Subject: gearbox

Question:
hi wiz just fitted a new clutch cable on my mates car, pressed the pedal and it was ok get all gears including reverse without a crunch, its been a few days and it has gone back to how it was, cant get gears easily, reverse has to be crunched in. the cable is fitted corectly and is genuine renault, also there is no clutch slip at all, what do you think it could be? wait for your reply thanks chris

Answer:
sounds like the self adjust mechanism on the top of the clutch pedal is worn. try re-adjusting it with yer hand, this should sort it out....but best get a new pedal and top rachet mechanism.

Subject: No power stuttering

Question:
Dear Wizard,

I left my R5 turbo phase 2 in my garage for a few days after national day then started it up let it warm up but then when I drove it it was stuttering and not sounding to healthy. I thought it might be the distibutor cap, or the HT leads or spark plugs but have changed them and the problems still there. I noticed when I pull the lead off that goes to the plug nearest the degassing chamber nothing happens when the cars ticking over?

I wondered if you could help me with this as my knowledge of cars is crap? Could it be something to do with the pistons?

Cheers

Answer:
it could be....probably best do a compression check on the cylinders to see if any of them is down in compression.

Subject: 17"" spacers

Question:
Hi wiz

With my 17""s, what size spacers do I need to clear the tyre from rubbing on the inner wing on the off side, when im at full lock? as I dont fancy taking a lump hammer to it!! smile

Cheers mukka

Adam

Answer:
you can work this out. put the wheel on turn on full lock, then work out from the angle of the wheel turned, how much different it is from standard...then stick a spacer on to take up difference in angle....although it has to be said, more or less everyone ive ever seen with 17's on cannot turn full lock properly.

Subject: Spare parts?

Question:
I have just completed a complete rebuild of my engine. I have refitted the engine but have a few problems. the oil breather on the left ( if your standing in front of the car) there is a pipe coming out of the side, where does that pipe go? Next on top of the rocker cover there is a breather pipe, where does that go? Lastly The wires around the alternator. I have connected a black/white wire to one terminal with another black and the other terminal has two reds. but i am left with 4 black wires various sizes and 1 red. I have looked in the haynes which once again is crap. Can you help??? PLEASE

Answer:
check against another 5 turbo...thats the best way....
the alternator wiring should only be able to fit on the alternator one way, as the two connections on it have different sized bolts! so the negative connection will never fit on the +ve!!!
the rocker breather goes to the black pot you descibed.- probably to the pipe that comes off the side of it- it could be snapped, as they do get brittle over the maifolds....

Subject: perc fan doesnt come in very often...

Question:
My perc fan very very rarely comes in to cool the carb although the car does get hot - as they do..my car suffers with reno jerkiness when its hot - someone told me that if the perc fan came in more (as his does) i wouldnt get this problem.

is this true, and if so how do I adjust mine to work more often????

Answer:
has the perc fan got the two sensors working? one under the carb base and the other over the turbo? out of the two, the one over the turbo activates more frequently.....failing that, just have it on a switch, so that you can cool the carb on these hot sunny days!

Subject: low temp rad switch.

Question:
When should a low temp rad switch turn the fan on and start cooling???

my previous rad switch let the engine get to just before 3/4 before the fan worked. I just bought a LOW temp rad switch and it does the same - comes in at 3/4!!! is this NOT a low temp rad switch?????

Answer:
check on the end of it...it should say summat like
""this is a low temp fan switch""
or even summat like : 68°-75°...;-)
if it says anything above 80°, then it isn't a low temp switch.

Subject: How to Tighten Head Bolts

Question:
How do I tighten the head bolts - is there a set procedure???

Answer:
yeah...starting middle back,
then middle front.
then next one along (front, drivers side),
then back, drivers side,
then back passenger side....continue in a clockwise circle...
so:
8 4 1 5 9
7 3 2 6 10
(frnt of engine)

Subject: engine oil pressure gauge

Question:
Theres no oil pressure reading on the standard gauge - how do i diagnose whats wrong??

Answer:
it could be a few things....
a fecked oil pressure gauge, a fecked sender unit, fecked wiring, or a fecked oil pump....:-(
no real way to diagnose which is at fault.

Subject: T25

Question:
Can I fit a T25 turbo on from the fiesta Turbo? Will it increase the performance? If so how, i.e. more boost, cooler air etc.

Answer:
not too sure about this one...although i doubt it, as you can fit the t3 off a escort RST straight onto it, which means the manifold has the wrong stud pattern on it (t3 as oppose to a t2). also the exhaust housing means that you'd have to get a new exhaust elbow made up....basically a nitemare!

Subject: LARGEST WHEELS

Question:
HI PEOPLE, PLEASE CAN SOMEBODY TELL ME WHAT THE LARGEST SIZE WHEELS AND TYRES ARE THAT I CAN FIT TO MY CAR WITHOUT:
1)MODIFYING THE CAR TOO MUCH.
2)WITHOUT IT EFFECTING THE MOT.

