indeed the site appears to be having problems, 90% of the time recently its been unusably slow, presume your arses need kicking of whomever hosts the site.
Its terrible as of late.. And at a critical time just before a big club event.
Such a shame that this great site is being plauged by poor hosting firms.
On the flip side, the people in this club that work on the site, do it for nothing in there own time.. and they cant help an outdie firm....
BUT its fecking aweful lol
Little or nothing I can do. I've tried and tried.
No-one on the committee can do anything about any of it.
Unless we had over many many thousands to I've no idea who, it stays like it is.
this week I've demanded Webfusion fix it or give is our money back and severely complained again but they just ignore everything anyone says as usual. Spend days of my time again and again achieving big f*ing zero. I'm seriously f*ucked of with it all.
There must have been 5 programmers in as many weeks having a go with no effect on the site speed problems.
Gordon B has helped out and started a new server and got a copy of this site over there and it's mostly working.
I've spent so many hours writing emails to people to try and get them to help I'm sick of it.
We're paying a programmer now to fix the PHP pages that Scoff wrote for this site three years ago but that do not work with the new php program. He has mostly fixed all that. There are some parts that have gone missing and he's too busy to allocate more hours to it just now. He's doing it for us at about 1/2 to 1/4 his normal rate.
Sam M has agreed to help out again get the shop working over on the new server.
What we probably really need is a managed service. Pay a company to do all this for us. Except they won't. We I last made enquiries, though that was a while ago, all the shared service packages could not supply the features or hard disc space this site needs. And a managed VPS or dedicated service is very expensive. Maybe £400 a month. We currently pay about £50 a month.
Edit; sorry about the rant but I've other major stress issues going on this after noon that are still going be going on days or more.
There are about 5 other web man that are in the list of people recently volunteered by club members.
The simple problem is that is take days of effort both on my part and theirs for each one to be able to get in the various areas of the deepest parts of the site and just make an assessment which is usually that they can't help.
Or they had a good look and couldn't find anything wrong.
Or they're not skilled in those languages or softwares.
It's all very specialised and few people are good in all areas.
No-one yet has been good at vB or good enough to have had a look at what scoff did and give an appraisal of what need to be done.
Anyone can say (and they all have) just throw on the latest version. Just about, or actually, no-one has comprehended that this site will largely or completely stop working if that is done.
At least we now have someone who is good at PHP. So that's a start.
With the greatest of respect then Ian , maybe the collective wisdom could be the correct one then ?
Why bend what you have in an old version that is obviously causing issue and start again with a new version and bend the mods to suit it ?
Thats not quite true. AFAIK noone has tested a cloned site on a later VB version.no-one has comprehended that this site will largely or completely stop working if that is done.
No one has contacted my friend ?????
Heres a direct link to his own portfolio of his work http://www.web2o.co.uk/
I told him about rtoc and his first reply was this is bad and thats just the loading time
He is a php man aswell so win win
He is expecting an email
the forum is what makes the club if the forum is slow people won't come on here then it snow balls from there on everything else
i run a few forum web sites
and upgrading a forum is the easy part but getting everything to work the same as before the upgrade is the hard part and any changes are usualy complained about by members
what ppl dont notice is the small problems that take hours of sitting and staring at a screen going wtf what lines is this script wrong then redoing it to find another
i have the upmost respect for anyone thats having to redo a site
i have myself spent 2/3 days and nights at the weekend trying to get a simple problem (it seams) to work or fix something that is easy for members to just click and use
i was hounded for weeks for changing a favacon (se the wee turbo beside rtoc in bookmarks)
we as users can never win the host goes it must be something you have done yet it worked fine on a different server???? no figure
patience is all thats needed
yea the site is slow mabe its due to a huge number of search engine spiders
or someone trying to attack the site (ppl are that sad when a site is doing better than theres )
but the ppl in the know will prob know what the problem is and will get it sorted
asap
mabe its just your pc needing a r.a.m upgrade :P
sorry about the rant .
but how big is the site and whats its bandwith monthly ??

