Subject: copper rad Question: hey wiz just brought a new rad..copper one second hand...whats involved in taking the old one off and the new copper one on? i aint dun it before..i have to drain the fluids? how etc please..cheers Answer: undo the water and oil pipes to it. take the plug off the rad fan sensor and the fan itself. lift it out. dont worry about the fluids, u can top them up after you've finished. |

Answer: sounds like a manifold gasket - which you need to tighten up, or a tappet that needs adjusting. |

Subject: gauge Question: wizard! ive fitted a boost gauge that goes up to 20 psi when ticking over it measures 25 hg vac? what is the hg vac what does it mean does it mean there is a leak somewhere? Answer: hg vac, is the unit of measurement of vacuum. at idle the engine produces a vacuum, hence why it reads negative pressure. - there is no leak. |

Subject: dump valve Question: dear wizard i am getting oil spatt all over my engine its coming from the dump valve its a plastic type bosch dump valve why is this oil shooting out what is wrong with my engine? Answer: you have oil in the intercooler. wash it out with thinners, and see if it happens again. could be turbo is buggered, or you need to run an altered breather system....to stop oil being fed back into the inlet of the turbo.- block the hole and put a filter on the pipe u take off. |

Subject: god only nows Question: hi wiz i put a new engine into my five but im having all sorts of elecrical probs, first the starter motor runs all the time and the only way to stop it is to disconnect the battery, also the window scooshers are on all the time as well, all lightw come up on the dash board but its only they 2 that are playing up, any ideas plz ?? Answer: the main wiring to the starter motor is touching the block or more likely the exhaust. or you've fitted the wires to the starter motor incorrectly, and its touching across the solenoid. ie. you've fecked up. |

Subject: thermostat Question: ive just got a low temp thermostat how do i fit it and where abouts does it go is it an easy job to do Answer: the thermostat goes where your old thermostat went, this can be found next to the googly valve and the ABS belt. just messin, just stick it in the top water hose from the rad to the waterpump. its about an easy job as you'll get.- unless u have one arm.... |

Subject: bhp Question: hi i have recently had a rolling road tune my car is running at 15 psi with a full s/s magnex system and a piper filter the guy said it was 120 at the fly wheel is this good? the standard car poweris supposed to be 115 bhp at 10 psi has mine lost a lot of powerand is this standard figure of bhp based on th fly wheel or wheels cheers wizard Answer: standard is at the flywheel. like i said previously, get the restrictor out of ur exhaust. you may also have aboost leak. |

Subject: restrictor Question: hi wizard ive just looked at my magnex exhaust and i dont know where u mean about cutting the restrictor out what does it look like? can u pin point it? if i do cut it out will i have to get another piece of exhaust and weld it in the position that was in?please help me i dont know a lot about this sort of thing Answer: ok, its in the main straight section, when u pull the join apart. shine a torch into it and u can see it gets very narrow there. you maybe able to cut it out with a small drill bit affair. |

Subject: Loosin powa n stallin at idle n idling at wrong speed! Question: Alrite wiz! My cars really doin my nut in at d mo, so n e help wud b much appreciated! Ive recently fitted a k-tec incar boost adjuster n boost gauge wiv a 130 main jet n strapped the intercooler! Actually jubilee ent on intercooler cuz itz broken! Im runnin 6 - 14 psi! Ive also recently changed my accelerator cable az my car wasnt idling properly e.g wen i slowed down 2 stop d revs were staying high on about 1600 thousand rpm n i waz having 2 put my foot under d accelerator pedal 2 release it, n bring revs bak down 2 1000 rpm! D new cable sorted this out 4 aproximately 15 mins n then it went bak 2 how it waz again, e.g idling @ 1600 rpm n haz bin d same since! Also @ about same time az cable waz changed, (not sure if this linked 2 changin cable) every now n agen wen i went 2 put my foot down, i wud loose powa n d car wud chug n want 2 cut out. So i wud pull ova, pop bonnet n chek everyting iz tight, let engine run 4 abit n it wud run fine 4 a while, til it wud randomly do it agen! Now itz stopped doin that, but randomly cutz out wen i slow down 2 a stop n then refuses 2 start az itz so hot! So i av 2 wait 4 it 2 cool down 2 start it agen! Ive bin chekin my car 4 tings dat may b rong n ive found dat d carb top gasket iz split in2! Also i dont have an anti perc fan sensor, n d anti perc fan pipe hole which breaks off from main boost hose iz blocked off n so iz hole 4 it on solenoid! My m8 reckons dis wil b causin fuel 2 evaporate n make it run lumpy! But ive never had a sensor n pipes av alwayz bin blocked off since i bought car, so it wud seem strange that it wud only start doin it now, az ive had it 2 years! Im not sure if all these problems r linked or not! Im guna buy a perc fan sensor n put perc fan pipes on n unblock holes 2 c if it makes n e difference! Sorry bout so many questions but i jus dont kno wotz goin on!! Hope u can help!! Answer: the clamp on the accelerator cable is squeezing the plastic outer sheath onto the inner cable, and causing it to stick.... use a bit of sandpaper...double it over, and this will help stop the cable from moving.- also shorten the carb return spring to give it extra strength. the chugging is a stuck acclerator pump which is on the side of the carb..u may have to remove carb top, and clean the jet as well as the unit on the drivers side of the carb.- it squirts fuel into engine when you first press the pedal. dont bother unblocking the solenoid hole....this is better blocked off. try my guide first and then get back to me. |

Answer: you are indeed correct.....15psi is safe on a standard carburettored car. read the boards and tweek the fuelling and you'll be blowing liners and headgaskets cos of the HUGE power you'll be running in no time...... *sigh* ;o) |

