I'm going to ditch the OE, long Radio Aeriel for a shorter one, does it unscrew off the bit at the bottom that mounts to the car?

Indeed it does. Might have to get some grips on it as they tend to stick fast.
If it's in a bad way you might find the plastic aerial comes off leaving the metal threaded section inside the base/mount. Some grips on that and it should come out ok.
ok nice one, i just need to attack it a bit harder then, the plastic covering at the base of the aeriel has cracked and is spinning round but nothing is unscrewing which made me wonder if it does!
Yeah, that's what happened to me. You can effectively break off/dispose the aerial part now, that's junk. That should expose the rusted-in threaded stump (for want of a better description). IIRC you have to be careful not to break the base or bend the roof when trying to remove that stump from the base with mole grips.
Ended up taking the aerial and base off the car and putting it in a vice to remove it as it was well stuck in there, cleaned up the contacts and put the new stubby aerial on, now receiving much better signal on all stations!
I remember buying a genuine Renault 5 base with a Peugeot/Citroen mast on ebay about £20.00 as wanted to get good reception without getting a tiny mast lol
I used pretty much the cheapest one I could find on ebay

The base of the aerial is slightly bigger than the base that is on the roof, but it doesn't look to bad...
