Question:
What modification, if any would need to be made to the exhaust manifold.
Would any modifiaction need to be made to the downpipe???

Cheers Wizard

Subject: Suspension

Question:
Hi,

Yesterday on the motorway my accelerator cable snapped luckily the RAC man repaired it with a connector.

I was wondering if you could advise the following.

Would you buy a renault throttle cable for £18 or europarts one for £13 i assume they are the same length i.e better quality? which one?

Also my steering is making a grinding type of noise when i turn, its not coming back i have to pull it back towards the middle??

I am having the car in a garage on Saturday so i am getting the following track rod ends europarts £9.5 renault £15.

Top strut bearing renault £15 europarts £8.99.

Steering UJ europarts £11.52.

Would u suggest going for renault parts or are Europarts goods enough??

Also can you suggest any other bits i may need regarding the problem described as i can take parts back if not needed.

Respect...

Sat

Answer:
im sure Europarts bits are fine. alot of reno stuff is over priced anyway. i can't suggest any other bits to try though. sounds like u got all bases covered.

Question:
yea my 5 bin eatin tryres alive and it pulls every way possible i know the tracking needs doing but i dont think that will help much my mate said get the camber angles adjusted or something is that correct??? if its not the tracking how will i get her to drive in a straight line again???

Answer:
if your car is lowered then it will pull everywhere. ur mate is correct in saying that u need to get the camber sorted else it will keep happening. BUT GET YOUR TRACKING DONE FIRST just incase.

Subject: Damn battery!

Question:
Hey Wiz! I have had problems with my 5's battery recently. The car is used daily. The AA say the alternator is fine (13.8v) and the place where I got the battery from say the battery is fine. The battery just seems to 'die' after a while. What could it be? Perc fan maybe? Anyway, I am gonna fit a voltage gauge to monitor the voltage now. I guess that's fairly straight forward to fit? Any other bright ideas?
Cheers. Gooner.

Answer:
if you have an immobiliser and alarm fitted these drain the battery constantly.

Subject: turbo actuator pipe

Question:
hi wiz, today i warmed the car up and revin it gently, everything seemed fine, i opened the bonnet up and noticed the actuator pipe became disconnected,so i put it back on and it was still revin the same no problem, what would happen if i carried on driving with this pipe disconnected?

any reason why it could of been blown off by turbo pressure or something?

thanx

Answer:
yeah turbo pressure could of blown it off.....BUT!!!- if it stays off then you get the max boost the turbo can produce, and feck yer car in the process.

Subject: Max size Intercooler

Question:
Hi,
I have the opportunity to lay my hands on a large grill mounted intercooler and just wanted to check if it's worth it, the core size is 615mmx300mmx68mm and end to end its 800mm. Will this be to large?

Answer:
only way to really tell is take off the bumper and grill and stick it in the gap, then put all the parts back on and see if it catches.

Subject: Blowing Up

Question:
I dont know if you were familiar with the problems that Topo had with his 6 before he sold it, but now i have, and inherited the said problem. Basically the engine was rebuilt and shortly after there was a nasty knocking from the bottom end. Now when i bought the car i knew there was this problem but i never assumed there would be this many *lol* I've got the engine out and took the head off and the crank wouldn't move at all even with loads of effort, so i removed the pistons one by one, and no1 piston was seriously damaged on the sides, like it had been hitting each side of the liner (the liner was very scored) the other pistons and liners seemed ok apart from no3 when i pulled it out, the ring came out in two pieces frown
Now there is a question here somewhere i promise, what would cause this to happen so soon after a rebuild, could it be that the head is so overskimmed? its 72mm
Any help would be appreciated

Answer:
the head is getting a little thin, i ran 72.5mm for a year and it was ok..just about.
from the sounds of it the piston crown has become too hot and expanded in the bore, and 'wiped' the rings out down the liner, hence scoring it. this could be caused by a number of reasons, besides too hot an inlet charge, and too much boost, too much advance and too much compression.
my advice is get a 'fatter' head wink replace the scored liners and pistons, with new or 2nd hand(re-honed and with new rings) then see what happens. hope fully all should be ok.

Subject: torsion bars

Question:
hello again,

Tried doing the bars with a bolt and spacer but it just grinds the bolt thread.

do I need a particular kind of bolt?

Thanks

Answer:
a stronger bolt perhaps? - look at the top of the bolt and it'll tell you the tensile rating of it. then get one with a higher rating.
usually labelled 8.8 , then 10.9 then 12.9 or summat like that.

Subject: oil pot

Question:
could you please tell me the purpose of the oil pot and can i remove it

Answer:
the oil pot? - do you mean the oil breather pot next to the waterpump?
it seperates the oily vapour from the sump. it lets the oil drip back down and the gases escape elsewhere.

Subject: Max intercooler size

Question:
Hi,
Again, about my last question I didn't mean problems as to the size to fit it! That’s not a problem; I was referring to problems with over cooling etc...Anyway, the core size is 615mmx300mmx68mm sorry if I didn't make it clear in the last question...

