Subject: Identifying a hybrid turbo

Question:
When i bought my car the previous owner said it had a hybrid turbo, is there any way of finding out if it has a hybrid turbo without removing the turbo? thanks

Answer:
no, you are gonna have to remove it, unless u can see the metal tag on the core. this should tell u who made it and rebuild number.

Subject: cracked block?

Question:
I took my rocker cover to discover a white mayonaise type slime inside.
Water is obiously getting into my oil somehow.
Question is - where is the water getting in. I just replaced the head gasget so thats not blown. Can you think of somewhere else it might be getting in. Would it be getting past one of the piston liners (as I replaced one recently).
What shall I do to solve this problem other than replacing the engine.

Answer:
is oil getting into the water too? - is the header tank getting very pressurised. still could be headgasket, unless u sure you know why it went in the first place?- too much boost perhaps? *lol*
if water just getting into oil then could be cracked liner seal, in which case its a matter of head off and sump off! try pressurising the water system with a tester, and see how much you lose. also undo sump plug and see if oil comes out first.
you will most likely not need a new engine, just alot of patience, and some time.

Subject: Alternator

Question:
hi, would a 1.7 monaco alternator and starter motor fit and work on a gtturbo phase2?

Answer:
the starter would fit if you move the dowl into the middle hole

dont think the alt will fit as the pullys are very different

5gtt has V belt . and 1.7 has flat belt

Subject: cooling

Question:
Hi wiz,
my fanbelt snapped the other day and i heard it go with music on! I fitted a new one and everything was fine for 30mins til the temp went sky high (over 2/3s) and fan didn't cut in. I've just had new rad, stat, flush etc about a month ago.Any ideas?
thanks Wizza

Answer:
check to see if the fan belt hasnt cut any of yer pipes around the water pump area. could be leaking and letting air in. also could of knackered wiring that controls the fan. bridge the fan switch in the rad first to see if its knackered. if that not work change the relay infront of the alternator, that powers the fan. if they are ok, also suspect a headgasket problem *lol*
then get back to me :-)

Subject: gearbox oil!!!

Question:
hey wiz, i know this makes me look like a twat but ive just put my new engine in and i need to know how u fill the gearbox up wiv oil!! is it through the little tube in the top wiv the bung in it??

Answer:

halfway down the front of the gearbox, there is either a very large nut, or a plastic unscrewable cover thingy. undo, and fill from there.

Question I previously asked:

__________________________________________________________________

I havent recognised any oil in the water, but the header tank gets slightly presurised after using the engine. When I bought the car the guy said it had a cracked liner (I predict from the water freezing). So I took off the head and wedged out the liner and replaced it. I later discovered that when you replace the liner you must also put a rubber O ring seal on.
Could this be the problem? Or could there be another crack in the block from freezing?
Also just Wanted to asked why the sump would have to come off to fit a new liner seal.
Thanks for your advise wizard man.

Answer:
yes, u DEFINATELY need the liner seal!!!- looks like a thin rubber band, and fitting it will stop all yer problems.
to get your liner out means popping the piston out of the liner. sooo, how are you going to get a piston ring compressor on the piston and knock the liner back in, and then remove the piston ring compressor? the only way is to remove the sump, undo the big end, lift the piston/liner combo out, and put the seal on. hence u not have to seperate the piston and liner.
hope this helps dude. may the force be with you!

Subject: t3 actuator

Question:
hi wiz...just fitted a t3 actuator on my car single port so i had to do the cup mod...ive got a in car bleed valve ...now with the t3 on my car the boost goes over 25 psi and my cars not built for that yet ...is there any way of lowing the boost...the in car one is switch right off and the t3 is just holding the waste gate shut but it still boosts over 25 psi...before i put the t3 on it was about 16psi with the bleed valve shut..please help...thanks

Answer:
lengthen the actuator arm, by unscrewing the 'end' that attaches to the wastegate, this reduces boost.

