Subject: performance

Question:
hi wiz, i was talking to you a while back about gtl turbo conversion, i done it and went to rr and got 120bhp and 150lbs at 16psi. running a 135main jet and overfueling like mad. Could my gtl cam have a bad effect on my performance and wen would this cam be benefitial ie bigger turbo, higher revs etc.Could the cam be the problem?
Thanks

Answer:
i dont know the spec of the gtl cam. if its got less duration and less lift than the turbo cam, then this would be the problem.
overfuelling will not help in the slightest.- this kills off power like you wouldn't believe!

Subject: Fuel smell

Question:
yo wizard wssup,

My car stinks of petrol inside, mainly when its warmed up, it doesn't when its cold. So i went to check where its coming from so i was sniffing around in my engine bay and saw petrol vapour coming from the little breather filter.

Why is it coming out of there so much????? ITS COLD AND I NEED SOME HEATING WITHOUT GETTING HIGH OFF THE FUMES!

Answer:
sounds like you are running so much fuel from yer carb into your engine that, the compression of the engine is pushing fuel vapour into yer sump and then out of yer breather system.
or, the one way valve at the back of yer manifold is blocked and aint one way anymore!!!
also suspect bleed valve exhaust vent too.

Subject: re: smoking

Question:
Hi, when u say its the turbo, what would u say is wrong with it, it doesnt seem to have lost any power, and its only done 800 miles, thanks

Answer:
ok,it could be the breather system pushing oil into the inlet side of the turbo from, the small pipe that pushes into the U bend. or it could be the oil seals on the turbo are shor. this could be due to excess boost bein pushed thru it, or dodgy oil feed to the turbo has boogered it. or maybe even oil contamination if u are real unlucky :-(

Subject: Starter Motor Went crazy!!

Question:
Bit of a funny one??
After changing my oil I disconected the main lead to the distrobuter and cranked the engine over as recomended. however when I disengeged the ignition the starter motor kept going and wouldn't stop. I tried putting the lead back on but it wouldn't start the engine, just kept going. It only stoped when I puy my immoboliser key in the slot. Then the engine started fine. It hasn't happened since. It is a newish starter one of those volvo ones. Any suggestions or shouldn't I worry about it.
Thanks

Answer:
don't worry about it until it starts happening regularly!
it could either be touching wires at the back of the starter, or a dodgy ignition barrel!

Subject: Engine knock

Question:
just went to put the car in the garage, got out the car to hear a knocking noise so i had a quick look, listen. its coming from the engine sounds like metal hiting metal type of noise. it doesnt really get any noiser when reved, bit more noticable at idle.

Im thinking bottom end surely not ?? only done 3500miles havent even put any strain on it yet?

Thanx

Answer:
what about yer oil pressure?
i did a rebuild on my car, drove it 5miles home, and the bottom end started knocking. - my oil pressure dropped off and the big end/main bearings looked like grizzly adams had tried to eat em for breakfast!
could be bottom end or chain, or even cam. perhaps even thrust bearing on clutch. try it again and put clutch down. then listen, and then let clucth go.

Subject: oil in boost pipes

Question:
hi,do all 5s get oil in the boost system or is this a bad sign/ill health symptom!a car i broke a while back had lots of oil in the boost system ,lots of thick oil in the bottom of ic but this car had been overfilled with oil quite drastically.my car does get a little bit oily in pipes?just wondering thx.

Answer:
if u got an oil breather filter on the car, then its very likely the turbo is on its way out....very slowly. if u still have the original breather set up, then a little oil does appear!

Subject: big ends

Question:
hi ya do any of you wizards no of an up rated big end bolts ive tryed ARP but got loughed at (wankers)

Answer:
lets try this answer again *lol*
My 'big end' takes alot of 'stick', especially when giving it a good 'pounding' ;O)
i rev mine to very high figures, and ive never had the bottom end bolts, break, warp or anything like that. i usually find its the top end that gives way and sheds metal into the engine and knackers it.
so what we're tryin to say is:
are you sure u really need uprated big end bolts? and even if u do, surely a man in your position, would have more contacts than most people...hence, if u can't find them, i doubt we can :-(
- anyway, word on the street is that u cant get them anyway.
- the other word on the street is that ive got big boll0cks and like very young girls, so who knows whats true these days *lol*

the bolt in the back shocks of my car have snapped again...........i now think this is due to the car being too low at the back and is causing too much strain on them.....

i need help in finding out a few things........i have adjustable koni shocks at th rear. they are on the harder setting ( i have three to choose from....soft, medium and hard). will it help if i put them on medium setting or should i get the car higher at the back?
also can i get these bolts to a higher standard than what renault give???

many thanks dude

Answer:
craig, you lovable fellow you ;-)
you probably could get uprated bolts from a fastening company - check yellow pages.
but id first of all suggest getting bump stops for the back of your mowta, as I KNOW ITS ON THE FECKING DECK!