THANKS FOR READING THIS AND I AWAIT YOUR WISDOM.

Answer:
ok...you can fit 15 inch wheels with 195/45 r15's without any mods at all. you can get away with 195/50 r15 tyres , depending on the shape of the tyre wall (flat or rounded)
16's require some arch modding, and 17's do too, along with adjusting the bottom of the suspension cup with a large mallet!

then you gotta think about lowering it. *lol*

Subject: engine conversion

Question:
Gooday mate-
just done my own engine conversion of my 1.4 gtl, added a turbo to it and its goin well, i need to know whats the max psi i can run-
this is the codes on the metal plate on the turbo-
466506-5
6001009280
k3346f
tb0214
alloy cooler, full scorpion exhause, enlarged turbo elbow, grp a head gasket, good fully synthetic oil, cup mod, air filter copper core rad?
Also this fuel enrichment circuit im hearing about, you know much about it wiz?
Thanks
GT_MAXER

Answer:
ok, so maybe im being stupid...
is the car a gtl with a gt turbo engine in it?
is it the gtl lump with a blower on it?
or...
is it the gtl block with a gtturbo head and ancilliaries on it?

i really need to know this before i answer your Q...

the enrichment circuit is part of the carb. as the car rises up the rev range, diaphragms inside the carb open at certain fuel pressures/ boost pressures...these make fuel accessible to the carb at certain points in the rev range. so at low revs the fuel available is from the main jet. at mid range its available from the main jet and the first stage enricher. at high revs the fuel comes from the main jet and first and second stage enrichers!
the enrichment circuit is located in the lump on the gtturbo carb that points over to the passenger side of the car, and has the 'pipe that goes no-where' attached to it.

Question:
Yea its gtl block and head with turbo manifolds on it etc. turbo carb etc.

What i do with the jets to help better fueling at high rev range as i hear this will benefit the 5,make the secondary jets bigger or one of them?
Thanks Wiz
Compressing is 2 high maybe on my block but it mite be ok????!!!
smile
Thanks

Answer:
i think the compression maybe too high for running serious boost...but if you don't try we'll never know!
if you wanna improve the fuelling at higher revs, drill the 2nd stage enricher out to approx a 1.2mm....this is the brass bush thats at an angle in the carb body on the passenger side of the carb.....make sure that you don't get any swarf down the tube, as it leads to the emulsion tube, and will potentially cause rough idling/running if you block up the air corrector or idle jet.
thinking about it though, as yours if high compression, i'd remove the removable first stage enricher (100 jet) and swap it with the standard air corrector (125 jet) as this will cause fuel to come in lower revs, potentially where you will need it more than a low compression engine!

I was thinking with the high compression it may be needed in both lower revs and especially higher. Im not sure what air corrector jet is in my carb so not sure about changing, could i just bore them out to a set size to help, i just hear this is very benefitial and i wanna help my high compression 5 in every way. Also with the high compression i have would high ron help ie 100+ron.
Thanks
GT_MAXER

Answer:
higher the RON the better ;-)
you need to make the air corrector smaller and the main jet bigger.
assuming your venturi is a standard size, then get the air corrector down to a 1mm and put the main up to 1.3mm- 1.5mm.

Question:
hi wizard!!! im thinking of buying a nitrous kit for my r5.will i need any modifications to cope with the nos??? :-)

yeah, a spare set of pistons and liners..;-)
you may need another fuel pressure regulator and another fuel pump, to maintain and regulate a constant pressure to the solenoids.

Subject: Looking at the HG to determine failure mode!

Question:
Hello Mr Wiz, fountain of all knowledge etc etc ;-)

Right basically i've been playing around with the carb and the boost this morning, trying out different things as you do. And this afternoon a water hose popped off after booting it, the temp didnt get too high i.e. just below the first red mark, before i managed to pull over and fix it, but it did loose about three litres of water.

Once i got home i noticed oil in the header tank and the system seems to be pressurising more than it should.

Now assuming this is HG failure how can i tell if the gasket has gone from either overboosting/not enough fuel etc from the mornings antics or from overheating due to the hose coming off? Assuming the 2 arn't linked, which is more likely to lean towards the first option :-S.

Thanks in advance, Wavsmile

Answer:
ok....
if ya car detonates then on the back face of the fire rings you get small dents appear in the metal....looks like someone has physically got their finger nail and dug it into the edge of the ring....
this is mor likely to appear cos of a weak mixture.
a head gasket blown through overheating could also have dents in the firerings, cos i know theres a funky calculation that says for every 1°C raise in inlet charge temp then it raises the apparent compression ratio by 'x'. hence over heating can cause raise in inlet charge temp, and bingo detonation.
then again can't the head just overheat in a localised hot spot, and bend?- this wouldn't cause denting of the ring ....