Thanks

Answer:
overcooling, aha...well...thats easy...
fit it, and if it does start to overcool the inlet charge (unlikely but it can happen) then just cover a bit of the intercooler with a plate of some description, so the air cant cool the bit its covering. eventually u will reach a happy medium.

Subject: GTT engine swap into R9 with F series engine

Question:
is there any compatibility issues with installing a used GTT engine into the 1987 R9 GTA wich originally had a F3R from Laguna. This is basicly a R9 GTX with slight engine bore and stroke changes for Amercian market.

My main concern is keeping my quick ratio power steering unit when the F series pump is not compatible with C3J engine belts or mounts.

What about fuel pressure and engine wirring harness. MY R9 GTA uses 14.5 psi fuel pump with the Bendix single point TBI injection.

Answer:
you may have to ditch the power steering as it really is gonna be a bstard of a job to keep it.
you can probably use the original harness, and just select certain things the c1j lump needs....such as the alt connections and the starter connections.
the fuel pressure reg will probably have to be changed to a gtt one, and the pump changed to a BMW E30 external one. - 3.5 bar 120 litres an hr. the aei unit runs off a +ve feed and the pick up from the flywheel.....
i reckon it wouldnt be that hard....

Subject: Turning up the Boost in R21 vol2

Question:
Cheers Wiz,
Thanx for Your advices allready.

You said that I can take away the amal valve, but what do I do with the pipes ?
What that Amal valve does in first place ?
Has it something to do with the halfing the 1st gear boost pressure ??

And second thing is the bleedvalve, can I just put it same way like in 5GTT ?
--> To the actuator pipe ?

You said that you have installed two ?

I must sound like really ROOKIE frown

Answer:
The amal valve is basically an electronic bleed valve controlled by the engine management. It is used to set the boost to the std 13.2psi, and also to limit boost in first gear, and when engine coolant temp is below 50 centigrade (clever, innit?)
The pipes from it are nothing more than what you would have from a bleed valve. There is a feed from a boost hose, an outlet to the actuator and an outlet for bled air which feeds back in to the air intake. Basically you can replace the amal valve with a bleed valve, and block off the bled air outlet so it wont suck unfiltered air from behind the filter. It's ok to leave the wiring connector unattached, but make sure it's secure and not hanging off the bottom of the car.
Remember not to drive hard when the engine is cold (amal valve or not, warm it up before driving on heavy throttle).
Yes, I have 2, one in the engine bay on a set bleed to hold the boost at 1 bar and then one in the car which gives me anything up to 1.5 bar plus. Basically i replaced the amal valve so I control initial boost levels instead of the engine management.

Subject: over heating

Question:
in need of help mate, i took the car out for a quick blast last night, 5 mins after leaving the temp went right to the top and all the water was gone, ive spent all day playing with it and just cant figure it out. there seems to be no leaks and its not loosing water, when the temp starts to rise all the hoses are getting hot especially the top one going to the rad, the only one which is not getting hot at all is the one from the bottom of the rad to the water pump, the fan is also no kicking in so i bypassed that but still the same proplem, ive had the rad out no blockages there, water flows out the bleed screws no broblem, no mayo in oil or water, ive taken the thermastat out of the top hose as well still no joy. any advice would be appreciated thanks
Marc.

Answer:
either youve got the biggest air lock in history in the water system, or you have a leak...
maybe the waterpump has broken too, but i find it hard to beleive that its stopped working entirely, as usually the bearings go in em first. perhaps the bottom hose is kinked, this would mean water could pass thru the rad.

Subject: engine cleaners

Question:
can you tell me if the engine treatment chemicals work? Ive heard that they can restore lost power in old engines, ie 10k boost, wynns engine treatment etc. And is it better to get the kind that you add to the petrol or that you spray into the intake while the car is running?

Answer:
apparently optimax does all this anyway??????
i used to use redex sprayed into the carb and in the fuel too. but now i just clean everything when i rebuild it...*lol* i personally dont think it is that effective in the gtt turbo engine, as u always find carbon build up on the piston crowns.
id try it once or twice just to see...then never use it again.

Subject: Coolant

Question:
Hello Wiz.

Is it normall to have to to top up the water/coolant every two weeks or so? Or do u think i could have a problem? There is def no water leak and car feels fine.

Cheers for any advice

Graham

Answer:
ill give you a clue, there is definately a water leak. No its not normal to keep topping up your water.
after getting the car hot, and the water system pressurised, squeeze all hoses, and listen carefully for hissing or bubbling. then id suggest doing up all jubille clips with an extra turn or mending the split/pinhole you find.
where else is the water going to go???- besides the H/G..which u assure me aint blown... smile

Subject: boost pressure

Question:
i have group a carb and uprated fuel pump what is the most psi i can run on standard turbo?

Answer:
it depends on what your jets are in the grp A carb. the standard blower can put out about 28psi, but you'd blow up well before then due to overheating of the inlet charge...
id stick to 18-20psi
