Subject: Knob Prob Question: Dear Turbo Wizard, I have a problem.... no matter how i pull or jerk my knob, it won't come off in my hand. I've tried screwing it and tugging it, but it just won't release itself. The reason why i need it away, is cos the rubber coating on the outside of it has worn out!- It just doesn't feel the same as it used to! Is it a one man jobby?- or will a 'friend' have to help me bring it off? I heard someone mention a pair of pliers and a saw...:-( Answer: Very funny way of putting things Sparkie! ;-) I have heard of people having to saw off there knob piece by piece to save the gearstick from damage but you may be able to get away with using a large pipe wrench or similar to screw it off. |

Subject: lower than my gran Question: I about to become the proud owner of a set of avo coil-over suspension! And just wanted to know how low can I go! I've go 195-45 15 on the car! Also is they’re much to be gained by taking an angle grinder to the arches! Many Thank's Andy Answer: The height is literally up to you. You can take metal off the front arches to gain enough clearance for about another 50mm of drp if you really want to. The back is harder to go mega low but you could shave off anything the tyres hit or just raise it back up a bit. |

Subject: Loud knocking from the back right Question: when I bought the car (2 years ago) there was always a knoking from the back right. I have taken the car off the road, to get it back to pristine condition. It was lowered when I took ownership, KONI all round, set to hard. IS it more likely that it is the torsion bushes have worn, or could it be as simple as a new shocker? Also, I have a Sony mini disk player, it doesnt work when installed into the radio compartment. I have seen that you can move the heater controls, and place the radio there. This would work in my case, but i dont know where to start, any pointers?? Cheers Arran Answer: The shocker could be worn out but is more likely the bolt at the top has worn a bigger hole in the chassis and is rattling around. To fit the stereo into the dash you will need to cut out the plastic between the heater controls and the clock, after removing the clock that is! Then you will have to secure it somehow (brackets?) and finally make a surround for the heater controls to fit neatly in the stereo slot. To get the controls to work properly you will need two of the long type control cables and you may need to reroute the cables. |

Subject: ""play"" on the steering Question: Hi Wiz, Amongst other things, I have developed play on steering, its not a great deal, but it used to be nil, increadibly responsive, i cant turn the steering wheel about 2 inches each way before the front wheels turn. Whats the most likely cause, is there a steering rack connection that wears out? Cheers Arran Answer: I would get the steering colomn universal joint checked as these wear out and also get the steering track rod ends checked as these are allways wearing out. |

Subject: Rubbish heater!!! Question: Since I bought my GT Turbo my heater has never been very good, I would've thought the 5 Turbo would've had the best heater ever coz they run that hot!!!!!! What can I do to improve the heater? Answer: You have probably got a blocked heater matrix. You have a choice, either flush out the system or fit a new one. |

Subject: Mayonaise Question: Hi There I have been having problems with oil fowling on piston 4 and took the head off today, there is a scratch down the liner, so this explains the oil. My problem is that my breather system is full of mayo and the head-gasket which was take off looks perfect and there is no mayo in the head apart from on the rocker cover near where the breather pipe goes on, the breather pot is also full of the stuff, any ideas on what could be causing this. Also as the breather system is shite on these cars and after the rebuild i will be running around 28psi could you recommend a different/replacement breather system or is this not necessary. Cheers Answer: There can be quite a build up of mayo due to the car being used for too many short journeys and not getting hot enough to burn off the crud formed by condensation and oil vapour mixing. Clean out the whole system and it should be ok. You could always revise the system and fit a catch tank if you liked instead. |

Subject: benefits from having an uprated fuel pump Question: i have got a group ""A"" carb, hybrid turbo intercooler, basically everything. i am set up to run 180bhp (20psi). would i find it beneficial to have a uprated fuel pump. would my car be more responsive. i know uprated fuel pumps are essential if you are running over 200bhp but will one still benetfit me? oh one other thing, i am thinging of purchasing a quickshift kit, your thoughts is it worth £235? i eagerly await your response mr guru! Answer: The uprated fuel pump will only benifit you if you are getting fuelling problems. You could try fitting a fuel pressure gauge into the system before the carb to see if you are getting enough pressure. The system pressure should always be about 4-5psi above boost pressure. ie. tickover would be 4-5psi and 20 psi boost would be 24-25psi fuel pressure. If you get lower figures then try fitting a new fuel filter before buying a new pump. I think quickshift kits are down to your own preference. It is possible to ""beat the syncro"" and crunch gears if you are too fast. Most people just cut down the standard lever to reduce throw, although this will increase the pressure needed to change gear slightly |