Question:
replaced my relay and my fuel pump and still no power getting to the pump any ideas ??

cheers craig

Answer:
is there a +ve feed?- cos i think the -ve just goes straight to the body!!! so u could just have a dodgy earth...
if not trace the wire back to the relay...is there power coming from the relay...it could be a broken wire. hence rewiring time.

Subject: wheel alignment

Question:
PLEASE HELP TURBO MAN, i can't find anyone to help me, i basically have knocking noises coming from the back and one wheel is pointing inwards facing forward. i think i may have problems with the rear axle or something and need someone to look at it properly. Ive gone to places and all theve done is check the wheel alignment. Do you know anywhere i can go to check all the rear suspension components.

Answer:
you are gonna have to get a 4 wheel alignment check done, then hopefully the mechanic will be able to tell what is at fault.....pray its not a bent rear trailing arm!

if it is, then you gotta have a broken wire or a duff earth.

Subject: Battery light

Question:
Hi, Following on from last time, I've noticed that the battery warning light comes on every time I move into 5th gear? Yes 5th gear?

The battery + lead isn't touching the exhaust.

cheers, Chris

Answer:
sounds like you're driving a very idiosynchratic car. in 5th gear the engine should rock as much as when in first or second....either way this does point to a partially broken wire from the regulator circuit...(well most likely, anyway!)

Subject: Tickover

Question:
Wiz, can you offer some suggestions!! I've just replaced all the main coolant hoses on the 5, completely flushed the coolant system cos the water was a nice shade of brown, put it all back together and she just wont run as well as she used to!! The revs are constantly flickering from about 500 - 1000 rpm. I've tweaked the idle screw and got it running the best I can but it still cuts out due to low revs....and that's with the choke out!!!!

Any ideas????

Answer:
its got very little todo with replacing water pipes, and more to do with rubbish blocking up yer carb. take the carb off and carefully clean the carb base.....then remove the idle jet and make sure there is no swarf in there. but back together...it shoudl now idle ok, if it doesn't however.... see if the two one way valves at the back of the manifold are tight and working....v.careful not to snap them off!
then suspect the restrictor in the breather system has dropped out...

Subject: Puffs of black smoke

Question:
Hi Wizz
I have recently had a fuel tank leak, I removed the fuel tank and had it repaired, after refitting i found the car wouldn't start properly ( seemed like lack of fuel ) so i played around with the fuel pump and then it started to run fine but when i was to put my foot to the floor there would be a puff of black smoke coming from the exhaust (This is whilst stationary) the idle seems fine slow acceleration seems fine but only when slight rapid acceleration is done it produces the smoke. I feel it is lacking air in the mixture any ideas?

Answer:
yeah, take the carb apart, clean it out, removing all the crap thats been pushed into it by the pump, and also change yer fuel filter...

Subject: fitting new pipes

Question:
Hi wiz! Im new to this club and am currently in the process of doing a couple of bits to my GTT as I had a bit of a dire w/end and spent most of saturday on the side of the road! I had a couple of my coolant hoses split on me and ended up with a messy engine bay. My question is this - As i am now waiting for a spanky new set of sillicone hoses to replace the old perished ones is there anything in particular i need to do when fitting the new ones e.g. draining all of the old coolant, flushing the rad etc! The hoses im changing are w/pump to inlet manifold, w/pump to turbo, carb to turbo and carb to inlet manifold. Cheers wiz!

Answer:
just fit the bloody things, and stop worrying about flushing it out... ;-)
the only way to truly flush the water system on these beasties is by unscrewing the 11mm bolt that is under the waterpump....funnily enough its the block drain plug, and it does what its supposed to do, when undone! to drain the rad, you have to remove the bottom water hose...nice job if you got 4 hands and arms like cocktail sticks....for the rest of us, its nauseous!

Subject: oil pressure fluctuations

Question:
oh heavenly turbo wizard, font of all knowledge, fixer of all renault turbo type thingies. I have a dire question to ask and a problem to pose! my J plater (67k) has a problem when the engine oil wams up an is noticible when deacceleratin from high revs an when approaching hi revs in the fact that the oil pressure fluctuates, I have changed from 10w 40 castrol magnatec to 10w 60 castrol RS (but kept the same filter on), cleaned the connections to the OEM guage but alas no fix! do i need a new sender? also the gauge doesnt register how much oil is in the tank, is this also a sign that the sender is b*lloxed?

please reply soon, a pi$$ed off brizza! frown

Answer:
ok, one or both sender could be balls'dup. the engine rocks under acceleration and *could* be causing movement of wires...
failing that....your big end bearings are slowly being fecked...or yer turbo is about to let go....hence why pressure variations of oil!

probably best to get an aftermarket gauge my friend!
