Subject: cup mod Question: Hi wizard, i posted this recently; ""I have an actuater with one port on it. I also have an incar boost fitted by BB. The hose that comes from the actuater goes to a T piece, where it splits different ways. One way going to the incar adjustable boost, AND one goes to my CARB top with a jet or something inside it. There is another hose next to this one (on the carb again) which goes to the carb base or whatever u call it. can u tell me how i reasemble my boost circuit to the cup mod? what do i put where. Ive read posts but people then start getting a bit technicle. If u can help this would be much apprieciated."" I THOUGHT THE 2 PORTS at the carb top have to be blocked don't they? Answer: no, there are many variations of the cup mod nowadays. |

Subject: Gearbox Question: I have had a wobble at the the front passenger side wheel of my renault for a few weeks now.... However the other day driving my car as normal i tried to engage 5th gear but i couldn't...... 1st time ever since i've had the car for 7 yrs... Do you think the 2 things are linked??? Still can't get it in 5th even with the engine turned off...pls advise...... Answer: one or two things might have happened here the front gear box mount might be split , causing the engine g/box unit to be out of line. and maybe the o/s drive shaft inner joint has lost its grease (this will cause excesive vibration braking the gearbox mount ).. |

Subject: rs xchange Question: do u know if fords rs turbo`s fit on R 5`S as i can get them very cheap were the r5`s are going 2 need a small loan or some thing, im pretty sure there t3 turbos as standard and think r5`s are only t2`s pluss the fords look much bigger so what you think are they the same mounts, will they fit, cheers mate Answer: if u think u can do it, then fine, go ahead, but the cost and time of fitting it, u will realise that u better off fitting a standard gtt lump in, and tuning that instead....after all, when was the last time u saw or even heard of an RST beating a 5, without spending a feckin fortune on the engine. they were slower as standard than the 5, and they are slower when modded too....*lol* is this why most big power RST owners are turboing the zetec lump and sticking that in or making the ZVH hybrid? ill spell it clearly. DO NOT DO IT |

Subject: loose gear change and play Question: hi wiz! i recently had all my engine mounts renewed as i was told they was just about perished. HOWEVER! if im in gear and back off the accelerator and back on again the gearlever has about a cm's play back and forth as i come on/off the accelerator! plus my gearbox is very loose in between gearchanges, sum times i find it hard to find 5! ive just bought a new shaft tension spring and its came with a load of bits aswell. the renault parts monkey said they modified it in some way??? will fitting this give me a tighter gearchange or is there a way of adjusting the selector? also i think the gearbox has been rebuilt at sometime as its been painted gold. cheerz ooooo wiz Answer: you're gearstick will always have a little play in it. if u are that botered by it, check the linkage where it joins the gearbox... also check the hinge where the gearlever joins the linkage under the car. i bet one of these is worn....if u are really paranoid about it ;-) you may have to mess with the knurled rod under the gearlever to get 5th back into play. but u may end up messing with 1st and reverse to do it.... preferably its a two man job.;-) |

Subject: overheating Question: Just fitted a new water pump , everthing seems to be ok but when i stop the temp goes up to just under half way and the fan cuts in , it then cools but kicks in again in about a minute, im not runing a stat and have flushed the rad and bleed the system, i just can't remember it going up that fast it takes about 3-4 min after a run 2 go from below a 1/4 to half way, cheers , if this is normal sorry Answer: have u overfilled with antifreeze, as this can do odd things to yer temp. also check the small hose that goes from the water pump to the manifold!!!- this can leak givin high readings! if all pipes are ok, do not worry, as u appear to be sufferin from renault paranoia..... is it gonna blow up next time i use it? etc etc etc....spend more time looking at the temp gauge than the road??? yada yada... ;-) |

Subject: consumption Question: as a turbo im aware that my car will use more fuel, but if i put £20 in when on red, im lucky to get 80miles out of it? is this about the norm?any suggestions? Answer: it means u either losing alot of fuel, or you have a really spec'd up carb/ engine. and as i can't be bothered to check yer profile, ill have to guess! u could have a leaky: manifold, carb, fuel tank. |