Subject: rollerbearing

Question:
What is the difference between a rollerbearing turbo and a normal one?

Answer:
a normal turbo can have either a 270° or a 360° thrust bearing, with a normal journal bearing. a roller bearing turbo has roller bearings, similar to wheel bearings (but obviously smaller) that the shaft of the turbo fits through. it provides more stability and hence longer life for the turbo. some RB turbos have only one roller bearing though, and some have two...obviously two bearing one is the turbo to go for.

Subject: Service

Question:
HI,

Just a quickie, i am to service my Motor, just wondering with the NGK 8bev spark plugs what is the setting supposed to be?

Also i have a fuel filter bought from renault is this easy to fit??

Lastely which is the easist way to access the oil filter, i was told from the top if you move the alternator..pls advise

Cheers

Answer:
leave the plug gaps as they are, they should be preset. if not, set them to 28 thousands of an inch.

the fuel filter is easy to fit, provided you have two clamps to stop fuel flowing everywhere!

oil filter removal is alot easier if you swing the alt forward and undo the two rad pipes to the waterpump, and swing them out the way.
then its easy access :-)

Question:
am i right in thinking that the engine has to come out for these to be changed? a mate of mine told me that u cange change the bearing on some fords from underneath the car with the engine still in the bay?!?!?

yeah, the big ends can be changed quite easily with the sump off and the engine still in the car, as demonstrated by certain members in a field at santa pod last year red faceS

Subject: Car Has suddenly started to overheat!

Question:
Oh wise wizard

Please can you help me!? Yesterday i went to pick up some mates from their house which is a 5 minute drive away. On the way i noticed the temperature rised faster than usual and i was driving gently as I usually do when the engine is warming up. By the time I had got there my temperature guage was almost at the top! Usually it is in the middle. When I stopped, steam was coming out of the drivers side of the engine bay. I opened the bonnet and it seemed to be comming from around the water pump and I could hear a hissing/fizzing noise coming from the same area.

I checked the coolant level and it was normal. On the rocker cover there were a few drops of what looked like coolant (green blobs) I checked the hoses and I can't see any apparent leaks...

Hope you can help

Answer:
let me tell you exactly what the problem is :-)
there is a single hose that comes from the back of the manifold, and loops round onto the waterpump. its partially hidden by the black pot- oil seperator pot. pull off the pot and undo the jubbly clip, then carefully chack to see the loverly split u now have there ;-)
chop back and re-attach!
if it aint that then also check the incar heater hose that runs RIGHT NEXT TO THE FAN BELT! - if u catch my drift ;-)

Subject: Car Has suddenly started to overheat! (PART II)

Question:
Mr Wizard,

I had a look at the hoses that you suggested and could not see any apparent leaks frown

There must be a leak somewhere as there is coolant on the rocker cover and some on the back of the drivers side headligh, but I can't locate it. I took the little black pot off and that had a bit of coolant on the outside... The pipes underneath seemed fine. I should have checked more thoroughly but its freeezing outside and I could not feel my hands after 1/2 hour of searching.

What to do.... ??

Answer:
you should always check the car with the engine running.....after a long run prefereably, so that the coolant is hot, and the pipes are soft. also the water system is pressurised then.

Subject: headgasket?

Question:
hi there, thanks for the help with the previous question they help alot, next probelem is my five turbo, im running a t25 turbo and it runs 13psi boost and my temp usually runs under 1st digit turned off and has a max of 26psi but i turned it up to 21psi racing a skyline sun b4 last and the temp stayed in usual place after racing came up to 1st digit as usual when sat stil but cut out, i undid the oil filler cap and had a nice mayo colour so has the head taken off and skimmed v.little so the head still had loads left on it new comp head gasket with uprated head bolts gotthe car bak on the road last sun drove it steady making sure everythings fine so last nite as it was dry enough for trakion i turned up the boost to21psi again to race my mate in dawsons cover r5gtt ok 1,2,3 then steam every where out the exhaust, turbo gauge started ready 1/2 on std gauge all power gone pulled over and mayo mixture again. i did the work myself so everything was done correctly, there are no split pipes ect, yet to strip it down to see if gasket or liner but didnt no if there was anything i can do to let me keep the boost at 21psi without blowing up ? also pistons and lines are only 3000 miles old.

