Subject: Sortin carb out

Question:
Referrin 2 my last question u sed it wud b a gud idea 2 geta uprated fuel pump wen i turn up d boost.
U also sed i shud sort my carb out, ive alredy put ina larger main jet! Wot ova tingz shud i do 2 it or shud i geta uprated 1?

Answer:
first of all my friend, u havent told me what boost you are thinking of running. secondly, how much £££ are you thinking of spending? the uprated fuel pump is a good idea just generally, and if ur a cheapskate pull one off a E30 bmw.
a larger main jet and other jet tweeks can see you up to around 20-23psi without too much trouble. but then of course u gotta strap yer intercooler else it'll pop!

Subject: Main Wiring Harness

Question:
Can you just change the black connector behind the headlight?
(if so how do I do it?????)

please dont tel me im gona have to completely replace all those blody wires!!!

Electrics baffle me!!!

thanks

Marcus

Answer:
you are going to have to buy a large multiplug connector from say RS or maplin or someone....count the wires going in first on the old one!- the chop the old connector off and squeeze the new metal ends onto the wires and push them into the new connector block. then repeat with the wires on the other side of the block. if u do it right it wont look tooo bad. the remember to vaseline up the outside of the connector and wrap it up so no more water gets in it!!!

Subject: what fuel?

Question:
what fuel do i put in an original non modded r5 phase 1 turbo i ve been told four star, and four star and unleaded HELP!! cheers

Answer:
the cars were originally meant to run on 4 star or even 5 star!!!
but as you got VERY limited supplies of 4 star now, then super unleaded/ultimate/optimax all work well instead. you could also run 95RON normal unleaded if you were realy stuck, but it doesnt give the best performance.
dont worry about valve seat wear or anything like that, as allegedly turbo cars have strengthened valve seats anyway.

Subject: strang flutter noise

Question:
fitted a bleed valve and boost gauge but now there is a fluttering noise ( im running it at 15psi) when i lift the throttle and sounds like the dump valve is not working, as that was loud before.
PS.. I have taken the bleed valve out and still sounds the same, is it and turbo on it`s way out?
It is still boosting at 15 psi with no smoke

Answer:
sounds like the dump valve diaphragm has split, or you have a leak in the vacuum pipe to the ecu. check both! and let me know the score smile

Subject: bleed valve

Question:
I got a bleed valve fitted to my 5, and i dnt kno wot it does. sum one said it might adjust the boost?? and if it does which was will lower the boost do you need to wind it in or out?

cheers

Answer:
the bleed valve does increase boost, by unscrewing it...i.e turning it to the left gives you more power. turning it to the right screw it in and returns you to original boost.
BUT!!!
if you have a standard carburettor you will not be able to run more than 15psi safetly. this is approximately 1/2 way into the hatched area on the standard incar boost gauge.
if you do turn it up more than 15psi, you are liable to blow the headgasket due to under fueling.
when u wanna do more to it feel free to ask smile

Question:
yes it is a split dump valve diaphragm thanks a lot for that

Answer:
no problemo!
btw...u can get a free diaphragm from forge motorsport, if u have a forge dump valve, and tell them its split, they'll send u two in the post.

Subject: Induction kits

Question:
What are the best induction kits avalible with a good cold air feed?

Answer:
define 'best'... best looking id say quiksilver, best airflow - who knows.
one with best cold air feed? i thought one or two had some heat shield that came with them, or u could buy seperately.
failing that the best bet is to make your own cold air feeds...

or you could even stick with the original airbox and but a performance replacement filter in that, as people recon thats good too.

basically there is no definate answer.

Subject: keeping her cool

Question:
I want to uprate my rad/intercooler and get a low temp fan and ther, i want the car to be at about 180bhp eventually!! please could u recomend any curtain types/sizes which would be man enough for the job. My limit is about £400, cheers mate.

Answer:
a new standard rad will be a good 'upgrade' for the rad u have now. if u really want to buy a copper core rad then be my guest, buy it aint really that uprated....they are all about £100 or less.
the low temp fan switch is a very good buy, that costs less than £20.
as for the intercooler, best off with a slightly larger standard positioned one, otherwise you will have to fork out extra dough for new pipework etc etc. forge or pace do nice ones.
you'll easily spend less than £400.

Subject: Liner protrusion

Question:
Howdy!

