iv seen it to look sweet and think ian did the engine before it was sold
Funny that because I know personally, at least for the accel jet, that he has every clue. I watched every second as he solved that very issue on a carb of mine years ago. And then charged me about £5 for the pleasure.
He's not squeaky clean and granted my issue wasn't the most vital fuelling problem but there are far worse people you could have gone to back in the day.
Sweeping generalisations about people who've contributed hugely to the GTT scene are not going to make you any friends on here.

ian is a top bloke used to work for ian on saturdays
I agree with you there mate, i got to know Ian really well over the years a top bloke. He did a large amount of work on my old 5 in the old days untill i learnt enough to do it all myself
Did learn a great deal off him and he was always willing to give me advice and tips on jobs.
always a happy customer of ep, car ran nice enough when they touched it
Surley if he was also as good as what you make out you would all still be enjoying his fruitfull services??
Who was that directed at mate, me or 5alldaway?
I'm not a tuner anymore, was I that bad too ? or maybe there are more factors to the survival of a business than just being good or not
I hear what your saying though danny, your right, his carburettors were not clever a lot of the time. I had some of his carburettors come to me, most would run lean, one went dangerously lean at only 16psi boost!! on the other hand, I dealt with one he did for matt's / charlottes gtt and it fueled beautifully upto 25psi, so a mixed bag.
at everything else he was very good, leages ahead of the other tuners in terms of raw ability.
just my 2p.
You were my hero Scoff
There were a few things that happened and reasons that made Ian decide to close the workshop, i believe he is still doing some work on 5's from his house. I didn't stop using EP for any particular reason, i just developed enough knowledge to tune them myself and had my own ideas on doing things.
I scare myself sometimes.
Where's that worst thread ever smiley? Ah, this one will do instead -

Q. Did you have an afr meter to measure the fuelling?
Q. After the first gasket/liner had failed, wasn't any alarm bells ringing as to why they may have failed?
Q. Why keep replacing the gaskets/liners if there was an obvious problem that seemingly wasn't being resolved each time?
Mart .
At the time we were young lads we weren't members of any RTOC clubs etc. We trusted his words,' The carbs are ok there "group A." '
As people have so helpfully pointed out ep was the man to go to with your 5 woe's.
Shamlessly we didn't no about afr's etc. The first time we did ask him about afr's etc he said bring it down and he'd set it up via his 4 gas analyser at this point we had done a bit of homework realising that you can't read afr's via 4 gas anaylyser. This was when we clicked that he didn't actually do anything except willy nilly carbs. At that point my mate was fortunate to come into contact with another top tuner via the rtoc. We never looked back and to be honest feel quiet lucky because I'm sure there'll be others who had his "group a" carbs and then when did fail take there 5 gt happily back to ep for the headgasket/new linairs etc followed by a big bill ! ! With ian or whoever knowing full well(or not as it were) that it was infact his "group a carbs" had brought him another big job .
I'm sorry to the guys who had a great experiance with the said chap unfortunatley we didn't and because of this I feel well within my rights to express these storeys of missfortune. People NO your tuner.

Fair comment, and yep of course you can express your feelings about it all; that's what these boards are for after all
However, and I don't mean this in a patronising way, but after a couple of gaskets/liners had failed, surely common sense would've kicked in to say that something wasn't right somewhere down the line?
With stories like that, it's no wonder joe public always perceive these cars as being unreliable by always popping headgaskets.
At least you're all sorted now Another case of you live & learn I guess...
if u have an issue with ian and his knowledge why dont u correct him to his face
