Subject: BOOSTING Question: HI THERE I JUST WONDERD IF YOU COULD HELP I HAVE REPLACED THE BOOST HOSES WHICH THE ONE FROM THE TURBO TO INTER COOLER HAD SPLIT BUT NOW WHEN IT GETS TO MAX BOOST IM GETTING A REALLY LOUD HISSING AND THROUGH A FAST GEAR CHANGE IM NOT HEARING THE DUMP VALVE BUT THEN I TURNED THE BLEED VALVE RIGHT DOWN AND IT THEN SOUNDS OK?? Answer: check to see that the connection to the overboost sensor hasn't split, as it held really weakly in the hose....and can come apart. loud hissing always means boost leaks. if this dont sort yer dump valve out then check the diaphragm and the hoses to it. also check the hose where it connects to the turbo....as this always splits there! |

Subject: boostin Question: Fitted in car boost b`valve, twin core intercooler, sil hoses, and boost gauge. The boost gauge it taken from the top of the carb and is reading 15psi (with out the b`valve conected), how much is it safe to take it on a standerd turbo? thanks, PS; i`m gettin my money`s out of you ant i LOL Answer: unless you sort the fuelling out, and put bigger jets in the carburettor, then 15psi is the max u can run the car, otherwise you may blow your headgasket. if u were to sort your fuelling out then ive seen 28psi out of my standard blower.....needless to say it didnt last long! *lol* |

Subject: starting probs Question: hola, I have been trying to start a ph2 r5gt which has been standing for 2-3 years, the engine is not ceased theres clean oil and water in it but every time I try to turn it over it sounds very crunchy( from the flywheel), the spark is very weak and seems to be firering iregulary. Also at the point when it seems like its gonna start there is a ruff crunchy clunk from the engine. So far I have cleaned all the earths tested the starter, changed the coil, changed plgs, changed leads, dizzy cap, timing sensor and removed airfilter but still no joy. I havnt tryed draining the tank and putting fresh juice in yet, the fuel is reaching the carb though because there is a strong smell of fuel when the car turns over on the starter. Any ideas would be most welcome cause I dont have much idea what I'm doing most of the time!!! Answer: try doing a compression test first. this may indicate ring or piston problems! then get back to me! |

Subject: leeks Question: hi wizard,i get puddles in the back foot wells,i think sunroof is fine, could it be back window seals.or wot do you think thank for your time. Answer: if it happens only if it rains, then check the door cards, i had two cars that dripped water off the bottom of the glass, which then landed on the electric window motor (causing this to feck up) and then leak behind the speaker pod and into the car!!!- i checked when it was pi$$ing down outside!!! *lol* failing that, u may have to short circuit the heater matrix, to see if that has gone kaput! |

Subject: Low Compression Pistons Question: hi, ive been reading over previous questions about low comp pistons but still dont know whether to get them or not. Mike48 has them, and thats the kind of spec im going for, so wot do u recommend. I only ask cos im reconditioning the engine at t mo and dont want to take it out for a long while once i got it back in. cheers Answer: you gotta look at the economy of low comp pistons. if one gets kneckered, then u gotta get a standard machined at extra cost. besides that Glen who got the 12.4sec run in his renault 11 turbo ran a higher than standard compression ratio. personally i wouldnt bother, but they do allow for better detonation resistance....but then again thats what water injection is there for too

Subject: Cam ok? Question: I have a kent rally cam KCRT 200 its got stamped on the end. do u think this'll be ok to get me to 200bhp+. do u recommend any of the performance shops more than others because there r big differences in prices for the 'same' products. Gttuning and bb the 2 places i wanna get my stuff from any good. cheers Answer: the rt200 is good for 200bhp, its just not been really tried out by many people, although i know for a fact this is changing!!! i cant recommend anyone over anyone else, cos that would mean im biased! - so impartiality is the name of the game. so if i said i wouldnt touch those shady GT/BB/EP/GDI//TORSION/PMT with a barge pole, that would be totally untruthful, and further more unethical! let me go and hug a tree.... |

Subject: moding a t25 rover Question: hello sorry for the lack of knowledge but I`ve just bought a T25 from a rover 820. I have heard that this can be easily modded to fit the r5. Or can be matched to parts of the standard T2. Which parts of the two could i make fit with little machining. I work in a machine shop so modding should not be a problem. thanks Answer: you need to take both the housings off, and rotate them so they emulate a renault turbo. you also need part of the bottom oil feed pipe to fit. u also need a new adapter so the top oil feed can screw into the turbo....i think some of the tuners may be able to help here. you also need to drill holes into the compressor housing and attach the actuator bracket there. then cover the dump valve hole making sure the inside hole cant leak to the outside hole!!! |

Subject: boosting Question: In car standard gauge reads halfway up the scale but added aftermarket gauge and it reads 12psi both are taken from carb top. When running 18psi it jus nudged into the red.Which is reading rite?Should i block the standard feed if the added gauge is rite or c why the incar gauge not working properly? CHEERS sorry 4 the long winded message Answer: the standard gauge is probably well worn, and is probably wrong!- take the newer gauge as the truer reading. you may have a leak in the standard gauge pipework anyway...best check before writing it off. |

Subject: cup mod Question: sorry to be a pain but just changed a version of the cup mod(there are a few) to the proper cup mod.Carb top outlets linked together bottom of carb to turbo.Have a bleed valve fitted, boost gauge carb top reading went from 12 to 15psi is that rite?.Want to know if this is safe, have a gtt group a carb front mount inter cooler etc. What is the safe max boost on the propper cup mod?or should i just swap it back? Think i have jus killed my standard turbo(started shriking on full boost) :0( waiting for my T25 to be fixed from oil leaking problem :0( cheers Answer: 15psi is safe on standard carb. if u have a grp 'a' one then u should be able to run more. the cup mod, doesnt alter the amount of boost the carb and engine sees, it just tidied the engine bay up, and alters slightly the speed at which the actuator reacts to boost. get the bigger turbo on there and enjoy! |

Subject: Handling Dynamics? Question: Hi Wiz, My car is lowered with Koni shocks and boge 35mil springs up front, the rear is lower than the front by quite a bit is this affecting handling badley as it feels quite understeery also sometimes squirms around when leaving breaking that little late into corners. Do you think that turning the back up a bit would balance it out? it has standard alloys with 4 matching uniroyals and a strut brace so should be pretty good. what do you think or should I stop reading EVO?? Answer: it sounds suspiciously like you need to alter the brake bias valve at the back. if u lower it, u do need to adjust the load sensor, so u get normal braking again. see whether that helps first of all. |

Subject: Dump valve Question: Is it normal for the dv to leak oil? it doesnt drip, there is residue around the piston holes! Answer: hmmmm, its coming from the turbo dude! well actually that aint strictly true, u need to run the oil breather filter mod to stop oil vapour being fed back into the turbo..i bet this will sort alot of that out. if it dont then yer turbo could be on its way out. |
