dont know many cars that require the engine out to change the clutch mate
guess you can just take turbo off and access it from the top?
possible: yes....easy: no
i've done two and the quickest way is to have the engine out for sure... som'e people drop the engine out the bottom whilst on the subframe, i've only ever done it through the top... it hasn't taken me longer than a saturday morning + afternoon doing it!
so how would i do it with the engine in??
I would say engine out is the quickest way to do it as well, doesn't take long to get the engine out, only thing is keeping the engine steady whilst you're undoing the stuff on the gearbox etc.
Aye, taking the engine out isn't that hard at all really. But then I would say that, because my Dad helps me, and without his help, I'd probably still be asking whether I should get an electronic supercharger or not
matt, as i said engine out is the best way. and while your at it get a ctm 9slot lightened flywheel
It aint too hard to do it with the engine in either. I usually whip the engine out, but I got caught with a shafted clutch in the wrong place with just my socket set and trolley jack, so had to do it all in situ earlier this year.
Just whipped off the passenger strut, took the driveshaft out of the hub (just the nut off I think..?) got the turbo and crap out of the way and managed to get enough of a gap between the gearbox and block to get in with the wrench to fetch off the clutch plate.
I had to turn the engine over to get to each bolt, but hey.. not the end of the world that! Getting it all lined up was a little harder, but take your time and its not too bad.
Engine out next time for me, but it can be done if needs be. One man job too.
i did a campus in 4 hrs that way(on my own)the turbo would only take a bit longer and i'll be giving it a go next time!
you could drop the subframe and drop the box out the bottom...
done taht on a 182 but not sure its any quicker?
On a GT Turbo it is by far the easiest way to take the engine out i have found & leave the box in the car
This is how i do it

Seriously dude, don't bother trying to do it with the engine in, last I did it took me 2 days to do it, where's as when i took the engine out to change it took 6 hours, its alot easyer and u won't damage the paint in ya bay as much
New poster! (less than 10 posts)
defo take the engine out but leave the gearbox in situ...took me about 7hours on my own ...with tools and engine crane...nvr taken engine out on my own before then....just grit ya teeth and get in to doing it...dnt forget to mark up pipes/hose's etc if your in doubt about putting all of it bk in the right place so bottle of tip ex...good luck just take your time.
To be honest once you have changed the clutch with the engine in the car once it isn't too bad to do, last time i done it it was all changed in about 3hrs.
Take the turbo off and all bits around that area out, pull bothg shafts off, remove the engine mounts and brackets for the box and then pull the box off and remove it out the top of the engine bay. Its abit more involved then that obviously but thats the basic principle of the job. I will be honest it isn't that bad.
Engine out leave box in.. Not a bad job really.. Did one last saturday for a local lad job in and out of garage in 2hrs, he didnt beleave i changed it
matt, i can help you sort it if you want.? providing you supply the kopparberg pear cider, a glass and ice oh and a lift back home when im wasted
if you want a hand give me a shout.
just do all that and then ill help you get it out.
- you can start off by removing all the engine bay hoses. i say all as it'll give you a chance to clean them up while there off.
- remove the turbo.
- remove the starter motor.
- remove radiator,i take it out incase of accidental damage.
- loosen alt belt and pull alt towards the block.
- lodge a straight edge on the flywheel to lock it in place and then undo the crank pulley retaining bolt and remove it and the pulley.
dont worry about the bits youve removed as i know where everything goes when you come to refit it all.
I see you're in Ilkeston Matty I'm just up the road in Heanor .If it drives you're welcome to do it in my garage if it will make life easier .I have a hoist etc ...Raj and yerself should see it off in a day

raj its a deal
clee nice one that would help alot as its drivable just doesnt like boosting as it slips
2 hrs is quick where do you live
will be buying my clutch on the 21st so if its ok to bring it over once i get it??
when taking engine out, do you have to take the turbo off? cant you just take off the down pipe/elbow instead
If your lifting the engine out the top you only have to remove the exhaust from the downpipe, leave the downpipe attached to the turbo

It was fast as i know the car well and built the engine and whole thing up for the lad a while back and i do away with alot of hoses also theres two of us on the job . I prob would help peeps out on cars i havnt seen before depending, but it would take longer to a new car as alot of things a bodged together with home made looms and snapped bolts etc. (im not saying anyones cars are like this, just some i see). I have a selected few local members i help out with tune ups etc only because i know the cars well and there owners..
personally i'd charge £150 to change the clutch... labour only!
always work on a rough £20 per hour rate.
Got a clutch any1 game to help me out change it?
Offer's still open to do it at my place ....I don't understand 5s though so grab yerself a Guru .
Not 13/14th tho as there plans afoot for GTA's.....
i have a finger that maybe of use to point to the relevant parts you need to remove and refit so you can change the clutch
Are you bringing your little helpers ???
lol, i dont think we'd get anything done if i did
its a deal whens best for every one as im off at the mo chillin so im free
Well my garage is always here ...I work from home so no bother to me ,anytime you guys want to pile up and do it is fine within reason .I just need to move old JIL out into the nasty cold .
It's only 15p for a cup of tea and 20 for a coffee as well
sweet nice one will see if raj is availible then im up
is anyone else availible to be my guru for the day
any one availible to give me a hand as its gutting just watching my 5 being sat there would love to drive it
Started mine today, thought id just take the lot out as saves the hassle of splitting the box/engine in the bay.
Disconect everything attached to eninge and box and straight out the top.
Ahhh well ..................The GTA is up on 4 stands having a Winter once over .
We'll have to move stuff out the way but should still get your nose in and room to do the change .
I can do sunday mate, the week is abit busy for me as i have work monday, a 5 to do on tuesday and then going out on wednesday.
If thats ok let me know and we'll sort out a time mate.
Bit stuck then mate, can you do any other day after new years? I'm about the friday, sat and sun.
Everyone ok for the 28th???
