Subject: 285mm brake conversion for my CGTT

Question:
I'm considering a 285mm conversion for my Clio. I currently have R19 16v calipers, discs and pads up front.

Now, I've got a mate who can get me discs and pads for next to nothing. I thought that it would be Laguna discs which would fit, but from what I can see the biggest 4 stud discs are 262mm and the 5 stud are 280mm. Obviously the 5 stud won't fit.

So, what car should I be looking at nabbing the discs from?

Also where can I get a caliper extender bracket?

Thanks! smile

Answer:
you'll have to get the caliper extenders made, from a fabricaters.
i thought the laguna diesel discs were the correct size?

Subject: pinking

Question:
I've got a mate to drive my motor and he said it sounds just like his charade when that was pinking so starting to get worried as its only running 9 psi!!!!! Do i need to retard the ignition? if so how? i'm a newbie to the unreliable car game lol
Cheers Wizza.

Answer:
just cos yer mate says it sounds shite, do not worry, cos ur car aint a feckin charade 3 pot engine jobbie! if u are really worried take it to a rolling round and get it checked. get it to a proper mechanic and let him listen, more likely to be a rattling chain or even a rattling exhaust.

Subject: What

Question:
Hiya Wizard,

Just wondering what sort of differences there is between the Re208 and the Re209.

Is there a higher rev range???
More Power???
Differnt Power Band???

Cheers Wizard I know I can rely on ya.

Answer:
'the master' usually has all this sort of info rattling round his head.
but ill give it a go.
RE208 has an adjustable allen key in the UFO shaped vaccum capsule, this apparently adjusts the advance and retard of the unit....but i wouldnt really wanna mess with it!!! the RE208 also has 500rpm less than the RE209, which is odd cos ive had both off the clock to around 8k+ revs with both units, with a modded engine....*lol*
on a recent roling road session i did get slightly more bhp with my RE208, but this could of been fluke. i think the maps are very similar though.

Subject: wiring/pin-out of anti-perc relay

Question:
""to the master of knowledge from ye of little faith""

Hi ive just joined and already i have a question that needs answering.

I bought a R5 GTT as a non runner and had to build the whole front loom from scratch...car runs fine but my anti-perc fan stays on, i thin that the relay may be jammed from the previous damage to the loom. but on the other hand i might have wired the relay incorrectly. The haynes manual wiring diagram is sh*te, so could you please help me without telling me to get a diagram from renault. (every renault place ive called dont have any) good eh? well hope u can help....just the pin-out will b fine Thanx.

P.S. my oil pressure guage and warning light dont work either again i think it might b a wiring problem (followed haynes manual for that 1...lol) any help on that too?....thanx

Answer:
""from the master of some, to the idea of none""
id check to see if one of yer two switches for the perc fan arent stuck shut first. 1st is under the carb base, this is connected in parallel to the one over the top of the turbo (usually burnt out). disconnect these one at a time to see if the perc fan stops. i think the perc fan relay is one of the ones next to the unit itself.

oil pressure warning light/ oil pressure gauge, check fuses.- then check wiring is correct to the two units located at the front of the block. if the plug has come off the depth level sensor and been spade connector'd then it will look very similar to the oil pressure connectors, i think they are a similar colour too!
check all round there for breaks in wire, and also suspect the death connector located under the water bottle/ expansion tank, as this likes to corrode!!!- take apart and clean it!!!! this will sure alot of problems!!!

hope this helps, i hate electrics!

Subject: clutch cable

Question:
ive got a groupn clutch fitted and i kep snappin my clutch cable. wot a joke.
any one kno if theres a stronger cable or and way of adjusting it so its not so tight!

Answer:
i think you'll find its the way its being routed to the clutch pedal. it should GO BEHIND the rear engine mount...there are actually two clips there to hold it. the loop gently round into the bulkhead. also check yer pedal top to see if the plastic quadrant is white or black, as the white one is the newer revision!!!
i also hope ur using renault cables, and not some shonky aftermarket versions.

