Subject: Engine Question: Hi Wizz I brought my renault off of a friend of mine when he had it originally it had a big turbo on it and was running around 180 bhp since then the head gasket went and PTS was due to fix it but unfortunatly whilst it was stripped and in there yard everything was in the boot and some little F*** broke into it and stole the head, turbo the lot PTS apparently replaced everything as it was but the turbo looks smaller than before when i took it back up to PTS to be tuned after they tuned it i asked what i could turn it up to on a standard turbo and he seemed surprised when i said i think it has got a standard turbo on there. I know they did replace some things like the 135 main jet and so forth, could they have replaced the turbo with a T2 Hybrid if so would this produce much more power than the standard T2? and be the same size?. Is there any way of telling what they have replaced it with? because they can't find the paper work as it was a while ago. What could i expect from my car power wise i have a charge cooler rejetted carb, uprated head gasket and bolts, Comp D/V,Reduced Temp Fan switch and Thermo, Silicon Air hoses, Pipercross cone filter, Full straigth through 2 1/4 Devil exhaust system with a 4.5 inch tail pipe. I am currently running 12 psi through my turbo. Answer: you need to take the turbo off and look at the A/R stamps that are on the compressor and turbine housings. these will tell u if its a standard turbo or not. at 12psi i'd take a guess and say 140-150bhp. |

Subject: Water and oil Question: Right, I was getting oil in my water. I thought it was fixed but then I changed my mind.... so went and got my rad pressure tested and they said it was fine, so whipped my head off and I would put money on that it wasn't torqued down properly(ans no I didn't do it ; -). All the bolts didn't feel as tight as each other and they were worst at the right hand end of the head as you look at it from the front. Do you think that could let oil in to the water? There wasn't a massive amount of oil and i thought it was worst when i drove hard. She always ran cool on the move and didn't feel like there was any power loss. Do I put it back together with a new HG and do the jop proper and hope for the best? Soz bout the essay. Thank you! Answer: yes, but get the head pressure tested first. remember haynes says 60Nm per head bolt, alot of people i know do it to 70Nm. don't go above 90Nm though P

Subject: Rocker Shaft Question: just a quick one, i need to re-tap the rocker shaft pedestal threads in the head, can i remove the rocker shaft assembly without disturbing the head? i.e remove the circlips and slide the shaft out? ive removed the circlips before but the shaft wont slide out beyond the circlip grooves? Answer: you may have to drain the water out of the block from the 11mm drain plug located under the waterpump near the back edge of the block. then undo the edge 4 head bolts and remove the rocker assembly completely. do what you have to do, the tighten it all back down again, but put 5Nm more into the head bolts, so they actually compress the gasket ;-) |

Question: hi wiz, i got a problem with my cooling system. when i start car from cold it gets really hot temp gauge goes right 2 top and fan dont kick in. if i leave it running for a min or 2 the fan then kicks in and engine temp is below the 2/3 mark. what you reckon it is a faulty thermostat?? also the top hose going the the radiator is cold compared 2 the other hoses. i have opened the bleed screws and just coolant comin out so dont think theres any air in the system?? Answer: change the thermostat. also check the hose from the manifold to the waterpump for leaks, when this goes the temp goes skt high then drops suddenly. |

Subject: Bleed valve or actuator Question: Hi Wizz I have a bleed valve on my car and i wondered if i was to turn up the boost would i do it at the bleed valve ( If so how much do you think i should turn it) OR at the actuator ( If so how much do you think i should turn it) Answer: erm, ok, am i missing the point here? - u have a bleed valve in the car (hopefully connected to the boost circuit) so why would u wanna turn the boost up via the actuator? you would turn yer incar bleed valve with yer fore finger and thumb, approx 1/4turn, depending on how its been set up?!!!? what exactly are you tryin todo? |

Subject: loud knocking Question: hiya mate ive just fitted a set of gaz coilovers everything is alright but there is a loud knocking noise coming from the front drivers side when i hit a bump ive checked all the nuts and bolts and they all are tight any ideas mate Answer: if the noise wasnt there before you fitted the coil overs i would look at the way there fitted. you possibly have got the top mount on wrong try hitting the tread of the tyre with a club hammer (with the car on all four) see if you can repduce the knock so you can find it |

Subject: Bleed Valve or Actuator part Deux Question: Hi Wizz sorry to be a pain Well i want to turn my boost up to one bar (14.5psi) but i don't know a great deal about turbos. I have an under bonnet bleed valve and wasn't sure how to turn the boost up. The reason i asked wether the cup mod would affect the bleed valve was because from the diagram on the cup web site it looks like the pipe you disconnect from the actuator looks like the one the bleed valve is connected to? Do you think 1 bar should be ok to run. I have a charge cooler and bigger jets in the carb and an uprated head gasket and bolts? Many Thanks Answer: ok, just a quicky...do u have 1 or 2 'ports' on you actuator? if u have one port, run the pipe to the bleed valve, and then from the bleed valve to the carb top. if u have two, do the above, but leave the port closest to the rear of the car open to air! i.e plumb yer s*** into the front facing port! 1bar is ok.- u can actually run this on a completely standard carb if u wish. have fun ;-) |

