Gaz coilovers

The time is getting on with my project, im looking at suspension, i have just bought a full polly bush kit, so will be cracking on with that when the cars back.

Im after some coilovers, just wondering who has used or any experiences with them. They are going on mt gtt, richie gave me a guys name who can deliver a set for £380, i have some konis fronts anyway lying around but i really fancy it slammed, also i can adjust the height up for trackdays.

I believe that gaz are uk made, so getting parts or a refurb should be easy.

I know on coilovers the springs are longer and thinner therefore sometimes come a bit further down the shock. I have known people with different cars have then had to put spacers on the front to get the clearance from the rims.

Is this the same with gt coilovers, im going to be running 7.5 16" alloys with 195 40 16s and im worrying that the two will not go together without rubbing.

I know if i have problems i could buy some shorter springs to get round this, just wondering how people have found there coilover kits?

I don't run the GAZ setup I have recently gone from Spax RSX coilovers to the AVO GTZ610 up front purekly for the facty the at AVO's allow you to go much much lower and with both setups I have had to run a 3mm spacer to give me tyre clearance from the spring, I also run 375Lbs 6" Eibach spring and mine is pretty much as people would say Spooky low

Handles very very well but i am thinking stiffer springs I am considering track usage myself.

Standard Specs of what I have found out recently may be of some help to you

Spax RSX 310lbs 8" 2.25 " id springs
AVO GTZ 220lbs 7" 2.25" id springs
GAZ 175lbs 7" 2.25" id springs

so the gaz have a shorter and softer spring compared to the spax set up.


I take it your rims are 7" wide and they needed spacers.

I run Avos, 275lb on std Avo coilover size springs, as they give me more travel on the rough stuff. With an uprated front ARB it corners very well, although for pure track i would go even stiffer on the arbmaybe springs too. My front is helped a bit more than normal with the beefy rear ARB and torsion bars. Id say start at around 225 - 250 lb for street use, springs are very cheap anyway ~£35 odd, you can always tweak. You may find the Konis with a short stiff spring will give you what you want without having to worry.

so the 175lb will be quite a soft spring with the standard gaz set up.

How close are your shocks in relation to your alloys/ tyres?

i have the gaz gold on the clio, with damper and hight adjutment with ast top mounts really really good IMO

I now have fitted my gaz on the one side to check for rubbing issues.

I have no spacers and 7.5 wide 16" alloys with 195 45 16. The springs are 8" long and have o/s measure of 3" and 2 1/4 inside.

Here is a little picture of how they sit, i have dropped the bottom adjusters as close to the tyre as i can without rubbing.

Remember the car is still a shell no engine yet, so the car will sit lower with more weight in it and the tyres im going to buy will be 195 40 16 so should be a smaller to.

Question is i want it low like james car. Do you think im going to have issues with the car and rubbing once engines in and tyres are on?

Im not sure how far down the bottom adjuster generally come to get me low

I know shorter spring are an option, i could buy some 6" with some spring helpers in.

Any advice great lads

On the attached pic of your I have amended it I measure mine within this gap and mine measures 7.5cm clearance but I am only using a 6" length and fecking stiff spring aswell don't forget with no helper springs.

I am not quiet as low as Spooky yet my rear end is a little higher. It's not a very practicle height I have a few issue with speed humps and i can't get an OE jack under the car other than that i like the look off it and she doesn't handle to bad either really.

I have Gaz coilovers and atm they're set at their hardest setting... tbh it's pretty much unbearable! I can't stand it, it feels like I've been shot into the air from a trampoline everytime I drive over a cornflake I've been told I need to take the struct brace off to adjust them, is this all I have to do for the fronts? The rear on R5's is a torsion bar isn't it?

Cheers James, i have measured the same gap with mine at the setting they are now, it was 8.5cm, so in theory if i put a 6" spring i should be very close to your ride hight without spacers.

Im also running the larger engine so it should be ok

ive been running my Gaz coilovers for 4 years and have never rubbed. ive tried the stiffer spring but trust me, for road use go slammed and keep the softer spring and set the damper to soft.