Subject: set up Question: iv just got a carb kit as my r5 hase been sat around for a while now and just dont seem right, k tec have advised and sold me the kit and a 1.30 main jet with a 0.9 main air corector and insured me that this is what i need on my stanard engein and turbo to run a safe 17 psi is this corect, also what should my read out on the emisions be as i would like it set up right for running 17 psi with my new 1.30 jet etc it would save me so much hassle if u could help, thanks steve Answer: if ktec have sold u the kit then listen to what they have to say. if u got a standard venturi and cam on the car, id say it'd be good for 19psi at the carb top.if in doubt ask ktech again, they've got yer money, so now they should supply the help...:-) |

Subject: CAMBER ANGLE! Question: Hi, I have just fitted AVO coil-overs to me 5. To fit them, Phase 1 centralised top mounts had to be used. From what I can tell, it looks like I have at least 5 deg. of negative camber! Have AVO drilled the bolt holes for the hubs in the wrong place? = massive negative BTCC touring car style camber (which I would'nt mind if I was running slick tyres), and serious tyre wear. Do I have to kick their a***'s?? cheers, Crazy Chris (8+ years of R5 GTT experience) (1 day of AVO experience) Answer: why have you 'had to fit' ph1 top mounts? the ph2 mounts push the hub outwards, so logic suggests that you should try and fit the ph2 top mounts to rectify the problem. especially if you have coil overs to fit the ph2 ;o) maybe im bein a little simplistic here. regards turbo wizard (general pi$$taker and bodge artist) (0 days of Avo experience, just a little sense) *lol* |

Subject: Window motor Question: Alrite mr oz, wondering if you could tell me how to change 1 of these over or if you ve have any links which cud show me help well appreciated Answer: take the door card off. lower the window via the switch, so that the two bolts are in view, one thru a little porta in the door. then undo all the bolts, and either push the glass up, and remove the unit, or, pull off the outer furflex seal, and remove the glass too... its pretty easy to see what to do....just can be awkward sometimes |

Subject: Gearbox Question: Hey wizard u know that prblem with 5th gear well hey i was driving on the motorway in 4th and tried 5th great ...hey presto its back to normal??? Like the problem didn't exist... ALso i have been told that the tyre wobble is due to the hub needing replacing..is this easy to do...if so what do i need to take of?? Answer: id say the tyre wobble is more likely to be a bent wheel than a bent hub!!! jack up the one side of the car, and take the wheel off. then start the car and put into first gear. the wheel off the ground will start goin round, and you can then check to se if the hub is bent, by watching the edge of the disc! - thentake your wheel down the local kwiksh1t garage, and have them balance it....they will tell straight away if its buckled ;-) |

Subject: CAMBER ANGLE! Question: Hi, According to AVO's fitting instructions (supplied with Reno part numbers) phase 1 top mounts have to be used, because the shafts are higher than normal. Because of this, if phase 2 top mounts were used, they would make contact with the suspension housing = very expensive ouch! It looks like I'm gonna have to phone AVO and give them some interagation!! Is nowt ever straight forward??? cheers for you damm quick reply, Crazy Chris Answer: what a nightmare!!!! now does the avo use a rubber top mount? ie the castellated one? - if so...use the clio one...its harder rubber, has a metal insert, fits a treat, and is a bit higher than the standard one..i.e it'll push the top of the strut down a bit..... |

Subject: CAMBER ANGLE - SORTED! Question: Hi Wizard, Just to let you know, it was all down to AVO giving me Phase 1 instructions, for all the intro said Phase 2. So the moral of the story is: If you want your car to look like a BTCC Touring car, then fit Phase 1 top mounts to Phase 2 shockers (not recommended for prolonging your tyre life). If you don't: Ignore the bloody instructions! ta da, Crazy Chris Answer: pr@ts! |

