    Backyard Racing Boosted Civic

    Ok here is the new backyard racing project a Honda Civic esi. We are building this car between us all over the winter as a drag car ready for next spring having all chipped cash in to a pot for the build. The car didnt cost a great deal and is rough in places but is perfect for what we want with the correct Z6 D16 engine and gearbox and the right ecu for the hondata.

    wow, huge cavity that screams 'put turbo here'.

    I really should have a closer look at my mums civic, it looks like that, and I know it's a 1.6, but that's been the limit of my interest. She must have had it 10 years

    Sorry about the large pics, my photobucket pain in arse...

    Anyway, yes ants bits are going on. Still got a far amount of bits to buy yet but with the car between 3 of us it works out great. Well after a night of thrashing the N/A lump around and plenty of booze today we made a start.






    Arrrrrrrrrr oh and its going to be a turbo



    loads of room for big fun...

    Now the engine starts to come out.........







    We then ditch all the PAS crap etc...



    And now the fun part starts................

    nice to see something different

    can i ask what made you choose the d16 over the b16 lump? im assuming the cost?

    am i right in thinking the d16 is non vtec.?

    would keep a keen eye on this project as i may be doing the same but with a civic b16a vti.

    raj we went for the d16 as its alot cheaper than the B, may not be as good but still a good motor to start with...

    The turbo is t3/t4 same as scoffs i think? kung fuiiiiiii of course

    Few more pics here: Suz G16 pistons as found in the 1.6 suzuki vatra 16v which will be fitted, 0.5 oversize so need block work yet also we need to do a few block mods for the rods which are yet to arrive as these will catch the block with them being thicker. The pistons also sit lower in the block so drops the cr for us. Longer rods are available to bring this back but we going for the std length and staying safe for now.




    Also few bits below ready for the build..



    As you can see we are starting basic with the basic cast mani. Seems tho that a few guys in states still make decent power with these. We will also be leaving the cam and inlet mani as std. We just want to get the thing running and to cross line at pod before we start to go to town with the thing..

    the d16 engine is productive too (lots of people seem to ignore it in favour of the b series motors) here is a link to the current record holder with the d16 motor, this is an older vid, he has since gone 9.11@158, this is with 1 cam and no NOS. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=YccjIP9Qlsc

    now were never going to get near him, however there are others using very similar setups to us (suzuki virara pistons/same turbo etc), running 10.3@139 which is impressive given the budget nature of the car and parts used, and is road legal to boot

    its got me wanting to do one now

    that and the fact my bro thinks his vti is the best car in the world he dropping a k20 engine. so maybe ill do something with his b16a?? but as mentioned..costs are an issue. good performance on a budget is what i like

    rob, can you let us know where your sourcing all your bits from.?

    it seems a pretty easy conversion,

    the only thing that'll have me thinking is as youve mentioned about the rods catching he block! will this be something you'll do yourself or get a engineer shop to machine the block so the rods clear it?
    im assuming the block wll have to sent to a machine shop to be bored for the pistons to fit?

    really interested in this mate. keep the detailed pics coming

    one of my friends is currently doing the same conversion, although in a del sol, Hes tried to do it on the real cheap though, and is struggling, hes looking for a decent place to get it mapped i believe at the moment,, not sure if he was looking at the hondata route or megasquirt., ah well best of look, i dont have much of a clue with jap.

    Most of the parts are from states, id have to search for which company is what to where the parts came from, you can buy kits but they are crap and would fall to bits. The block will be bored by an engineer the rest by us. The conversion part is rather easy i guess but setting up is where things may get harder.

    thats the owners club, only turbo d16 motors on there and lots of knowledgeable people, and build threads to noisy at, there very similar to this club in that they like trap speeds etc rather than silly dyno quotes, not a bad site.

    Glad too see you have got it off the ground should be screamer! I have been doing a lot of digging since speaking to you and Dean at the last event! I Think these will catch on big style once one or two people have had a play! Turbod16 seems to be a good site already had a butchers at that! Also like the way you have gone for the cast manifold, the tubular ebay specials dont seem to be very highly thought of!! What do they go like in N/A form?

    Ron, in N/A form its about a match to a clio 16v or felt that at time. Some of the tubular manis are copys and crap so the cast seems a good base to start.

    Right chaps small update with few boring pics too. We stripped engine down last week and all looks well with no nasty marks









    So now all the parts are cleaned up we ready for the next step which is to work out what sort of piston to wall clearance we should run before we ship it over to a machine shop also hoping the bores are cast and not steel, plated with nickel, as i have a feeling that may cost to get a re coat. With the Vitara pistons being NA with a less tapper compared to a turbo (correct me if im wrong) im kinda thinking to keep the ring gaps on the larger size to future proof the engine for big power, heat expansions.. better lose than tight...also need to decided which way to fit the piston arrows as the honda rotates anti-clockwise and the Suz clock. But P2V contact isnt an issue anyway with it going lowcomp so just go with pin offset if any.. Need to do some measuring over next few days..

    November 8TH update..

    Ok more work done today just with cleaning and stripping down the suspension/ brakes. Firstly took the car for a good steam clean down at deans work then made a start on stripping calipers and cleaning/freeing up. We are also overhauling both the drive shafts so they were stripped down and we going to fit new ball joints and bearings. All a bit boring now and waiting for parts which should be here next week.

    November 19th

    At last the rods have arrived and the ARP2000 bolts so notching the block is next on the cards, been holding us back with engine work till they arrived. Over the last week we fitted the new brakes, fitted the new bearings and ball joints and also lowered the car on the front, yet to sort the rear out. Also the drive shafts are now complete and ready to be re-fitted course once the engine is back in. pic of the a rod below...

    Right chaps update... The new clutch arrived last week from states and the engine is allmost fully built back up, also we have all the oil lines needed now for the conversion and just needs a full trial fit. Had the block machined for the over size pistons and went for a P2W clearance of 3.5 thou in the end which should be good for what level of power we want. We then had to notch the block for the rods and the pistons aswell. All seems well tho so far and hoping to get the engine fitted next weekend and fired up over xmas hols. We going to run it NA as it came and run the engine in before swapping manifold etc and management (yet to buy)....
