OE Boot Badges - Refurbishment ?!

So I have got hold of some OE badges to place the chrome "turbo" badge that must of been picked up from the bargain bin by a previous owner once upon a time

When I get the car repainted, I will get them to paint the badges as well.....

The "Renault 5" I was thinking of sanding the face back afterwards and maybe metal polishing it then getting it lacquered or something?

But the "GT Turbo" section I want to keep bright red....


Whats everyone else done about this? Don't really fancy painting it with a brush or anything gash, want to acheive OE if poss

the easiest way i found to do the turbo badges is to spray them red then use a small brush from an art store to carefully touch in the black round the edges

look through my project thread dude its so easy to do

basically
nitromors the badges clean
prep them up
spray them black
then the tricky bit its to sand away the paint on the letters using a block across in 1 direction then lacquer the whole badge

I wanted to avoid brushing really lol, I wonder how Renault did them in the first place

Mike how much are they out of curiousity? I do however need a heater matrix (new) can you supply them?

Fordy - Thats what I will be doing with the "RENAULT" badge but I want the "Turbo" section in red not polished look


I did a similar procedure with my Porsche centre caps recently, but that was mirror polishing so took a tad longer!!! (1 x Metal polished 3 x 2000 gritted before polishing)

yeah getting the letters red and the back ground black will be hard to do and get a top notch finish afterwards

I just thought I would give my opinion on the way I would attempt a refurb. This is theory but how I would do it ti achieve spray painting both parts and eliminating a brush.

I would strip all paint with nitromors, then prime. I would paint the lettering first and not worry about the backing overspray. Allow to thoroughly dry for 24hrs. Then I would mask the top of the letters, I think the a sharp razor and the edge of the lettering would be accurate enough( just like making the old thermostat gaskets from a cereal box). Then paint the backing.

Pull the masking off and laquer.

My opinion but thought I'd share. This does prusume you have the equipment like air brush. Not necessery but would defo be the way I would spray the lettering.

with the red GT TURbBO badge heres what i did:
based the whole badge up in the colour of the car.
got one of those mini foam rollers from B&Q, got some red solvent basecoat i had
laying around from a previous job (i think it was Vauxhall flame red) put it very dry on the roller and gave it about 4-5 dry coats.
then clear coated the whole badge.


the RENAULT was based up in the car colour, when dry the letters machine sanded with p180,p320,p500, a quick 'wip' back and forth with a scotch brite for the brushed effect then clear coated.

dead easy and very OE

I just had another idea....


Paint badge, apply some bright red sticker vinyl, use a very steady hand and sharp blade?

Would prefer it painted though so maybe the roller idea and lacquer is best, therefore not having brush marks either

Think spraying it then masking it and painting the writing red seperately could end up looking tacky unless the masking was 110% perfect

I sprayed the writing first then used brushable laytex from the art shop then sprayed the car colour over the top let it dry pealed the laytex off to reviel the writing fatted it with some 1200 then laquered the lot they came out mint.
