Got some springs off a R19 16v thanks to Schakal for the 9.
Top is the 9 item, the bottom is the 19 item
All fitted the front end dropped 40mm. Still rock crawler spec though lol
After a wasted day yesterday thanks to the muppets at halfrauds selling empty mig gas bottles
I got the passenger side sill chopped, welded and sealed, not pretty but it's solid
Got bored of staring at the old nasty plastic steering wheel in the 9, so I dug out the original wheel off the 5. Suits it well I think
I have a gtt wheel in my 9 too. Feels much firmer than the thin, plastic original one.
Ah theres abit of rust there
Looks a bit like the Metro above
its pretty rusty! lol
oli isn't sure which red to paint match as there are a few variants.... on the same car! lol
Got all the rot cut out today
Started the welding, got the inner sill and floor pan done before the gas ran out, so I moved onto tweaking the wings abit, because of the extensive repairs to the inner wings the new panels didn't quite sit right, a quick buzz with the grinder and both wings line up with the bonnet nicely.
Also drilled the wings for the side repeaters and then given the inside of the wings a coat of galvanised paint to reduce the chance of them rotting from the inside out.
Drivers side sill is now all fixed, thanks MarkyB for the help and the use of your unit
Once the seam sealer is dry the whole sill will get a coat of galvanising spray followed by wax oil, then it's flat the wings and paint.
After all that just put it all back together and she's ready for the mot
MOT time :/ typical the rear brakes decided to bind on this morning
Doh! if you kept standing on brakes would they free off? - did it pass?!
Took her back at 2 for the test and she passed treated her to a fresh tank of go go juice and I'm now off to find a damp round about to drift round
Good work Oli, it's great to get rid of the rot and then get an MOT, even if it is in the ol N/A beasty. Credit where credit is due, know one in the right mind would have fixed that piece of rotting poop.
Hmmm personally seam sealer, anti rust primer coat, then (top paint coat maybe) underseal, wax oil inside
I know where you're coming from chap
I'd used galvanising spray inside, burn through first on the outside, seam sealer then galvanising spray to seal it all up and waxoil over the top as silver would look abit silly on the side of a red car where as black doesn't and more to the point I'm paranoid about it rusting again
Hehe you'll just have to wait and see what's going in
In the mean time got off my arse today and removed the old solid front discs and calipers and fitted vented Gtt front discs and calipers
The fluid needs changing but for now I've just bleed them as I've gotta refurb the rear brakes and replace all the lines fairly soon.
Fitted a gearbox from a clio dci for the longer gearing, love it 70mph in 5th used to be 3500rpm, it's now 2500rpm, quite the difference. Just need to get the speedo working and ill be able to see the mpg difference
Sounds like a good mod, 11's bit like that for high revs at 70, 80 mph
The old speakers in the 9 have been sounding ****e for ages and have needed changing.
Old on the left, new JBL GTO on the right, should do nicely
Because the 9 is going to be my grand tourer I wanted to make it nice and quite inside so I ordered 10 sheets of self adhesive sound deadening material, it took 8 sheets to do just the front doors :/ straight away the panels sound more solid when tapped.
At a guess I'm going to need another 30 sheets to do the rear doors, all the floor and underneath and behind the rear seats.
I took a DB reading at 70mph in 5th and got 89db , hopefully once I'm done it should be a lot less
You're going to need to Turbo it to keep the same performance with all that extra weight Ipswich!
LOL - you won't see any difference in MPG Ipswich. I made the fatal error of changing my Scooby's low ratio import box to a uk spec item for 2 reasons:-
1 - To make it more tolerable on the motorway. 4k @ 70mph not good, once done a better 3k
2 - To squeeze a little more mpg out of the horrendous 22mpg car - it made absolutely no difference. I assume that this is down to the fact that even though the RPM is lots lower, the work rate at that rpm has gone up. I would imagine that the relationship between rpm and work done is directly linea.
Made me Scooby slow and boring.
I've done fu*k all to the 9 of late apart from abuse it, so Saturday ill let MarkyB loose to fit the new alarm and link it to the central he fitted a few weeks back, all nice and secure now, thanks MrB
He also spotted some slack in throttle cable, got that sorted ASAP as every last bhp is golden as it has so little
The parts collection goes on for the new engine arrangement which will happen end of April
Thanks to Nick for supplying the new engine, got all the exhaust parts I need apart from a silencer, got the fuel pump, air filter and airbox. Just a few more parts to go
Isn't this thread due a slight update ;-)
I've been lax in keeping this thread up to date, very bad of me
A lot has changed since I last updated, the main thing being then engine swap, which was a rather large failure and resulted in a modified version of the original engine going back in.
I'd bought a second hand C1J turbo and with help from MrB got it fitted and running in a day, it nearly made it home as the turbo I'd bought which is been assured was a minter was actually a complete dog and dropped 8 litres of oil in the space of the 12 miles it took to get home.
After much searching I'd got a good turbo and all seemed well till an oil line split and the bottom end died on it's arse.
The only solution, the original C2J bottom end with a C1J turbo head. The current spec of the engine is standard C2J bottom end, C1J turn head, inlet, exhaust, 2" turbo back side exit exhaust, forge fmic and a JP Racing built carb.
It's not the fastest car in the world but it's a giggle and a few posh motors have been surprised by it, the guy in the Alfa GT was not happy lol
And now comes the bad points, it needs a new speedo cable, the paintwork is horrible and can't be saved and I haven't got round to fitting the new rear seats to match the R11 turbo front seats I'd fitted.
I would love to through money at this car and get it mint but I'll be honest, I have neither time or money to do so. Because of this I think it's for the best I find her a new owner who can give her the love she rightly deserves.
Any pics Ols? sounds like its come a fair way since you bought it, know what you mean trying to find time/money for it as its like that with the 11, - progress is so slow!
