Subject: Pressure Leak Question: My turbo has been running at about 18psi for a while now and she has been fine. But recently she can only boost to about 12 -13psi! I have been round all the boost tubes to make sure they are tight and they were all fine, what is the easiest way of finding a pressure leak? Answer: there aint an easy way of checking, besides borrowing a mates boost pipe set and intercooler and seeing if its ok with that on. i.e it could be a real ball ache!!! also it could actually be that ur turrrrrrrrrrrrbo has started to break....especially if its standard, as they aint designed to run 18psi.... |

Subject: Knakered?????? Question: Hi, Just drove the car round the block for the first time in ages as its been sat for a while and the turbo was whining a bit and there was a bit of white smoke. Firstly would a turbo just suddendly go like that or does it take a while. or if it was oil starved the oil pressure would be nothing wouldnt it???? thanks Wiz Answer: sounds like alot of condensation in the exhaust. or you didn't prime the turbo when u first attempted to start the car, as all the oil tends to obey gravity and run to the sump, hence u need to crank the car for several attempts until the turbo sees some oil- else this causes it to blow! |

Subject: carb trouble Question: hey wiz. i'v just rebuilt my engine but i'v got carb trouble. it hesitates and is running rich. reduced fuel/ratio,it got better but not good enough. overhauled the carb but no luck. please help. u know everything!!!!!!!!! many thanks Answer: sounds like the accelerator pump is stuck, or the jet is blocked...or even you've managed to miss some seals out. one important one is on the accelerator pump jet (brass ,overhanging the venturi) the other is the mixture screw seal...tiny black seal round the screw. also the idle jet seal needs attention. |

Subject: burble exhaust Question: Hi wizard. Can you please tell me what kind of exhaust system gives you a burble and popping noise? cheers Answer: its not really the exhaust that does that, its overfuelling/ underfuelling or a leaky manifold/exhaust. admittedly an exhaust with very little in the way of baffles also helps. |

Subject: water in oil Question: Hi mate, im totally gutted, If you can remember I had water in my oil and a loss of boost pressure down to bout 10psi ish!! thing is i put a new head gasket on had the head skimmed new head bolts all done well and propper flushed the engine oil out and flushed the water system..... with two hours to spare before setting off to the RTOC get together at pod, my first run showed no improvement to before!!!! cant get the boost and there slowley is water in the oil again? the car runs fine no missing etc and a compression test shows no probs!(as before) The big question is mate....is it possible that there is a fault in the turbo causing the oil to pass through to the water jacket round the turbo, hence the cross contamination and 10psi boost loss? how can I test for this and can a grown man cry? the turbo has done bout 40 thou at 15 to 20 psi and is a stage 3, t3/t25! thanks again my mate hope you had a good wk end at pod! Adam Answer: i had an ok weekend at the pod, i even managed not to blow up!!! best get someones spare turbo and put that on, then see if it happens again. - after changing the oil obviously. still could be the radiator though, or even the head, but if the boost is low then it does point to the turbo. |

Subject: Running hotter than usual Question: Temperature gauge is showing higher than usual but fan cuts in and out as it should although it doesn't seem to reduce the needle. Engine seems to be hotter to the touch than before, no leaks, coolant does need topped up now and again. All components are quite new, rad, sensor, hoses etc. Answer: bleed the water system of air locks. replace the antifreeze in the water- i.e flush the ststem out....then get a new thermostat. also check for headgasket failure. |

Answer: dont be a chump. if u want more go, swap the timing sensor wires over, this will give you 4° advance. if that aint enuff then try making and adjustable timing sensor and wacking full advance on that too. but- dont run low octane fuel, else you may come a cropper. - this worked quite well on my sisters clio 1.4 RT....

Subject: Pressure Leak part 2 Question: Well I am running an alloy cooler with a set of silicon boost tubes! Alloy carb top. No perc fan, T25 hybrid from Ben @ Ges. Cup mod and a Grp A valve. I had to put a restricter in the pipe so that the bleed valve would allow it to go up to 18psi! Should there only be one restricter and where should it be? Where do you think the most likely place for leaks would be? Could it be a problem with the actuator? Answer: make sure the alloy carb top is correctly sealed onto the carb! you should put the restrictor in the pipe that supplies the bleed valve with boost, i.e from where its taken off from the carb/carbtop. |

