Subject: Dump valve Question: Hi wiz this i a weird one, When i accelerate to full boost in any gear the car splutters as if not all the plugs are firing but if i pull the vacuum pipe off my dump valve and allow it to draw air in it runs spot on im totally clueless as to what the problem is. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers in advance. Answer: the car without the pipe on runs alot of advance. do not do this! you could have a fecked ecu....unlikely but it could be.... most likely is the plug gap is too big....make it alittle smaller and i bet it runs better...whilst you are at it check the dizzy cap and rotor! if that doesnt do it, then look at the jets in the carb! |

Subject: Maximum Limit for In - Car Boost Question: Wiz, hello there. got a small problem i'd like your help with if you can. got an in-car adjustable boost jobbie and though i have plumbed in a three way bleed valve this doesn't limit the boost i'm bleeding off from the in-car. i've got the cup mod and i've set it up like this: actuator-hose-bleed valve-hose to base of carb with 1.5mm restrictor in it. then i've run a hose off the three way into the car on to the in-car and then fed one out again to bleed off air. but when i open the in-car a 1/4 turn it boosts to 2bar (only for a split second) which i'm not set up for! if i close the bleed valve fully then is doesn't adjust at all! but two turns and it goes off to limitless boost again! help! cheers and thanks muchly ![]() Answer: the restrictor maybe too small for the system.....try a larger one, this will make sensitivity less! then get back to me |

Subject: REAR WASHER JET ON WHEN ENGINE RUNS Question: YO WIZ, BIG PROBS IN SWANSEA BOSS. My R5 has developed a weird electrical fault, one day i was driving along and the car cut out, the problem was the fuel pump had stopped. the only way i could get it to go was to install another live feed on a manual switch. then one day i forgot to turn it on and it was working fine as it should. Then i noticed that whenever the engine was running the rear washer was on constantly, so i unplugged the washer motor and then i couldn`t start my car. it will only run with the washer spraying constantly. is there a relay that controls the ignition, washers and fuel pump? This problem has blown me away, i cannot find what is wrong, please help me wiz, please.. Answer: electrics are not my specialist area, but, common sense tells me that somehow the wiring loom must be using this circuit as some sort of earth or live feed. you could always pull the realys out one by one, to find the culprit, although there are several relays dotted around the engine bay, and also behind the rear quarter panel (this controls the aux fuel pump apparently). if in doubt, bite the bullet and get an auto electrician to look at it. |

Subject: Fuel Pump Question: Guess what, car won't start. I have taking the fuel pipe off and there's no fuel coming out when to try and start the car. That leaves the pump or relay. I have checked the Haynes manual to see what relay the fuel pump is and it doesn't say. Which relay is the fuel pump?? Answer: you have to remove the cowling that covers the fuses. the relays are to the right of this. the fuel pump relay is screwed to the top right hand corner of the board that the rest of the fuses are plugged into...usually facing upwards!!! should have a black case and a grey connector end, with 6 pins in it. |

Subject: LOUD STARTER NOISE Question: Hi Wiz, the starter motor on my 5 has been loud since the day i got the car. The gearbox had gone so i took the opportunity to get the flywheel lightened. The ring gear was mint. I put everything back in the car, but still there was this loud starter motor noise. Resently the starter was sticking when releasing the ignition, and then it started to cruch slightly on the flywheel. I replaced the starter with a Valeo one, but still the loud noise and cruching. It does not cruch all of the time, just every now and then, but the ring gear has slightly been damaged, but not enough for a new ring gear to be fitted. I made sure that i put the locating dowel in the starter motor before fitting the new one, so surely it can't be that. But then again i think thats all it can be, that the starter is not lined up correctly. Please help coz i don't want to take the engine out AGAIN!! Cheers mate. Answer: make sure that the dowel is new, and hasn't been snapped or crushed in any way....always put in the 3 bolts that hold it to the gearbox. if the ring gear is damaged, then there aint alot you can do....+ it will make a perfectly ok starter sound rough, as it turns over the teeth that are damaged.... personally, my 'ring gear' is a bit worn, and makes a terrible noise when i turn it over ;o) - probably the kebab i ate last night... |

Subject: head work Question: i've got the head off to do the valve stem seals, is it worth getting a drill out and matching up the size of the inlet/outlet ports to the relevant manifolds? i can see where the gases are hitting the casting of the head. Also what is the max bhp i can get out of a standard head before ireally need to get it flowed? cheers for any help. Answer: its always worth while matching the ports up. Renaults castings are pretty poor, so really anything is better than standard. i think you'll find a meaty cam will negate dodgy headwork.....hence i got 225bhp with a standard head....just something i wanted to prove - as you do ;-) |

Subject: bleed screws Question: hi wiz, cheers for the last answer you gave me, now onto the next. i need to replace the coolant hose, especially the top one as it's perished around the bleed screw and leaks. can i replace the hose with silcone ones and metal pipes and leave out the bleed screw? Answer: you really do need the bleed screw in the top hose, as it sits behind the thermostat. if the thermostat aint there then you can undo the jubilee clip, and bleed the air out from that, and tighten it up once just water starts coming out of it... but this is no-where near as good as using a proper 'screw' ;-) |

Subject: m10 Question: just one more question, my turbo says m10 on it. is that a standard t2 turbo code. can't find anything else on it. cheers once again. Answer: dunno mate, try asking a turbo remanufacturer. doesn't sound like it'd be anything too important, as what you should be looking at is the A/R ratio thats usually printed on the side on the housings. |
