Anyone know if there’s any truth that;
They used rear torsion bars from Extra Van - as these are thicker hence stiffer in roll ?
Also used a higher ratio steering rack?
Any info appreciated

I don't know about them being Extra van items, but they do have thicker torsion bars.
The steering racks were no different to the road cars.
i know that proper ones have green fuzz allover them..

Thanks guys,
Andrew - did you upgrade the rack later or was it a part of the Cup car package?
Snap neither mine or clarky's have anything different than the standard gtt parts
Good old Renault
Now you've mentioned that, I seem to remember there being discussions about the bars before, once upon a time. Mine has definitely got thicker bars, and I'm sure that Eugein's has as well. Saying that, I did take the bars off of another one that was being stripped, and they were 'standard'.
What about the extra van rear damper myth on a 5?
the rear bars on coupes were the same setup as road gtt's (the 175 payload extra uses a two bar set up same style as a campus) but the bars on a coupe are thicker hence a stronger bar. also the rear shocks on a coupe were stiffer aswell marked with a paint stamp saying coupe and are all decarbon make
a coupe differes from, a road car in several ways
1. front shockers different coupes used an insert into the base of the shocks
2. engine and gear box mounts are stiffer
3. fuel set up is different . coupe uses the little tank as a fuel cell.
4. rear bars and shocks are stiffer
everthing else is basicaly the same as a road car

I'll stick with the standard GTT set up then ...
Although some rear negative camber & adjustable anti-roll bar would be nice

Matt… you have it spot on.
Well sorted better handling cars will always (with exception of tracks with long straights) have lower lap times.
Check out Fifth Gear (you tube) Jason Plato’s shoot-out between the latest Clio Cup v the older model, despite the old one having better power to weight it’s a second or so slower, such is Renault’s chassis development.
Also note how much rear (negative) camber touring cars run, particularly the Vauxhalls!! They also run fully independent rear suspension even if it wasn’t original for that model.
Years back when the Renault 19 was campaigned the rear was fully re-designed as fully independent, disposing of rear beam/torsion bar set up. Unfortunately most French hot-hatches use rear beams, not fully independent with coil springs.
Just checked out your web site, let us know if you find a way to introduce negative camber at the rear and adjustability into the anti-roll bar?
I’ve long considered using my 5 Gtt for track/hill/sprints but feel it’s too fragile with a nasty tendency towards lift off over steer!!
Although it might just be mine, possibly a set-up issue or worn rear trailing arm bushes? (which I’m have no success in finding replacements for)
R 5 GTT is brilliant for track and sprints, Oli Davies and Dave Clark have ex-cup cars and still compete in races today, Andy Cook used to run a car in sprints, Russel T and James George still do I think.
I sprinted a GTT for a long time until I basically wore the car out!
Re the rear neg camber and ARB, we are experimenting with parts from a clio 172 (my 172 in fact) and a Ford.....
Are you anywhere near 'Kames' sprint/circuit (sp?)
there was a guy on here a few years ago that got rear negative camber on his 5.
i think he was french?
basically involved heating the stub axle up and slotting a long pole over it and bending it upwards a few degrees, then doing the same the other side.
then repeating until you got the camber you required.
It's not the stub axle you heat, it's the whole trailing arm section, you can also introduce a touch of toe angle if you know what you are doing.
One of the old radbourne mechanics told me this (Simon Washington).
Expensive if it goes wrong.
There was a photo on the web somewhere of the R19 touring car rear setup, as it sold on eBay a good couple of years ago.......I missed out on buying it
I think this is the one you're after
Another shot
That's the one!!!
Lovely isn't it?
Don't suppose you know who has it?

Matt,
photo of the mini was taken at Kames sprint track in Ayrshire in the West of Scotland. Mini’s now long gone (broken for spares) I ended up just doing track days at Knockhill as I got disillusioned by the entry fees (for sprints) and lack of real track time!!
It went very well on track days, especially in the wet when all the Mad-Turbo nutters went off at the 1st bend!!
Thanks for the advice re sprinting the 5 I’ll think about it…seriously now
I have vague memories of this trick being mentioned by him. Wasn't sure if he actually did it though....
You want a bit of Toe-out on a FWD car don't you. I got a passenger ride in one of the Mini challenge cars and had the rear toe felt amazing. You could feel the rear crabbing round almost! Very stable with throttle, and helps reduce mid-corner understeer. Makes it a bit unstable under braking though, and sudden movements! I have kept my golf parallel for now, until I fell more confident.
I am pretty sure there are lots of Cup car tricks that where being done. Very small tweaks to save a few tenths. I heard of extra spot welds being added under the window rubbers to stiffen the shell.
I watched some of the GT Turbo footage the other day and was amazed to see how close the quali times where - a few tenths splitting the top 8! Amazing!
The bushes in the front wishbones were moved rearward in the wishbones to push the wishbone forward and add caster. Something that is built into the shape of the wishbones of Williams and 172/182 Clios.
I also know that some ran different tyre pressures at each corner for different tracks.
He'd stopped by the time I was working in Pershore in '90, I don't think he ran anything after that, but he certainly ran GTs. They're a 'creative' lot around Pershore
