Subject: horn

Question:
hi wizard !
my r5 s horn has never worked since i bought it can u tell me where the horn is so i can sort it out ps whats that thing under the water bottle cheers fella!

Answer:
your horn isnt working???? -and you dont know where it is???? - didnt your folks teach you about things like that? - ever wondered what the meat and two veg were between yer legs were? *lol*
i suggest a course of psychotherapy, or even a visit to a strip club....
failing that, you could take off the front bumper and take a look at the passenger side front. this is where your horn unit is, the compressor for it is under the waterbottle, and the relay for it is next to it.

Subject: missfire

Question:
Just wondering if you can help me?
Just fitted my new hybrid turbo and I have a miss fire at high revs now.
Not sure what it is but the seals on the old turbo had gone and it was letting oil into the intake side as well as down the exhaust, so the was loads of oil in the intake.
So was wondering if it was the oil causing it. the turbo is set to run at 10psi low boost and 21psi high boost. it only missfires at high boost. also the over boost switch is disconnected, so don't think it's that. It's got a group a carb which I haven't had the chance to set the mixture up properly yet. the plugs are ngk racing plugs from k tec and a set of normal leads.
would be gratefull for the help.
Thanks

Answer:
which racing plugs are they?- B9EG's will prob be too cold. best go for B8EG's or B8EVX's.
also...it prob wont be the oil from the last turbo- its more then likely the fact u need an uprated fuel pump, as the carb maybe running alittle low on fuel, as the turbo is hybrid and does flow better....
just some suggestions smile

Subject: Misfire @ 3K

Question:
Hi,

I've recently purchaed a Renault 5 Turbo 1989 G Reg. I don't know much details about it other than it had the head done and a new hybrid turbo fitted just before xmas 2003. The receipt for the head repair advised that after re - assemble they indicated a misfire at about 3K revs. I believe the car has been sitting idle ever since up until I bought it.

When I got it it wouldnt even idle properly withough mucking about with the choke.

I gave the car to the mechanic and a split vaccum hose repaired means it now idles without messing about with the choke.

However the car seems to be stressed about 2K and misfires giving pops and bangs around 3K. It doesnt rev over 3K.

The mechanic has changed the plugs and leads. He has checked compresson, fuel pressure, and the overboost switch.

He reckons the carb is goosed!

It has a hybrid turbo, dump valve, stainless exhause, adjustable boost etc, not much else I can tell you.

From the info I've given do you think the carb is the most likely cause or is there anything else the mechanic can check?

If it is the carb can it be overhauled or would I have to source a second hand or replacement unit?

Many thanks in advance for your help, should you need any other info to help please let me know.

Alex

Answer:
check the tdc lead from the top of the gearbox. see that it aint fried on the manifold.
if the carb is goosed, it aint a huge deal - its always fixable. u can get the replacement gasket sets from many of the tuners and also many carb repair specialists. the cost of a new carb is VERY prohibitive (i heard it was £500)!!!- the gasket set can cost between £20-£40 depending where you go.
MAKE SURE YOU CLEAN THE CARB OUT PROPERLY!!!
after you've done this get back me! smile

Subject: STARTING/STALLING

Question:
Hello the car I use other than my turbo is a normal 1.4 R5. In the last 6 months its not started first time. It basically spins slowere a slower but then if I turn the ignition again it starts instantly.. hmm??

Also If ive been caining it a bit or coming off the motorway and brake it nearly and sometimes does stal??
would a carb overhaul kit help this?

Thanks a lot!

Answer:
check your earth leads to the engine...this may cause slow starter action.
try cleaning the carb first, this may get rid of some of the sh1t that lurking in there.

Subject: Brake feel

Question:
Hi there,

Just wondering if you could tell me if the following should happen.

When the engine is off and I press my brake peday should the pedal either go straight to the floor or be rock hard, then when the engine is running pedal 'feel' resumes normal working order.

Cheers

Answer:
if u pump the pedal it should go hard....and then if u keep yer foot on it, and start the car, it should then depress alittle.

Subject: carb leaking petrol

Question:
Please help Mr Wizard!

Recently fitted overhaul kit to my carb and new 150main jet and 90 air corrector, now when I try and start car petrol is leaking out where the accelarater pump and hose is on drivers side of carb, the common prob is the diapham being split but this isnt the problem as checked diapham and put old one back on also doesnt appear to be the hose going to it either the only thing i can think of is the black float has a crack on the arm where it adjoins the rod that holds it would this be causing the problem? or what else could it be?
Thank you

Answer:
are you sure u aint connected the petrol hose to the accelerator pump???
if the petrol is coming out of the acc pump unit, then u must have a split diaphragm, or you've connected it up wrong. if the petrol s leaking from the top of the carb then it's gonna be a knackered float chamber jet.

Subject: Misfire @ 3K Question ID 4117

Question:
Hi wizard again,

Just a though, I did not own this car when the misfire developed, nor did I own it when the hybrid turbo was fitted.

Is there anything that could have caused a misfire when the hybrid turbo was fitted, for instance should anything else have been replaced at the same time, i.e. maybe uprating the fuel pump or something?

Don't think this is the problem though as surely the company that fitted the turbo would have road checked it after fitting?

Just a though.

Alex

Answer:
could well be fuelling, as certain circuits within the carb open and shut at differing revs/ boost levels.
swap the carb, and then see what happens, if all else fails go and see yer local '5 guru, or at least guru wannabe' wink

Question:
what is this all about????

ghow does it work and what advantages does it give?

cheers wiz

Answer:
simply put :
spray water into petrol/air mix.

this cools the inlet charge down, and supresses detonation, which is necessary over 23psi....

down side: costs alot.

