I still wish they'd teach proper English in schools these days though.
They do teach it, but no one seems bothered that the little skregs are allowed to sit there in their own little world starring into space.
If my teachers thought i was'nt paying attention in class id get my skull cracked with a window opening pole and sent to the head of year to explain why i was daydreaming in class..... Letter to parents, detention, extra homework, yadda, yadda.
These days the teachers seem to be happy if they can just make it though a lesson without anyone getting stabbed or falling pregnant
damm it ,i thought this was gonna be a cheap viagra link or summit
Well done you two (Tim and Dale). The thing that I like though, is how it translates from 5hit speak to English. It could come in very handy on here.
REALLY? The way the "yoof" of today bang on about how "dis iz da way da inglish langwige iz now a dayz deal wiv it", I thought that that's what they were taught
So you mean that it IS just pure laziness and stupidity that makes them type like that, despite what they try to tell us?
I'd have to disagree with that Stu. My wife works in a school and I know several teachers. It's nothing to do with fear of being stabbed etc. Half the kids just cant be bothered, they dont want to know. Either that or the parents are a massive cause.
The kids are a product of the generation... Why bother trying in school when daddy gets paid each week by the government for sitting on his ass... he's got a PS3 and 47" LCD flatscreen in his living room, what more does he need?
I heard that kids are not marked down on txt talk in exams.
My two eldest can read and write ,ones 9 other 6 .They don't need mobile phones .
I blame the parents
You must have read my post wrong, cos you say you disagree then repeat what i said
I never said the teachers are in fear of been stabbed, i said they are happy if one of the little ****wits in the lesson doesn't get stabbed- A flippant, tounge in cheek comment.
The teachers are powerless these days, they can't say or do anything that may upset/offened/demotavate a pupil or their parents. They don't get a chance to enforce any kind of discipline. Add the to the fact that some kids don't get discipline at home, and have no repect for themselves, nevermind other people and the system and things are where they are.
Back in my day...........
My Daughter is 6 and can read and write to an age way above her. I would agree with the mobile phone comment, that is where the problem is. Technology is basically making the world a far lazier place.
Im only 29 but through my teens (Until I noticed girls) I was always out playing football or dare I say it, ring a bell running! Now a days the youth are just playing on computers and they are so brain dead that a simple grunt is all you can get out of them!
I dont think that you can blame the parents. For example you could earn a good honest living but your childs best mate could just be a trouble maker who cant be controlled due to silly laws and rules that todays society has imposed. I know it is patronising to say that your child does not have a mind of their own but fot the youth of today you need to fit in if you want friends. Going against the mould these days only creates hassle and we all know what its like not to be popular at school at some point. For kids now its far worse!
The other thing is, is who actually cares if someone wants to use text talk? Its up to them and you are not forced to read or reply to it. This my friends is free will. It actually upset me when I saw in a thread that someone was calling someone else a r****d. This is extremely offensive and derogatory. It's just a bad as using a racial slur in my opinion and should be dealt with. Would the person in question actually ridicule someone who is less fortunate then themselves? When used in the correct manner then the term retard is not offensive. However the way it was used in the thread was not correct and therefore offensive. Just think before you use such words and comments. You never know who you will hurt as you do not know everyones situation. Dont be so ignorant in future please.
To be honest, 'retard' isnt a term I agree with using for personal reasons, unfortunately its just a term.. like saying something is 'gay'. If you're telling me you've never used either of these terms in a derogatory fashion, or any other, then im sorry, im not stupid.
Anyway, thats off topic. If you want to continue it with me, feel free to pm me.
Back on subject, Bric - I know what you're referring to regardin Kidulthood etc. What I will say is this... kids even down here in Dorset can be heard using terms like 'blud' etc. Its sad. Half of these terms have derived from other languages/cultures (and for example, get filtered through areas with a large ethnic base - prime example being London) and kids elsewhere feel the need to copy it. Half the time its Darren from Bournemouth (for example) who'll use a term derrived from maybe an afro-carribean language and in the next breath produce a racist slur. I've seen it happen so many times.
i take it by this thread ppl still aint got over this subject yet?... oh dear please move on its getting boring
lol whatever il let you get on,....
Why bother trying in school when daddy gets paid each week by the government for sitting on his ass... he's got a PS3 and 47" LCD flatscreen in his living room, what more does he need?
Sorry to go off topic but dont get me started on that subject, I some times wonder why I bother working at all because people I know with or without children always seem to be better off that me and they dont work, I must be a mug cheers government. Anyway back to topic I find it quite difficult to understand internet or text speak. LMAO, LOL, ROFL etc what do they all mean? There are **** loads aswell, I think we should have a page explaining all of these.
It is important to be able to read and write correctly .Some seem to take pride in being illiterate.
That's not aimed at anyone ...just an observation .....As long as me and mine can ,that's all I care
gaflyr
I dunna tnk u quite undastnd i realy cudnt CARE wat u tnk...
even i would of worked that out by now, and thats just petty...
Yeh Timmy you #############rd
Grammer Nazis are even worse
I agree with the mobile phone explanation. The spelling and grammer referred to is the cause of text type in my opinion. Its simply spilled over into anything written.
