Subject: reverse gear Question: ello Wizza, since this morning I cant select reverse gear, all other gears work fine but for some reason when I lift up and try to engage reverse it wont budge! I need help as soon as poss cos me cars left at work Answer: try this technique. in neutral pull up the collar...then pull the gearstick over to the right hand side, still in neutral...so u could just put it in 5th if u pushed it forward.... then bang the lever across to the left hard and fast. do this twice very quickly. and slot the bugger into gear after the second time. ie. right-left-right-left-in! if this dont work you may have to adjust the gear linkage under the car- not good in this weather. or get a new gearbox :-( let me know if this works, as it works on my mowta :-) |

Subject: Stalling at idle, exhaust popping etc etc.... Question: Hi Wiz I've recently got my car back on the road after the engine was rebuilt and it has run fine for 300 miles till the other day. Went to B&Q, and on the way there the car was fine. When I set off back the car started cutting out every time I stopped, and would not idle at all. Once I was out on the dual carriageway it ran fine, apart from running really warm (until I turned the fan on myself). When I came off the dual carriageway I noticed the exhaust was popping as the revs dropped, and the car was still cutting out at junctions. When I got home I kept the engine running (with a bit of choke) and noticed that the fan isn't cutting in by itself either. Please help I'm at my whits end!!! Answer: ok.... first of all check to see if yer water system is actually being slightly pressurised like it should!!! if there is no hiss after a run, then u got a leak.- id suggest looking very carefully at all da pipes dat goto the water pump, especially the one that links to the manifold!!! they do like to break there!- hence hot running , but the fan not cut in! the car not idling and back firing is telling me that either you have a serious leak in yer vacuum pipe to the ecu/dumpvalve area. this will cause desperately sh1t idle and cutting out. it also advances the spark to the ignition, so it can cause serious pinking, and even head gasket failure...this also can cause hot car probs!!! or... you have a leak in the manifold gasket....check visible manifold bolts for 'tightness'! if the car still cuts out, clean the idle screw in the carb, then take the base of the carb off, and clean that thoroughly, as sh1t gets in there, and blocks a very snall hole that is vital for idling! also check to see if the mixture screw rubber o-ring is ok! hope this all helps!!! |

Subject: t3 acutator Question: just brought a t3 acutator and was wandering the best way too plumb it in....and how much differants will i notice when i have got it on....thanks Answer: have u checked to see if your t3 actuator fits the t2 bracket thats attached to the turbo?- cos i bet loads of money that it don't! - in which case u may have to start drilling holes to get it to fit!!! you have to use the cup mod to fit the pipework to it. as for the difference....hmmm, i can't bleedin remember *lol* - its been so long ago! - i would imagine that the boost comes on stronger, as its a more heavy duty actuator, ie the t2 actuator leaks more as it approaches its boost limit, whereas the t3 don't. |

Subject: Turbo drain pipe Question: I am having trouble connecting the oil drain pipe to a standard tubo, Is there supposed to be a metal tube that screws in to the turbo, then connects to the oil drain hose, if there is do you know where i can get this piece, or do you know what thread/size the hole in the turbo is as I may be able to make something up out of a pipe fitting Thanks Answer: yeah there is a screw in pipe. there are two diameter outlets depends whether u have a phase 1 or phase 2 car. ph1 is alot thinner than ph2!!! could try on the classifieds or even asking a turbo reconditioner if they have any knocking around. |

Subject: raider Question: Can you tell me how many raiders there are in the club and are they hard to get as i was thinking of selling Answer: 59 members have a car classed as raider blue, according to the members 'car colour' section on the site. now i think you could probably add 10 for people who just put blue, or midnight blue as their colour, so i reckon its about 70 members out of approx 1000. so i think u can see that they are reasonably rare. |

Subject: in car boost Question: hi wiz i have got a in car boost control but dont know how too fit it ...mines got 3 out lets on it and ive looked at the files on here but they all tell you differant ways of doing it just wanted to know the best way of doing it ...plus i have a t3 actuator on my car aswell.....thanks Answer: best stick to the method that comes with the incar boost control instructions! this will probably mean: 1) pipe from actuator to left outlet of bleed valve. 2) right outlet of bleed valve to top of carb. 3) middle outlet of bleed valve to air, in the engine bay, as its a vent. |

Subject: Turbo oil feed Question: Turbo oil feed I’m trying to fit a second hand standard turbo back onto my car but am having trouble with the oil feed. The replacement turbo seems to have a slightly smaller diameter (thread) inlet than an original phase 2 oil feed. Is this a phase 1 turbo or from a Renault eleven? Does anyone know what size threads are used on these turbos And where can I get adaptors? cheers Answer: you may need to get a turbo recon supplier to send u some adapters. a hose manufactuerer shoudl be able to tell you what size thread it is.- maybe even help u find and adapter. without seeing it, i cannot tell what size thread it is, as there are several diffrent types!!! |