Subject: noise Question: Hi Wiz, just read david drewerys message about the rattle snake sound when lifting off the gas and I have the same sound when I lift off exept I dont have a dump valve, the sound has been their since ive had the car but dont know what it can be. could it be the wastegate just opening and closing?. I have had a renault specialist check over the whole car when he did my piston rings and he said he couldnt see anything wrong. any ideas yourself wiz?, I am running a standard turbo which has done bout 3000 miles. cheers wiz BATMAN Answer: The sound is there on all cars without a dumpvalve to a degree. Standard airboxes usually mask the noise so a cone filter on a standard car will allow you to hear the noise. Any increase in boost over standard will also increase the volume of the noise. |

Subject: oil splashes Question: i took my car (100k on the clock) for a short burn around town last night when out of the blue i started to get a fairly loud knocking noise coming from the top of the head and the car seemed like it was running on three cylinders. I also noticed that there was oil splashed on the inside of the bonnet, mainly on the underside of the hose that goes to the carb from the intercooler and around the front lip on the rocker cover. There was also alot of smoke coming out of the rocker cover breather hose and the one that goes into the side of the turbo inlet hose. What do you think the problem is. I asked a mate and he says its most likely to be a problem with the valves hence the knocking and excessive smoke. any info will be gratefully accepted as i need it fixed asap so that i still have a job to go to or bye bye R5......... Answer: Yep sounds like a valve problem to me. Remove the recker cover and check for clearances, bent pushrods, valve springs and valves. You could also do a compression check to see if the valves are still seated correctly. |

Subject: Disributor Cap Question: Wizard, I hear on the grapevine that there are 2 different types of Dizzy cap. Is this true? If so which one should I choose. I have a phase 2 on an H plate...Any ideas?? Cheers Lomo Answer: You need the cap to suit your distributor. Most are ducellier but check first before buying as there are many different rotor arms as well. |

Subject: in need of enlightening Question: wiz, when driving at night, the display on the clocks is a bit dull, it doesn't bother me but i'd rather it be brighter, can you tell me how hard it is to change the bulbs, i don't want to fuck anything either Answer: I don't mean to insult your intelligence but have you checked the dimmer switch (located under the dash to the right of the steering wheel) is not set too low? Changing the bulbs is as easy as popping the dash top off and unscrewing the two torx screws to be able to pop/lift the clocks out. Then just disconnect the multiplugs to get good access to the bulb holders on the back of the clocks. |

Subject: backfire Question: Howdy wiz, What can cause a car to backfire on acceleration?, my car seems a little chuggy now and again and when I floor it and its pulling away theres a loud pop and the car jurks forward like mad and a puff of sooty smoke comes out the exhaust. I checked where the king plug lead goes into the dizzy cap and their is a small amount of white powder inside which covers about half the diameter of the bottom. Could this be my problem?, or could it just be a build up of carb, the car has been stood for a couple of months. Also, will Nitrox or Redex injure my little 5 if I put some in the carb and petrol tank to give it a good clean? Thankyou in advance kind sir P.S Im taking a long journey at the weekend, and was wondering if this backfiring could cause any serious problems. BATMAN Answer: I would start with cleaning or renewing the cap, leads, plugs and rotor arm before trying the carb and fuel system. Redex etc should be fine. Give the car a run to clear it out and see how you get on. |

Subject: KONI Question: COULD YOU GIVE ME AN INSIGHT TO WHY AVO'S ARE BETTER THAN KONI TOP ADJUSTABLES? KONI'S COSTING ROUGHLY £300 AND THEN YOU HAVE AVO'S AROUND THE £500 MARK. I HAVE DROPPED MY CAR BY 35MM. BIT NERVOUS ABOUT TAKING IT ANY LOWER AS I HAVE GOT A SIDE EXIT EXHAUST WHICH HANGS LOWER THAN YOUR NORMAL SYSTEM. WITH EITHER OF THESE TWO SUSPENSION KIT WILL THEY HARDEN THE RIDE ENOUGH SO THAT I DO NOT DAMAGE MY EXHAUST SYSTEM? MUST ADMIT I DID NOT THINK THAT I MIGHT HAVE LOWERING PROBLEMS WHEN PURCHASING MY EXHAUST. CHEERS FOR THE EAR. I AWAIT YOU RESPONSE GURU. Answer: Lowering more than 35mm on Koni or Avo adjustables is fine as long as you have the correct tyres fitted. Koni's are good for the road but Avo have the edge on track use as well. |

