Subject: Clutch Pedal Travel Question: Car's been off the road for a long time. While sorting out a few things, also decided to change the clutch cable for a new gen renault one. The clutch operates fine, bites quite low but no other problems. However have at least an inch of free play on the pedal before anything happens. Feels as if the self adjusitng mechanisim not working the way it should - do they ever? Any ideas. Answer: yeah ...try buying a new clutch pedal assembly...or even try fiddling with the mechanism yerself....this could move it into the correct position.....usually stamping a few times on the pedal works. |

Subject: gt tuning in car boost Question: hello wiz, i have recently accuired an in car boost controler and spider valve [gt tuning] off another car, but thats all. i know the kit usually comes with an uprated overboost switch and larger jets? where can i get these and how hard are they to fit? is there anything else i need to do to the car other than that and a re-touque? cheers Answer: all the kit does is turn the screw in the end of the overboost switch, so that it ups the level at which it cuts in..... or you could just leave one of the wires off...if u catch my drift ;-) u can get jets from any tuners, or even make yer own, as long as u aren't afraid to take things apart and put them back together again, then taking the carb apart aint a big task. i wouldn't even bother with the retorque!!! |

Subject: hissing noise Question: Hi please could u help with this strange problem. I have a hissing noise, sounds like its coming from near the spark plug area or distributor somewhere. The noise is a rugular hiss, maybe 2 hisses per seconds - not constant his. Ive checked to see whether the plugs are in properly with the right torque setting and if the leads are on. What can it be?????? any ideas,. Could it be headgasket or something major?? Answer: spray some soapy water down the front of your head!!!- whilst the car is running.... i think you'll find that the spark plug in question will bubble away happily!!! im very very sure its a sparkplug! get some copper grease and smear it on the thread, and retighten...it should help seal it!!! |

Subject: Ecu ""seconds up, round 3, ding ding"" Question: hi mate, me again!! I have found that the new ecu I have fitted as well as my original, both cause the engine to miss when the vaccume pipe is connected to the ecu diagphram!!!! when the vac pipe is removed there is a definate change for the better in running throughout the rpm range? does this mean i have two faulty ECUs? or is there another factor that could be causing the miss/ecu to fail? can the standard ecu diagphram take 20 psi without problems? oh er cheers adam ![]() Answer: ok, with the vac removed the ecu advances the timing...are u sure u aint got yer dizzy cap out of sink with yer cam or summat stoopid like that? |

Subject: HISSSSSSSSSSSSSS Question: Ow almighty Wiz ![]() Quicky then.....when I pull away hard shifting from 1st to 2nd and putting my foot down I hear a hissing noise when I'm going higher in the revs (i'm running abour 1,3 bars (bigger I-C, 2 GT Tuning Dvs flowed head and tub. manifold, bored out elbow and bigger downpipe + exhaust, however downpipe has quite a big dent in iot because of non fitment with tub manifold). In 3rd gear when I put in my foot down, no hissing at all. What can it be what can it be? split Diaphragm? My eternal thanks and blessings oh GREAT one Answer: it could be the dump valves leaking...try blocking them off. it could be the exhaust feed from your incar bleed valve..... it really kinda depends where this hissing noise is coming from! |

Subject: Not fast Question: Hi wizard, i hear a lot of people can rev nicely to 6k or 6.5k with a smaller turbo than mine. My car feels it loses power at about 5.9 k and i have a t28 rollerbearing turbo from k-tec. shouldn't it be good for high end as it is a big turbo, do u think my fuel pump needs replacing or something else as i dont think it feel right. Answer: yeah, sounds suspiciously like you're being starved of fuel!!! id uprate yer fuel pump, and maybe get yer float chamber jet enlarged. u may even need some of yer jets enlarging too..... |

Subject: Not fast Question: And another thing, I know my bottom end is nocking slightly.. do u think this is the reason its not pulling hard at the top end.. Answer: well, well well....so your bottom end is knocking, and you can't pull at the top??? i suggest a tight pair of 'Y' fronts....as this holds everything in place. you may even find it easier to pull hard on yer top end with these on ;-) i think that your loose bottom, end, aint gonna cause lack of pull at the top. Like i said b4, i think its cos yer carb aint 'squirting' enough 'juice' into the engine, whilst you're at full throttle :-P ho ho ho |

Subject: hesitating and clutch Question: hello sonny. when revin up or pulling away from tickover my car seems to hesitate before the revs pick up any ideas? also the other night i picked a fight with an evo, as i changed from 2nd to 3rd it wouldnt go in gear. now it wont go in any gear with the engine runnin! if i start it in gear i can pull away as normal but still cant change gear, whats the chances of the thrust bearing going through the pressure plate? Answer: sounds like yer accelerator pump is sticking on yer carb. - this causes stutter before take off sounds like you've fecked yer clutch or yer box...id take it apart and see if the clutch is blotto, if now, then suspect yer box!!! |