Subject: it just won Question: problem with it, it goes into gear very smooth from 1st to 4th but for some reason it just won't go into 5th any idea what it could be? thanks Wizard Answer: as has been said on the board.... you may need to adjust the gear linkage under the car...it does say how to do this in haynes manual. either that or your 5th gear is feckererererrerered!!!- which will probably mean a new box! |

Subject: ar numbers Question: hi wiz, just aquired another turbo for my 11. it has .42 on the compressor side and .36 on the erxhaust. how would this differ from my t2 which has .48 on the compressor side and i think .35 on the exhaust? cheers john Answer: It should spin up quicker due to the smaller exhaust housing but ultimately it will produce less power due to the smaller compressor and top end will be limited as well due to exhaust side size. |

Subject: pistons and liners round 2 Question: hi there me again, just on the last stages of building my engine bak up and im at the same problem again, ive found a company that will do me forged piston and don't charge the earth, but im struggling to find these steel liners? what are the difference between these and the stds? are'nt the std's steel? and one last question, whats better aqua mist or this halo nos that goes on the front of the front mounted intercooler? if i was to run both would it be to cold inside the engine ? sorry for all the questions but i wanna get it right b4 god of the pod. cheers Answer: standard liners are spun sintered cast iron (allegedly), they are not as tough as steel liners. the only place i know in this country that has them is EP motorsport, but i know people have got them from overseas b4 now. as for the second question... work it out. water injection reduces in-cylinder temperatures, the main consumable compound is virtually free...i.e water! the NOS system....cools the intercooler, but first u have to have a front mount.... then to refill a 11lb bottle of NOS costs around £45+. this lasts approx 6mins, when using a 25bhp jet...so when u using a multispray system, on the intercooler, then itll cost u LOADS!- besides that the NOS system is good, but better off using the CO2 system , in the Tweeks catalogue as its cheaper ;-) |

Subject: confused Question: white steam coming from exhuast but still not drinkin much coolant, heater dosent kick out warm air and my temp reading erratic. but someone seems to think it isnt head gasket? im confused and pissed off now. new stat ordered Answer: undo expansion tank cap and start car.. if coolant bubblin up, and pushin itself out of tank then its h/g!!! is there alot of steam coming out of oil filler cap? then its h/g. pull the top breather hose off the oil seperator pot......is it full of mayonnaise?- its h/g!!! either that or... you have a major air lock...- cracked house or headgasket problem... the thermostat could be fubar'd too. also check to see if your heater pipes actually connect to the heater matrix, and havent been bypassed!!! white smoke could also be fecked turbo!!!! |

Subject: Fan STILL not kicking in :( Question: Hi wiz, after I asked you about my fan not kicking in last week I checked it iver and did find a small split in a hose. Yesterday the fan seemed to be working ok but it wasn't again today, so I'll give you as much info as poss. The sytsem is pressurised (I checked there was a release of pressure from the header tank after I'd turned the car off) The thermostat works fine and has the 3mm hole at the top. The relay near the radiator works, the fan works when I bridge the switch wires, and it also works off the switch in my car. The only thing I can think of is the fan switch itself, but why would it work yesterday and not today???? Please help Answer: recheck to see if u have an air lock in the system. blow into expansion bottle, and get helper to undo both bleed screws. U must pinch the top small pipe that leads to the expansion bottle, else it'll push air into the system!!! might as well buy a new fan switch if all else fails. still could be intermittent connection inside. afer all it is a piece of metal that bends to make a contact inside the unit...this eventually breaks! |

Subject: Engine out! Question: I'm taking the engine out at the weekend, mainly 'cos the clutch has seized so I'm changing it. But was also, when it is out, going to change the gaskets (got the head set from GSF) and give the engine a lick of paint. Also going to change the timing chain and tensioner and engine mounts. Is there anything else, which maybe doesn't cost too much, that I should do while I have it on the bench? Cheers Answer: clean out the oil feed pipe to the turbo, pay careful attention to the one way valve which may be partially blocked. besides that, there aint nothin else i wud do....besides check the big end bearings for wear ;-) |

Subject: gearbox Question: can anyone tell me if the renault 19 16v gearbox will fit in my r5 gt turbo? and are the gear ratios the same? Answer: it will fit.....but i think it has a cable speedo, and the GTT has an elctronic speedo....so you'd probably have to use a R5 1.7 GTX clocks or summat. not sure bout the ratios....i think they are in haynes manual. |

NO LOSS OF PERFORMANCE, HENCE DONT SUSPECTHEAD GASKET. HAVE CHANGED WATER PUMP, REFITTED PIPES, ADDED WATER. RUN THE ENGINE, TOP HOSE GETS HOT, HUGE AMOUNT OF PRESSURE BUILT UP ON TOP HOSE (THE ONE WITH THE SCREW), WHISTLING AND STEAM. GULP! SWITCH OFF, USE BLEED SCREW LIKE MY RADIATORS AT HOME, UNTIL WATER COMES THROUGH. RESTART, DOES THE SAME THING.
