Subject: Cuttin out! Question: hi there wizard! first time i post a message on here! anyways sometimes when driving along in lower gears the car stutters and then i would lose all power for about 1 quarter of a second, then the car will burst back into life again, this normally happens when pulling off in 1st and sometimes just after i shift into second! i think its got something to do with the fuel filter or maybe the fuel lines, could u please help! alex!!! Answer: check yer +ve feed off the battery aint come loose and is touching the back of the engine. failing that it could be that yer accelerator pump is blocked on the carb, and needs freeing off. also check yer fuel filter though...maybe leads and cap.. |

Subject: clicking!!!!! Question: hello O wise one. my problem is my turbo has just started making a funny clicking noise. when it is ticking over and you slightly touch the throttle it clicks what do ya reckon that is....... Answer: you've probably got a leak from where the turbo joins the manifold, or u got fred astaire stuck in yer downpipe.... could also be leaking through where the exhaust housing bolts to the turbo core. |

Subject: Oil cooler thermostat Question: When the engine goes back in my car I'm planning on using a seperate oil cooler (which I already have), should I be using an in line thermostat, or does it not really matter? Chris Answer: yeah u should, else the oil will get too cold and not be within its working range!!!- hence it could screw yer engine up!!! |

Subject: Rad prob or not? Question: hi wiz, i just bought a gtt 5 and i think the guy i bought it from rewired the radiator and anti perc switches and relays, but not properly, but i cant find an original wiring diagram for my car, the reason i think its not right is cos when the temp gauge reaches almost 2/3rds the rad fan cuts in but only after what i think is the anti perc relay clicks on and of about 2-3 times. could you shead any light on this for me? thanks karl Answer: try this link! http://www.rtoc.org/library/file.asp?id=2547 lo' and behold!- its the wiring diagram!!! |

Subject: freezing nights Question: hello wizz i think i asked you last year about when it gets really cold lately at night my car feels like it is struggling for fuel.......with the colder nights coming up i think i need to sort this......... you asked if i had a double capasity alloy intercooler, which i have......... to fix this problem would it hurt to place a piece of card infront of the intercooler to help.....or not.... cuz my guess it the freezing cold air is freezing the carb, so the air to fuel is not right......thus causing the car to judder some times. Answer: yeah, this is true, but thats why u got the water feed in and out of the carb/manifold to help vapourise the fuel!!!!- do u have this on yer car, cos sometimes people take it out of the water system!!!! |

Subject: low boost Question: hiya i have got a prob. i have a evc boost controller and it was working ok then whent to bed and i only have 5psi of boost now before it was at actuator 5 psi and on evc low was 8psi high was 12psi .but it does not matter what i do now i cant get anymore boost than 5psi even if i move the actuator bar it still does nothing to give more boost .does it mean that my actuator is weak as i have cheaked every thing else please help cheers Answer: interested name, could be read two ways....'bigal' ;-) anyway.... it could be that yer actuator is knackered, or that a pipe is blocked or summat, so it may be worthwhile to take the bleed system completely apart and clean it out. it could also be that u got a leak in yer dump valve diaphragm, or some other boost hose or summat, which would effectively leak off boost!!!! |

Subject: hi wiz Question: hi there wiz, think its time i got some decent leads for the engine, which ones do u recommend and where can i get hold of them from, also do u know where i can get a subaru sounding exhaust from?? cheers wiz and 4 the last bit of advice! Answer: well.... try demon tweeks or someplace like that! - remember 'even' Helfrauds sell silicone leads too!!! as for the subaru exhaust, you just need to get a larger turbo downpipe, and a reasonably free flowing exhaust. a large turbo and cam also help.... i say this because a large exhaust housing on a turbo causes less back pressure and a more lairy cam increases air flow thru the exhaust. hence the 'subaru' noise. p.s..its cos out exhaust headers are different lengths, this is why they sound similar to scobbies...;-) |

Subject: shocks Question: Hi wizard, i would like to know if phase 2 front shock absorber would fit my phase 1 with phase 1 top mounts or do i have to change the mounts. Im thinking of getting rid of my avo coilover cos there s*** and changing to phase 2 shocks cos i hear they have better geometry. Also i have got the car quite low and the streering is really light and moves around on uneven surfaces, i think its cos of the shocks and camber alignment. Do you think if i do as above it will make it better or not and go for phase 1 shocks again? Thank you! Answer: if u fit ph 2 shocks u need ph2 top mounts, else they throw the geometry right out!!! if you need to sort the camber ut you can actually buy special top mounts to adjust the camber..or redrill the original bolts holes!!! |

