend to blow after a rebuild, due to shite in the oil.- just take it somewhere decent, not alibaba's quicktime turbo rebuilders!!!

Subject: cutting out

Question:
hi wiz, wonderin if you can help me. i think i gotta fueling prob.
my car started of with slight misfiring and then got so bad it wouldnt start and was barely drivable as the car would judder in low revs and would cut out whenever i pulled up at the lights. i replaced the spark plugs which were standard for some b9eg's and added a drop of redex to each cylinder, and it was fine, started 1st time, was really smooth and quick. recently although its not misfiring it still has trouble starting and unless i leave the choke slightly open it wil stall as i come to a halt. if it helps the engine is standard bar a bailey piston d/v and s/s exhaust and has been running rich since i have had it [black smoke, strong smell of petrol]
i know you have been asked the same quetion hundreds of times and iv read them all! but there is a different answer for each question :-(

thanks muchly

Answer:
ok, first of all check to see that your timing sensor aint burned on the manifold...you can see the sensor over the top of the gearbox. follow the wire and check it!!!
then take out the big brass screw on the drivers side of the carb, take the thing apart and then spray it clean and make sure u can see thru the very small hole at the end of it. the get a can of WD40 with the straw attached! - then push the straw into the hole you have in the side of the carb and give it a 20sec squirt. the do it again. then put the brass screw back in and see if this is better. if not then chack that you still have your idle screw in place!- it may have blown out...never good for idling - get one from reno!
if that still aint it then suspect air leaks to the manifold?- dodgy one way valves?- splits etc or loose manifold nuts. then suspect carb gaskets may be blotto, and replace them.
hope this helps!

Subject: Dump Valves

Question:
Okay was wondering. Got 2 dump valves on my car. 1 is between the carb and intercooler and 1 is between the intercooler and turbo.
Now what i was wondering should the dump valve between the carb and intercooler have a air whooshing/leaking sound on idle???? As the other 1 don't make this noise.

Cheers Wizard

Answer:
think about it. at idle the engine is sucking in fuel and air...its creating a vacuum. the whole of the boost pipe circuit is in vacuum. the manifold is in vacuum.- hence so are the pipes that goto the dump valves. they are both being sucked open, but i reckon there maybe an imbalance in the pipe length which means one is being sucked open more than the other, or one of the diaphragms has a hole in it. the one closest to the carb will suck the air into it as its supplying air into the engine and short-circuiting the airfilter and intercooler....
do u see what i mean?

Subject: Head

Question:
What sort of gain (bhp/torque)would i expect to see from a Port & Polished head.

Answer:
depends what other mods you have got. better ask proper porters and polishers to get a better idea of the sort of bhp gains, but if they dont ask what else u have done to the engine, then walk away.- hint: how is head work gonna help if the air cant get past a restriction further up the stream any quicker (carb venturi), or out of the engine any faster (manifold/turbo restriction)?

Subject: FUEL

Question:
Just a quick question... i have noticed 4 star petrol is ltd in most petrol stations now... was wondering what tyoe i could use as a permanent replacement and what modification i would need to do to except i.e unleaded/super unleaded what works best fot the turbo besided 4 star....

Using fuel except 4 start will this hinder performance as 4 star is meant to burn better is this true??

Answer:
just use optimax/ultimate or super unleaded. premium unleaded makes the car a bit 'flat' performance-wise.

Subject: standed or hybrid

Question:
hey wiz, im looking for your opinion rather than advise. i got a stage 2 hybrid from turbo dynamics. never been used and i am on two minds about fitting it. i not really sure to keep it or sell it and contiue the work on my silicone hoses and stuff. i want my 5 to be rapid 0-60 and to be honest i dont care much after that. i bought the hybrid cause i thought this would be a good move, buteveryone i talk to saids it will make it slower cause off lack. and cause its new i dont want to fit just to find out. a got a grp a carb, so is it worth money for what i use it for or is a hybrid merlyfor the strip. 20 psi on a hybrid be better than 15 on a well set up standerd turbo.

thanks bud, kendo

Answer:
my opinion and my advice are very similar....
it depends on one thing, just what size is the turbo dynamics stage 2. to find out when it spins up, the you will have to fit it, but i can guarantee it will be better for your car than the standard, purely because it will have more flow and better boost capability, hence it will last longer and save u wonga, when a standard unit will pack its bags and go to the smoky heaven in the sky! you've got it, so just fit it.
