    kiwi's phase 1

    First post!

    Hi all,
thought id introduce myself, im Rick and run my own scratch/Dent repair business in Leeds: http://www.kiwicolour.co.uk and ive just bought myself a rather nice Phase 1.
you might have seen it for sale on piston heads the last week.
been looking for a R5 on and off for a few years, ive never had one before, but saw this and had to take a look.

1986 LHD phase 1 in pearl white.
beautiful original condition, arrow straight 1 previous owner 72k KM's and a wallet full of every receipt from new. the guy used it as a run around in France/UK attached to the back of his caravan.
interior is mint, its like a time warp!
the only bit of surface rust is around the front wipers, i had a quick dig with a screw driver
this evening and its nothing that wont grind off. sills and all other areas are solid.

my plans are a full respray in original blanc nacre (you could run it as is! but im very fussy - being a painter and all!)
bonnets been painted before and has a few blemishes.

i am also thinking of colour coding the arches and bumpers - currently they are painted in a satin cream/white which i believe was original in this colour?
what are peoples thoughts on properly colour coding them or should i redo them satin/cream white?

wheels are a big thing for me and half of me is torn to getting the originals powder coated and the other half says get some different wheels:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWAX:IT ???

one half of me thinks nooo keep it standard the other says lower it a touch and stick it on these wheels but a totally standard body.

i would like to hear your thoughts/views and see you around the forum.
    Cheers

as she sits tonight, in bits awaiting paint:

Phase 1 in pearl white with the original off white colour molded bodykit totally OE that's my idea of perfect so I think you'll guess what I think. Don't paint the kit unless you have to its pretty rare also the phase one side decals are hugely expensive to replace so take care of those.

Retain OE wheels, put them in a garage somewhere, you'll be wanting them at some point in the future. In fact take my advice from experience, if you want to change anything, buy replacement parts, remove the originals carefully and keep them safe somewhere. Don't make any mods that you can't reverse.

Keep the bodywork as Renault intended. Very rare at that age, standard, in that condition in that colour.

Keep it standard mate, second set of wheels always a good idea, just put the o.e. away somewhere safe like me! O.E. bodykit is like gold mate, don't mess it or your regret it one day like me!

I have an original set mate Ive had them for a while now and have been toying with the idea of having them replicated (again for some time). Ive already had a pm about them so might actually look in to this..I see a seperate thread coming on...

Welcome to the forum Kiwicolour, your car looks very tidy

I've also got a pearl white ph1 i'm restoring at the moment. Listen to the guys and keep it looking OE; I'd keep my bumpers unpainted if they did'nt need some repairs.

Nothing wrong with another set of wheels if that's what you fancy, keep the OE wheel for shows, and the 13" rubber is a bit of a bugger to get hold of.

really really nice! Mine is the same (LHD too, but stripped race car), and I am missing some of the 'white' arches and trim. If you are going to paint it, I would swap for some phase-1 black equivilent and money your way...
Saying that, I wouldnt paint it if I where you
I don't think the OE white plastic is painted to begin with, I think its dyed during manufacture - As it doesnt scratch off.

thanks for all the replys guys.
bodywise - nothing is getting changed that cant be reversed.

the tow bar has now gone, bloody heavy thing it was!

OE side decals are in very good condition so will be saved and going against everything i was tought i will have to mask them up and spray round them.

the OE wheels will be getting blasted and powder coated.

im still 50/50 on getting those aftermarket alloys but i do defo want to lower it just a touch with maybe some GAZ coilovers.

the arches are indeed dyed cream plastic but the front bumper has been replaced with a black version at some point which has been badly painted in a satin cream to try match the arches, its now flaking badly. all the other arches, skirts and rear bumper would clean up well.

so that leaves me in a bit of a predicament - im never going to source a genuine white plastic bumper and just re-spraying the bumper in a textured off white is never going to match the rest of the arches.

so i still dunno if to colour code the lot or re-texture the lot in a similar off white exture paint?

whats this i hear about a phase 1.5 model with colour coded matt arches?

just got a price on the paint today, 3 litres of ground coat white, 1.5 litres of pearl top coat 200quid! plus 90.00 on lacquer plus 110.00 on primer and filler materials today - might be able to do it myself but it still aint cheap! 3 stage pearl paints, never like spraying them.

Such a shame about the bumper but never say never. I would be tempted to put away the bodykit you have and source and spray/colour code and second set ,if nothing else its more valuable to you or someone else left as it is.

you actually want the tow bar?! i just put it in the back of my mrs car to take to the skip, i dunno if its still there or if shes binned it!. i will have a look tomorrow.
its a bloody heavy thing, bet the poor 5 hasnt been over 30 with that thing on the back of it!

bought the paint today, 2.5litres of ground coat and 1.5 litres of pearl top coat.

managed to get a colour match on the arches - everyone will be pleased they will be staying the original colour!
i will have to lacquer them tho however i could do them matt lacquer. or even satin, hmmmm somthing else to think about.

total cost for paint, primer and lacquer over 400 quid! it is ICI paint and not some cheap crap.

also bought some 8" wide ATS classics as a secondary set of wheels. its gonna look the nuts!

think i better start a project thread!