Answer:
""im singing in the rain, what a glorious feeling, im happy again""
""when you set the carb up, did u enlarge then main jet, cos if u forgot, mayo's what u get!""

basically buddy, have u uprated the carb to match the increased boost levels u are pushing?

Subject: Car has suddenly started to overheat (PART II)

Question:
Mr Wizard,

I have checked the pipes and I can't see any apparent leaks from any of the hoses that you mentioned. When i squeeze the top coolant pipe that runs to the top of the radiator i can hear a hissing noise that sounds like its coming out of the bleed valve. I screwed that in.

It must be leaking from somewhere as thee is still coolant on the rocker cover and there were a few drops on the back of the drivers side headlight. Do you think my water pump/waterpump gasket is gone? There seemed to be quite a bit of coolant on the black pot (oil seperator?) that sits next to the water pump. When I took it off, it seemed like the jubilee clip was not even connected anymore... There is still a fair amount of coolant left in system.

I'm confused, can you shed some light on the subject?

Answer:
has yer bleed avlve got a rubber o-ring on it?
or has it broken where it attaches to the pipe?

Subject: torsion bar

Question:
how to lower torsion bar?do i need special tools?or is it possible to take the whole axle off a ren 5 that is allready lowed?will it spring back so it cant be used?

Answer:
you need a slide hammer to remove the torsion bar.
u can remove the whole rear trailing arm, and replace with one off another car, but thats A REAL BALL ACHE!
you can also put spacers under certain bolts that hold the ceam to the chassis, to angle the arms into the body....but its not really recommended!
besides this, im pretty sure theres an article on the site about it.

Subject: hard pistons

Question:
Hi wiz me again, my stupid buddy says that my piston would be a lot better if thay were ceramic coated and wire ringd, is this true or is he talking a load of bulderdash, there is a big powered GTT TURBO in max power and it had 323 bhp at the wheels, he had conrods made buy a company call billet or billit, do you know of them if not do you know of somebody that will uprate the standrd ones

CHEERS a lot

Answer:
ceramic coating is a good idea for the gt turbo, as its supposed to stop detonation damage to the piston tops - and also stop the piston top gettin too hot.
wire ringing is also a good idea, as at high boost pressure the head gasket does take a bit of a pounding from the increased cylinder pressures.
323bhp at wheels......take with big pinch of salt, unless thats with NOS and a huge turbo/cam etc etc and doesnt stop revving until 10k.

now this mysterious company called 'billet'
i heard they also make dump valves, the bodies of bleed valves, also cranks etc etc......
im actually pullin yer plums mate, 'billet' is a term meaning a block of metal, which is then machined to form the part u desire.
i dunno of anyone who does the uprated ones.....try asking a tuner or QED....cos they build Lotus engines you know.

Subject: headgasket?

Question:
hi there again ref to my question 3599 yes ive upgraded my carb to a grp a with a 150 jet and liner no. 3 between 2-3 is where the problem is nice little crack down the side of it! still dont under stand why this happened as they arent that old?

Answer:
ok, your piston top has expanded in the liner and then cracked it. im assuming there are what appear to be wipe marks on your piston??? if not, take the piston out of the liner and check again!
you could have leaky valve seats, i.e not ground in proper;y, as this can cause boost and fuel to leak past the valve and cause overheating of the piston.
failing that buy water injection.

Subject: crank and bearings

Question:
if my bearing are on the way out could this cause any damage to the crank. i have had a noisy bottom end for the last month or so and i have been told its more than likely the bearings. im planning to get them changed soon but could there be any other damage?

Answer:
it can damage the crank, but your main concern is that you loose oil pressure, and hence feck your turbo!!!
also if the bearing does decide to fall apart, then the bits usually sh4g the oil pump, and also the turbo.
I AM TALKING FROM EXPERIENCE HERE!!! :-(
