Subject: Anti-Perc System

Question:
Hiya Wizard.
I'm missing the turbo heat sensor and solenoid valve cos they were screwed when I got the car so i've blanked up the inlet to the boost hose and the outlet of the perc fan to the boost hose. I still have the carb sensor which is working & cooling correctly. Do I need to replace the missing components and will there be any damaging effects due to running without the 2nd sensor & solenoid?

Answer:
no effect whatsoever matey.
but just to make sure, you'd better ask a Peugeot mechanic, cos i heard they know alot more than us poor old renault owners *lol*

Subject: haet sheild

Question:
Mr wiz, cud u please tell me wot is the sensor on the top of my heat sheild for ? Is it important that i keep the heat sheild on ? And lastly i just got a standard 5 with an uprated gasket but want to turn the boost up what is the max that u wud safely recomend for that engine i fort it wud b around 15 psi ?

Thanx for any help

Answer:
15psi is good.
the heat shield does lower the under bonnet temperatures a bit, and also stops the wires over the top of the turbo getting fried!
the sensor ontop of the heatshield turns your antiperc fan on.

Subject: Oil in boost hoses

Question:
hay wiz I've just replaced the boost hoses on my car and there covered in a stickey oil!!! what could it be and how do i stop it!! thanks

Answer:
covered internally or externally?
if its internal, change your breather system, so that the breather pipe is removed from the turbo inlet pipe. remember to block the hole up!
it could be yer turbos shafted too.

Subject: What turbo???

Question:
alright wiz, is there anyway of findin out if a turbo is a rollerbearing turbo without actually taking it apart, and taking someone else's word for it?

cheers

Answer:
yeah. spin the turbine blades by hand. if its rollerbearing, it spins for a few seconds, and makes a faint whirring sound. if its normal bearings, they turbo for less than a full turn and then stop!

Subject: rev counter

Question:
please help my dash is all over the plaice the revs keep up and down speedo not working and oil temp/pressure not working any ideas

Answer:
take the clocks out, and clean all the earths and connectors thoroughly!
failing that.
each one of the said items could be faulty, as the oil pressure gauage rarely works. the speedo sensor could be shafted , and you could have a dodgy connection at the ecu for the tacho connection!

Subject: ROLLER BEARING

Question:
HI AGAIN, JUST A QUICK QUESTION, IVE BEEN OFFERD A K-TECS ROLLERBEARING TURBO WITH T3 ACTUATOR BY MY MATE OFF HIS CAR AS HE HAS TOTALED HIS R5 AND IS GOING FOR SOMETHING DIFFRENT SO HAS NO NEED FOR THE ENGINE OR TURBO ANYMORE. IT HAS A PRE-SET MAX BOOST OF 30PSI SO I CAN SEE THAT ITS BEEN OVER BOOSTING BUT THERE IS A LITTLE BACK AND FORTH PLAY SO HOW CAN I TELL IF ITS ANY GOOD WITHOUT FITTING IT OR IS THIS NOT POSSIBLE? AND CAN THEY BE RE-BULIT IF ITS KNACKERED?

Answer:
how do u mean, back and forth play? - in and out along the axis of the shaft, or side to side, so u are technically wobbling the shaft? in and out is very bad, side to side up to a point is normal...
best test is to fit it though.
i think they can be rebuilt, but you'll have to do a bit of searchin to find someone that does it!

Subject: a small question

Question:
just wondering if there are ne problems running high boost with what i think is the boost sensor atatched? i think its the sensor near the intercooler but correct me if im wrong, thanks

Answer:
the boost sensor is supposed to cut the spark at around 15psi....if you pull one of the wires off it, it doesn't do anythng ;-)

Subject: CAMSHAFTS

Question:
I have just fitted an uprated cam (k-tec racing power system camshaft) what measurements should i use for the valve clearences?

Answer:
standard is 8 thou for inlet and 10 thou for exhaust (cold)
probably best off asking ktec themselves, but they'll probably say, do 10 thou inlet and 12 thou exhaust!

Subject: Wobble

Question:
Just a quickie...

I took my car for an M.O.T and i found it failed due excessive play on the front passenger side.