Subject: Misfire @ 3k question id 4117 Question: Hi wizard, Just though I'd update you. I purchased a second hand carb and fitted, misfire still the same. Took the car along to PCS in Kinglassie, Fife, Scotland, where they had her going within 3 days, turns out it was them that had worked on my car before I owned it (stroke of luck there id say)! Some timing cog was out thats lines up with the distributor, or at least i think thats what he said! She's home now and going great, for the time being. Put the old carb on her when I got her home and she misfired again, turns out the original carb was infact goosed also. Anyways she's running great and hope to have her all painted and up for sale soon. Thanks again. Alex Answer: thanks for the responce glad you got it sorted in the end :

Subject: timing Question: well dont think the dizzy is wrong so could my timing b out? basically my boost gauge(read from carb top) reads 15psi but the car has no pull go.When it comes on boost there is jus no sudden woosh like there should b.Anything electrical i could check? anything u could suggest i could check would b greatly appriciated before i have 2 spend a fortune at a tunners! Answer: check for boost leaks, including the intercooler, and also manifold nuts that are missing make a difference. if u think the dizzy is 180° out then swap the leads around on it. but i still reckon it wont run. could be lack of fuel...when was the last time u changed yer fuel filter? |

Subject: 4235 - id vaccum line Question: in response Q 4235. if the vaccum line at the back of the manifold that sucks in oil fumes from the oil/air separator is blocked. would that cause the erratic idle? thanks for the help. Answer: no, if that line is blocked it wont be sucking in air into the manifold. so it definately shouldnt be idling funny!!! |

Subject: Blue/Grey smoke Question: Hi wiz, sorry to be a pain, I have a problem thats doing my head in. when i start my car its fine when i drive it is fine but when i pull up at traffic lights every now and then loads of bluey grey smoke pours out my exaust when i drive off after a hundred yards or so it seems to clear up. i only had my turbo reconditioned last week as the oil seals were gone. and now its doing this. the turbo is a ktr 230. i changed the oil and filter and spark plugs when i refitted it sunday but i didnt use a oil flush and it didnt seem to do this before. the oil i was told to use by the motor factor is 15/40 semi synthetic. the car also has a grp A carb if this would make a difference. please help as it gets embarrasing sat at the lights in a cloud of smoke. is the turbo still knackered, is it valve stem oil seals, Blocked breathers, Incorrect fuelling, Wrong Oil? sorry for the long question. thanks Andy. Answer: could be seals, but this tends to happen straight away when u turn the car on from cold. then it can also happen afetr a good run, as oil is still trying to drain away from the head. the turbo could still be knckered which could mean u still have s*** in yer oil or that ur oil pump is poopoo! block breathers can be easily rectified....by cleaning them! - favourite cock up is mending the breather pipe at the back of the rocker cover by using a smaller pipe, this does cause problems! if the smoke smells of fuel then its fuel if it smells of oil, then erm its oil...im assuming you aint smelled it yet? - both can appear bluey.... sorry for the very vague answer! |

Subject: door cards Question: Im thinking of making custom door cards out of perspex, is it easy to fit the levers on a flat surface, so they open outwards rather than upwards? Is it just a case of mounting them accordingly, as long as the hook still pulls the lock mechanism (to open the door)? Or is there more to it than that? Answer: as long as u get enough leverage it shouldnt really matter should it? try ones out of a different car, or even use a 'sash pull' thing. best of luck! |

Subject: what could be.... Question: yo wizz, kendo here again. ive recently bought muself a nice stage 2 hybrid, which i intend to let rip on the streets of glasgow soon, however could you advise me on what safty messures to install, if in intend to boost up to 20. im accurate in guessing a upgraded head gasket will be required but what else? anyidea on price too? cheers mate Answer: dont bother with the head gasket yet, i bet its been changed before and the likely hood is that its a 'grp A' one... just make sure the headbolts are up to the required torque settings....60Nm as haynes says.....70Nm as most people on here do em to! you better uprate your carb jets too.... else u WILL BLOW UP!!! also make sure u get oil flowing out of the oil feed to the turbo before u start the car, else u will void ur warranty and screw ur turbo and no one will be available to pass u the kleenex. |

Answer: yeah, literally cut them and swap them over. look ontop of the gearbox, under a little meal box section....black wire loops up and joins to grey plastic connector attached to bracket on bulkhead over the turbo...this then goes to the middle plug of the ecu unit, behind the bulkhead. |