Subject: block/gearbox Question: ive just got block out of 5,with gearbox,is there anything too take note of before or during splitting gearbox/engine,i will be changing crankshaft oil seal (behind flywheel isnt it ? )thank you Answer: yeah, when u take the gearbox off, mark the flywheel in relation to the crank and the block, otherwise, when you take it off, u will have a terrible game getting the car to run ever again!- as the flywheel will be in the wrong position! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! I REPEAT, DO NOT FECK THIS UP, ELSE I WILL OFFICIALLY CALL U THE WORLDS BIGGEST LOSER!!!! then just lever out the seal and tap the new one in place. have a nice day :-) |

Also, how many idle adjustment screws are thier on the solex 32 carb. gimme FIVE, (little joke) ha ha Answer: yeah, it is a little joke.....probably why im not laffing. just change the diaphragms anyway, u never know what may be fecked in the carb...usual trick is that they stretch and get pin holes in them. i think there are two idle adjusts...one low speed and one fast idle...or summat like that...better check with haynes carb manual !!! while u are at it, get a joke book too. |

Subject: carb Question: hi wizz how do i know if i have a group A carb. Also my car keeps hisitating when i accelerate. sounds like it is blocked somewhere. cheers Answer: u cant tell if u got a group a carb, unless u take it apart and measure all the jets, and the venturi size. u could need a new dizzy cap or even timin sensor. these also cause jerkiness, so does an clogged fuel filter too..... |

Answer: u been drinking Metz? the Judderman cometh? there are sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many reasons why. check your overboost switch, disconnect it. check yer timing sensor lead, is it burned? check yer cap/rotor/plugs/leads/bellend/whatever, for strange buildup/corrosion/disease/malformation/elephantitis. then suspect carb probs....inwhich case, strip...the carb, not yourself, and clean thoroughly....the carb and yourself. and get a diaphragm kit from whoever. it's not only the GTi's laffin at ya ;-) |

Subject: Wobble Question: Just a follow up. I f i jacked up the car and put it in 1st gear wouldn't it shoot off???? Anyway i have taken the tyre off....then moved the disc left and right and it still moves.....so i'm thinking worn wheeel bearing?? Also there is a slight knocking noise when i take a right turn from the left tyre side always on a quarter turn... driveshaft?? Today i noticed a noise coming from the same side....so i jacked up the car checked driveshaft felt solid no leaks....however the tyre felt tight as if it's not freely turning when spun...handbrake not on and car also out of gear???? Pls help Answer: are we talking about the frontof the car or the rear here??? if u jack the car up, so the front wheel is off the ground, it will not shoot off the jack, when started and put in first!!!- unless u got a locked diff....which is exceptionally unlikely, as ud never be able to corner!!! wobbly disc, could be wheel bearing. clunks are usually cv joint. a stiff wheel is blatently a sticking caliper. |

Subject: Bit of this and that... Question: 1. If im aiming to run 16psi day to day with a max of 25psi possible, what pistons would you recommend using on my re-build? Standard or low comp? 2. with 25psi and a limited budget in mind, is water injection and a front mount I/C better or a charge cooler? cheers wiz Answer: stick with standard compression pistons if u are gonna run water injection. get low comp if u are not. i think water injection and a front mount are more likely to keep charge temps down.... |

I THINK SO WILL A FOAD RS/ TURBO FIT ON AN R5 MANAFOLD, SORRY FOR NOT XPLAINING PROPALLY AND THANKS FOR YOUR HELP / STEVE \ Answer: an escort's turbo has a t3 flange, the r5 has a t2 flange, u need to weld a bracket on the manifold to get it to fit....the real problem is the exhaust elbow, and the fact that IT WILL NOT BOOST UNTIL 5K!!! the turbo is far too large for street use....i know, as i had to take a t3 escort turbo off a 5 a few years ago.... wasnt pretty!!! if u were gonna use a turbo, get a rover 220turbo unit. |
