Subject: engine went bang

Question:
Where can i get a recon/second hand engine from at a cheap price as im on a tight budjet

Answer:
why dont you recon your own engine, or just check the classifieds regularly. maybe check ebay, an engine pops up on their at least once every fortnight.
there are a few factors here.- it depends on what u call a 'cheap' engine. and it sounds like u want to just put the new engine straight in your car.....the question u gotta ask yerself is, why is an engine been taken out of the car, and am i getting what i pay for!!!

Subject: Cutting out

Question:
Hi Wizard

My car is cutting out sometimes when I pull up to junctions and roundabouts. It only seems to happen at night when my lights are on.

When the car is ticking over and you turn the lights on you can see the revs drop slightly then go back up again and then drop again and so on, but in the day its fine.

What should a check first?

Cheers

Answer:
set your revs alittle higher, via the idle screw on the carb. check the outputs of the alt and batt though, just see u aint got any current drain from a short or summat!

Subject: HELP

Question:
Ive been looking for the right turbo for a while now and just carnt decide which one to get maybe u could advise me on a good turbo. i was thinking of a t3 rollerbearing or something like that but ive been told there not very reliable can u advise me on a LOW lag turbo with good power im thinking of running 22psi to 25max good 215bhp.
any good websites u know??
not really got a budget!!!

Answer:
i had a t3/t25 (god knows what it was) rollerbearing turbo and it didnt spin up to nearly 4k. maybe it was just too big. if i were going to get a low lag turbo, money no cost then, id try and go for a t25 rollerbearing. i think they are available, but whether you can get them to fit a 5 is another matter. failing that get a large t25/t2, with decent intercooling and you should be ok. if you need more power then you are gonna have to sacrifice the lag issue, and go t28.

Subject: Cutting out

Question:
Hello again wizard

Ive checked the batt and alt and they seem to be wired up ok. The problem is the fact I can't turn the screw on the carb up to increase the revs coz its already fully turned up and its only ticking over below 1000 revs and drops further when you turn the lights on.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Answer:
you need to turn the mixture screw out to richen it up. then as the revs rise, turn the idle screw back in. this will probably sort your problems out.

Subject: OVERHEATING

Question:
hello mate, cheers for you advice so far!

Finally got my car going after about 6 months. The head gasket went cos it overheated really badly. I had already changed the water pump as it was leaking so thought that was why it was overheating. Still overhtd so flushed out the radiator thought it may have been blocked. Anyway its still overheating almost instantly. Is the system blocked or what???

Thanks

Answer:
sounds like u aint bled the water system properly. did u blow into the header tank and open the two bleed nipples until nothing but water came out? failing this suspect that your water temp sensor maybe playing up, or, that u cracked a liner and not noticed!- is it steaming alot out the back?

Subject: crank

Question:
i got a new block the other day, tonight i fitted my crankshaft with brand new 0.25 bearings...put it all together and now the crankshaft won't spin freely by hand!

Is it normal that this happens with new bearings, or are they the wrong size?

Any suggestions?

Cheers,
Roderz

Answer:
i bet you've fitted the main caps or big end caps in the wrong order or the wrong way round.
the mains have numbers 1-5 on them... the big ends- if u mess these up, are nearly impossible to sort out!!!
get back to me on this one!!!

Subject: boosting

Question:
i recently fitted a KTR 180 hybrid turbo to my car and when it was fitted i had the actuator turned right down the boost was running abit more than standerd which made alot of difference but the last to nights iv used the car it was hardly boosting and could hardly hear it spining up where as before it was very loud and sounded like a jet engine. i tried adjusting the actuator but has made no difference there is also a bleed valve fitted under the bonnet this was fitted before i bought the car.

Answer:
you've probably split a hose. check all hoses first before worrying too much.

Subject: inlet elbow sealing ring

Question:
when i took my 5 for the carb 2 be re-done (it was pissing out petrol from the float chamber) the man notified me that there is no sealing ring between the inlet elbow and the carb and that this would decrease my performance....any idea where i could get one from or if any1 out there has one 2 spare....thanks

Answer:
im assuming that u have the flat metal plate that sits under the carb top and fits over the 3 bolts that hold the top onto it. if so, then all you need is a thermostat sealing ring off another car, such as a VW/audi. the thicker the better!- this does the job nicely.

