    Quiet exhaust?

As much as I love the cheeky growl of the Scorpion exhaust fitted to my gtt, I'm also an old fart who enjoys the peace & tranquility of driving sometimes

I've never had a 'quiet' exhaust on any of my previous gtt's, hence am a bit out of touch in this dept, so apart from re-fitting an o.e exhaust, can anyone recommend some other quiet(er) systems, preferably with a subtle sized tailpipe too; ie, <2.5"

    Re: Quiet exhaust?

I must be an age thing Mart as I'm having exactly the same thoughts I went out for a couple of hours in mine last night & the constant popping & banging on the over run & the bark from my old school scorpion did get tiresum. Bearing in mind my exhaust is now 11 years old so I doubt the packing in the rear silencer does much tbh. I've even considered puting the suspension back to standard & getting some tyres for my speedlines to soften the ride lol. That said by scooby is not much more comfortable than my 5 at present, just more refined I spose.

Getting back to the question though, I had a magnex, with the centre resonator still in situe & it was very quiet. They are a very good fit as well. My only complaint was that the tailpipe stuck out a touch to far from the bumper. Wish I'd kept it, but I left it on my ph1 when I sold it

    Re: Quiet exhaust?

    The scorpion is a quiet...ish...exhaust

I don't know of any but maybe having the silencer packed out some more could help that.

I've only had my side exit on a few weeks and thats doing my swede already

Also, I saw you leaving Silverstone on Sunday just as I arrived, car looked very clean mate

    Re: Quiet exhaust?

Magnex are supposed to be pretty quiet, seen a few going for not a lot of money recently.

Id go for o.e personally like, Theres a new back box on ebay at the mo.

I must be getting old too, the side exit on the van gets on my nerves on a run. Also attracts way too much attention off the boys in blue..ive been pulled a few times asking if my exhaust has fell off

I know what you guys mean! I sound deadened the 5 and it was a nice quiet drive with the scorp but now Ive got Marts old 2.5 rear exit on it and it's quite a bit louder! but after driving the 11 for a month with a stock exhaust on the 5 seems far too loud!

    of a mini,one on left..its a rob walker minisprint...1293..140 mph.....had a tiny micro
bore exhaust an had hardly any sound to it at all..but boy did it shift...

I think the lack of sound deadening & the void in the back causes it to echo in the van, impossible to talk after 50mph Sounds good at full pelt though

Well, I'm in 2 minds over whether or not to keep my sidey on. If I did rip it off, I'd refit one of my scorpion systems back on inc a standard downpipe.

....thats the one thing that annoys me about the sidey...because its side exit
you have the silencer right where you dont really want it...as far as creeping over

+1 Magnex (though I got rid of mine for that exact reason along with the restrictive nature of it).

That said, the restrictor and 2" bore seemed to improve low end pick up over the freer flowing items (I don't know if there's any scientific basis for this, it was just my impression).

I've also been thinking of reverting back to a quiet exhaust, the novelty for the side exit which I've had for a good 5 years goes after a while. Although the standard 0.e spec tail pipe/come pea shooter is to be frank, rather embarrassing!

    Re: Quiet exhaust?

I had the same age related issue with my exhaust, in the end I took it to one of those places that custom make exhausts and explained what I wanted, a 3inch inwardly rolled pipe that wasn't so loud that it would drain out radio 4.

Radio 4 sounds awesome with a subwoofer in place!

    Now where's my slippers

    Re: Quiet exhaust?

    Appreciate the replies/feedback chaps. Cheers

I did think of fitting an o.e system - The one I originally had my hands on looked ok ish, but it got me thinking how long it would last given it's mild steel, was donkeys years old, and that it'll have plenty of wear & tear as I use my gtt every day, hence might not last that long once fitted anyway.

Not sure how much o.e exhausts are, but I'm led to believe that Walker (3rd party manufacturer of o.e exhausts) had stopped making the gtt system, and to my knowledge I don't know of anyone else making them, apart from going to Renault direct. £££

General consensus, it would seem, points towards Magnex, but they recently got taken over by Collins Performance aka Mongoose, and I don't recall the Mongoose system being that quiet when I had one fitted on a previous gtt years back.

