Subject: Smoke @ startup and idle once warm

Question:
Hi,
first off thanks for help on my last question turned out the liner had gone so I’ve ended up replacing the engine,
it’s been fine so far but I’ve started getting a large puff of smoke when I start from cold, once warm it tends to smoke abit when pulling away from junctions etc. The turbos a band new t25 and done less then 2500 miles so I’m not sure what the problem could be...any ideas

Thanks mate..

Answer:
its either gonna be the valve stem seals, or the turbo. also, put a breather on the little hose that feeds into the 'telephone' shaped hose that the air filter feeds onto! this can feed oil into the turbo inlet and cause smoking!
the turbo could still be shaggered, as it only takes a few 100metres to knacker one!
so when people tell me the turbo only has a few hundred miles on it, i ALWAYS suspect the worst!

Subject: Different cooling fan ?

Question:
Been looking at getting a different cooling fan for me 5 (pacet/kenlowe)coz its noisey as feck and on all the spunken time in this weather any sugestions whats best or cheaper.Thanx

Answer:
i wouldn't bother with a different one.
how is it noisy?- does it squeek?- if so oil it.
assuming you have a new copper rad, then the fan shouldn't be on all the time.
also....the copper cored rads come with a strip either side of the core that whistles air past them when the fan is on....REMOVE THESE! then if you can get the fan closer to the radiator to improve effiency!- the closer the better!

Subject: Vibrating Speedo

Question:
Hi wiz,

The needle on my speedo vibrates and jumps around at all speeds, whats the problem? any ideas?

Answer:
check the earth to the clocks. sounds like a partially cracked wire to me, as its picking up signal and losing it just as rapidly!

Subject: oil in water/no power

Question:
hello, i've had a problem with oil mixing with water and making a grey sludge in my header tank ever since i had the head gasket replaced, i have tryed flushing but the sludge still keeps producing, also the mixture is week and cant be adjusted even after replacing the 1way valve 2 the brake servo (20quid!!) and blocking the hole 4 the breather 1way valve and fitting a mini k&n 2 the top of the black breather pot( is that ok?) also when on boost there is a whistling sound, and when driving a steady 65-70mph the temp rises well over half way, i think there is a leak somewhere in something cause when i tighten down the mixture the engine keeps running (lumpy), could these problems be connected (cracked head?), i have tightened down all the manifold nuts cause they were lose, is there any tests i can do? cause i dont no wether 2 get a new head or engine or turbo or rad or fekin anything, i've owned this car 4 about 7months now and its been s*** all the way, it just doesnt have any power! help pls!!!! or i'll buy a rsturbo! thx

Answer:
ok....
DO A COMPRESSION CHECK....screw the gauge into the spark plug holes and test the compression!!! this'll see if the headgasket is fecked.
if you undo the sump plug does water come out of it initially? - this could be a leaking liner seal.
if this doesn't reveal anything, then suspect one of the following.
head (cracked internally)
turbo (cracked internally)
radiator (cracked internally).
all are a pig to diagnose.
get back to me once you've done the first test!

Subject: too much boost

Question:
hi wiz,
i think i may have a potential big problem. i have fitted a bleed valve and it is running on full boost but whichever way i turn it my boost will not go back down to normal and i am very worried that i am going to blow my turbo.someone said it could be my actuator because i have upgraded it, instead of having two pipes coming out the top of my carb i only have one and someone said that could be stuck. any suggestions?
cheers

Answer:
eh? 'someone'?- like who, the man from del monte who knows nothing?
sounds like you have a serious problem alright!
perhaps the fact you've plumbed in yer bleed valve incorrectly!
check on the site for info on the cup mod.... my fingers are sore, and REALLY dont wanna try to descibe fitting a bleeding bleed valve AGAIN!

Subject: f/m intercooler

Question:
dear mr wizard,
i have just got hold of a cossie fmic and wos wondering is it a good idea to fit it i have posted a message on the boards but not much response and how to go by fitting it and how to route the pipe work and the good and bad points of fitting it.

THANKS FOR THE HELP

Answer:
ok, my mate has got one of these fitted.
he put it very low down on his bumper, so he didnt have to cut anything!- he then got aluminium scaffold pole and bodged the return pipe from the intercooler to the carb top thru the gap between the front of the car and the alternator!.
basically pipework fitting can be a nitemare! although his works quite well!
- he got a 13.5 1/4 at da pod!

