    1990 Renault 5 GT Turbo Raider - 10/2/10: away to paint :)

New poster! (less than 10 posts)

When i was young i always had a hard on for tungy grey r5 gt turbos, and when i was 19 i ended up with a red one which broke my heart, but i finally bagged myself a Renault 5 GT Turbo - Raider

Its been garaged from 2003. 4 owners over 2 families, has pretty extensive history from new, and loads of reciepts, mot`s etc! it does need some love tho, the paint has suffered from being stored and does have its share of blemishes. So the pennies are being saved and counted to do a good quality rebuild.
    spec :
    1990 R5 GT Turbo - Raider
    57K miles
nearly 100% standard bar :Koni suspension, GT Tuning Group N clutch, GT Tuning Dump Valve / Hardpipe, GT Tuning heatshied, GT Tuning Intake, Devil exhaust system

theres also a Ktec / gt tuning or Prima grille in the boot... and it`ll be going bin bound, there is a campus grille fitted atm, which is also destined for the bin. it belonged to a mate of mine and he has give up on this project for a white r5 project, so these are his pics:

shopping list: new sills, new paint, new gasket, new wheels etc etc
if anyone has any parts, let me know. but i have a few tricks up the sleeve for it and the saxo is getting less done, than what i wanted, so i can fund this

Re: 1990 R5 GT Turbo Raider - 17/10/09: More Strippage

New poster! (less than 10 posts)

i just got the car back to my mates shed

im just going to have a general tidy up, paint and powdercoat a few bits and bobs, then see from there. Maybe a few light mods, because want it at least 90% original.

Two minds wither to refurb standard rims or go for clio 16v turbines.....but it will not have any of that euro style malarky ronal turbos etc and all that guff.

Im still surprised how clean underneath it actually is. the sills let down the rest of the car tbh!

so when it was in garage, me and my mate kyle spent a few hours sorting out all the pruck and storing it away and then we got stuck in and removed the tailgate window, quarter windows, the sunroof and a few more interior trim plastics and the door cards and wing mirrors etc. under the passenger quarter window needs some attention, which the owner did address at time of purchase.

and my mates garage starting to fill up nicely with hot hatches :P

literally what you see is the only structural problems with the car....nothing else. im just sorting out the bad points, and then giving its a once over. would love to keep it as original as possible, but fancy a few choice mods and some colourage. nothing too mad....i have a 220bhp supercharged saxo vts for that lol

you'll probably need jacking points(renault) and inner sill plates(metal supplier) like i did.i used 1.25mm galvinized sheet(5 euro)and tacked it on after i joggled it.pics on profile.

ahhh well time will only time once the sills are actually off, but considering the rest of the car i doubt it will need much.

i have ordered a brand new oem grille from cgb and mike @ gt turbo spares is shortlisting me prices and parts for the OEM restoration.

i have decided to have it 100% standard as doing otherwise will make it less desirable and less valuable! so raider wheels will be sent off soon for a refurb, and hopefully the whole engine bay will be free of wires, pipes and of course engine and gearbox.....so it can get a serious going over

Hi John, looking good. It must be nice to have a large dry workshop to restore it in.

Re: 1990 R5 GT Turbo Raider Resto

not much of an update but more of a problem for me

i was not a happy bunny yesterday morning, when i went to my mates shed to work on my saxo vts and i realised that some *******s had kicked the drivers door twice, put 2 big swirl scores on the boot, a small dent and a score on passenger quarter panel and a big score message on the bonnet saying "****" ......oh and all this was done is a place that has security at the front gates!

its a good thing the car is getting restored and getting a full respray, but the principle of what happens, makes me sick

as for progress on the car its sort of stood still, as i have no job at the min and lack the funds to buy certain bits to continue the project.

but soon as i have, the car will be getting finished.

Oh Mate believe me i'd be well gutted also i'd be physically !!

That's the problem when you put so much time & effort into something & some little urchin that should have been killed at birth comes along & Vandalises it!! Times like that make me wish we did all live under Sharia Law so if he was caught we could chop a hand off as payment instead of the stern telling off that would happen now if the police were ever bothered enough to catch him!

Just make sure you keep your eyes VERY CLOSELY on it when it's finished!

my dad has a lock up with lots of old rare things - brand new magnesium minlites he bought in 1970, new twin carbs, old furniture etc...which he is going to sell on ebay and my r5 will go in there. tbh i dont know where it is. he just told me about it

Re: 1990 R5 GT Turbo Raider Resto

    tiny update....

sump, timing cover, rocker cover and engine mounts and other wee brakcets are all off to powder coating and the car is away to painting (as well as getting all the vandalised bits sorted)

other than that the engine has been stripped down and it needs new liners or the current ones honed. other than that it will get re gasketed and built back up standard. i have also came across two places that can get in touch with brand new oem parts....so all i need is a job to get cash to buy them lol

    anyways heres pics:

    bye bye

Re: 1990 R5 GT Turbo Raider Resto

If you zip the rolled-in lip off the end of your exhaust with a grinder you can pull out the crappy silencer in the tail pipe. It should have two spot welds at the other end that will break with a bit of persuasion. The car will sound and look much better. I did this to a Mongoose exhaust for my last GTT.

I also liked the part where you said "my mates garage starting to fill up nicely with hot hatches", followed by a pic of a garage with a Fiesta, Corsa and bog standard Clio in it.

Obviously I can see that the Corsa has a conversion but it was funny all the same.

Good luck with the Raider resto.

Re: 1990 R5 GT Turbo Raider Resto

lol i know it sounded bad, but corsa is gone....in place of a nova gte with a redtop turbo, the fiesta has a 1.8zvh and is 220bhp and the mk2 golf is the "ONLY" LHD golf g60 edition one (limited edition) in Ireland! and now has a 200bhp engine

also my supercharged vts saxo is in there as well as a diamond white fiesta rs1800

so really is is fulla hot hatches lol

as for exhaust im aiming for an oem one, but finding one is hard but the devil one on it is getting sold or binned!

100% standard im aiming for mate!

Ah yes, I forgot. Well, Devil exhausts are quite sought after, even if they aren't the original mild steel ones (yours being the later stainless version). So I would put it up for sale rather than binning it if you can get an OE exhaust (which really shouldn't be that difficult).

'lol' is not a full stop. You don't have to finish every sentence with one.

Devil parts are sought after, as they're the 'Renault approved' 'tuning' parts

im not sure on the pricing to be honest. my mate just takes more than 10 items up and the guy charges him £100 a time! all my mate does is sticks each item into seperate piles and then designates colours. This time it was them 3 r5 gtt items, his fiesta rs turbo rocker cover, strut brace and a few engine mount brackets and then the calipers for my supercharged saxo vts - which are done in pink

    good job imo:

same fella done my springs and anti roll bar in pink too