Didn't the Magnex system also come with a 3" tailpipe? That kinda looks out of place on an otherwise o.e looking car, hence the original comment of preferring a <2.5" outlet.

maybe you would be better off finding a company mart that can build
a custom exhaust, then could make it to suit you needs?
also be stainless..then again if a system is stainless cant that add to noise?

Aii mate, but as we know, anything custom usually = ££ and I'm not that desperate to make the exhaust quiet

If there's an 'off the shelf' system that fits the bill already though, chances are I'll (hopefully) sniff out one from Ebay, or on here.

Alternatively, if I can find a cheapy Magnex, I'll overlook the large tailpipe in favour of it being on par, dB wise, with an o.e system.

Dale, if you can find me a new Walker system, be it on Ebay or anywhere else, I'm all ears mate.

Loggster, I haven't mate, but then that's adding unnecessary weight to the car. The carpets & rear seats are in situ, and I don't really want to be adding anything else to the interior to help dampen down the noise further. The 'issue' is more so with the exhaust itself, not how much sound-deadening material there is between it & me.

just to add, if anyones interested, i have a magnex system sitting here that i want rid of.
its the std 2" system with a 3"rolled tailpipe.
its just missing the small section that mates to the turbo downpipe.

not asking much, £20 will do me.

Mart, Magnex, despite being quieter than most other aftermarket exhausts, is defintely noticably louder than OE.

I thought they did them with a 2.5" tail. Could be wrong.

Walker must have just ran out, but their complete system when I rang them up about 6 weeks ago was about £160 cost price to me which is just crazy money.

Looks like it's defo pointing towards Magnex then, except they no longer exist as such, and not sure if Mongoose kept the gtt exhaust range going? I guess the odd 2nd hand one will crop up every now & then though...maybe

Trev, is it noticeably louder than o.e even with the centre box in situ?

Not so much worried about the additional centre box harming performance as I'm only running o.e power anyway.

Leigh, did you get chance to have a look at the availability of the Timax units? Appreciate you putting yourself out like that

Um. It's a fair few years ago now mate, sorry. Better to rely on more contemporary advice I reckon.

My memory says there wasn't a Magnex centre box on my car but it did have that restrictor in the 'back end of the otherwise straight-through middle section' that's been discussed a few times on RTOC.

As regards performance, I actually think it makes the car more driveable low down over a freer-flowing exhausts, so a bonus rather than a detriment

Mart, try contacting these guys below. I bought an O.E spec exhaust (down pipe back with center silencer) from them a few months ago and it was £70, stainless. Had it fitted last week and it went on perfectly. Its an exact copy of the OE one with the pea shooter tail pipe angled slightly downward. Yes it looks a bit strange, but its very quiet and nicely retro

As they say, they specialise in the hard to find systems.

RSnut, Devil stopped producing gtt exhausts a good while back. If any are still out there, they're either old stock or copies. Either way, they're not exactly ten a penny to find either

Tony, cheers for the link; I'll be sure to give them a shout. What dia' is the tailpipe on that system? Any pictures per chance?

What diameter is the tailpipe you have now Mart?

I have a GT Tuning Cybersports system with a 2.5" tailpipe (I cut off the original 4" when it was new). The exhaust is really quite quiet and I put this down to the tailpipe size (although it could get louder when the exhaust is finally ran in, the car's only done 50miles so far).

Tony, cheers for the link; I'll be sure to give them a shout. What dia' is the tailpipe on that system? Any pictures per chance?
sadly no pictures at the mo. not sure when i'll next get the car out either im afraid. i dont keep it locally to me. the dia' is rather small. my guess would be 1.5" to 2" max. Cue someone with a pic of an OE back box please!!

    Re: Quiet exhaust?

David, it's a Scorpion 3.5" tailpipe in situ at the mo. I did think of getting it chopped off & having a 2.5" 'pipe welded on, but being the new boy up this neck of the woods, I don't know of anyone/company local who could carry out the mod', and unfortunately I'm not that good with a welder.

If that were the case though, I'd be laughing, as the system itself is fine, is in good condition, doesn't knock anywhere (which is somewhat of a rarity with Scorpion systems! ), and I do agree that a smaller dia' tailpipe would reduce the noise considerably.

If it were still noisy though, there's always the option of then fitting a universal silencer box inline.

Tony, not to worry mate. Thanks anyway