Subject: Is the Head Gasket gone??//

Question:
The temp gauge has started to rise quicker than norm and will continue to rise past the 3/4 mark........although the fan is on!! btw - the fan stopped working at the same time that the car overheated so i have put it on a manual switch. The water is almost boiling hot, as its bubbling in the header. The header and main water pipe from the rad will both be leaking air.
The system has been bled it but it does the same again......................................Has the head gasket gone ??

Answer:
turn the car on, with the expansion bottle top off. does the water bubble excessively? if so, then yes it has!

Subject: heatshield sensor??

Question:
Hi wiz.. i recenly purchased a bb tuning kevlar h/shield & fitted it. i had bought the sensor for the h/shield years ago & when i came to fitting the sensor noticed it was to small for the hole.. is there some sort of gromet or something else that fits in the hole first?

Answer:
yes there is a rubber grommet, in tasteful orange.
now this maybe an urban myth....but i heard that this costs as much as the sensor does from renault!- ie. £40!!!!!

Subject: 360 thrust bearing

Question:
yo wizz..........what exactly is 360 degree thrust bearing on a turbo........how good is it??????????

Answer:
a 360° thrust bearing is basically a flat washer with oilways pressed or machined into the surface of it. it give the turbo shaft better load bearing characteristics, than if you were using a 270° one, found on standard turbos.

Subject: leak

Question:
hi wiz i have a fuel leak under the rear drivers arch, can't really see where its coming from. help me out please
cheers

Answer:
it 's probably coming from the edge of the fuel tank moulding. this could mean a new tank, unless you find a way of sealing it. im assuming that it only leaks when you put more fuel in than about £15-£20. this is quite a common problem...:-(

Subject: BAD IDLE AFTER HIGH REVS.

Question:
Hi Wiz.

What would cause bad Idle after using the higher rev range? I have done a few miles now on a rebuilt engine. I am runing standard boost. Also is it possible to remove the timing chain cover without removing the sump.

Thanks.
Malcolm.

Answer:
you could have bits of poo in your carb.probably best taking it apart and cleaning it out thoroughly!
it is possible to remove the timing chain cover, without touching the sump....the only problem is sealing it back up, which will require ignoring haynes advice and using loads of sealant on the horseshoe shaped seal!

Subject: light vague steering an squeeking sounds

Question:
Dear Wizard,

I have today done my wheel bearings and my car no longer pulls to one side an goes in a straight line, however i still have some squeeking at low speeds when accelerating an turning and my steering is a lot lighter but a bit vague! could i have fooked up my rubber suspension donuts again? there only a year old! frown

thanks,
Ian

Answer:
i funked my rubber doughnuts after a month....it depends what you drive over.
as a sneaky mod i used clio ones as they are ALOT stronger than the 5 ones...but they do take a bit of fitting ;-)

Subject: QUALITY PARTS?

Question:
Hi T.W,

Where's a good place to source QUALITY parts from for engine re-building?

Excluding bloody Reno, who charge £500+ for standard pistons & liners!

Also, who's the main man for lightening & balancing & flowing & matching?

cheers!, r5turbonutta!

Answer:
there are many many places for sourcing engine bits.....hell there are even companies that specialise in just rebuilding engines that do actually sell parts to the public!
im not going to tell you any specific names, cos people will think im biased.
there are many companies that balance cranks and stuff- thats what the yellow pages is for ;-)
if worst comes to worst, just take it to a tuner....if you can work out where they then take it, then thats even better ;-)

Subject: bucket seats & m.o.t

Question:
Hi Wiz,
I am thinking of buying some bucket seats. However i am unsure of how it affects the m.o.t. I know that if i remove the back seats the seat belts have to be taken out, but is there anything else i need to do or be aware of?
cheers,
matt

Answer:
i really don't think there are any other problems to worry about.
there are some strange laws on MOT test.....ie. if it isn't on the car, they can't test it to see if it's faulty or not. obviously some things are needed for the test, but some other things are a bit of a grey area.....
speaking to a friendly MOT tester always helps ;-)

Subject: starter motor

Question:
hello their wiz im a new member and im very unfamiliar with the r5 gtt but i no mine has a renault 11 turbo engine, after changing the starter wenever i go to startthe car, the starter makes a very horrible high pitched sound this is the second reconditioned one ive had and they both hav bin the same, can you suggest whats wrong or is this just how they sound?????!????

thankz wiz

Answer:
if it makes a horrible high pitched crunching sound, then you have not got the locating dowel in the gearbox anymore. This is the singularly most important thing of the starter motor!!!!- it may not seem like it, but without it, the starter proceeds to chew its way through the flywheel.....which is a lovely job to change... all that for a 1cm long dowel!!!!
i think reno want about a fiver for it. :-(

Subject: SUNROOF?!!?