Subject: Phs1/Phs2

Question:
Arite wizz,

could you tell me the difference between the Phs1 engine an the Ph2 engine?

cheers,
Ramsey.

Answer:
ph1's 'could' have baffled sump, also air cooled turbo if real early, also head is slightly different, gearbox different too.
besides that, they are the same, except the water system is really different.

Subject: Running In??

Question:
What is the correct way to run a modified turbo engine in? I've have been told loads of ways to do this including ragging the crap out of her & keepin the revs between 3,000 & 5,000 rpm for 1000 miles, My engines got a new turbo, cam, bottom end and head etc, Any ideas Mr Wiz?

Answer:
http://www.rtoc.org/wizard/question.asp?id=3898

in your case, take it nice and easy, and change the oil VERY regular, else you can kiss goodbye to the turbo!- problem is the act of running the engine in can cause swarf to appear, and this goes round the engine and kills the turbo.

Subject: White smoke everywhere!!!

Question:
Hi Wizard

I was driving my r5 today and pulled up at some traffic lights and clouds of white smoke started pouring out the exhausts and I couldn't see my mate in the car behind.

I had been running about 20psi, I thought it must be the turbo but I do have a T3 turbo. I took the intercooler to turbo pipe off expecting there to be fresh oil in the pipe but there wasn't.

Does this mean the turbos ok?

The car overheats as well since the white smoke started and doesn't pick up like it should. I didn't think it would overheat if it was the turbo.

It has a group A head gasket on it and steel liners.

What do you think it might be?

Cheers for any advice as I live on the Isle of Wight and there are no tuners over here to go to.

Answer:
take the turbo off
if there is oil in the exh manifold its the engine (thats asuming that the inlet side seal of the turbo hasnt gone)
if there is no oil in the exh manifold but there is oil in the down pipe its the turbo

Subject: driveshafts

Question:
When a driveshaft is knackered does it rumble when steering or do you think this rumble could be something else?

Answer:
the CV joint has probably run dry. this causes the bearing the run on metal to metal and hence knacker it. you could get away with regreasing it, but it may not help....

Subject: gt tuning gt-10 turbo

Question:
Hi wiz just wondering if you could help me i have the chance of this turbo which as just been reconditioned:

hear is what it say's on the web site:

Stage 2 GT10 MK2 (P073)
Uses a larger compressor wheel and matching cover. GT10 is our longest running turbo, more impressive than its price might suggest. Boost capability increased too. One customer has covered over 100,000 miles with this turbo!
£449 + VAT

For £250 and it had an 360 bearing fitted to it. Its a .48 compresor and it has a .35 exhaust housing i was just wondering if this will be any more eficent than a standard one and how do you think it could compare to a standard one, i wanting somthig to be able to handle 18ish psi (rolly says it can handle 20 but would it be efficent at that presure).
any help would be great.
cheers
chris

Answer:
who did the reconditioning of it, and has that person got a 'warranty' with it?- also has the turbo been run AT ALL since it was recon'd, as it takes approx 1 sec without any oil to feck the turbo, if u dont fit it properly!!! so it could of been run for 1mile or less, which could mean it seems ok, whereas it could be funked!
just Q's u need to ask smile

Subject: Oil return pipe

Question:
Just wondering if you could help me.
I've nearly finished doing up my car, but the problem is that Ive come across a split oil return pipe. I'ts the top one out of the two rubber one's. the one that fits onto the turbo itself. I've been to my nearest Renault dealer, but they can't get hold of it. They have allready got two in, but both have been the wrong one's. Can you please help as I'm desparate to get the car back on the road. Thanks

Answer:
best off trying to use a pipe off another car. i use a water pipe on this and it lasts as long as the normal oil pipe does. i think its GSF part number 17979, which u then cut inhalf, and make two!!! basically its a golf mk1 water hose. if these dont fit then, get a tube from samco or summat. you should make a note of the dimensions you need smile

Subject: checking over

Question:
hi, I am going to look at a 5gt that has been in storage for the last 3 years, what should I pay special attention to considering the car has not moved for 3 years and will there be any typical problems from a gt that has been standing for 3years?