Subject: oil leek Question: Have owned my 5 for a couple of months now,and every time i switch it off,and it does'nt matter how long it has been running for,oil drips from the lowest point of the engine for a about 10 minutes after. There is a lot of oil around the oil pressure sender and the pipe above it,and i have had the sump gasket & drain plug checked & they are fine. But it does'nt leek while the engine is running....help please....my driveway is looking a bit worse for wear. Answer: take off your turbo oil feed pipe, and take it apart. then clean thoroughly and and reassemble, using ptfe tape on all threads, making sure you do them all up tight!- then inspect the two copper washers either side of the banjo union, at the one end of the feed. these can also be dodgy! - ake sure you screw back into block tight!!! also suspect the oil pipe that goes to the rad, where the rubber pipe is crimped into the metal sheath, they can leak here too, which is close to where u are talking about. |

Subject: oil feed pipe Question: helloo, i have bought a second hand standard turbo to replace my standard unit which is mixing oil/water but the top oil feed pipe does not fit into the turbo, the hole is a fraction to small, do u know why and how can i fix, thx. Answer: do u have a ph1 or a ph2 turbo on it? - cos the ph 1 has an adapter and a large nut, whereas the ph2 has a nut that just screws straight into the turbo core. you could of course been sold a hybrid....but even these usually have an adapter with them. u may have to speak to a turbo remanufacturer, or a tuner, to get an adapter...u will probably need to get an idea of the thread type too from 'somewhere' :-) |

Subject: Laods of Oil in Water! Question: Hi Wiz, My car recently went BOOM with smoke from the exhaust and emptied itself of water because of too higher boost, i think. Replaced the head gasket but after a few days the water turned to mayonaise all through the system. I have since flushed the system (messy job) and re-built the top of the engine, replacing the head with one which has been tested and skimmed. Just took the car for a drive after re-torquing the head bolts and the oil has again dumped itself into the cooling system, but not turned to mayonnaise yet. The turbo is good and there isn't any mess on the oil filler cap, so what else could be causing this? Is it most likely going to be one of the liners or seals, or is there anything else it could be that can be tested before I take the engine apart again? Please help. I bought the car and only got to drive it for half a day! Thanks. Russ. Answer: lol! well, you could of disturbed the liner seals, when u ripped the head off. what else it likely to be, especially if u changed the head and its still doin it! you did check the liners for splits didn't you ;-) |

Subject: losing boost Question: Hello again wizard, i seem to be asking a lot of questions nowadays, (bad time for my car at the mo), I have a slight boost loss. When i set my in car boost to where 18 psi normally is, the car boosts to 18 but then drops to about 16-15 psi. I haven't changed the spring in the actuator yet, but i have a feeling its not that. I have a slight leak coming from the joint underneath the turbo connecting to the manifold, cos i can feel it with my hand when the car is cold - it slightly blows(its not cracked). Do you think it could be this?? or maybe something else?? Answer: yeah, it could be this, as the exhaust need to flow into the turbo to power it....leaks mean loss of exhuast to the turbo!- hence loss of power. also check manifold, turbo, intercooler and pipework for leaks. |

Subject: Baffling the sump Question: is there much point in baffling the sump if there is how do u do it? Answer: the point of baffling the sump is to stop the oil surging away from the oil pump pick up point, and hence fecking the turbo and bottom end of the car. to baffle the sump try getting a renault 11/9 sump, as these should be baffled, and u can copy it and transfer it across...with some welding.... |

Subject: pistons n liners Question: who could supply me with steel liners? what is the std. piston to bore clearance? would thay require honing to suit different brands of aftermarket piston eg i have heard that some run different tolerances . all info would be graetfull thanks colin Answer: well, phone around the tuners and ask!!!- i know one of them does steel liners :-) as for what the standard clearnace is, this maybe mentioned in haynes manual...but u are correct that certain piston/ liner combo's have tighter tolerances than others...eg i know tarabusi pistons and liners are supposed to be quite 'tight'. |

Subject: top mount stuff Question: wsup wizard, got another prob. I will eventually be changing my suspension to phase 2 components because i blame my funny steering problems to the phase 1 geometry to when the car is low. I was thinking could the funny steering be because of this problem:- (bit hard to explain, cos i don't know what the part of the car is called) (I have coilovers aswell) Basically where you can see the top of the suspension coming out of the top bit x(chasi? i dunno) the bit when you open the bonnet, the part where the topmounts fit in has propably been hit hard by the shocks and has bent it upwards a little bit. do u think this could be the problem of my steering going everywhere or the camber alignment of phase 1 components being shit? and can bent body be fixed? where from, how, how difficult, how much Thanks and have u been to OZ? Answer: yes mate ive been to OZ and back with bleedin question! if both shock towers are identical then u aint got nothin to worry about. if one is bent then you have got probs...but i dont know how much it is to fix, as this is a structural part of the car!! if the car is running on the inside edge of the tyres than they do 'go everywhere', you need to get camber adjusters else it'll keep happening. :-( |

Subject: rough idling Question: Hi wiz,had a problem with the 5 for awhile now goes as follows On tickover about 800rpm seems like theres a misfire,on boost theres a whining noise from the turbo. I,ve just replaced distributor, rotor arm and leads Think i,ve got a leak on the vacuum circuit which is causing rough tickover and noise on boost? If so whats the easiest way to track it down(don,t fancy taking off all pipes cos i,m a lazy git) Answer: sounds likely, but im afraid to say, u are gonna have to get off yer a*** and get looking at pipework!!! its the only way!!! check to see if yer dump valve is actually sealing, and that vacuum is able to build up on the non boost side of it!- then work your way back to the manifold and the ecu!...then check all boost pipes for other leaks whilst u are at it! |
