    car starting probs

I am using my car through the winter and on a frosty morning its a pain to start. it Will start everytime but cut straight out. it Will do this several times before staying on.

If i use the choke or throttle when trying to start it won't catch at all and just turn over.

Normally its a brilliant starter and runs well.

Is there anything i could try?

    Thanks
    Adam

Hold the accelerator flat to the floor when cranking as if you were trying to clear a flooded engine, allows for maximum air to enter the engine. Lift off as soon as it fires.
    Might help

It just turns over if i do that.

If don't touch anything it always catches but does not stay on.

    Re: car starting probs

dont use full choke . only part pull it up to help keep the revs up ..to start with no choke pump throttle twice maybe three . turn over and start then hold revs up with pedal . flicking a few times to keep it going then add about half choke to hold revs up. ease choke off as it warms up

i love old cars this time of year . i'ts a skill to start that's being lost with all this computor bollocks

Couple of pumps and hold the revs up for me....(no choke flap) .9ac std main 1.4 2nd i think the accelerator pump will play a major part in how your car starts if you use the accelerator pressing method.

    Re: car starting probs

    thanks for all the responses.

i cant use any throttle or any choke it just wont start.

first attempt it works with good revs which gets the oil pressure up, then it cuts out no matter what.

then i have to have no throttle at all no choke at all, start it and it will idle very low 600rpm may be, let it do this for a few seconds then gingerly tickle the pedal till the revs rise then choke to hold a steady 1100 rpm ish.

its become a mamouth task in the mornings now. Although i have treated it to an electric heater today so will pop the bonnet tomorrow am and just get some warm air under there. (i will be very care fully of everything dont worry).

i will hold my hands up i thought paaaa how bad can it be in the winter i am hardcore i can hack it in the 5...................... now i just want to wrap it up in a blanket with a cup of coco and a hot water bottle!!!!

i am also concerned because each morning while i try to awaken they sleepy 5 into life i am fiding myself chatting to it,

'good morning Margo how are you today? do you fancy starting for me this morning???............................ doh, doh, doh ................. ahhhh thank you'

Do you have an afr gauge?
Each day at my unit i put a radiator inside it all day, keeps it soooooooooooooo toasty for going home also nice and dry and doesnt freeze up so much the next day.
(were on farm land so electricity is subsidised lol)

    Re: car starting probs

My 5 thankfully starts first time in the cold -3 this morning by that I mean there's something up with your 5 and its not the cold.. Is it flooding its plugs? My carb was drilled out to 1.5 and always flooded its self and wouldn't start I had to empty the chamber to get it going

    Re: car starting probs

glad yours is good man its so annoying when they play up.

yeah my previous 5's have been fine in the cold and this is by far the most up together example which is even more frustrating.

i need to look through the receipts to see whats been done to the carb as i cant remember.

if it was flooding would it not be grateful for a bit of throttle (more air ?)

    Re: car starting probs

Depends on if you leave the throttle pressed in the same place, initially as you press it, it dumps fuel in.
Sounds like its flooding but its difficult to say without experiencing it. If you pump the accelerator does it start? or get worse?

    Re: car starting probs

after a few tries it will idle fine (when its still stone cold)

if i pump the throttle it just turns over.

once running it runs lovely, and will start fine the rest of the day even left for 9hrs at work its just that very first start in the frosty morning.

thanks for all the suggestions i will have a look at the weekend with what has been suggested.