I have had it checked out and it does not appear the driveshaft nut, wheel bearing, or any loose components.

I have been told it could be the casing which holds the disc and is attached to the bottom of the strut, could this be and if so can you tell us what it's called...

Answer:
it could be the bottom ball joint....
the track rod end...the wishbone bushes.... the top strut mount rubber.
the bit u are on about is the hub, which connects to the wishbine at the bottom, via the bottom ball joint. the steering rack via the trackrod, and the track rod end. and has two bolts that connect it to the bottom of the damper/strut unit!!!
the hub has the bearing pressed in it, and has a flange that goes thru the centre of it. thru the centre of that the driveshaft slides into!

Subject: plate for tailgate

Question:
Hi i would like to flush my tailgate but a can't get a plate for it do you know if there is a place in scotland

Answer:
i think most places just get mild steel plate and weld it on.... i think u can probably get this from a ferrous metal merchant, which i bet there are plenty up there....especially ones which scrap stuff, or have 'weigh in' equipment.

Subject: Unstable Boooost

Question:
Hey Wiz,

Just a quick one for ya, my 5 lurches with unstable accerleration when I stick my foot down in second gear. I'm running 8psi boost and was wondering if it was due to the fact that there is too much/too little fuel getting into the engine. I don't know what kinda boost the car was running before as I have only recently bought the car. It might be that the previous owner was running high boost which would have needed better fueling. Could this cause my car to be all over the shop!?

Cheers wiz

Answer:
sounds more like a boost leak to me. could be manifold/pipes/intercooler. check everything!!! 8psi boost will not be starving the engine of fuel!!- a standard carb can take 15psi!!!!
also get a new set of plugs and rotor/cap.
also, in second gear the car rocks alot, so u may be stretching or causing a break in the timing sennsor wire, that connects to the ecu, this will cause seriously crap running!!!

Subject: Crank case pressure!

Question:
Hi Wiz,

Been checking out a mates 5 thats for sale. It has a slight problem thats bothering him.

What can be causing crankcase pressure build up thats throwing oil out the breather on the oil catch tank! Compression test shows all cylinders between 125 - 128 psi. Pistons & liners 3000miles old. No water loss, normal running temps. Drives very well. No smoke from exhaust when following the car. Oil breather system cleaned out & restrictors in place.

Any ideas coz this one is puzzling us??

Answer:
ok, i think 125psi is not that high....mine are usually 150psi after running in.
who did the rebuild? has he been running big boost, and fried the rings?
how have u got the oil catch tank fitted?
if u are running big boost, then they always chuck oil ;-)

more info is needed pls!

Subject: Boost then no boost!!!

Question:
Hi there,

I got into my car after about a week amd took it for a spin and realised the boost wasn't rising all the way, however this altered depending on which gear I was in. In 1st there was no boost however as I climded through the gears the level of boost increased. This has been getting worse and worse and finally now I have no boost. There is however a hissing noise but I have checked the boost hoses and tried different dump valves but this has resulted in no success.

Any Ideas???

Answer:
four words my friend:
check
the
exhaust
manifold.

Subject: turbo charged ranger

Question:
hi, ive just bought a power ranger ''turbo addition'' and i'm wondering where i can find the adjustment for the wastegate as i want to run around 20 psi of boost, i've been told its hard to get to as it is diguised by by 2 big nuts, will i need a special tool? also i have heared running high boost can blow a O-ring if the range's thong hasnt been strapped or flowed? thx
p.s:
i bought it so i could attract little boys, cos i can't get a normal girlfriend, and i heard they're nice and tight, just like sheep and chickens....

Answer:
well, what can i say! i think you you must have got a shady jap import one....as ive heard that the UK spec has smaller nuts, and u dont need a special tool...
as for blowing your ring....well, id say run low boost and do more 'head work', as apparently, u can get more juice into your head by having larger orifices, to suck with :-)

as for your young boy fixation.....good job i can change your question slightly aint it ....ho ho ho merry christmas.

Subject: Crankcase pressure 2!

Question:
Hi Wiz,

As far as I know he runs 22psi max. A local garage has done the work. Only pistons & liners changed (apparantly the rest was fine). They are low compression pistons. Oil catch tank is mounted onto suspension turret (it's a K-tec jobbie). Pipe usually connected to turbo inlet elbow is plumbed to it.