Despite having the Haynes manual i just wanted to ask you how important you think liner protrusion is? Does it need to be dti accurate or what? There is about 0.01mm difference between some areas on my block/liners.

Also if a liner seal had been broken water would enter the oil not vice versa wouldn't it?

Thanks v much

Answer:
water would enter the oil if there was a knwckered liner seal.
the liner seals come in set sizes. if u wanna be really picky u should arrange the liners so the highest sits at one end and they step down gradually to the lowest at the other. there aint anything u can do about it, as the liner seals compress cos they are rubber.

Subject: Breather system/compression results?

Question:
My breather system is chucking oil out(approx 100ml per 10 miles)!! It's filling the catch tank rapidly which it's never done before.
Compression test results were 119 130 130 130 from 1 to 4. It's running a low comp head from renault, do you think these results indicates a worn ring? The engine was rebuilt about 20k ago.
I stripped all breather hoses and saw that it's puffing out of the rocker cover very badly even at idle, which also reaks of fuel!!
Could there be another reason? As my rocker shaft is VERY noisy even after correct adjustment, the header tank is also pressurising and manifold is gasket is blowing!!
Cheer in advance once again Spark!!

Answer:
fill piston 1 up with a little bit of engine oil, so that it sits on the rings and not on the valves..i.e dribble it in...then repeat the compression test.
if the compression raises up to 130 then the rings could be knackered. if it dont then there is summat up with one of the valves.
the noisy rocker could be a few things, like lack of lubrication, or summat orrible happning to the followers....like what happened to mine for instance...they wore out!!!!
the header tank should pressurise within reason....and just fix the manifold gasket yerself...this will make the engine bay smell fuelly!!!
try cleaning out the breather pipe to the sump too, this may be blocked...

Subject: Standard bhp

Question:
Is it possible that a renault 5 that is completely standard could run at 130bhp cause my mate reckons every 5 gt turbo phase 2 runs at 115 and that none of the 5s will run any quicker when they were first bought,he says that they were all 115 bhp and no more when i believe a few could possibly be more powerful.

Answer:
phase 1 gt turbos were 115bhp (85-87) .phase 2 gt turbos were 120bhp (87 onwards).
phase 1's were 0-60 in 7.1secs
phase 2's were 0-60 in 7.3secs.

so with less power the ph1's were quicker, cos they were and still are better than the phase 2's *lol*

Subject: Perc Fan.

Question:
Sir Wizard, sorry to repeat questions already asked.... I changed my starter motor the other day. When re-connecting the battery the perc fan started and didn't stop. I disconnected the fan and consulted previous wizzy questions. Taking your advice, I disconnected the temp sensor over the turbo, then disconnected the sensor on the carb, then disconnected the relay. The damn perc fan was still going!!! I am pretty cr@p at electrics, so please help.

Answer:
the wires that goto the two senders are obviously touching together to complete the circuit, trace them back to the front of the car, checking to see that they aint melted together.

Subject: Carb Hoses.

Question:
Mr Wizard, a few cars in the gallery have engine pictures with a load of the hoses either side of the carburetor removed. I had heard that these are removable due to over-engineering. Is this true? Which hoses can be removed? Is there any knock on effect work that needs to happen too? Everyone wants a tidier engine bay! Cheers. Hezza

its called the 'cup mod', check past questions to get the answers.

Subject: boost gauge?

Question:
Another silly question im afraid. i bought my r5 with a in car boost already there. i am in the middle of respraying the whole car at the mo, but wondered when it came to stickin the bugger back together, whats the easiest way to measure where the dial in the car should be set to.

Sorry but please have patience with the novice who is keen to learn.

Answer:
the incar boost should be shut off first, then as you drive open it up until the boost reads halfway into the red hatched region. thats assuming you have a standard carb.

Subject: clicking noise and no start

Question:
Hi,

I have had a couple of attempts to start up the 5 and i have got it started yet of recent i cant! all i get its a very rappid ticking and the car really struggles! the clicking is really fast and close together? could it be the battery?

cheers

Answer:
sounds like the fuel pump relay. or summat todo with the immobiliser/alarm. try disconnecting the battery and leaving it for 10 mins. if this not work then try to short the fuel pump relay so the pump comes on as soon as u turn the ign key on. this may be the problem.