Subject: RELAY FOR FUEL PUMP

Question:
Can you help me i need to know what the wires are that go to this relay coz i burnt my feckin ones out a black one earthed out and alot of smoke came through the vents.I also noticed that there were only 5 wires attached and not six mmmmmmm interesting. Please help me.

Answer:
well, electrics aint my thing really, but when things short out, its usually the earth (black) that gets it in the neck. there are only 5 wires that goto the relay, but if u mess around with a little piece of wires, you should find that u can bypass the relay and have the fuel pump turn on as soon as the ignition turns the dash lights on. - very dodgy in a crash though, and if u have an alarm/immobiliser u may find u can turn the car off and it still runs!- even remove the key!

Subject: t3 actuator part 2

Question:
if i lenthen the arm any more the waste gate will be flaping about.....

Answer:
ok, maybe the problem is that you got too stronger spring in the t3 actuator, as they do several types? -31 /-34 etc etc. i think you also need a t3 or t25 turbo really (i cant remember what u got.)have you tried a pipe straight from the carb top to the actuator, to see what the lowest possible 'base' boost is?

Subject: Flippin Gearbox!

Question:
Hi,

Ive got me car in the garage as the gearbox was knackered! The garage has just called and reckons that they can only get 1st, 2nd & Reverse with the selector! They havent put the car back together yet!

I spoke to the chap i got the box off and he swears blind it was fine 4 months ago when he took it out of the car! He will also refund money if i want he is that confident.

The question is will the box just need to be moving (and full of oil) to get the other gears as its been sat for a while?

Cheers
Simon

Answer:
yes, try filling it with oil, and get the internals lubed up. i fitted a recon box once and it seemed like it was fecked...until i filled with oil and let the gears get coated!!! just hope this is a similar situation!

Answer:
check the leads to the back of the starter motor, as this is the direct live feed from the alternator to the battery. then check the earth leads from both alt and batt connect straight to bodywork and aint corroded!!!

Subject: R19 16V brake calipers

Question:
G'day there Wizard, i'm getting a 285mm big brake conversion and was wondering about the calipers. I'm getting new ones but i'm not sure if it would be better for me to get R19 16V calipers instead of the original turbo ones. Would the R19 calipers benefit me and want they work with the 285mm discs? Cheers

Answer:
everyone i know uses the gtturbo ones with spacers. you may find that the r19 ones are very similar to the gtturbo ones anyway.- i may be wrong here, but its worth checking.

Subject: fuel relay loctaion

Question:
yo wiz, got a prob with fuel pump. f reg 5. cannont find the fuel relay, i found the aux one behind the back seat pannel. butive hunted and serched and cant find the main one. its not any were near the fuse box, however there is one bright orange one right at the back that i dont know what it does, could this be it even tho its different to the aux, which it a big black box? the other thing is i dont seem to have the fuel regulator under the engine, the two of them have just gone walking, any ideas? thanks matey.

kendo

Answer:
fuel pressure regulator....follow the shock tower (drivers side) down. - its at the bottom of there. actually better to jack drivers side of car up and have a sniff underneath....easier to see then.

fuel pump relay. take the cover off the passenger side footwell, the bit that covers the fuses...held on by two bolts. on the right of the fuse box is the RELAY BANK. hanging off the TOP RIGHT hand corner of the relay bank..usually pointing upwards is the fuel pump relay. grey clip/ black body, 6 pin.

good luck!

Subject: not boosting

Question:
my 5 seems to have lost boost. I have tried taking the front actuator pipe of then drivin it an still nothing. Have checked all hoses an pipes for splits and they all seem ok. Intercooler has no leaks either. I have also looked at the turbo and it spins freely with no movement up or down. I cant understand what it could be. Any help would be much appreciated. cheers.