My car runs 20psi all the time with a similar oil catch tank system (PMT special) with hardly any oil pushed out??

Answer:
have u got the 7mm restrictor in the pipe to the catch tank and the 1.7mm restrictor in the pipe to the manifold?
im still not likin the low compression in the engine.
22psi is quite alot, considerin that it's supposed to be run at 7psi ;-)

Subject: dipping torque curve

Question:
I have a RR graph for my 5, the torque curve peaks at 3300 and straightlines down to 6000. Here's the figures:

RPM Power Torque
3000 87 156
3300 105 166 - peak torque
4000 120 157
5000 137 144
5850 142 127 - end of graph

Is this usual for the 5's, looking at others and they seem to peak much higher in the rev range.
Std T2, 15psi, GTT lobster back, ram raid kit, strapped and flowed std IC, adjst timing sensor, new racing plugs, disty n rotor, mongoose s/s exhaust + large downpipe, k-tek 'A' DV.
ps, the graph was showing a 34hp power loss so peak wheel power was 110!!

Answer:
the bhp and power graphs should always cross at summat like 5250bhp.
its been documented plenty on the board! :-)
id say u were looking at 140-150bhp....

Subject: what is that rumbling ?

Question:
get on wizard please help me mate . when i get up to speed around 50 60 mph i get a bad rumbling noise that shakes the passenger side of the car i think it might b either the wheel bearing or drive shaft ? normally happens up hills any ideas ?

Answer:
either your wheel need balancing or....you need the cv joint regreasing.
at 60+ mph, the grease, when its old, goes like oil, and spins to the outside of the boot, i.e away from the joint itself!!!- it starts humming like a goodun'!!!

Question:
Following up to the q's earlier to be more specific if you hold the front left hand tyre and hold it either side......then move left to right it has play, but feels solid could it be the hub itself could be worn, as everthing else seems solid.

Pls advise as at the weekend my mate is breaking his renault and i can get hold of relevant parts....

Answer:
track rod end failure usually means wobble left and right....
could also be the wishbone bushes, or a wheel bearing thats about to go west!
get the whole hub off yer mate....

Subject: Crankcase pressure 3?

Question:
Hi Wiz,

Yep. All correct restrictors in place. I agree, 22psi is pretty high but not that wild for low compression pistons. Did some more comp tests last night with the engine hot & with my comp gauge & his. It appears one gauge is reading incorrectly. Mine shows all cylinders 139-142psi & his shows 125-128psi??

Anyway, have decided to take the head off & check bores & rings over this weekend. Had enough messing around & scratching our heads! I'll let you know what we find.

Also, I've done my good deed for 2003. I have managed to talk sense into my mate & he's keeping the 5. I know he won't regret it.

Happy Christmas & New Year to you & all the other Wizards.

Answer:
cheers dude, im sure 'all the other wizards' will have a good one too *lol*

Subject: Turning down the Boost !

Question:
Hi Wiz, smile

OK - I will soon be going on a long trip down the motorway (a good 5 hour journey) - and basically want to turn down the Boost!
(to stop it spooling all the time while I'm cruising at - ummm, errrrr 70)!!

So how can I ""turn down"" the Boost?
Will doing this cause any negative effects on the Turbo/Engine?

(sorry if this is a stupid question)!!

Keep up the great work (whoever you are) wink ,
Regards,
Daniel.

Answer:
well, you could disconnect the actuator rod from the wastegate completely, and run no boost at all!
or you could lengthen the rod, as this descreases boost!

Subject: temp loss of boost

Question:
i keep loosing boost when i get to 3000 rpm then it boosts again and then yesterday i lost it totaly there are no leaks and the turbo spins freely (only had it re-con'd last week) any ideas?

Answer:
is the car pulling as it used to? - or is there definate power loss?
either way, U HAVE A LEAK! OR A FECKED TURBO :-)
my advice is check again ;-)
if u lost no power then check the hoses to the turbo gauge.
if u have lost power check all boost hoses, intercooler and even manifolds!
