Not a bad price for a brand new one...if thats inclusive of vat and postage.
Make sure you get paperwork with it, so you get the lifetime guarantee.
Bit extreme but people do this to them....just in case.
Thats a good price mate, when I was looking they all wanted over a grand, TBH i didn't try any haggling, was just getting internet prices.
yes that price includes p+p and vat i have a contact in demon tweeks but the best he could do was a 5% discount then i found a helpful company who beat demons deal to get to this price
in regards to the lifetime guarantee would it be invalid if the diff was welded up ?
Probably invalidates it yes....
Have you tried Quaife directly? sometimes if you get the right person and offer a cash deal....???
Good old Quaife
Sounds like you need a gripper diff then?![]()
How much will it cost to have the diff fitted into your gearbox or you doing it yourself mate ?
Ordered the quaife LSD todayso I should have it Wednesday and hopefully will have it fitted as well on Wednesday I work for vw so one of the head technicians is going to sling it in for me for a drink
Cheers for peoples inputs in this much appreciated
Phil
Check for cracks in the teeth when you strip the box, and iirc you need to grind a bit of the internal casing off to get it in...!
Oh and change the shaft oil seals for sure while it is in bits!
You will be amazed the difference it makes.
Al
Get your chap to renew the gear change seal, as it would be a ball ache to find it leaks after fitting the diff. (another strip down!).
Fitting it for a drink!?! You lucky beggar!![]()
You must have spoken to Nick or another chap we used to call 'Lugs', try talking to Matt Simmonds, he is more 'human'.....![]()
Couple of pics for you Phil.
To be continued......
Took nearly 20 tons to shift the crown wheel off an old diff.
Old vs New.
Few more ...
All casing bolts loosened and light separation of casing.
5th gear detent removed.
5th gear casing removed.
Then....
Yucky silicon.
Bracing and driving out 5th selector pin.
Removing 5th gear set nuts/bolts.
Also...
Remove 5th gear set.
Retain the balls, magnet handy!!

......carrying on.
Use dummy rods to retain balls and springs.
Shafts removed.
Paper towel to retain change lock outs.
Finally!
oil seal removed to show diff nut.
Big socket!
Diff can be removed.![]()
And she is out!!![]()
Fantastic work Matt and thanks again how does my origional diff seem![]()
Internally not too bad in the gearbox, bit furry around the magnet...
I'll make a list of bits and pm you on monday evening.
Thanks for the kind words too chaps.![]()
As far as building Renault engines and gearboxes for racing etc, Matts forgotten more than the rest of us have learnt in the last 20 years. You're in very safe hands mate!![]()
That would make a good article matt, not many people get that involved with gearboxes
You know the slotted/holed ring that the speedo sensor looks at, can you tell me how many holes there are in it ?
I'll have a look in the morning Chris.
Hehe! Nice one Oli!! Your saying I'm old and forgetful?.The starlet head is finally clean! Took two days of soaking.
Hopefully Scott and Barns will have as much fun in these things as the celicas.
OK so, carrying on from last time.
Crown wheel machined and pressed onto Quaife diff.
Quaife supply two balls and a plan/drawing to get the crown wheel machined to accept them.

Next is to assemble the parts ready to go into the casings.
Bearings pressed on.
Speedo pickup.
Old diff Vs new item.
Preload shim.
Time to get the diff into the bell housing half of the casing.
Diff in the casing and bearings lubed and assembled.
Diff nut, degreased, touch of loctite. Done up and check the diff for high spots.
Time to assemble the rest of the parts onto the casing.
While the box was apart I advised Phil had the change mech seal changed. If this leaks it a bit of a pain to renew.
Next it was time to assemble the two casings.
A spot of sealant.
A tool was made to lift the reverse idler gear to allow the box halves to contact.
Then the reverse detent assembled and fitted to hold reverse in place.
Then test the gear mechs. Advise a couple of casing bolts wound into the casing.
Then 5th gear spring fitted with a touch of sealant.
Then 5th gearset fitted, end casing and a finishing touch.
Fantastic work and a great strip down and build thread Matt many thanks for all your work look forward to picking the box up tomorrow night mate again a massive thanks
