    failed mot / PASSED !!!

mainly minor stuff which are 5 min fixes ,like a ghey indicator bulbs etc .

    the one that gives me extra work will be this i guess ;
    - offside front (track rod arm) track rod end ball joint has excessive play

i will go through haynes etc tonight so that i can sort this out tomorrow .
in the meantime i would appreciate if someone in the know can tell me
how to get the ball joint end of the rod ?
also is the rod a renault dealer only part ? or can i get it from local factors ,gsf ,ecp ??

    Re: failed mot

you will need a ball joint splitter to seperate the two. renault 5 balljoints are available from gsf so i would have thought yours would be too, or you can check eurocar parts website to see if they stock them. i personally would renew both ball joints.

    Re: failed mot

thats just a track rod end mate, 10 minute work

you might need a ball joint seperater to whack it out of the hub, or sometimes just a smack from the top drops it out.

but, before you undo that end, undo the big 21/22mm locknut that holds it to the rod, they can be a pain in the arse if its been on a long time. heating it up helps.

once thats loose, try and keep the nut where it is, remove the balljoint, line it up against the new one (yes, gsf, ecp, etc) and set the nut in the right place so that the length is the same else the tracking will be out ofcourse

no its not he track rod end ,even though it may sound like it
    from the description .

the mot tester told me its the actual rod in fault .
he is convinced its the ball joint at the end of that rod which has got the play

    Re: failed mot

Well if its inner its easy to check once leg is of hub carrier and go from there... do as scoff says and once leg is of the hub feel for the play (in and out movement if you dont know how) you may feel a lose knock like feeling if so replace arm from the rack... ecp seem cheapest place for arms for me and that includes outer ball joint....

Ps if your ball joint spins when trying to undo get a jack under and apply pressure to the ball joint by jacking.. impact gun helps....

thats what i am on about
i got a new rack i bought sometime ago but the mounting points
did not line up with the car so its sitting in the shed as we speak
might rob one of the rods from that if they are the same .

just need to find out how to remove the rod though
it looks like ,its screwed in to the rack with a shake proof mahooosive washer
but i cant see any nut to un-screw it ?

rob : the mot tester showed me this as he found out , wheel held at
3 and 9 o"clock positions ,there is play about 1-2mm

    Re: failed mot

The outer rod does screw out of rack so your not wrong... cant remember how the washer sits, been a while... i know some cars you punch a tag out to lock it... just give it beef and it will undo ok......

i think you can still buy them from renault as i have one in a box that was bought about a year ago ,, or just change the complete rack

    Re: failed mot

Ah, you mean the inner joint then, the print out bit you posted read asif it was the track rod end (I'd have throught the tester would have included the word 'inner' if he ment the rack itself! )

Thats more of an arse then

    Re: failed mot

just had a quick look at haynes with the new rack in front of me .
it says it unscrews by gripping the ball joint female bit with a special
renault tool ( locking pliers ) and holding the thrust washer with
another set of pliers which does not make sense as the tabs sticking out
of the thrust washer are allready sitting on flats of the main rack rod anyway

there is also a locking washer between rod and the thrust washer which
does not seem to like unscrewing action , managed to move the thing a
few mms using ****e loads of force ,this is not looking good

anyone for a free nat day ticket ??

    Re: failed mot

    arse biscuits
the rod on the car is 2.5cm longer than the one i got of
the new rack (wide track ??? )

gsf dont do it ,ecp does the 259mm one that i allready have
renault gives me 10 to 15 working days for one to arrive

i am looking for a rod with 285 mm total length as marked on the pic
the difference in length is coming from the black rod marked with blue by the way .
if i could swap that over somehow ,i would be fine
    any ideas

tim as its mentioned up there somewhere ,i have not ordered a new one
i nicked the rod in the pic from a new renault 9 rack which dont seem to fit
the renault 9 gtx due to the mounting points . but it appears now the rods are
    different lengths as well .

duncan ,the ones you got are for a renault 9 yeah ?
if the length is right would you be willing to part with one for money ,
beer ,sexual favours from tiny tim ??

    Re: failed mot

Will confirm length tonight - got hold of a few different versions when looking to do the wide track conversion - I 100% did have the correct full rack but threw it away a few months away during a clear up the 2 I have are still in the bag

Let you know tonight - Tim was not really upto the mark sexually from memory so some raw cash should cover it lol