Answer:
try taking the turbo to intercooler pipe off. start the car, and put hand over turbo boost outlet. then rev the car, your hand should be blown off!!! how have u checked the intercooler?- have you filled it with white spirit/ petrol, shaken it - whilst sealing inlet and outlet, and then checked the seams?- the petrol soon finds cracks!!! - also cleans out oil deposits too smile
check the overboost sensor, where it joins the pipe. this can pop out relatively easily.
then you gotta look at dumpvalve leakage, maybe a weak spring. or even the strange solenoid on the bulk head is stuck open, hence letting boost out...clamp pipe to it with mole grips, and test!!!!
then suspect that the carb top aint on correctly. or even the manifold aint attached properly.
then suspect that the actuator bracket has parted company with the turbo compressor housing, hence you will get no boost, as the wastgate aint bein held shut.

its a big subject, but i hope this lot helps!

Subject: smoke from exhaust

Question:
Hi Wiz. What is it when I drive hard, boost on 10psi. Then slow and stop I get white blue smoke coming out from my ehaust, and it smells of burning oil????
It has only started doing this after i fitted a side exhaust(sidewinder) (slighty bigger bore).

It seams like it has something to do with the turbo. The oil may be seeping out of the oil gallary????

If I take the downpipe off would I be able to see/find any qlues to what the hell is going on.

Thanks

Answer:
first of all change the breather systam. remove the pipe that feeds into the turbo 'U' shaped pipe (telephone hose) block the hole and then fit a small KN filter on the end of it. this stops oil vapour being fed into the boost system, and could be the problem. then check the turbo shaft play....in-out is a favourite for oil burnage. alot of up down movement also means totalled turbo too.
leave the exhaust alone for the time being.

Subject: Cold = Breakdowns

Question:
During all the cold and rainy weather my 5 broke down EVERYDAY!
i would get 5 minutes down the motorway b4 it would kick out black smoke and cut all power.
i would sit on the hard shoulder trying to keep the revs up then after another 5 mins i would drive off and have no problems 4 the rest of the day.
At the same tiime as this i was having problems with the dump valve having a delay. the waste gate would chatter b4 the dump valve would sound.
The turbo does not smoke at any other time and the car runs fine other than this.
The car has been off the road for a few months and wont be driven until its sorted. Thanks in advance

Answer:
Sounds like you have an ignition problem which is clearing once there is enough heat in the system.

Try removing and cleaning all the plugs, leads, rotor arm, dizzy cap etc and spray them with a water proofer after reassembly.

Subject: Liners again!

Question:
Hi Wiz,
In the process of rebuilding an engine for the first time. Fairly heavy going smile

I've just got hold of all the bits I need to replace and am ready to get it back together. Before I do I wanted to get your opinion re. replacing the liners.

The liner on the gearbox side (no1?) is cracked. I've bought a replacement, but now I'm thinking maybe I should replace the lot. The engine looks in very good nick and it's obviously been well looked after so is it necessary...what say you?

Thing is I bought new piston rings & liner seals, but I heard on the vine of grapes that if you replace the rings you should really replace the liners too. The car's pretty heavily modified so I really want to do this right!

There is no wear ring at the top of any of the liners. The only thing that looks like it might be a problem is that they are pretty shiny and might need 'de-glazing' (??), which I gather is pretty straightforward.

Cheers in advance.
Jon big grin

Answer:
If you really want to do it right then replace the lot but if they are in as good condition as you say then you could get away with just the one.

I would say, get them deglazed with a honing tool, replace the rings and liner seals and rebuild it.

Make sure you run it in again after as the new rings will need to bed in.

Subject: Turbo Bouncing

Question:
Hi Wizard,
I have a 1.4 8v Turbo. I have been having some problems with the turbo, as it boosts up to 18 psi, it starts to bounds back and forth from 18 to 14psi and gradually stabilizes back to 18psi. I just don’t understand what it could be??

Just in case, the Turbo is a IHI BF-24

Answer:
It could be down to a weak actuator spring or actuator pipework expanding and then normalising.