Subject: Gearbox TinTags Question: I have a number of G-Boxes with diffrent numbers stamped on there tin tags. One has JB3034, another has JB3014 The others have no tin tags. The cars that these G-boxes that came out of span from years 1987 - 1989 I know JB3034 came out of a G-plate Raidar, and was the orriginal With these numbers in mind, Is there any diffrence? Did all the boxes have diffrent tin tags to reprecent diffrent years?? I could be talking a load of hot air. Cheers wiz man... Answer: usually JB3014 are from ph1 R5's and have a lower gear ratios than the JB3032 which are found in ph2 R5's.....i've never heard of the JB3034, but do u know for sure that the car came with this 'box?- it could ave been changed... there are also JB3S04 which are renault reconditioned jobbies.... there is a list of these somewhere, im sure!!! |

Subject: shocks Question: Where can i get them top mounts to sort out the camber alignment, oh and do the camber adjustment bolts that some tuners sell actually work? Thank you lots Answer: apparently the camber adjust bolts do work, else they wouldn't be able to sell them now, would they ;-) try demon tweeks...they are made by TAS i think. |

Subject: Raising Boost Question: Alright Wiz?! Looking to raise my boost pressure, can you adjust the actuator without the need for gagues/dials? Is it possible to just turn the nut and check how things go on my boost gague? Sorry for such a lame question...only had the car a month! Subject: poor performance Question: hi wizard. my sounds like it runs okay.it has new plugs leads ecu cap and arm.also new diaphrams for the d/v.but i can only get just over a 100 mph out of her.why could this be.any idears where to start looking. ie. exhaust leak, actuator spring too stiff, bad pipeing from the actuator to carb.it seems to come on boost about 3500 rpm with a t2 hybrid i have checked for boost leaks from turbo to carb Answer: try seeing if the turbo is actually turning properly, as it may be seizing when it gets hot. failing this u have a serious lack of fuel at the top end. u may need to strip yer carb again, and check the enrichment circuit, to see if the jets are blocked. could also be yer fuel pressure regulator, not feeding the carb properly, but thats very unlikely. |

Subject: Breaking Nipples Question: Gonna be bleeding the brakes at the weekend and i want to know if i do start snapping nipples, whats the best temporary measure to stop them pissing out fluid? Answer: i suffer from snappin nipples in the cold too, especially if someone is tweekin them too damn hard! infact i always find that they snap before they even have chance to turn even a fraction, hence no leaky leaky, but i would suggest spraying liberally with 'fluid' ;-) of the release -ing ;-) variety to make sure the thread is free to turn. if it does start leaking and snap, u are boogered! |

Subject: Weak spark Question: Wiz After a disapointing day at Well lane, I have discovered that my car develops a weak spark across all 4 cylinders when the rpms are held at any point causing the engine to miss. The bloke at well lane says that there is a high resistance in the HT side of the ignition circuit, this was shown on the test equipment. I have since changed the ECU, plugs(ngk VX), HT leads, and the rotor arm and cap are new!!! it still misfires! (also the fueling ok, 150 main 0.9 corrector). The engine was sent away for reconditioning etc and has had a vernier timing wheel fitted. The concern that i have is that the distributor may have been fitted incorrectly (ie a few teeth out on the spline) is this possible? so as the car is reved and the timing advances the rotor arm effectively misses the contact in the cap causing the spark to jump, therefore causing this high resistance?????? yet there is no sign of this on the contacts of the cap???? also the vac advance has been tested and is ok??? any ideas mate cos im flumped and well gutted? ![]() cheers Adam Answer: ok, maybe im bein a pleb here, but i think u are answering yer own questions. the vac is ok on the ecu, but did u test the bloody coil pack itself? they do break down, they do go wrong, try a spare, and i reckon it may be sorted. after all, u have allegedly checked everything else! don't worry about the cam timing and the ignition timing....but if u are, read haynes...it tells u how to set it all up :-) also u may find chopping one of the legs off the dizzy is neccessary for that real fine adjustment, but i never told u that *lol* |

Subject: about to rip my head off Question: my r5 went bang not long ago white smoke from exhaust oil everywhere all over the engine, head gasket was blown, so had head skimmed and put new gasket in, the oil has seemed to stop drippping from the engine somewhere but still white smoke the water is gone in about five minutes, plus when i rev it hard a brown sludge is shooting out the breather pipe which goes into the induction kit elbow, all the pipes from turbo to intercooler to carb have a gray sludge in them, the oil has gone like mayonaise please help do i need new head, turbo Answer: sounds like u could of lifted the liner seals and be causing the water in the block to leak into the sump..hence why all the mayo take the head off....get it pressure checked.-just incase. take the sump off and lift the liners out the top along with the pistons. then replace the thin seals on the bottom of the liners. |