Subject: clutch adjustment Question: hi, i have recently fitted a new clutch and pedal, what is the correct way to set the pedal adjuster up cause my pedal has a very low biting point and thuds into gear if i release the peddle 2 quickly. Also i am stil trying 2 find out why i have oil in my header tank my latest test was to disconnect the water feed to the turbo i have driven around like this for about a week now and there doesnt seem to be anymore oil in water, have u heared of the turbo letting oil into the water and is it ok to run the car around with the turbo water feed disconnected (it keeps the car much cooler than b4!)? Last of all ever since i have had the head gasket replaced about 6months ago my 5 seems down on power although i only drove it a couple of times b4 i had the gasket replaced so i cant be sure, also since there seems to be a boost leak noise i can hear it clearly in the car while driving, its not the dv the gauge pipe or anything obvious and it hasnt got any wourse, so whatever it is the hole or crack isnt getting any bigger, its not the sound of my cone filter either, could it be related to the head in someway? i have tightened all the nuts up on the manifolds a couple of months ago, i had to put the gasket the right way round also, stupid mechanics! is there any tests i can do to find the leek? the noise sounds related to the dv in someway cause when i put my foot down it blows and when i let off the dv hisses like it should but i have removed the dv and the leek is still there when accelerating, its getting really annoying now cause i know the car has more potential but the 0-60 time is only about 10-11 seconds and theres no real kick when the turbo whindes up (no lag which is strange) although when i turn my bv around to produce about 14psi performance is alittle better and i can just about keep up with a uno lol! sorry for long winded questions but can u help??? Answer: ok...here goes! assuming you have put in a volvo 480 clutch, then u will have a very low biting point!- this is the nature of that particular clutch. you can get turbos cracking internally, and u can run water cooled turbos without any water if u wish, but u have to change the oil alot more regular- ie. every 3000miles instead of every 6000!, also im not sure whether the turbos are actually designed so they can work without the water cooling, ie not enuff internal cooling abilities! as for you boost leak....first of all take off ALL the boost pipes and check to see if they are split, paying CAREFUL attention to where the jubilee clips squeeze the pipes! then get some white spirit, and pour it into the intercooler, slosh it all about, and then check the joins on the intercooler for any leaks...i.e you may have burst the intercooler...can also check this by blowing into it and covering exit hole up! also suspect the strap that keeps the overboost sensor in position, as this is prone to leakage too. also check the carb top for leaks. then take off the dumpvalve, and block the remaining hole with a screwdiver...this will eliminate any dumpvalve problem! hope this all helps! also check spark plugs are screwed in properly, by running the car and spraying WD40 over the sparkplugs...bubbles will appear if they are leaking!!! |

Subject: blue smoke on overrun Question: Hi wiz, my car throws blue smoke out on overrun and overrun only, the engine has been rebuilt with new pistons rings and liners, new ported head and seals etc. The whole breather system including restrictors has been checked for blockages and it has had a brand new turbo. I've rebuilt this engine again with brand new parts as before at great cost and still i have the exact same fault. Any ideas before i set fire to it. Answer: Blue smoke on overrun implies leaking valve stem seals. Check they haven't worked their way loose. On overrun, the pressure in the cylinders and inlet manifold is significantly lower than that in the rocker cover. So any oil sitting around the valve stems will be sucked down between the stem and the guide if the seals aren't there. Wiz. |

Subject: cooling Question: dear wiz, My perk fan never comes on, the rad fan never comes on and the temp gauge reads about 3/4 hot, i want to put a manual switch so that i can run the fan when it gets a little hot. My oil pressure gauge is sky high and the oil warning light comes on as wll!!! Can you deliver me from evil hottess Answer: ok, check the fuse to the perc fan, then suspect the temp switches that operate it! check the rad fan switch is actually knackered first, by bridging it, this should cause the fan to come on, which means the rad fan switch is blotto! if the fan still don't come on, suspect the relay lurking around the front of the alternator area! the oil pressure gauge is probably knackered. unusually high reading is alot better than very low *lol*. you may also wanna check to see if yer thermostat actualy opens....it always helps! |

Subject: Vernier pulley Question: While The engine is out of my car, I'm planning on putting either a Piper 270 or 285 cam into it. Should I be getting the Vernier Pulley too, or is it not really worthwhile? Cheers Answer: it is worthwhile, but it depends how much £££ u got. ive fitted with and without to cars, and all perform well. but this asumes the grinding process has been spot on, so the vernier pulley is better for adjustment... also even though it says its a vernier pulley, it AINT AT ALL!- there's no fancy cossie style markings on it!- u gotta buy a protractor and do the dirty work yerself!!! |