maybe a list of the "small" problems that take ages to fix then members vote as to which they would prefare fixing/not mind leaving???? i'd rather have the site working than have all parts working perfectly.
Just to give everyone the heads up the email has been sent out with what we hope if the relevant info to keep everyone up to date!
Its really important to stress the fact that none of this is going un-noticed.
balls to this website why dont we just all use facebook!!!!
The problem does seem to be Webfusion and this VPS.
The EXACT same site, db, files worked OK on the last Webfusion server 10 weeks ago. With Andy Bonds help, two months ago some php configuration issues were found and fixed with the newer PHP that I'm told is on this new VPS. At the time it did help the slowness a bit but that has evidently not significantly affected what must be the main problem and a more obvious issue is that we keep losing access to the server control panels due to the slowness. Surely the site PHP can't affect the highest level server access can it?
The forum and site is working pretty well on the Dediserve cloud server we now have a copy of it on.
It's getting nearer but the fact that we are locked out of Webfusion server admin since last night (Friday) and they are not responding to my support tickets is not helping at all.
The site traffic is pretty small, less that 1GB per day on average. We need about 30GB of HD space at the moment, but as it grows we'll need more.
Things that might stop if a vB upgrade is done:
payments system
live window
all the appearance of the forum
custom links, buttons.
Other stuff I can't think of right now and probably don't know about.
Scoff did about 50 hacks to the vB source code and he suggests they will all stop working.
The new server apparently has the very latest PHP on it and that caused big problems as Scoffs older PHP was not compatible. Fortunately that's now all fixed and pretty much all working.
Even though it is a slower server, from a user point of view, it seems mostly much faster. Only time will tell. We hope to make it live to the membership maybe as early as mid week if all the remaining issues are put right by then.
No-one has time to. Our first priority, one that I've been trying hard to make happen for weeks now, is to just get a copy of the site hosted and working somewhere else. Development, upgrades and various 'I told you so's' can come after then.No-one has tested a cloned site on a later VB version.
What we'll probably do it take this site down one evening and start the file transfer. That's expected to take many hours as it's stupidly slow to get data off this VPS. Then we'll re-point the rtoc domain name at the new server and the next day you should all not notice any difference apart from (compared to what we've had to endure here recently) consistent amazing speed.
I'm not sure just how fast the cloud servers really are compared to a good 'fixed' server but Dediserve charge by the month with no contract so we can move again if we feel it would be better else where.
Thanks,
Ian
Thanks for that. No I haven't, I did start to some months ago before we 'upgraded' ( ) to this VPS thinking that would tide us over for a while. And we were still leaving it all to Scoff then.
We'll be desiring quite a bit done in the near future and I suddenly now have about 5 people on a list who might be able to help should our current latest new programmer not be able to.
Thanks to those of you who've volunteered your pals.
Good stuff. Afterward, maybe we can give webfusion a bit this --->
the site is running 3 bar of boost for me at the moment!!
This is not a complaint! more letting you know what's happening for me so maybe it will help with where the problem is?
Basically, opening and posting threads etc is very fast at the moment for me! but searching posts and also clicking members to search takes an age??
also, a few times i have had a little box pop up and ask me to login?? it has keys in the top left corner? very strange when im already logged in!
Thanks for that tidbit.
I too keep randomly having that log in box. I didn't know if anyone else was. That is a fault. Don't know the cause, probably will never find out. Scoff put it there as another tier of security just for admin users to log into the shop admin to make it more difficult for the criminals to get in there.
Ian ,
I hope you dont feel I was having a pop in the last post.
For the record - the site is quite fast early in the mornings ( circa 0600-0700 ) but slows down considerably more then.
Little bits of info might help to come to a conclusion.
FWIW I am voiting for a dodgy plugin ( not created by Mr Scoff ) that is knackering it ..
Thanks Andy,
This PHP expert we had said he had a look at the software on there and could see nothing wrong. Doesn't mean there isn't though. Just he couldn't see it.
He did see what was wrong with that on the new server. So maybe it's not a PHP problem. I doubt we'll ever know.
