    Clio Williams 20v

    First post!

    Hi all,

After buying back my old Black Clio 20v from the big Legend aka Big Steve i thought id pop up a small build thread. The car has gone through allot of changes since i owned it and cost some people many many monies! (in a phonejacker stylie). Lots of bits have improved(mainly by Big Steve's hands) which makes my life easier i guess but there are still things to do that i wanted to do better if i did it again. The main factor would be making the whole Conversion look more OE and less thrown in.

The plan is to remove the Hart n Soul of the old girl and stick it all in a Williams shell. Mainly because that's what ive always wanted but also....well its a williams

This is what it looked like last Saturday.

Then this weekend i picked up the Williams. The bodywork needs TLC but the interior is mint! tbh i could have waited and found a better shell to start with but this is Number 12 so it needed saving (so i keep telling myself)
Few pictures as i picked her up.

    Old tat removed

    Now the fun starts

Like james said top car, and know Steve has put a lot of work into that car since he has owned it, had the pleasure of driving the car, with James as passenger, and car was great, such a great engine conversion in there. Look forward to seeing how this progresses more.

Good stuff, should be a nice conversion. Speakng to Steve myself today and think I may return to a 5 for a bit in the shape of another vag conversion but using new tsi lump ;-) will do another vx but funds too short for now so cheeky vag and 5 it is. Few changes to original plan but will start with a heathy 375bhp spec and even review 4wd option.

Also looking for some williams bits for wide track if you have spare

Hello All, yer i always wanted to 20v a willimas but did not have the cash at the time. The plan is to build an imaculate 1 but with 290ish bhp (might fit a K04 hybrid)

I did look into the FSI and 4wd (a friend has a KA with full quattro gear) its insane! but allot of work and money (you need a lsd rear diff and controler for the Haldex unit)

As for the old bits. Black Shell, willimas engine, wide track... its all for sale ive put most on Williams Clio but ill chuck it on here also.

Yer Steve dont mess around... Christmas time is gonna be flat out!

    Re: Clio Williams 20v

I will take my business to another thread to save taking any focus off the great project you are doing but if you could pm me some prices for the williams bits - interested in wishbones, ARB, rear beam, hubs, subframes etc if at the right price

4wd is a mission scoff to get the true quattro to work over the haldex system due to new ECU / sytem requiring the use of the abs and tc also - but as with everything can be done and as you know alway loved the idea of 4wd conversion

So Fsi lump over Tsi it is as the later chain driven tsi lump is wider by a few inches and you know its not going to fit with the slightly wider 6 gearbox than we used before

So again tsi with a choice smaller 6 speed box and oe management with some mods should still be fine even if I would rather use the tsi lump (already have in the garage)

Fwd certainly quicker and easier to build and should be ready for ND

A sad day for the black one as the engine was pulled out

But before i did i welded the engine to the sumframe so when i bolt the subframe up in the williams it will be in the right place and make mounts to that ( didnt like the old mounts)

Few pics of how tight the engine is in the bay, this is the back (not much room for a bigger turbo?

    gearbox to the rack

    box to the subframe

    sump and modified subframe

found out what the knocking was... inner VW CV was foobared. very odd

now just need to fit it in the Willimas

We recently repaired a golf that had gone through 2 driveshafts after someone did there clutch, there gearbox mount was quite away from its correct position resulting in the driveshaft being at a funny angle. Not saying this is your fault but its worth checking

watching this project with interest.. id love to have seen a comprehensive project of when the engine first got put in.. it just amazing me the power the vw/audi boys are getting out of these lumps, they just seem rock hard. Maybe you could fancy up then engine mounts a little bit before it goes in the williams, just a lick of paint ?

i was gonna put the Black one back to a hybrid but ill probably sell it as a shell if your interested... with 20V mounts if someone wants them (im making all new mounts)

Im hoping the driveshaft was a one off... the setup has lasted 5 years of abuse so one in 5 years will be fine plus the engine is as low as it can be... but ill double check. Ill be making all new engine mounts (to the subframe) so keep an eye out for that... maybe tommorow if im not too hung over

spent the last few weekends prepping the engine bay… any suggestion of rust was either cut out or ground back then treated with Gel. I even removed the sealer to redo it.
So… I got my favorite toy out

Then decided to modify the front cross member for strength but also to help fit bigger ends onto the intercooler (better flow) and I added some braces.

Then I removed the mount (there is no going back now)

Almost prepped (the orange stuff is the rust remover in action)

All Primed up… just need to flat it back, stoneguard the arches and topcoat it.

then Flatted back the highbuild and added some top stopper in places

    then basecoat

looks much smother with no bolt holes in the rails.
Then i got back on the engine mounts. this is the OS Rear. only one more to make then i can start to put it back together

Small update.. last mount made on the offside rear

Then picked up my new BAM Engine... its Tiny with nothing on!

then fitted the flywheel and clutch (nice lightened flywheel that Big Steve bought)

Then, painted the block, box and mounts and bolted it all together

Now need to wait for my turbo and manifold and plum it all in..

It's easier for me to drop the engine out the bottom with the subframe. Also my engine is only mounted to the subframe not the car.

As for the filter it's actually ok. It's a funny pic, there is more room than appears in that pic. Plus it's got the normal filter on. Ill be changing it for a shorter filter.

Thanks Steve.... remember your coming round to help with the electrics!!! lol

Slow progress at the mo… Women and Beer are a big distraction!!!

Plus im waitng on my new manifold to arrive (only been 3 weeks) and my Rad/Intercooler to come back from ProAlloy. The guys there are re-making the inlet/outlet to suit my new setup. (RH Inlet)

Few New bits turned up. New lower arms,

Then I fitted the bonnet to check it all fitted… tight

New positions were made for the intercooler and sent of to be fabricated.

Next job… rip out the dash

Currently fitting the Hydro Clutch, Here’s the Reservoir

There is actually more room behind the turbo now than with the std K04 as the IHI is allot closer to the block. Result!!
