Subject: heat shield

Question:
ne idea how to take the heat shield off the car? i can only find one screw but the heatshield wnt come off. and if i get it off am i get ne adverse effects? thanks again

Answer:
there are bolts next to the drivers side shock tower, and down the side, inbetween the firewall and the turbo!!! this is assuming u have a full heatshield!
removing this will cause damage to the surrounding wiring and also increase intake charge temperatures!!
this is why everyone does it?? ;o)

Subject: Overboost cut out (or maybe not?)

Question:
Wizard, I have a 1990 Raider fitted with a GTT Dump-valve, In-car adjustable boost, Spider Valve and a KTR 180 Turbo with the maximum boost set at the fun end of the red (I don't know what that equates to in psi!). The car was running spot-on until a couple of days ago, when the ignition began cutting out under hard acceleration. This happens exactly when the needle on the boost gauge reaches the beginning of the red (when the boost is set at max), but doesn't occur if I feed in the boost gradually on the in-car control! It feels exactly the same as when the overboost switch cuts the ignition, but it can't be (or can it?) as I run the car with it disconnected! Also, it sounds like there's an air leak on the induction system somewhere, but it's been like it for the pask couple of weeks as I'm buggered if I can find it! Not sure if the last bit is related, just thought I'd give you the full picture. Thanks in advance. Ads

Answer:
if u are running standard hoses check the area where the boost switch joins the hose, as it can fail here..... also check the feed off the hose just before it joins the carb top...the one that goes to the solenoid on the bulk head- this can leak also...infact block it off to make sure the solenoid aint screwed either!
check to see if yer timin sensor aint touching the manifold...infact replace it anyway. then check to see if u aint got a loose earth , or that yer main live aint come away off the back of yer firewall and is shortin out on the exhaust pipe from the turbo!- or even that the starter motor feed aint shortin on the 'y' clamp that holds the exhaust in place!
also make sure the boost sensor leads arent touching any bodywork or each other!!!

Subject: Alternator probs

Question:
Hi Its me again!!

This time I'm really puzzled. One evening my car died and I bumped it to get it home with no lights etc. Found that the battery leads werent connected tightly. Tightened them up and the car seemed to charge again for a few days. Then it happened again. Looked at the alternator and the two wires coming from the top were fecked, the dimwit who had the car before me has connected them both together and stuffed them in one hole. So they must both be live? also had 3 parts down the wire that were taped up. cut the crappy wire out and reconnected it with proper connecters. It now has two wires but they both must be live.does it matter which way they go? I also have no battery light at all. Car seemed fine again then conked out few days later. Now it charges, then you go over a bump and it doesnt - loose connection somewhere but cant find it? when the car isnt charging there is no spark in either of the wires coming from the top of the alternator - does this mean the alternator is not working? Surely an alternator cannot work then not work or could there be a loose wire inside?

Please help Im completely confused by these two wires (both yellow) and dont want to change the alternator for nothing??

Cheers

Answer:
this just seems like a simple wiring prob

the yellow wire connects the the smaller of the two terminals on the reg of the alternator this wire provides the alt with battery voltage tat it needs to work

the purple wire goes to the larger of the two terminals .
this makes the dash light work

all it should take is a few conectors and the wires putting back were they should be andyou should be back in bisness

Subject: Head Gasket

Question:
Hi Wizard

The head gasket on my 1989 R5GTT has gone ~ sob sob sob! I intend to replace the gaskets and bolts with uprated items and would also like to know if there's anything else worth checking or replacing (both service and performace wise) whilst the head is off?

Many thanks

Answer:
u could change the liner seals, but this involves take the sump off too.
you could also attempt to change the cam, but u gotta take the timing gear off on get the engine tilted at a very high angle, to get clearance for the cam....
its probably better off just to change the headgasket. red faceP

Subject: Dirty water

Question:
hello again!! I asked before (Q ID3474) about the fact i had some oil in my water. After being fobbed off by the dude at the rad testin place (IMO) he was convinced it was head gasket and told me to go away and do that then come back if that wasn't the prob!(even though he claimed my rad pressure tested ok)
I did my HG, replaced with uprated jobby and 12.9 bolts torqued to 65NM.
So - What should i do now? The oil has gone down a couple of mm on the dipstick in 200 miles, so I am almost sure it's going somewhere. Were these cars known for using abit of oil?
The way I see it I either need a new rad -then do i go for copper core or campus and sep oil cooler?
Or my turbo is the culprit or finally it totally fubard - unlikely i guess cos there ain't that much oil?
What would you do and in what order?
Thank you very much for your valuable magic time :-)

Answer:
id get a new rad first, as u will probably need a new one for summer anyway!
then look at the turbo.
if the car is still losin oil after the rad, then sell yer old rad ;o)
also check to see the oil just aint leakin away!!!

Subject: cup mod + & -

Question:
ok mate, 1stly what are the disadvantages of the cup mod..?
and 2ndly the advantages..?
cheers he-man!!

Answer:
disadvantages- might have to turn actuator up slightly to compensate for slight boost loss, as actuator now receiving slightly different info from engine.
advantages - less pipework, u can now fit a cossie actuator. etc etc

Subject: hissing noise

Question:
when im pulling up hills full throttle if my windows open i can hear a intermitting hissing noise coming from under the bonnet any ideas mate cheers happy new year wizzo !

Answer:
could be leak from manifold...as the engine is workin harder than usual goin up a hill, hence more exhuast gas production... searchin out weak spots in manifold gasket?
could even be air passin over the top/bottom of the engine...makin whistlin noise...could be anything at all!!!
then theres the leaky boost hose angle....