Question:
Hi Wiz, i've got an electric sunroof on my R5 and i'm trying to find someone who supplies new seals for it, do you know any companies who would have this part. I've spoke to Renault and they don't even list any part of the sunroof, useless wan##rs! Cheers mate. Daz

Answer:
sounds like an aftermarket job. are there no markings on the sunroof, to indicate who its made by? if so, dial 118 *whatever* and then ask for the number of manufacturer....
might have to do a bit of searching on this one..

Subject: re:slapping noise

Question:
hello Wizza

I think the light metalic fluttering sound I get when my cars in the higher rev range is down to pinking. Firstly what sort of damage can this lead to in later life?

Im using Lrp with lrp additive castrol valvemaster plus, could this be a factor?

thanks for your time

Answer:
it'll cause the headgasket to blow. and possibly pit the piston tops.
i reckon its down to summat rattling...either the dump valve t piece on the rocker cover...the exhaust where it passes next to the rear engine mount, or the plastic/rubber runner of the timing chain tensioner is so worn, the chain is rattling. other rattles are bottom end and cam....bottom ed is fixable...cam rattle, potentionally new block time...
your LRP is fine, as long as the octane rating is ok.... although once again, this has been a cause of mass debate, because of Saab's findings on hot turbo blades....

Subject: Why won

Question:
Hi Wiz, About a month ago my headgasket went so i replaced the gasket and was almost finished before i had to go on holiday, so i come back after 2 weeks and finished the job. I thought i'd put everything back where it should be. I had a flat battery so once recharged I gave it a go. It wasn't happening, turns over great but will not fire. I then spotted the crack in the dizzi cap, got a new one, still no joy. I've got a spark to the plugs which are only about 6 weeks old. What else could it could be?

Answer:
you've forgotten to reconnect the timing sensor.

Subject: Clutch

Question:
I have just completed a engine rebuild. I have replaced the clutch with a up-rated one from German, Swedish French place.

Sometimes the clutch is engaging allowing gear change and other times it won't. I have fiddled with the linkages and one of them was a bit stiff but I loosened it. I ahve had the gear box back out and the clutch looks fine. The rachet on the pedal again looks and sounds fine. Any ideas???

Answer:
yeah, check that there is a white plastic bush on the gearbox, that the gearbox fork see-saws on...... they can wear so that the fork doesn't operate properly. get a new one from renault for a CLIO....as i think the 5's ones are identical, but for some reason are more expensive...
did you put the centre plate of the clutch the correct was around? - ie the sticky out bit of the plate should point AWAY from the engine, and hence point into the cover...

Subject: Wheel and tyre size

Question:
Hi,

I have a renault 5 GTX and just like the turbo my car has 13 inch wheels. However, the tyres on my car are 165/65/13's. I have aquired a set of phase 2 turbo alloys and dont no what size tyres are required. Do i go with the 195/55/13's like the turbo? But doesnt this make my overall wheel diameter 10 mm higher than it should be? Will this make my speedo etc, incorrect?

Any advice will be much appreciated!

Answer:
the rolling radius of the two tyres is exactly the same.
65% of 165mm = 107.25mm side wall height.
55% of 195mm = 107.25mm side wall height.
the 195/55 r13's are very expensive though, and hard to get hold of!
you may be better sticking with the 165/65 r13's.

Just out of interest what fuel do u use?

Answer:
anything i can get my mitts on...i aint fussy....
LRP, super +, optimax...whatever...
just dont use normal 95 ron, at bigger boost for long journeys, as i fecked my engine on it ;-)

Subject: speedo

Question:
hi wizard im new to the site and although youve probably been asked before im going to ask.

my speedo dosent seem to be working but my rev counter is perfect. sometimes the speedo will start to work for a while but then goes again. could this be a loose connection. do u have any pics of areas to check?

cheers in advance.

Answer:
i have no pix....
most definately a shoddy connection.
clean connector at back of clocks....see earth is ok too..then look at connector on shock tower, passenger side.....then check connection into gearbox....
may god have mercy on your soul!