Subject: LED light conversion Question: Hi Wiz, My project R5 is now taking shape: and as part of that - I'm all of the rear clusters welded over, side repeaters flushed in, and also the front indicated smoothed over - and replacing the lot with LEDs.... a lot like Jamie Shaw did to his R5... Any idea how you do it? And also, any idea about the legalities of it- do the lights have to be visable from a certain distance?? Help! Answer: ermmm....emma !- you really do ask the flippin hardest questions! id find out the legality of it first, by speaking to your local cop shop. then if they do say its a go-er, then u gotta start looking at extending the wings under the front lights....similar to the NOVA GSi, when compared to the NOVA GTe. - either that or extend the grill. as for the rear clusters, wouldn't it be easier to rip the plastic covering off the original lights and get some sheet metal and bend it over the original 'base'. the problem is that the lenses bend both ways....hence bending the metal to fit will be problematic. welding may yield a better finish, especially if filled properly too. the side repeaters are childs play. :-) |

Subject: Cup mod with in-car controller and a bleedvalve to set the MAX boost???? Question: Hello again, Whizz. Looking to buy a 3-way bleed valve to coincide with my in cat boost controller to control the MAX boost levels. There must be a way in doing this. The in-car is from GTTuning and it's a two way valve. one to release the air in to the atmosphare and the other to control the boost level which gets plumbed to the actuator pipe. The three way bleedvalve has two outer pipes that control the boost and the one that releases to the atmosphare I've had a look at some of the owners cars to see how thay have arranged the pipe work, but most have diffrent ways in doing so. Could I use a three way bleedvalve or not? How would i root the pipe work for this to work. Thanks Rinkydink Answer: no need for the three way valve all you need to do is set up the min boost you need, by adjusting the wastegate accuator rod length . then add a jet to the leaked off preasure that the incar lets out thus ristricting max boost |

Subject: Performance Chip (Clio 16v) Question: I'm looking to get a performance chip for my 16v Clio. How much BHP does it add? How much will it cost me and where could I order it from? Any side affects to getting it? Do you recommend it? Answer: right, for starters we have a problem...the word 'performance' and 'clio 16V' in the same sentence.... how much bhp will a chip add?- not as much as buying a R5 GTT and turning the boost up.... it'll cost u dearly if u gonna try and race a tuned R5, cos it'll wup yer ass... the side effects...hmmmm, look in the autotrader, the side effects from even owning a clio 16v are that they are actually cheaper to buy than R5's now!!! - hence u have lost money! i recommend selling the car asap! - get a 5, or even sticking a r5 gtt lump in it... hope i've been of some 'guidance'! :OD |

Subject: clutch & g-box probs when hot Question: Got a problem Wizard Only use my 5 a couple of times every few months because I work away, parked it up for 6 month & then gave it two 30 min runs both times after it warmed up I gave it some(plenty of boost & high revs)& it would sometimes not go into 1st gear at lights & would sometimes not go into gear when changing up the box at speed(high revs). Had 2 take my foot off clutch & re-apply 2 get a gear Problems have only started since I left car sat in garage for months at a time. Then 2 month later used the 5 again 4 a week with the same problems, loss of gears after driving the car hard, to the point of having 2 pull over & after a few mins having to turn engine off, put into 1st start engine to get a gear. Even had gear selector ball joint pop out of the g box(3 times) because of trying 2 force into a gear Clutch only 12k old, newish pedal assembly, reno cable. Advice needed because I only get my hands on the 5 for a week every few months, I have a few ideas just want 2 check I´m thinkin along the right lines Cheers MAT Answer: ok, check your engine mounts, they could be knackered. also replace your gearbox oil.... or it could be just that your gearbox is on its way out....- still could be clutch tho! also...is the pinch bolt underneath the gear selector actually tight? you hav to get under the car to see it...it could be moving a bit??? |

Subject: actuator !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Question: i have a strange soun d coming from the engine when it reaches full boost.its like a squeaking/sucking sound.it goes away when i back of the accelorator.i thought it was the ecu so i changed it but there was still no joy.its exactly the same.does the actuator have a diaphram,if so could this be the sound of the diaphram if it has a split in it???? also this could be why i have so much turbo lag.i have put exhaust paste on the turbo to manifold and downpipe.just need to replace the spring bolts on the downpipe because the springs are verry loose Answer: exhaust leak on either exhaust turbine housing of turbo, where it joins the body, or the exhaust manifold gasket....usually the bit nearest the turbo blows. - this is what u can hear.. |