Running the risk of sounding boring, it worries me where our country will be in 20 or 30 years time to be honest. If the comment about exam marking is also true, i think i have good reason to be!
Did I not say to PM me if you wanted to discuss your obvious issue with me further? Or are you just on keyboard warrior power drive?
Tell you what, if you can find ANY post where i've claimed personal perfection, i'll send you a lollipop. I pointed out the grammar mistake as an example.
I have no problem with you, I dont know you! You seemed to have taken a defensive stance with me about what I wrote earlier in this thread. I actually had no idea who wrote the r****d comment as I read it quickly at work and have not seen it since. I would have replied at the time if I could have. I did not mention any names or insult any individual. All I did was give my opinion about that situation as surely I am intitled to that? I assume it was you then? I take it thats why you then decided to retort a bit aggressively? I only acted on what I saw, if this has been considered out of line and offensive then I will apologise.
Im sorry but I am not going to PM as I feel I have done nothing wrong. I have no issues with anyone currently or wish to have inthe future.
i don't do alot of reading or writing other then texting, i do find the whole txt speech thing frustrating and will only use it when i want a message to be sent as one instead of two because i'm a tight git.
the one that i find the worst is ma as it's the same amount of letters as my. i actually spent some time on urban dictionary to find out what some of the things mean, now i kno what they are i throw them in messages just to confuse people
jesus only speaks in tongues billy.............
Different generations, different ways of speaking...just the way it is complaining really won't get you anywhere as "no1" gives a f*** tbh.
Although I don't generally like the whole txt speak as it pisses me off and i'm in the prime of the "new generation" at 21, but do I look down on people because of it? no..I learn to adapt or just simply not acknowledge what has been said. Each to their own.
Thats where the older guys will differ in opinion. If you don't complain about something nothing will get done. That aplies to lots of things in life. The problem today is that far to many people don't complain because they don't care and as a result the amount of respect people have for other people, authority, superiors, seniors and all the rest has all but dissapeared. OK, that hasn't got much to do with this stupid text talk crap but it's a lack of respect for your own language and the people that have to read it atleast. It must be a god awfull job being an English teacher in a school these days.
this topic keeps coming back in many diffrent forms and on other forums too
its down to a few things i reckon.
laziness,habit,not caring,too busy,not thinking,last text,cant be bothered,not worrying,freedom of expression,bad teaching,no teaching,lack of effort,fat fingers,crap phone,touch screen....it could go on and on
i dont always post up with correct grammar.im not too fussed about it.i can read text talk and i can read perfect english grammar and i can write both.i speak in slang at home and try speak slower and more proper when im abroad.i speak(not very well) another language which is spanish but on learning spanish i was recently told by a guy i met from madrid my spanish was southern slang and would not go down well up north of spain?
confusing!!!
am i wrong for learning or wrong for trying.i agree that text slang talk isnt everyones cup of tea but not everyone drinks tea...we dont al wear the same clothes or like the same music...but for the sake of geting on we can accept all those other things but for some reason the text/slang way of communication is a no no.
to the lads who dont like text chat im sorry as im as guilty as the next but come on smile there are far worse things happening...
this post is probably riddled with incorrect grammar and punctuation but i tried my best and i always remeber why were all here in the 1st place
r5 gt turbo's
Ah yea I agree with the bit about not complaining so nothing will be done, I agree with this, but at the same time I personally feel that It all starts in the home and trends just develop..it happens everywhere with everything, and unfortunately the txt speak is one trend that people have liked to follow. I don't think for one minute that youths or anyone isn't able to speak proper english...it's just "cool" not to for some people and becomes somewhat a habit?
Well going by the slagging I got for one of my posts for not havein ENGLISH I have learnt my lesson that there sure is a bunch of old folk on here, which doesnt give you a good reason to type in short, I only use stuff like "am" instead of " I am" because to be honest when you say your going to like the shop what do you say "Am of to the shop", who nowadays says "I am of to the shop"
There might be people out there that still do it but suppose its like u guys r sayin its how u have been brung up! Am totally lost with the whole LMAO ROFL and all the other slang words, but if you have been brung up with it then I suppose it is ur version of English.
People speak how they speak, people type how they type. All I can say is TRY to type words to the English dictionary standard. U get alot less hassle
LOL billy you ledge... I love people arguing over how to type..... i wonder how the french, german, italians, blah blah blah shorten their langauge down...
Thing is it may seem faster, but if you just learn to type its really not
and i hate the new breed
I'm older than most people here, and I have standards.
I 'inherited' these from my parents, grand parents, teachers, role models, mentors, even TV and Films from the 60's and before. Back then people tried to live up to a perceived set of rules influenced by the Victorians. Victorian Britain ruled about 1/3 of this planets land surface area and set the standard for the rest of the world to aspire to. They didn't achieve that by not giving a ***k tbh!
I do care about not appearing to be a retard, even though in one way, at least, I am one, dyslexic, but my written English is still far far far better than many users of this forum. I have a lot more difficulty than they do just to type out meaningful words at all. Yet I achieve so much better.
Not being bothered to use correct English, Grammar and spelling on a text based forum like this says a lot about someone, none of it good.
All the way through school and my first few jobs I was REQUIRED to use a high standard of written English as the people I was subordinate to also had high standards and expected nothing less.
