Yeah I'll bring my 5
Sort out a date when you will be doing a bit of work and ill give you a hand
That would be brilliant I'll hold you too that cheers.
Today I made a start on repairing the drivers side sill. It wasn't that bad only a 5pence hole right on the underneath and the start of some surface rust right near the end. So I thought I may as well just cut out from the joining gap to the back.
Then I found that my inner sill has started to rot underseal can cover a host of disasters and so it seems bodges by previous owners. Anyhow it wasn't that bad, so I've cut out the bad and have welded in some new metal. I didn't have any thicker metal so I made two identical pieces and plug welded them together.

And the extra plate to spot weld over the top,
Well I know where to go when I want some welding done then eh
I am still very amateur at it!
Good work here though buddy....but chop chop so I can pop down!
Cheers Liam. Practise makes perfect, I've only been welding since January but have picked it up fairly well although it's not always perfect. Get back on your project and you'll get better yep won't be long and you can come round for a gander.
you dont half like making work for your self do you!
shes looking better and better mate which isn't easy to be honest. cant wait to see this!
don't, I've just had one of those moments where I'm looking at the car and thinking why didn't you just leave it alone still onwards and upwards. Expect more updates soon.
Oh and smithy, your putting more pressure on me to get this finished with your I can't wait to see this quotes I don't want to let you down
Sill is now fully welded in position tomorrow evening I'll get back on the bay, seam sealing, filling bla bla bla
Had a good few hours today filling, sanding and smoothing things out. I'm about 70% done there still feel like I've got loads to do but I'm hoping to shoot some top colour on either this Sunday or possibly the Monday. Then just another sill to replace and I can start thinking about putting it back together.
A few pics
Looks good, did you use the brush on sealant in the arche? Getting there now mate.
Cheers Goobie, no the white sealant is from a silicone gun I just masked off then pumped it in and dragged it out with a brush.
I managed to get a coat of primer on yesterday but unfortunately it will need another as I didn't sand down enough in places and you can see sanding marks. I've just put on 4 layers of rubberized anti stone chip all under the arches, underneath the chassis rails and along the drivers sill. It's supposed to be white but is more a cream, never mind once the top coats on it shouldn't notice. Pics to follow
Pics,
Getting close to piecing it all together now. Looking rather fresh too!
Not had much time lately, but have managed to repaint my shocks ( I mixed the paint at 2:1 & it should have been 50:50, so it had alot if drips ) all good now. I've also cleaned up back to bare metal and primed my clutch fork, distributor, lower steering column, fpr and the funny engine mount that slips into the subframe. I'll be painting them with a silver base and then a lacquer over this afternoon. And I've also wet sanded the engine bay ready for its final primer again today at some point . Top coat tomorrow as well I've got to that bored stage of it now, I'm looking forward to dropping the sandpaper and spray gun for sockets and spanners
Keep at it. You will get there in the end mate. There is always light at the end of the tunnel
Just spent 4hours wet sanding the engine bay my finger tips are getting sore. I'm just making a then I will put the top coat on, fingers crossed it goes ok.
no pain no gain mr lol good on ya mate. cant wait to see this! dont let me down
your doing well mate!! it will all be worth it in the end.
I hope so smithy
Some pics
I'll try again
And some more & one of my dog wedged down the side of my shed she did manage to get out.
At your dog stuck, took me a minute to try work out what way round that picutre should be only to realised she wedged.
That is a top job on your engine bay, looks so good without all the holes scatter about. Might have todo the same.
Cheers Goobie. I welded up about 40 holes can't wait to put it all back
look nice and fresh mate, keep up the good work
Not much in the way of progress and to be honest things are going to slow a little the car was getting in the way of time with the family especially the last month where I've been flat out on it.
So I've decided to get it finished for the retro show instead which gives me an extra two weeks (sorry smithy, I'm still going to the fcs so you can give me a slap ) and means I can spend time with my better half and my two boys
Anyhow I've had a bit of a snag with he paint..... it's the the wrong colour the pictures will tell the story needless to say ill be going back to get it mixed correctly. The engine bay will stay that colour as its only just off, but that will stand out like a sore thumb against the door.
I've also ordered some por 15 engine enamel so have started to strip the old paint off the block.
I've tried for nearly ten minutes to load a picture and its not having it.
I'll try again
I'll try one more time.
Sheet me it's worked. The bonnet hinge is from the 1st tin of paint which was near on spot on. And you can see what the 2nd tin came out like . I've dropped it off at the paint shop and they are mixing it up so it's hopefully the same. Also a quick pic of engine paint being stripped ready for new colour.
I've also just bought a 22mm golf ralley G60 master cylinder to go with my wilwood brakes, and have dropped my sump, oil return pipe and my pedal box off to be powder coated. Fingers crossed I can start to put everything back together soon.
Just picked up a few bits from the powder coaters. And my engine paint has finally turned up I'll start that tonight. I've also ordered some boring stuff from Mike 16v, mainly gaskets.
I think I might have a bling addiction could be worse I guess
Pics
So, ready for National Day?
I've basically given up
nice!!! i like bling.
Jeff, I'm not sure yet I had to rein it in a bit to spend time with the family. I've got a fellow rtoc member helping me Sunday, I'm going to be putting everything back on the subframe and get the subframe bolted up. I'll evaluate things after that, on a positive note I've still got an mot untill June 26th . There's no point rushing things Jeff, there's always the retro show 21st June I'll definitely be going to this.
Smithy, you either love or hate the bling
New poster! (less than 10 posts)
Really nice build mate, this is a inspiration specially as u done every thing ya self, really good job, I did like ya old skirts a lot shame they gone but the oe look will still look nice, also your interior is brilliant I love the no dash look with the dials was that hard to do, cheers
I think I've finally finished painting parts now . I've just painted with a silver base and lacquer on top my master cylinder, radiator clip thingymejib, timing sensor, parts of the alternator, one way valves on the inlet manifold and the rear subframe bolts ( I couldn't find new ones ). Really looking forward to bolting this all back on. Going to start painting the block tonight before work.
Wow u flat out, this is gonna look even better that before although that is gonna be hard to beat as looked perfect before
Can't wait for the pics
I'd never heard of it before either, don't think it's new though. Check out thread 272 on page 6 for more shiney powder coated parts , it will all be going on starting from Sunday and will progress through the week. I'll add plenty of pics as I go along.
Update without pictures = VOID! Your in risk of a ban, new club rules.
