Very nice job on this poor Gt turbo !
The stunt brace seems to ba a MATTER one
will be building up a set of genuine bbs rm 2 peice splits for it, but im still not 100% on tyre size yet, probably 195/45/15s.
yup, as is always the case with these things, small fiddlly bits can take days/weeks, but as soon as you get to the last bits its easy so very quickly come stogether.
just gota clip up the boost run, possibly make some new brackets, then sort out a few silly bits, then take it for its first drive and see what the engines saying,
got quites a bit done today..
Got all the inner arch rubbins in.
both seats fitted
intercooler brackets remade and fitted.. front bumper on
However.. issue..
Leaking oil from between the gearbox and the engine
Worst case crank seal.. engine out.. gearbox off
Best case leaking sump.. still not a nice job at all.. worst part is im gona have to drive it to bed in the rings before i can sort it.. As soon as i know more i will be letting the company that built the engine know about it.
Got lots done on the r5 today, however spotted an oil leak between the gearbox and the engine .. gona guess either the sump half moons or at worst the crank seal..
grabbed a quick pic also
Will see if it cures the oil leak, if not then its crank, which means ill be hauling the whole engine back out ! again.
Decided since i had to take the sump off ill at least make it worthwhile and fit my baffled sump back on.
theres now no signs of oil ... yet, and the car has a fresh 12 months mot
great news was nice chatting to you at ND your mx5 looks fantastic too
Glad its sorted now cant wait to see this on the road.
Looking good mate! Making me want to full shoot mine!
cheers guys, real good to meet you to tony, another face to a name.. mx5s looking neglected now the r5s driving lol, just racking up a few miles, ready to start a little tuning
refurbed my badges, i would have done the gt turbo red but there was no way i could do it to a standard id be happy with so polished they went.
Look great I always thought they were plastic
Looks cracking mate! Didnt think that the tungy backround against the polished parts would work but you've pulled it off Fancy doing me a set
I could do if you really wanted mate, but ill be honest it really was a labour of love, lots of very careful block sanding and then even more carefull buffing lol
Gave the suspension a little love last weekened.
gaz dampers front and back,
just read the whole lot. such good work and commitment well done mate
Your build is looking ace buddy love the badges you going pod in it ?
Agree, the badges look great
Bit of an update..
Cars going back to the bodyshop soon.. Also i took this opportunity to sort a few niggles, one being the boot had a small dent, also I managed to drive my mx5 into itand crack the rear bumper.
Boot after a few repairs, and some etch in areas
Also I began preping my bbs wheels and gave them a coat of peugeot graphite grey, Im dead happy with the finish, just gota get the rest and the centre caps done.
Dropped the car back off at the bodyshop for a fresh hit of tungsten grey..
All done and this time the right colour.. began building it back up
brand new skirt seals fitted
and badge
Looks stunning Dj.
All your tinkering experience over the last few years is really paying off with this car DJ. I love it.
cheers guys , its not perfect by a long shot, but a part of me is scared of even pushing for perfection as i dont have the heated garage etc to go with it. Just trying to tone the interior down now with a black or grey carpet, and get the rear seats trimmed to match the fronts.
Imho, you've got exactly the right approach. As nice it would be to have a better than factory finish or even concourse, it just isn't worth the time, money and heart ache it would cause.
I tried to get mine to perfect condition but didn't have the knowledge to or equipment to do it myself and trusted a body shop to do the necessary work to bring it up to the high standards I was hoping for, it didn't happen and now I'm back to square -3. Do what is needed to save it from the scrap yard and give it another 10+ years where it should be, on the road.
I changed my carpet from red to gray as I'd removed all the other little red details and it made a hell of a difference to the appearance, never got as far as re trimming the rear seats, best I could do was an old sonic the hedgehod duvet cover with a black back thrown over them
Keep up the good work
In this case however DJ does have the experience and most of the equipment I imagine.
I agree that there's no point going mad for concourse, you want to be able to use the car and not worry every second but there's a nice middle ground where top quality is definitely worth the effort if it's not going to cost the earth (or years), to achieve.
The way it's gone up to now, I'd say it was just right
cheers trev.
Indeed on the way to building cars i got fed up on relying on folks hence i self taught bodywork, etc theres a few bits on the car ill repaint, the rear tailgate plastic strip has a few bits in it , and one of the arches has a dimple id like to sort.
At some point id love to land on a pair of perfect doors but for now it will make me happy, i look forward to giving it all a good polish up. And getting some real miles on it
So what you're saying trev is exactly the same as what I said, just in a different way
I admire your approach dj, wish I had your motivation. I enjoy your updates on all your project threads, I struggle with 1 project let alone the 4? You've currently got going!
If I had the money I'd send my shell across and pay you to finish the bodywork for me
I think we have the same opinion on DJ's approach and intended future usage Nicky.
I think the confusion might be around where you said - "Do what is needed to save it from the scrap yard and give it another 10+ years where it should be, on the road."
Were you referring to your car after the problems you've had getting it mint, or giving your thoughts on what DJ should do?
I had thought it was the latter (and I felt he was doing more than just what was needed and that it was worth continuing to do so), but I'm thinking now that I've misunderstood and you were actually referring to your own car.
Anyway, it doesn't matter.
I see the confusion, there should have been a ', to do' at the start, not '. Do' and yes I was talking about mine.
Was just clearing up my view as I didn't want dj to think I was belittling his hard work and what he has achieved
no stress nicky it never came across that way .
got my hands on a minty mint carpet
it wasnt cheap, but the condition is very good, and it will last
its a loverly carpet you got there.. quick question for everyone.... you see how djs has the matt on the drivers side stiched in why dose mine have it on both paasenger and drivers side? my old 5 just had drivers side too.. strange or was it a factory option?
New poster! (less than 10 posts)
off ebay was it i offered him half the wanted price, he was not impressed lol!
been slacking on my updates.
but essentially ive bought another r5 to get my missing bits of trim
fitted my rear badges
fitted my rms (had to go to smaller brakes)