Subject: Running In

Question:
I ve blown a head gasket. My car is currently at the garage having new gaskets fitted. I have asked them to fit a KTR cam while it's there. When is the best time to get the car set up? As soon as the work is carried out or do I need to run it in? If it needs running in, how many miles do you suggest?

Cheers,
Cabs

Answer:
the car needs to be run in for 20mins at above 2.5k revs for the cam. the head gasket may need retightening after the engine has got warm. so i reckon by the time the garage has thrashed the tits off yer motor, everything will be nicely bedded in.
the get it set up smile

Cars been sat in garage for ages, would that cause the starter to go??

Answer:
if u look at the angle of the head and rocker cover, you will notice it slants backwards. this means that if u got a dodgy rocker cover seal then oil will leak thru the manifolds, and land on your starter motor. this then gums it up whilst been cooked by the exhaust. so whilst its been sat in the garage it could of been leaking onto the starter....or more likely it could of been corroding away.
which could suggest that the large white wire that supplies the solenoid with juice has boogered up.- this can be traced from the large connector under the water bottle over the top of the gearbox to the starter motor. you could always try to start the motor turning by touching the batt +ve direct to the starter solenoid....this would eliminate any connection issue, and tell u if the starter if feckereerererererered!

Subject: Dodgy clocks

Question:
Hello wizard,
I'm having problems with my speedo and oil pressure gauge.
The oil pressure gauge works when it feels like it, or some times a tap on top of the dash works.
As for the speedo, well thats just packed in. Ive fitted a new sensor and lead, it's a single lead now instead of the old 2 piece one for some reason. Anyway it did used to work but occasionaly go off. I would give it a tap and it would come back on. I bought the new sensor just incase. Also with the ignition on but engine off, if I put the indicator's on the rev counter goes up and down, to about 1000 rpm or so, or when I put any thing electrical on.Can you help. Thanks.

Answer:
sounds like an earthing problem, might be time to take the dash unit apart and clean all contacts with very fine sandpaper (1200 grit?) or just try someone elses clocks that you know work.

Subject: OCTANE

Question:
Do octane supplements make a real difference in performance?
I understand that more octane is needed for very high boost but would it increase bhp on my car which is running 14psi? If so are there any disadvantages?

it probably wont help boost your bhp at 14psi. it allows u to run more boost and thats about it.
disadvantage- no left money after you've paid for some.

Subject: Turning up the Boost in R21

Question:
Hello Wizz,
Can you help me with the boost problem?
Is there anyway to turn up the boost, so that the ecu/computer won´t try to bring it down again..

Can I just disconnect the monitoring systems ? (One with the three way electric valve near Air filter, and one which goes to ECU?? )

And second, I found tips for adjusting the MAP sensor (it was for the Jeep´s EFI but seems like it uses same kind of system)

Do you know is it usable? I already installed the Lambda to exhaust for the
CO meter)

Sorry for my bad english frown

Car is R21 Turbo -phase1 (1988)
Thanx in advance...

Answer:
Yes, if you want to remove the amal valve (3 way valve) thats fine. I Use a bleed valve in the engine bay and an incar as well for fine adjustment, the extra bleed is sometimes needed on the 21.

Leave the MAP sensor well alone, its a sealed unit and is not adjustable. You can run up to about 18psi on an otherwise std system without worries *providing* all sensors and systems are functioning correctly. Make sure it's running right before you start turning up the power and you'll have a quick, relible motor.

Subject: My five got flue...

Question:
Cheers Mate,

I wonder if you know what´s the problem.
It seems I´m loosing power after 4000rpm at gears 4 and 5.
Boost reading shows 1 bar, but the car won´t accelerate so good as it should be?
I have adjustable fuel valve and idling flow is bout 300grams or 0.3 bar.
How much the fuel pressure shoud be, if my boost is approx 1 bar?
I can easily check that, if I know the right values.

I must start somewhere ???

Thanx In Advance and greets from Finland

Answer:
i think the carb fuel pressure should be about 5psi above the boost pressure at all times. so 1bar = 14.7psi so your fuel pressure should be 19.7psi.

Subject: why a Renault 5?

Question:
This is cabs' housemate here. I own a Seat Toledo (1993 model) 1.6i. To be honest its shit. However its spent less time in the garage than Cab's Renault 5 which seems to be a cash printing machine for the local mechanic. Having said this, the black beauty that is my Toledo is so bad that I am thinking of trading it in despite the fact that I can fit 3 fat ladies in the back, which is great for Saturday nights. Cab's suggests a Renault 5 GTTurbo will sort me right out. Do you think that this is the car for me??

Answer:
no i don't think a R5 will be the car for you as you are far to boring, why not go up in the world and get a nice golf mk3. im sure cabs will rue the day he bought a 5 gtt, but in the meantime let him have his fun, until his bank manager cant take it any more.

Subject: aftermarket gauges??

Question:
ok mate, im looking at getting the following aftermarket gauges -

1. oil temp gauge.
2. water temp gauge.
3. oil pressure gauge.
so... regarding the plumbing of these,

do i plumb them up to the std sensors""were are they""? anything iffy i should know? as i know the dash one tend to fail or read inaccuratly will that mean my new ones willread dodgy too ???

any particular brand u recomend?

cheers matey.

Answer:
use the senders that come with the gauges!- dont use the reno ones as they prob wont work properly.
i dont recommend any particular brand.
btw:
oil pressure sender is at from of block under the turbo oil feed pipe.
the water temp sensor may have to be cut and shut in a pipe, assuming it aint replacing the normal sensor at the back of the water pump.
oil temp sensor may ave to be 't' d into the oil feed pipe to the turbo as well.