Subject: Heater controls Question: The heater controls on my reno seem to have broke. they all work fine but when it comes to night time the lights behind them do not light up at all. im not sure how many are behind them but nothing in it lights up at all. is ther anyway to get behind the thing(short of removing the dash!) to swap any bulbs out??? Is it possible that a connector has come out of it??? and if so how do i get to that to check it first??? it seems like a right pig to get to and i want to make sure i have an idea of how it should come apart before i try ripping it out ape style! Thanks for your help, Will Answer: Take the ash tray out to gain access to the rear of the heater controls it is tight but better than taking the whole dash out. |

Subject: Negative Boost....... Question: alright Mr Wizard? Roland (GT Tuning) said iam able to get a negative boost reading on my Psi guage, i tried the way he said to to do it without success. He said by running a piece of hose from the vacuum outlet at the base of the throttle body via a 'T' piece to my gauge then fitting it at that end with yet another 'T' piece i should get a - boost reading i have done all that was instructed and its still not working. The only thing that gets it working is if you squeeze the + boost hosing at the lobster end of things. Is there like a non return valve i can fit or something. thanks in advance Answer: All you should need to do is ""T"" into the line from the carb base to the ignition module and then run that pipe to the boost gauge. Not sure what he was trying to get you to do! |

Subject: Blow back??? Question: Ive been offered a GTT for £300. The catch is that it suffers from blow back(so the owner says). they reckon that it just needs new piston liners and such. I would like to know if its really worth getting such a car and how long the process of repairing it would take or how much it would cost to do it. i have a feeling it will involve removing the engine and such which is something i dont have the equipment nor space to do it in. its got things like a new turbo and all put on it but i guess the guy has just turned the boost up as much as the turbo will go and not realised what it will do to the engine. i suppose i could buy it and sell it's parts off as i would quite prob get my money back as i get the idea that the rest of it is in pretty good condition. Thanks again, Will Answer: You can replace the liners with the engine in the car but you need to get the sump and head off to do so. A set of pistons and liners will set you back about £300 and a good head gasket and sump set about £50 more. Well worth doing if the rest of the car is good enough. |

Subject: just a thought Question: I have 2 wires hanging around by my air filter box but not sure what they are for. I think they could have something to do with the pressure sensor that used to be on the turbo/intercooler hose. 2 thin wires with little black case things over the connecting ends. Could you confirm if these are the wires in question. Anyway, i was thinking that if you put some sort of push button switch under your clutch that is wired to the end of these connectors, you will have some sort of Full Throttle Shift. This would probably be very dodgy as i am the king of dodgy ideas. Thanks for whatever info you are able to give me..... Sterrick Answer: These wires are indeed the overboost protection switch wires and if connected via a switch will cut the ignition but it is a violent cut, good for flames but puts loads of strain on the turbo. |

Subject: A Few Quickies Question: Hey Mr Wiz I know my anti perc fan isnt working it works when its connected to power but not when its in the car. What sensors does it work off and where are they and how can i test them. Also should it work while the car is running and roughly how long should it stay on for after the engine is switched off. Any help much appriciated. Cheers JP Answer: Perc fan has two sensors, one in the turbo heatsheild and the other in the base of the carb. They are connected in parrallel and if you touch the wires together the fan should come on. It works with the egine on or off depoending on the temperature at the sensors. It can go on for anything up to an hour. Check the relay and fuse mounted near the motor. |

Subject: loosing boost Question: Hi wizard, I recently purchased a F reg 89 GT turbo with a worn turbo I have since replaced it with a T25 K TEC hybrid running about 16psi .The problem that I have is on initial boost up the boost gauge reads the car is hitting 20psi then as the car goes up the revs to about 4300rpm the boost drops down to about 15,16 psi then slowly builds back up to 17,18psi as you hit 5800rpm.Is the car supposed to do this as I don't know the caracteristics of the car and know nobody with another gt to ask. When the boost drops down the car jerks a bit, should it boost all the way through the rev range?.I have checked all the relevant pipes going to the turbo+I have dumpvalve, silicon hoses. Can you help? Answer: I would suggest removing the dump valve and blocking its holes to see if it is leaking and if not then i would get the actuator spring checked or renewed by K-Tec. |