Subject: Fitting boost gauge

Question:
Could you please explain, how you fit a boost gauge. Thanks

Answer:
there are several ways that a boost gauge can be fitted

first and formost is find a place that you would like it to be fitted inside the car .. so that it can be seen eaisy

as for the piping
it depends on were you would like the boost to be measured from

three main places are
1: nearest the turbo
2: above the carb
3: in the manifold

so all you need to do is work out were you would like the boost to be measured and work out how to fit the pipe so you can measure the boost at the point you have chosen

Its not lowered and how do i tell if its two lefts or rights?

Answer:
same as if u look at yer hands...have u got two lefts or two rights? *lol*
the struts should tilt backwards slightly. so the top nut should be slightly behind the hole in the shock tower.
if u take both struts off, and put them next to each other they should be mirror images!
do u follow?

Subject: Rear Engine

Question:
I am in the process of fitting a front subframe to the rear of a renault 5 I have. I need to step the hubs out by about 2"" so the struts clear the chasis rails.

Do renault 11 turbo's have wider bottom wishbones to give a wider track that would fit the 5 subframe? I am thinking about just extending the standard ones at the moment?

cheers

Answer:
try the r19 wishbones and driveshafts.... good enuff for the williams clio.....

Subject: Lowering on 15

Question:
Ive recently tried lowering my 5! I had some 50mm drop bb tuning springs put on the front and wanted to drop the back end about the same. Unfortunately the pasenger side torsion bar is rusted in and is impossible to remove. So I have only been able to adjust the drivers side about 25mm. The car looks awful from certain angles, so I have decided that the only way to resolve this is to purchase and fit a different rear beam. Im wondering how far I can drop the rear end on 15's with 195x45 tyres and still get people in the back. Am I gunna have to get the arches rolled?

Answer:
depends on the tyre side wall, some are square, some are rounded... i would doubt you'd have to get da arches rolled....

to see if u need any work doing..... get the torsion bar on the one side the same as the other...i.e normal height.... then loosen off bolts to rear beam. remove the two that are closest to the front of the car..then loosen the back two....so the beam is still attached to the car. then get some LARGE washers, and put them in the gap between the chassis and the trailing arm, then put the front bolts thru. tighten all bolts back up, and u should now have a lowered car, as you've just stuck washers in there and tilted the wheels upwards..... obviously it aint the best solution, some may think its very dangerous...so id advise this to check tyre catching-ness. etc etc.
i ran around in a car like for a long while wink

Subject: Front brake balance

Question:
Hi Wiz.

Just had my 5 fail its MOT on the front brake balance been out,how can this be adjusted/corrected?

I've got 285mm disk running EBC pads which are both under 6months old. I have noticed though the front o/s squeeks while driving, but when braking goes quite.

The pedal feels fine and braking is alot better over the standard discs.

Thanks Asa

Answer:
how do u mean front brake balance?
if u got a squeek whilst driving then surely that means that its sticking on.....so when you do brake that side of the car will start brakin first, hence uneven braking?
id take the caliper off and thoroughly clean the sliders, grease all the stuff u need to grease, and maybe even bleed both sides, just to make sure air aint in the system!
hope this helps!

Subject: Misfire after cold start!

Question:
Hi Wiz. Car starts first time from cold, but when i touch the accelerator it sounds as if the car has a slight misfire/engine seems like it does not rev smoothly. Any ideas please?

Answer:
ahhh, wee willy winka, drove thru the town, upstairs downstairs, in his dressing gown??? hmmmm, maybe not.
ok, the carb is cold when u first start it, so the fuel/air mix aint really got chance to mix properly, and probably wets yer plugs alittle, sooooo... maybe check yer plug gaps, and also yer dizzy cap. also maybe adjust yer mixture screwabit, to lean it off?- screw it in a bit.