Answer:
fuel will have gone off, so it probably wont run 100%. water needs changing, as does oil, and also brake fluid could of absorbed alot of water.....and makes the brakes spongy. the discs will probaby be rusty, they may need replacing. check for rust on rear arches, around where the bumper fits on.
basically, if u wanna try and start it, turn the car over, with the kinglead disconnected, as this could let oil circulate round the engine, before u start it!!!- and stop u fecking the turbo thats on there!

Subject: Heater

Question:
The interior temperature knob, for the hot/cold air does not seem to work. I can have it on hot or cold and hot air still comes in the car. Any ideas??

Answer:
sounds like you flap that covers up the heater matrix has come adrift. take the mini control panel, that has the hot/cold knob in it out, and check to see if the control wire is still attched to the back of the knob mechanism. if it aint then you need to check the other end of the wire is attached to the flap mechanism. they are held inplace by some dodgy clips...very similar to the one that holds the choke cable onto the back of the carburettor!
hope this helps!

Subject: low comp pistons (boost and fuel)

Question:
hi, i have recently bought sum low comp pistons, i ws wonderin what would be a ""safe"" boost level on them with a few uprated goodies such as hed gasket and chargecooler????? also what carb jet will i need and also would running it rich be a good way to keep my pride and joy safe????

cheers wiz

Answer:
safe boost level depends on what carb mods you have done. running rich may cool the piston tops down nicely, but as you have low comp ones, id say you probably wouldnt need to do that. best way is to go for water injection if you are gonna run over about 23psi.
the carb jets probably need to be air corrector-100, main-130, 1st stage enricher-120 on a standard venturi that'd be plenty for 20psi....if it overfuels then drop the 1st stage enricher back to 100.

Subject: TDC lead

Question:
Hello, further to my question ther other day about car not starting. Ive taken the TDC lead off and it looks ok but duno what im lookin for really.

I spilt a lot of water out of the expansion tank which went on the the electrical conecter thing below it next to the head light. i had a look at that and some of the connections on that look correded. Could it be anything to do with that????
or can you just not tell by looking that the TDC leads knakered??
Thanks

Marcus

Answer:
the tdc leads always get burned, by the turbo and manifold....check for melted wires.
the main wiring harness that you've so kindly covered with water could have summat to do with the car not starting!!!! best check continuity across the plug, and clean the connections accordingly!

Subject: black smoke/fouled plugs!

Question:
Developed a miss which developed over a few days until the car wouldn't run/start.
Changed the ecu/leads/tdc lead/dizzy and cap to no avail.
Changed the plugs and it started immediatly but began missing after 20 seconds. It's now hunting badly at idle and sounds like its runnin on about 2 cylinders. Its puffing out black smoke, wont drive and soots the plugs up badly.
Cant work out if its under sparkin or over fueling?? I'm guessing over fueling so should i just change the carb first(pikey mods). What else could it be?
Cheers!! Again!!

Answer:
take carb apart and clean everything. make special note to check the idle screw gaskets and generally just gaskets, gaskets, gaskets!!!!
also make sure jets aint blocked. this sounds a quite likely cause of over fueling at idle.

Subject: rear arches: do they need cutting?

Question:
hi, i am trying oto make my r5 campus prima into a gtt replica but i have come across a problem which i hope you can find away around....... after taking off all the plasic rubbish on the sides and finding metal mushroom things sticking out of the sides i then focused on my rear arches which arent curved under the plastic. i phoned dawsons and asked if they could fit my arches as i dont feel comfortable drilling holes in my car and they said that the rear arches are a problem and would need trimming they said the job will cost about £1000 if i had that sort of money i would be driving a turbo to begin with!
and also what should the mounting screws on the backside of the arches look like? because mine are missing the screws and the plastic threads in the holes are chewed.

please help

john boakes

Answer:
the arches on the gtt are really high, and come up to a few cm short of the top of the kit. the mounting screws look like mini-studs, with one half screwed into the kit, and the other half going thru the body and being bolted in place.
i think you'll find alot of body shops dont bother screwing them back on, i think they bond the kits back on with the same stuff they stick sunroofs in with...i.e Sikaflex!!!