Subject: carb overhaul Question: hello wiz, my carb was leaking so i decided to have a go myself with an overhaul kit, got me some advice and an overhaul kit ,carb cleaner ect and made sure every thing went back clean with the right gasket in place, now i fitted nice clean carb back to car and leaks cured but the car wont tick over without choke ,and unless i keep revin it it just dies does this ring any bells ,any help appreciated. Answer: one of two things might have happened here ile give you the easy one first remove the idle jet and clean it again (thats the fat brass screw on drivers side of the carb) if that makes no change have a look at the idle mixture screw. wot can happen is if its screwed in to much it can sheer of the end and block the idle circuit. take screw out and see if there is a tinny bit of the screww left in the hole. or it could be that the idle mixture just needs setting up |

Subject: carb jets Question: Hi WiZ I am currently running in my new motor, coverd 450 miles, its had just about everything done to the head and block ect, thing is I have had problems with the plugs (NGK VX's) getting very crapped up every 60 miles or so and have been so bad that is has caused the car to fail on me a number times, I have a group a carb that has been re-jetted but dont know what size the jets are as they have been drilled out (original markings) I have farted with the idle mixture it makes no change to running! I will (after running) in run up to 20PSI (adjustable) would the fact that I am only taking the engine to 3000rpm at 10psi make the plugs soot up, because the carb is set to fuel the engine at 20psi at higher rpm? oh yer I also get a bit of backfire under engine breaking! What Jetset up should the carb have to run happy at 20psi mate? cheers Adam Answer: u need to get some drill bits and check the sizes of the jets. if you are running it in, and KNOW FOR SURE you arent gonna boost over 7psi, then change the main jet to a 120 or 130. this will stop plug fouling and improve economy. |

Subject: clio 16v turbo Question: just wondering if anyone could help, ive got a clio 1.8 16v and currently am turboing it. i have all the engine done with the forged low comppistons, gas flowed head ect. and have a front mounted intercooler being made with the pipe work at the moment but ive bin told im going to need bigger injectors, a separte boost controllerand im going to need it re-mapping of course! can anyone tell me how bigger injectors im goin 2 need ? and where is the best place to get the car re-mapped ? Answer: well, personally i'd have gone for an extra set of injectors controlled by an aftermarket ecu. tap the extra injectors into the manifold and voila, soon as you come on boost, the piggyback ecu comes into play and adds addition fuel to your inlet charge. There is a 205 1.9GTi turbo out there, and i had a good look at the engine...the owner had put one 5th injector in and i think he ran it off a relay and boost pressure switch. but i could be wrong. at least with the piggy back ecu the thing is mappable. try the MF2 from ERL/aquamist, or even Megasquirt (DIY fuel injection). did i mention im the main man, the top dog, the head honcho, les grandes cahunas?- no?- thought not ;-) |

Subject: Won Question: Hi, i recently rebuilt the engine after the head and turbo went. There is a spark getting to the plugs and i can smell fuel at the exhaust but it just won't fire up. It chugs away and makes a slightly differant sould when the choke is in to. The starter seems to work fine and the car still managed just to start before the rebuild. Any ideas? Answer: have u messed with your carb?- have u remembered to put yer main jet back in *lol*. if its not this, then check yer rotor arm is in the correct position ..... remember, all these should happen at the same time: 1)pistons 1 and 4 at the top of the stroke. 2)the rotor arm should point away from the block. 3)the marking on the flywheel should be at the 0° mark on the gearbox observation slot! also check to see that your sparkplugs are sealed up tight! |

Subject: dump valve & co Question: Hi wiz iv got a dump valve but i want to change it, the type if valve was on an escort cossie at knock hill, the dump valve sounded diffrent to any that iv heard before, it sounded as if two glass bottles were being clanged together do you have any idea of how sells these valves. Allso i was thinking BBT 4 point injecksion kit with one of there charge coolers with 25 bhp in nitros, wot do you think ;-) Answer: ok, word of advice here, whatever u hear on a cossie, it will never sound the same on a 5, purely because the dump valve sound works on air flow!- and the cossie turbo has far more air flow than the 5 one!!! BUT there is a slick mod u can do to make your dump valve LOUDER!!! this is assuming that the vacuum tube you are using is 5mm Internal Diameter. -DITCH it!- and get some 3mm internal diameter, and the T piece, as small bore as possible....i found one with 2mm ID!!! replace ALL vac pipework with it! The reason why this works is cos there is less volume for the vacuum to clear of air so the dump valve sees the vac earlier, and longer than if you used larger bore pipe! TRY IT U MIGHT LIKE IT ;-) id personally go for a properly mappable system, with 50bhp NOS ;-) but first id speak to BB and see what they say. |

It would be fab because he dose all the work to my car and if i help him out with s*** like this he dose it on the cheap as im skint Cheers ian knox Answer: www.aquamist.co.uk im not too sure about the collars, as im tryin to guess what the hell u'r on about ;-) erm, why would u wanna lower your compression ratio?- unless u were goin for really big boost???- and what sort of bhp output? if you want really cheap, you could always get the crowns of the pistons machined....cos i know low comp pistons are way expensiv!! |