Subject: hissing

Question:
hi, thx 4 the info on the power ranger! i have another Q.
I have had a hissing noise since i have owned my car, I have tracked it down to the area around the ecu, but its hard to to be sure cause it only does it on full boost. Can the ecu leak boost or is this noise normal?
Also i read in another Q there is a inlet on the carb that can be blocked, its on the passenger side of the carb and the pipe that goes to it is in the boost circuit from the actuator to ecu, what does it do and can it be blocked? i have done the cup mod.
1 more thing! My auxilary fuel tank pump has stopped pumping is it safe to leave it like that or shall i fix?
oh just 1 more! My lights have started flickering when reving would u guess this to be a batery or alternater fault? also my heater, wipers and lights all work with ignition turned off, i think it could be a bad earth as the electrics are abit dodgy and theres always a humming noise through my stereo! Is there suppose to be a earth from the battery striaght to the body?
feeeww i'm outa puff...........better go get some hehe.
thx wink

Answer:
it aint a normal noise!- you have a blatent leak somewhere, id start checking pipework!
you can block the pipe mentioned. it equalises the pressure going to the actuator across the venturi.
id check the aux tank relay, hidden behind the drivers side rear panel. u can leave it though....just remember to fill up when the red light comes on!!!
it could be a dodgy live feed too!- check earths and lives, especially the large connector that feed the light units. the main earth comes straight off the battery and joins straight to the body.

Subject: going for 25psi

Question:
I'm gonna be wanting to turn the boost up high for the national day, and want to know what bits would need replacing/strengthening to do this.

I am currently running a standard T2, and would get getting a large T25 to replace this. I'd also be getting BBT to install their injector kit to take the fueling up, to cope with 25psi. And i'd be replacing the head gasket with an uprated one. It'd also be setup on the rolling road to sort fuelling out (as per injector setup). Apart from that, the engine would be standard.

What cha think?

Answer:
sounds good, hope ur intake charge temperature is gonna be nice and low....
new intercooler/chargecooler or water injection??? just to be on da safe side.......aiiiii!

Subject: boost

Question:
on my r5 turbo what is maxium boost i can run without ruining a spot on engine it as a t25 turbo 360 bearing, big intercooler and various other mods at moment it is 18 psi ,can it go higher?

Answer:
with a standard carb, i would'nt go over 15psi.
if u got ya carb sorted, id say go for 22psi.
u'd need water injection for much more. or a full fuel and ignition map system!
but the higher u go the more unreliable it will become!- u have been warned *lol*

Subject: CAM?

Question:
Hi! what do you think about thease cam\

catcam 5500312

clearance [cl] 0.15mm 0.15mm
duration [0.1mm+cl] 323° 323°
duration [1.0mm+cl] 255° 255°
valve lift [cl=0] 9.55mm 9.55mm
cam lift 6.35mm 6.35mm
peak angle 110° 110°
timing [1.0mm+cl] 19/56° 59/16°
lift at TDC [cl=0] 2.70mm 2.45mm

Answer:
sounds ok, u could get more lift out of it though at the valve. go for 10.5mm and u'll need some new valve springs.
im not sure how they are reading the duration, as they talkin about when the valve is starting to lift?
alot of cam manufacturers use different points in the cam cycle to measure stuff.....maybe this is why peeps use piper and kent alot, cos they use the same datum points....

Question:
Would i be able to use a rad from a 1.4 r5 (not turbo) if i use a seperate oil cooler and would this be better than a standard gt turbo one with the oil cooler built in. And i have a fairly big 7 row oil cooler from a tractor would this be any good or would i loose a lot of oil pressure cos of the size of it???

Answer:
id use the clio diesel rad, as its bigger. id also use the oil, cooler off a metro turbo or some vauxhall thing if i were you...u dont want the oil getting too cold else it wont be in it working range, and feck your engine.

Subject: Incar boost with cup mod

Question:
Hi mate,
I need your help cos im a bit thick and whenever i read posts about this subject everyone starts getting a bit technicle.

I have an actuater with one port on it. I also have an incar boost fitted by BB. The hose that comes from the actuater goes to a T piece, where it splits different ways. One way going to the incar adjustable boost, AND one goes to my CARB top with a jet or something inside it. There is another hose next to this one (on the carb again) which goes to the carb base or whatever u call it.

can u tell me how i reasemble my boost circuit to the cup mod? what do i put where. Ive read posts but people then start getting a bit technicle. If u can help this would be much apprieciated.

Answer:
that is the cup mod. the one port actuator setup u mention is already in the cup mod configuration.

Question:
hi wiz, just picked up a t3 from a reno 18. can imix and match parts from my exsisting t2 to make my own hybrid or can i just bang it on? how would i go about making it spin up earlier being a big turbo and all that?

Answer:
you may have to weld on an adapter plate onto the r5 manifold to accept the t3...it all depends what flange u have on. then the problem of oil feeds and turbo elbow rears it uglee head, but ill leave you to sort that nightmare out.
try fitting NOS to spin turbo up quicker.

Subject: gear box

Question:
hey there wiz, i got a prob with my gear box, since my 5 got nicked and got it back, the gear stick is wobbly like jelly and when i shift into second i have to sort of hold it in place until i apply the gas again, the gear stick just wont hold it self in 2nd gear on its own, every other gear seems ok but the gear stick did sometimes used to jump out of gear in 2nd when i wasnt applyin the gas and went ova a bump.

i have already seen an expert on this and he says i need a new gear box but not at this mo,sayin its a problem i can live with

what do u thinks?

thanx,keep up the good work!

Answer:
id say the 'expert'is correct, although i would also check your engine mounts to see if the engine is moving the gearbox too much... the wobble gear stick means u broken the tiny spring that connects under the body of the car to the gear linkage....easy to fix.