Subject: Won Question: Hello Wiz, Got a starting problem when the car has been for a run, when you turn the key there is just nothing, no sounds just nothing. Wait for a while bnnet open to let the heat escape and then she starts fine. I am asuming it is a starter motor issue, is there anything that I can check before buying a replacement? Thanks! Answer: check the wiring over the top of the gearbox that feeds the starter. sometimes a connection goes bad there. also the connector of DOOM can corrode up.....right underneath the expansion bottle. if these are ok, the be my guest...... change that starter motor

Subject: perc fan problem Question: hi wiz,and thx for the last bit of advice,the new rad is now cooling luverly!on my way home from thruxton my perc fan sensa in heat shield poped out and got cooked on the turbo!my speedo was all over the place,i stopped and put in back in place,the 2 insulated spade connections had melted the insulation and since then i have no perc fan?ive changed the 2 conections and the senser itself,the wires seem fine not melted! i also changed the 15amp fuse which is in the wiring to the perc fan motor,still no change,its now a git to start,and as ive read some stuff in the past about fires ect related to perc fans cos of constant power im a little worried,i just cant afford the proffesionals at the mo,im of to zolder nxt week and dont wanna go up in smoke in a foreign land please help!thx Answer: check the relays down by the perc fan, to see they are ok. if they are then you may have to rig up a switch so you can run the perc fan manually. if the perc fan wiring has a fuse in it, then dont worry about fire probs, as this sorts it. most 5's are a git to start *lol* |

I will use fibre-glass resin to fill the grooves, but do I need a pro spray gun to re-paint them of will a few spray cans do it? Subject: Whistling turbo Question: Yo wiz, firstly when the boost is building up while driving there is a very loud constant whistling noise, i'd say its been getting progressively worse the last few months. I had a new turbo just over a year ago, which is still on standard boost and i have a bailey piston dump valve, is something on the way out? or is it likely to be just a leak in the boost pipes and such? if so wheres the most likely place for it to leak? Secondly my big end bearings are worn, i wonder if you could tell me if the bearings i have are standard or if they are for a reground crank? there are 2 sets of numbers:- 7700712673 and (NB) A29SI, cheers boss your time is much appreciated. Answer: speak to renault about the bearing numbers, as i aint got access to any reno computer system at the moment. as for the hissing, it could be any number of things....just remember, bailey dv's stick open!!! although it could also be a split pipe. usually the one from the turbo to the intercooler. |

Subject: no boost Question: hi wiz im havin a problem with my boost. i just had a new turbo fitted an run it in properly turned up the boost to about 0.8 of a bar. it was runnin fine for a few days an then started to lose power its been gettin worse an now theres no power in 1st or 2nd an a tiny bit in 3rd 4th 5th. ive checked the boost pipes and seem fine an blocked of the dv still none the wiser please help i cant stand little novas tryin to race me an theres nothin i can do about it cheers dan. oh an do renaults ever run properly for more than a week?! Answer: intercooler leak. manifold leak. mashed-up turbo my selcta!!! R5's do work reliably....when u don't drive them

Subject: whining turbo Question: hi when i put my foot dwn the turbo starts to wind up as normal but when i push it hard it starts to whine. also it doesnt seam to pull as well as i expected there is no smoke or anythin out the exhaust. what could cause the whine?? thanks Answer: the turbo could be about to break. or there is a boost leak that need sorting. either way you'll have to get yer hands dirrrrty! aiiiii! *- by break i mean the turbine blades could be touching the housing, thus causing big bucks damage.- which causes a whine, and lowers boost levels. |

Subject: COOLING/FAN Question: HEY WIZ BACK AGAIN..ERM BASICALLY I HAVE PUT IN A COPPER CORE RAD AND CHECKED THAT IT WORKS COS FED TWO WIRES TO THE BATTERY...HOWEVER THE CAR GETS HOT WITH DRIVING TO OVER NORMAL..I.E RIGHT NEAR THE TOP OF THE DIAL FOR TEMP...SO THE FAN WORKS BUT DONT KICK IN..CHECKED MOST THINGS..WILL I STILL B ABLE TO FIT A SWITCH THAT I TURN ON MANUALLY WHEN MY CAR GETS HOT EVEN THOUGH IT DONT DO IT AUTOMATICALLY AND WHAT DOES IT INVOLVE? DOES RENO 5 NORMALLY GET THAT HOT EVEN WHEN DRIVING AROUND LETS SAY AT 30-40 MPH CONSTANT? CHEEERS WIZ SUGGESTIONS APPRECIATED. Answer: back once again like the renegade master? have u bled the water systam correctly?- and have u checked that your thermostat is working ok? i check them first! then id check the rad fan switch, and then the relay that powers it that is infront of the alternator. after you've done all that and still wanna connect a manual switch, then get a postive off the alt, or in the car, feed it to a switch, and then from the switch to the positive side of the fan, as the -ve is earthed anyway. |

Also my main boost pipe (carb 2 intercooler) haz d hole 4 pipe 2 solenoid blocked off, n d hole 4 dis pipe on solenoid iz blocked up wiv cork! Do i wana unblock deze 2 holes n connect pipe bak up wen i fit my sensor or leave dem blocked off?? Cud u also tel me why i wud b beta off blockin or unblockin holes! Thanx alot wiz!! Answer: keep it blocked up. if the solenoid that connects to it is faulty then u will loose boost. |

Subject: Tyres for std rims. Question: Alright Wiz! Thanks for your advice recently, as the only 195/55 tyres that I can get offer low levels of performance, I was thinking about changing tyre sizes in order to get a tyre that offers more grip. Which tyre size would be better suited to the GT, a 185/60 or a 185/55? Cheers matey! Answer: always choose the ones with the lower side profile, it'll make your car handle alittle better as there will be less tyre flex. hence the 185/55 is better. |
